Does it help that it's Labor Day weekend?
Looks like Atlanta is about as close to Florida as he's going to get, this year. :-\
I still haven't received the "Changes" tour itinerary. Hold your horses. You never know! :D
So there might still be more appearances? Something in Raleigh (or anything in the Triangle) would be awesome.
I wrote that January 25th. I received and posted the full 2010 schedule on February 1st. Sorry, but the list is complete.
I am thinking we need to have a contest. Something with the prize being a Jim signing in the winners town.... open only to places that haven't had a signing or aren't scheduled for one.
The Northeasters can have it out with the Floridians and CA types... the Europeans are on their own ::)
Something he can judge at the Con..... hmmmmm *ponders*
It's too bad no one ever dresses up at Dragon*Con, or else Jim could judge a costume contest.

Thanks to Facebook, I've been able to get back together with some of the members of my old writers group. We're all OLD old writers, now, but a few people expressed an interest in Dragon Con, so we may see if we can put together a group road trip and split expenses. How wonderful! I hope you all have a blast!
I'm planning on running a couple of games of the new Dresden Files RPG and I may be on a game design panel and it could be discussed. I'm a playtester only but I don' think any Evil Hat guys will be getting there. If your going to be there and you have an interest in any of this let me know.

Bought my Dragon Con ticket today. They've opened up some additional hotels for the overflow this week, so we'll hopefully have confirmed reservations tomorrow. :)Got tickets and a Room at the Westin through Hotwire. Really looking forward to the con.
*Got reservations at the Westin Peachtree Plaza, about 4 blocks from Dragon Con.*
*puts heads together with Bookie and starts plotting the takeover of DragonCon*
Oh, man. Make sure no one warns the Westin Peachtree we're coming. If y'all see a good-looking guy wandering around the Westin with a Dragon Con badge that says "Yeratel" on it, that's me. :)
(That's where we're staying, too.)
:D ;D

This just seals the deal. I will be at Dragon*Con for sure. Whether it be with my Doctor Who friends or my LARP group I don't know yet but I WILL be there!

I've been to Dragon Con 1 or all days for 8 or 9 of the last 10 years. FYI to anyone new. It's grown each year. Last year it topped out at about 75k people. It is one of the few cons I've ever seen that is a true 24 hour con. There is stuff going on at all times. Every night there are parties. I personally drink more at D*C than should be humanly possible or safe. For those who like costuming and might be looking for a group, I recommend http://www.cosplay.com/forumdisplay.php?f=85 (http://www.cosplay.com/forumdisplay.php?f=85). I was personally on the edge about D*C this year. Last year I spent way more than I should have. I drank more than I could handle. And I really didn't do much of anything Dragon Con related. But hearing that Jim will be there is going to get me there.
And to the girl that said she plans on going as Lara. If you have the body for it, please make sure to find me! ;)
Wow....DragonCon is looking insanely huge. :o I've never been before.
Be prepared to be overwhelmed. And be prepared to stand in lines. ;)
You would still have to deal with the lines ;)

That sounds....completely crazy. Um, which hotels were sold? Heh...really thinking we should transfer our memberships and go to the beach, instead. :'(The Baymont and the Wyndham. They are now property of the great state of Georgia.

Hrrrm. And now I can't even remember which hotel we had reservations at. Definitely a good sign. ::)You'll probably be surrounded by Jedi Knights and Storm Troopers, so you should be safe enough. :)
Ah, found it on my email. The Renaissance Atlanta Downtown Hotel. So I guess we're OK. It looks like it would be walking distance from the various conference hotels, < 1 mile. But is downtown Atlanta safe to walk around at night? (Assuming I am accompanied by a big strong guy, and would not walk alone, that is.)

