Title: Technical Question
Post by: LizW65 on November 07, 2006, 01:39:04 AM
I feel like a complete idiot for bringing this up, but could someone please explain how to program a word or phrase to a single keystroke in Windows XP?  You know, so one can just hit F1 instead of typing "Clarissa Ponsonby-Sutcliffe" (or whatever) 500 times?  Thanks in advance and apologies if this is the wrong forum for this type of question.

Hmmm...it can probably be done, but I've not the faintest how!

I've changed dd to the letter eth before via autocorrect, though.

Lemme get back to you on this...because I'm curious now too!

Ok, I think this will work.

In MS word, under Tools >AutoCorrect options

Choose "replace as you type"

Put something like $$$ in the replace box, and the name you want in the replace with box.

You don't want it to be something you might hit by accident, like the initials, but it should still be quicker.

You could also create a macro.  After reading JB's LiveJournal I programmed two macros, one to plug in the Scene questions and one to plug in the Sequel stuff.  Here's how to do it in Word 2000 (may be different in other versions):

1.  Click Tools > Macro > Record New Macro.
2.  Click Keyboard.
3.  Press whatever key or key combination you want use to trigger the macro.
4.  Click Assign.
5.  Click Close.
6.  Type in the text you want to appear when you trigger the macro.
7.  Click the stop button.

Voila!  You're done.  (And I just wiped out my Scene macro accidentally looking to see the steps I took.  Doh!)

Just use a combination of three letters to represent the name and then do a replace all when you are done writing the book. Make the letters something no sensible word would be made of like, dxd. Something easy to type with one hand.
