Title: Dresdenized Druid
Post by: ironchicken on July 18, 2010, 02:35:38 PM
Hi

We may be playing this in the near future, I think I have convinced a friend to run.

Most likely set in London.

Anyway, I was thinking of playing a wizard with a spin towards druidic magic style. Dresdenfying the druid as the style of 'belief' to drive the magic rather than Harry's more classic fire thrower.

First brainstormed thoughts are:

Gypsy (Romany background)
Mother was a minor talent and father was never known (American serviceman end of WW2?).
Grew up in gypsy camps but moved away (reason?)
Earth, air and spirit for evocation
Spin towards nature magic and gypsy traditions (luck, evil eye, forces of nature, etc)
Wiccan and Celtic symbolism (lots of different woods and stones)
Trouble with faeries

What other things should I think about? Focus item ideas? Limitations?

Sounds like fun :) My friends and I have recently begun a campaign in London and it's going well. We had a lot of ideas come up for city creation because London is so big you can fit almost anything in but here's some of the thoughts that came up.

Sewers and the Underground - there are miles and miles of tunnels under London, including secret underground train stations and 150 year old sewage systems - much of which connects to the Thames too. There's more than enough space to fit Black Court Vampires, tribes of Ghouls, were-rat gangs and secret societies.

Gog and Magog - Apparently London has it's own giant guardians http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gog_and_Magog#Gog_and_Magog_in_Britain

Sex - London could be heaven for the White Court. There are innumerable sex clubs catering to every conceivable kind of fetish.

Arthurian Legend - Arthur, the original Merlin, the Sword in the Stone and the Lady of the Lake; there is a wealth of material in this legend for NPCs, plot ideas and so forth. One of our characters is an emissary of the Lady of the Lake :).

Hope that helps!

On your character, I'd advise swapping spirit for water. Water is the element that fits both biomancy (cures and transformations) and entropmancy (curses and chaos). You can use entropomancy to create all kinds of luck magic, both positive and negative  (speaking of which, aspects like 'strange luck' or 'warped luck' can be great to invoke and can also be fate-point machines!).

If you're going to be a full-on wizard then focus as much as you can in the three key skills; Conviction, Discipline and Lore. It might seem obvious but they are all vital and necessary, also specialise in one element for evocation and create a great focus item.

If you don't want to go full magic, still get Great or Superb Lore and then increase your item slots. Have lots of trinkets and potions seems appropriate for gypsy magic and it can be a very effective and fun character.

If you want to be more druidy, there are lots of scavengers in London :)

You may like: http://www.systemed.net/carto/underground.html (http://www.systemed.net/carto/underground.html).

I have made great use of it in other London campaigns.

Yes I thought about water first but I must admit I do not feel right about the whole water=entropy thing. And in Dresden Universe if you don't believe the magic is just not going to work for you. So I was going to use spirit for similar effects and as it says in YW with spirit you should decide if its power or subtlety and I was going subtle.

Very cool thank you, I hadn't seen that map before! I've posted it on our forums for the GM to see, thanks again :)

you might want to consider some sort of Sponsored nature magic instaed of straight thaum or evoc, that is waht a player in out group did for druidic magic.

There was a Dragon emissary (Scottish Water Dragon to be specific)  discussion recently. You might want to check that one for alternate rakes on druidic like powers.

Hi guys,

Do you folks have any notes online re:the Dresdenized London that you're using in your play? I'd love to see them if they're available to eyeball.

Thanks in advance.