Any takes on how long the lines will be for Jim's things...? From the DragonCon site, it sounded like the actors' panels will be the worst. From that, I'm optimistically hoping the lines won't be so bad for author's panels? I'm really thinking of hitting just JB's panels, and Brandon Sanderson's. Ok.....maybe James Marsters' too, cause...yum. ;D And then hang out in the hotel pool and tour Atlanta. I think I could survive crowds for that long.Jim's panels will probably have some of the smaller lines, but I'm sure he will also be in a smaller room. As I posted earlier, I hope he gets a larger room this year. Marsters' panels will be fairly big, but he usually gets one of the larger rooms and it's not a real problem like it was a few years back. I would suggest the Buffy Horror Picture Show and Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog, but you do have to line up early for those. Last year they had two showings of each one. Since Whedon track is rumored to be at the Westin this year, I have no idea what the rooms will be like. You might also consider the Dragon*Con at the Georgia Aquarium on Saturday night for an additional $17. My current screen saver is a great shot of Sleeping Beauty and two of her fairy godmothers in front of one of the fish tanks. Just check the schedule to make sure there isn't anything else going on you would rather do.
The friend I was going with to Dragon*Con has had some unexpected family expenses that ate up the travel budget, and will not be able to attend. She has already paid for her membership credentials, and while these are non-refundable, they are transferrable, per Dragon*Con policy:
Refund/Transfer Policy
We do not offer refunds for memberships. If you can't attend Dragon*Con after you've pre-registered you may transfer your membership to another person. This notice of transfer must be in writing and have the signatures of both the original member and the new member.
There will be a $20 transfer fee.
If anybody is interested, she's offering her membership for $20, plus the $20 transfer fee to Dragon*Con, a total of $40. Original cost through Dragon*Con was $80, the current cost is $90, and after July 19 it will be $100.
Note that this is just for attendance to the Con, it doesn't include hotel or meals. If anyone is interested, PM me to work out the transfer.
I am definitely interested in your friends ticket contact me Diana misterblueyes6665@gmail.com
A word about registration. It will be the longest line, bar none, at this convention. If you have the ability to pick up your badge Thursday evening, I strongly suggest that you do. Get in line as early as you can. Anyone thinking they can go to registration at 10:00 am Friday and get in in less than 2 hours is dreaming.
Sadly I cannot attend because I'm going to a wedding that week: mine.
SAS, would you be interested in interest from a complete RPG noob who has never played any sort of RPG before? ;)
*edited to fix subject/verb agreement. :D
Glad to. I'm not able to set up games on the books (since I have a possible work conflict). If everything works out I'll have lots of time and no scheduled games. See you there. If you'd like to coordinate, my email is saintandsinner.jmj@gmail.com.

I would make a deal with the the Queen of air and darkness herself to be there.
Centennial I is a decent sized room and it's centrally located at the Hyatt. It's possible Jim may be a panelist in one of the other panels listed. The full schedule will give more info. Last year I saw Adam Savage in his own panel, which was packed, and on a skeptics panel, which wasn't even half full. Both were quite enjoyable. I love finding those hidden gems.
Here is the link to the DF track schedule, you'll notice JB's scheduled interview is for Sunday morning:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=ts0u7PiHoZ2xC0II0DYvYYA#gid=0
We only went last year for the first time... Does anyone know if this is one of those events where you'd best start lining up at 8:00am? Or will there be plenty of room? (How big is the room?)
My advice would be to go to the Hyatt ballroom level around 9am and see if there are folks lined up, if not... start the line yourself ;D. Chances are that I'll be there, coffee in hand.
Danny
Please tell me Saturday at 1pm isn't his only signing. They couldn't have picked a worse time for me if they tried.
We'll have to see if he's going to be in the exhibitor's hall signing at a booth, maybe for the comics? That would be the other option for signings at Dcon.
Danny
What would you recommend a newbie go see? So many things on the schedule...no idea where to go when! :)
I take it I should hilite the Bards on my schedule...what else?

