Title: The Preorder
Post by: iago on April 01, 2010, 10:06:58 PM
... is likely to start early next week.

Keep an eye on the Evil Hat webstore: http://www.evilhat.com/store/

(I'm posting this on April 1st, yes, but this is not a joke.)

EDIT: More specifically, keep an eye here:

http://www.evilhat.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=65_72

The products are currently listed as "out of stock" until I activate them some time on Monday. Stay tuned!

We won't be providing fully complete PDFs -- we're giving Jim some more time to get his story done up. But we'll be giving you "close to done" PDFs immediately upon preordering. :)

I keep hitting the refresh key while on http://www.evilhat.com/store/ with my Dr Who AiTaS boxed set but I can't seem to travel forward enough in time to get to the order page.  This will be a long Easter weekend.  I hope you know you're going to make it hard to pay attention helping out at church...  ::)

Excellent! This is greatly appreciated. Other than the final short story, how much different will the preorder pdfs be from the final? Also, when do you anticipate releasing the final pdf?

Congratulations and I will have my preorder in as soon as it goes live  ;D

Minor corrections at most.

Also, when do you anticipate releasing the final pdf?

By or before the books ship. More specific than that? Ha!

Will the preorder include anything extra in the way of physical product?  For instance, will I have the opportunity to order the book in a special binding or signed by the creators, or something along those lines?

It's hard enough getting the books out in the first place. We're hoping folks will be happy with, say, getting access to the content several months before the books ship. :)

I will not refrain from gushing. You are awesome, and I am as happy as a kid at Christmas. I've been looking forward to this game for years now, and it shows all the signs of being well worth the wait. This is great, and you deserve all the thanks in the world.

So, are we talking like 12:01 AM Monday, noon, what? Because I really need this before heading in to work and if I'm sitting there reading it during the game after work my ST will kill me.

It'll depend partly on when I can get my ass in place to flip the switch. Let's say mid-morning Monday, though that could run a couple hours in either direction depending on when I'm at the keys.

Is there any possibility of a 'PDF only' preorder? In general the members of my play group will be (pre- for some of them)ordering your (clearly sexily wonderful) books with an eye to, you know, the books themselves, but I personally have a much easier time working with digital information. In my case the physical books would be only sitting on a shelf utterly neglected, and that seems a sad state of affairs for tomes that could easily find home with another fan.

You might also consider this another vote for a 'printer friendly' version of the document someday (although it'd still be on my screen; paper is just harder for me to read comfortably than LCDs).

Not right away, no. To open up the hood and talk about the business particulars, we need some time during which the PDF is an exclusive benefit of preordering the books so we can both boost revenue to pay for the print run and reduce our inventory levels (which helps when next year's tax time rolls around).  The stand-alone PDF will likely go on sale closer to when the books ship.

We'll consider it for sure, but that particular line of thought hasn't reached a point of conclusion yet.

We'll run it for at least a month, if not all the way through to shipment.

Do you have some flexible server capacity?  Have you discussed load issues with you provider?  I could easily see the site going poof in about 0.00001 seconds after you flip the switch...  ;)

We migrated to a high-CPU usage server recently, and I don't think the bandwidth usage will be what kills us here. So, fingers crossed. :)

If we sell out of 3000 copies of the game on the first day... I'll get more printed.

Well prepare to be happy, sir. I think ludomaniac is right.

I cannot tell you how long I've been waiting for this? My favorite roleplaying system combined with my favorite book series? Frankly, I'm ecstatic.  I'm in negotiations, right now, to sell a kidney on the black market to jump on the pre-order. Granted I can't base the projected number of pre-orders on my own excitement, but I've talked to several folks around here who seem excited as well. Plus, Both the Dresden Files and Evil Hat have loyal followings, and some of those people, like myself, fall into both camps.  I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the number of pre-orders.

If you sell out on the first day, I can expect one or two actions from JB,

1) JB goes, "Damn...."

2) JB makes a reference to the RPG in a future book. Something like, "Last year the Alphas were working on this Role-Playing Game of theirs. I heard it was quite popular..."
Title: Re: The Preorder

I think people may be being overly optimistic. Selling out on the first day seems unlikely (even if I am going to be buying my copy then). The first week, now? That's a bit more plausible. Sold out before the official release date? That actually sounds extremely likely. Just my two cents.

Post by: iago on April 02, 2010, 07:09:47 PM
I love the optimism! I can't buy into it until I see the numbers actually adding up... but I'm glad to hear folks are excited enough to think it's possible.

Now, if you want to help *make* it possible -- and I'd love it if you did -- make sure you get the word-of-mouth out there: tweet, blog, talk, play. Small companies like ours make it or break it on the strength of word-of-mouth buzz, and that means if you're reading this message, you are part of our ability to succeed.

Oh, I've already gotten two people hooked on the novels and talked one of them into buying the game.  Also, I will be ordering three sets of the game on Monday for birthday-gift purposes.

I was sad because I got a speeding ticket and that was the money I was saving for the preorders...  :'(

BUT THEN! I got my tax refund. Now I have plenty of money. HORRAY!

Seriously though, you guys rock and I am literally staring at the DFRPG website trying to accelerate time through force of will...no luck yet...

Well, I'm not sure about selling out on Day One, but I'm going to be scraping the funds together for this in the next month or so.

Been looking forward to this for a while, and I want to play it.

Just set up my account with EH and will be logging on Monday morning to place my pre-orders.

With the hurdle of the core books now "in the final stretch" any teasers for what might be coming down the line next?

Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the quick response (apologies for also pinging you on this over on RPG.net).  By "coming down the line", was asking about future products in support of the core release.

Oh, *that*. It's our intent for these two books to be 99-100% of what anyone would need to run DF in perpetuity.  If we've done our job right, each book or story that comes out from Jim is, itself, a supplement, in that it should be pretty easy to cook up new materials based on that. We'll also be hosting some online discussions on www.dresdenfilesrpg.com or here that are focused on "how-would-you-stat" bits from the novels and stories that the game *hasn't* covered.  If those sorts of things turn into potential supplement material, we may move forward with that, but right now we're only contracted/licensed for the two books.

Just registered myself. Is there a street address I can send a dozen white frosted dounuts to Monday morning?   :D

While I love the optimism myself, I think it would be less than a one week sellout.
However, a hundred or so preorders on Monday with maybe two or three hundred in the first week is not only plausable, but I'm sure a welcome target number by Fred and crew.

Does this mean that Dresden Files RPG can lose the "Duke Nuke 'Em Forever" aspect?  How does that effect its ability to generate Fate Points?
Title: Re: The Preorder

Well it gained, "dream to reality" which is like the US mint in terms of printing Fate Points.

No way.  Fate Points only come when Aspects affect you in a negative way.  So for "Dream to Reality" to generate a fate point, it would have to be a nightmare.

Downloaded the initial files, and will be going through them shortly - assuming I can get stuff done as soon as I can.

Just to let you know, Fred, I posted a notice for the game on Steve Jackson Games' Forums, since others there have expressed an interest when I've posted before. :)