DonC and I do not share the same feelings on the Dawn contest, though I do have to stand on line for at least 2 hours to get in to that one and get a decent seat. I've done it most years and enjoy the show and variance in the various contestants costumes, everything from professional dancers to ladies who put way too much into their armor. That said, I may skip it this year though since there is a conflict.
Masquerade is awesome, but we usually watch it on video at the Marriot Marquis instead of Centennial I-II-III because it's just so damn crowded and if you manage to get into Centennial, you'll probably be in the back of the room watching on the big screen anyway.
I'd sort of hard for me to say what I'm interested in - I like a lot of things, but I'm not sure if I like them enough to see events on them. I like Star Wars, Star Trek, Eureka, BSG, Buffy, Angel, and a lot of sci-fi/fantasy authors. I'm not into "hard" science... I'm fairly interested in the writing track. I haven't written anything for 10 years or so, but am curious, I guess, and thinking about trying to write again - would like to learn more about it, at least.
I guess I'm mostly interested in humorous panels or events, regardless of topic, with a slant towards writing/author panels.
Will they have a public tv at the Marriot or elsewhere that anyone can watch on? I'm in an overflow hotel so no DragonCon tv. :(

That is one HELL of a costume ;)
What not to do at Con.
Give blood, pass out in the bathroom. Wander out and lie down on a bench. Be helped by a woman dressed as the Goddess Athena and a bunch of EMT's (who were all super by the way) right in the middle of one of the main walkways between hotels. Then, get your first ambulance ride ever to the hospital.
I did set the record to be the first person to leave the con via ambulance for 2010. Whoopie ding dong.
UPDATE: Jim will also be signing at the Buzzy Multimedia booth Saturday at 3pm.
I TOTALLY SAW YOU! :-)
and i totally looked at a thread from 2006 and thought Jim was going to be Sunday at 5:30. missing the 1pm signing :-( all good though. will be there Sunday AM!
From Fred, at 2:17pm on Sunday:
"Outside the Hyatt setting up for some impromptu Jim signing. Under the trees, up the ramp."
If you missed him before, now's your chance!
Is there any chance that Jim is going to be around on Monday?
Im curious, anyone who was there and can remember the questions and answer for us not visiting the Con due to living in other countries for example.
SUNDAY
Interview With Jim Butcher
Description: An hour with the author of "The Dresden Files" and "The Codex Alera" series.
Time: Sun 10:00 am Location: Regency VI - VII - Hyatt (Length: 1 Hour)
Im curious, anyone who was there and can remember the questions and answer for us not visiting the Con due to living in other countries for example.
EDIT To Add: And did noone take pictures? ;p

UPDATE: Jim will also be signing at the Buzzy Multimedia booth Saturday at 3pm.I wish I'd known that ahead of time. The line to Jim's autograph session, and the NT Times Authors Panel were both insanely long. Then again, lines for lots of things were insanely long. :)

The Buzzy signing was canceled. If I had to wager, I'd guess they underestimated the number of fans Jim would bring. I got in line for the 1pm signing at 11:30am and was still like 100 people back, but I did get in and meet Jim. From what someone said, the line for his signing actually went all the way outside the building.

That was you? I was right next to the line in the panel. I would love to read the story of Nicodemus Jim described.
But I'm really happy cuz I got my book signed and got to ask questions about Nicodemus.

Thanks to everyone I met both in the insane signing line and other places. Was truly awesome to see the murph/harry combo (though I cannot remember your names) outside the hotel on the way back from lunch.
A BIG thanks to Fred for being such an awesome guy and just chattin' at the signing and on the way to the various panels etc. Look forward to future opportunities to see you guys in the future.
Next goal: actually get a chance to have a conversation w/ Mr. Popular-Butcher. All his lines were absolutely nuts, so out of respect for the other fans it was pretty rough to actually just "chill" and talk.
Most interesting moment: Beyond Binaries 101 panel. Jim as the only male on the panel, and by far the most interesting participant, though I suppose it felt like he wasn't sure why exactly he was picked for it ;-)

any videos?

any videos?
I did, but we just got home! We'll post them tomorrow after MUCH SLEEP! :)Ah, there you guys are. I posted the pic I took of y'all with my cellphone in the Pictures thread.
It did, and around the corner. Most of the people in line for the one-hour autograph session were just there for Jim Butcher, and not the other authors there with him. I hope next time they give him a session to himself, or schedule more than one. There were a lot of folks that didn't get their books signed at this Con.
Ah, there you guys are. I posted the pic I took of y'all with my cellphone in the Pictures thread.
The 1pm Saturday line, right? That was just for Jim. Each author had a separate line and each line went to a separate table.
No video from me, but I posted info in two threads in the spoiler section.
Yeah, I asked how Niko and Tessa ended up getting married, did Niko have an alternate form other than his shadow, and later asked for the Bob impression.
it was absolutely fabulous meeting all of you that I got a chance to meet! What a great group. For those of you I didn't have nearly enough time to talk to (sorry I didn't see you again, Yeratel!) there is always next uear! Maybe I'll have made up for lost sleep by then. (Can you believe they stopped the dance at 6 am this morning? Sheesh. That's barely a party. ;) )
And whoever was Dressed as "Black Widow"... That was a great costume.
I kinda felt bad for the Supernatural CSI panel authors at first due to the room being moved due to what happened with the autograph line, but thankfully (despite having to eat the microphones) everyone was very respectful. Gratefully, I was introduced to a couple of new authors I'm wanting to try. Especially the one on the end next to Jim who had the magic based on electricity and power increasing with madness. (I believe she used to be an Editor and was in fact the woman who green-lighted Storm Front way back when too. They seemed to know each other pretty well.

I wish I had the opportunity to meet Jim at Dragon Con over the weekend, unfortunately I didn't get that chance. I had wanted to get a Dresden Novel signed along with a Codex Novel. Believe it or not I am actually a private investigator that was working Dragon Con. Jim's autograph session happen to fall into the time frame where I wasn't following one of Dragon Con's guest. But as most people know not many people actually got in to meet and get an autograph from Jim. They told us to try his panels and that he would try to cut them short for autographs. Lucky me though, my stalking skills were being used during Jim's panels. I was just really bummed because he was the only part of Dragon Con that I truly wanted to do, and it happen to fit into the work schedule and still couldn't get it. Oh well...Hopefully he will come back to Atlanta soon or somewhere close enough for me to drive to.
Always pay attention to your environment!!!
AtlantaP.I.
This was my first time at Dragon*Con, but I expect I'll come again, it was a great weekend. I'm sorry I didn't run into you again, too, but I just wanted to tell you, that leather catsuit you have looks even better in person than in the picture you posted. 8)
And theis a summer king. :)(click to show/hide)
For Priscilla- There was a disappointing lack of Molly at the con. Wheredju go?
I'm pretty sure he's wyldfae...
Yeah, I'm almost certain we've been told that's the case, too. Is it possible that he's both wyldfae and the Summer King? Or a Summer King?
I've already taken calling this year at Dragoncon, my "Jim Butcher" con, because he was the highlight for me, as far as panels and guests go. I think I wound up going to every panel he sat on, and every one of them were different flavors of awesome. Dragoncon obviously had no clue how popular he was going to be, I can tell you that.
(We did do a lot of other things, but we tried to catch at least a handful of Jim Butcher events. Succeeded in catching only three, though. :-/ Once Trotfox was dressed as Jareth the Goblin King, going ANYWHERE was next to impossible! )
I'm pretty sure he's wyldfae...
Of course I had the tickets purchased for me, and they didn't get them cheap. They were bought last wednesday for $120 a piece. I also made $325 for nine hours of work while at DC!!! Only thing that would have made it better would be if I would have met Mr. Butcher.
LOL!! Agreed!!! A friend asked me today to tell them about our time at Dragon*Con, and after I got through the first half-dozen stories, he stopped me and said, "Did you do anything at the Con which did NOT involve Jim Butcher???"
Me: *blink* Uh........ We saw Browncoats: Redemption? And... met Laurell K. Hamilton (but Jim Butcher was there too...) ? ;)
(We did do a lot of other things, but we tried to catch at least a handful of Jim Butcher events. Succeeded in catching only three, though. :-/ Once Trotfox was dressed as Jareth the Goblin King, going ANYWHERE was next to impossible! ;D )
And yes, several of his panels had to be moved to larger rooms, and the number of people sitting around READING Dresden Files books as fast as they could get their hands on them was staggering! Makes me wonder if even *HE* had any idea how popular he was going to be!
Wow, if you could follow anyone in that clusterfrak, you are the world's best PI. Only way I could stay with my hubby was to keep a hand on his man-bag.
Jim: He is wyldfae. He isn't a subject of Mab or Titania. That's what Wyldfae means. But his origins are in the Summer-side of the cycle of seasons, just like Titania's are.
Ditto Santa, only in Winter. :)
(He /is/ beholden to Mother Summer, but basically everyone in Faerie is, so.)
(I mean, that's like saying "you must obey the law of gravity." Duh.)
Me: You mean the Erlking has not learned to throw himself at the ground and miss? :D
Jim: Something like that, yes. :)
If Grandma says "Dearie, I'd really like you to do this for me," you just DO it. Or granny's roommate might pick up her shears.
Also, Hilton Reservations are open NOW for next year. Code: DCN. Rate is $188 Be aware, I called and double-checked, one night charge to reserve is NON-REFUNDABLE.
And once Trotfox was dressed up as Jareth the Goblin King...in a kilt...and Jennie Breeden starts up the leaf blower, the screams are deafening. :D
*sigh* You probably should have sent that Josh kid to come drag my butt out of bed, then. I would've enjoyed watching that while remaining completely respectful of his wife.

Was that Browncoats movie any good? I missed the screening, but I thought about buying a copy on Monday, hoping they did a last-day-sale, but they didn't.

2. He managed to not say "don't do it" when asked about NERO advise and gave a great response.
TIS-
Can you give us a synopsis of the juicy bits of the CSI panel? I missed that one.

Following someone at DC is alot easier than you would believe. With it being so crowded most people don't take in their complete environment, let alone take the time to remember any faces. Me and they person I was following were standing next to each other several times, and that is after I had been video taping him all day.
You did catch the part where he's a PI, right Shecky?
--- Magis
And that makes it less creepy?

See? Creepy? Nothing against PIs, mind you; as with any other professions, the good ones do it right and it's a skillset that can be very respected. But the spelling-out of "I was following a person in a place that's all about good fun and HE NEVER KNEW IT" just feels too "muahahahahaaaaaa!" to me. Id est, creepy.Me? I'm thinking we need to hire him. I could use a PI able to keep under the radar.
Heh, I think what makes it creepy is not so much that the P.I. was doing this, but that he says the guy he was following never noticed he was being followed. Which makes one wonder if something like that has ever happened to them, and they never realized it either. It kind of brings these elements of mysteries and detective novels a little closer to us perceiving them realistically, I guess.
Yes that was me in the Renaissance! Thank you. 8) Were you there, too? So was iago.

I was at the Westin, I got a deal though hotwire for $69 a night. We had the Browncoat and Steampunk tracks in our hotel, and everything else was only a block away, so I feel Like we got a good con experience from the hotel without having to deal with the headaches of the main 4 hotels.
The Hyatt starts October 15th right?
I've stayed at that Days Inn several times in the past, but it has gone waaaay down hill recently. The last time I stayed there, the lamination on the door was peeling up and it stank of mold and crud.
I hope Butcher comes back next year. DragonCon did say something about him possibly doing that, but ya never know. D:
Great pics, DonC! You must have been at the Superhero gathering. I'm sad I missed it...I don't remember what night it was, but there were four or five of us Black Widows posing together. That was a blast. I hope it gets tagged somewhere so I can have one. :D
I think this is the cartoon he is talking about in the video: http://headtripcomics.comicgenesis.com/d/20100414.html
The first video clip has been posted! It's just one question, but it's an interesting one: http://vimeo.com/14833260Aye, that's mine. I so very much wish I'd been able to record the entire interview...we waited about three hours in line before the event started to get in, but it was sooooo worth it. Unfortunately, I only had my iPhone on me, and so was only able to record part of the panel (due to hard drive restraints), so I opted for my friend's question. :)
Come on, internet. Cough up those videos!
Yep, Amanda draws "Head Trip." We were sitting in the back of that panel, and we whipped out our cell phones as soon as he started mentioning it: "OMG he's narrating your comic!" Amanda: ".....!!!"
You know the writer of "Head Trip"? Awesome.
Much <3 for the origin of Bob, as well as Jim's martial arts story. :)
"You no make good punch." ROTFL! Told that story to my partner at fight practice tonight!
And OMG Bob's impersonation! I will NEVER hear Bob's voice the same way again. The person asking the question said Shecky told him Jim does a good Bob impersonation and asked him to do it :D

Shecky told HER, since I asked the question. ;) Uhhhh, what does "much <3 mean," btw? I used to hear Bob with the British accent the character on the show used. I'm not sure if I will hear Jim's version of Bob now...not what I was expecting.

Does Anyone who went to DragonCon this year, have any low down on what transpired at the "NYT Bestseller's Tell All Panel"?
Apparently after the Book Cover panel, I went to lunch and then crashed in the room totally missing it.
I believe the panelist's were:
Kevin J. Anderson
Laurel K. Hamilton
Jim Butcher
Sherrilyn Kenyon
Jonathan Maberry

It was a nice panel discussion. I wish I'd taken my Flip Video recorder to get it all, but I forgot. Jim was kind of tired, but all of the writers had interesting stories to tell about getting into the writing biz. They were pretty much all in agreement that they didn't have a clue what they did to wind up on the NYT List, except they had been sticking to writing and submitting things until one day they wound up there, to their complete surprise.
Indeed. Some of them said they just got lucky and were writing urban fiction when no one wanted to read it, then suddenly it got popular and people started buying up their manuscripts.
Laurel K. Hamilton's embarrasing moments story, about men coming to book signings wanting her to autograph their penises, topped the rest of the embarrasing moments anecdotes, I think.
A little late coming into this thread, but just wanted to say that I was at D*C and Jim was beyond amazing. :) he was everything I thought he'd be and more - so funny and anecdotal, I wish I could have seen EVERY single panel he was in. And SO incredibly personable! There were a bunch of us that came to a panel he was on, Saturday night, 10:30 PM "Beyond Binaries 101" and he agreed to sign stuff after it was over, and took the time to really /talk/ to each of us. It was wonderful. *.*
Now, I videotaped him in 2 different panels. One was the aforementioned "Beyond Binaries 101" panel, and the other was his solo panel Sunday morning. If anyone is interested, I can put them up on YouTube for folks to watch and enjoy. ;D

You are all very welcome. ^_^
I'm working on the other clip, but it's much bigger (55 minutes long and 3 GB size) and I need to cut it to fit on YouTube, so it might take me a while. But I'll post it up once it's done and let you guys know. ;D

If you don't want to bother with editing, you could just re-encode to x264 or XviD or something and upload it to a filesharing site like Rapidshare or Hotfile or Mediafire. Heck, if you don't mind uploading a file that big, you could just split the clip with WinRAR and upload the current version. :) Using a filesharing site would limit the number of potential viewers a bit, but it would probably require less effort on your part.
And much, much thanks to you for sharing these video files, sir or madam. You are a fine example of a human person.
Oh true enough! I usually use HJSplit to cut a video file into pieces and then upload the pieces to my Megaupload or Mediafire account for downloading. If folks are interested in downloading and keeping their own copy, I could make that available as well. I just figured I'd also put it on YouTube for folks who just want to watch it as a streaming video.
Joy of all joys! Thanks for enduring so much frustrating formatting stuff to make this available for us.
