Wow! Now that's a new viewpoint. I'm going to have to ponder that--yuk!  ;D

Dom, I wonder if the trend will be away from the paranormal-- vamps, fairies and were's, and toward the supernatural--angel's, demons, ghosts. I think this may be the "new" genre that will become hot. I agree that the "spiritual" seems to be gaining some momentum.

In conversation with Charlaine, we touched upon the "fashionable genre's"  in popular fiction. One genre will ride the wave of favor for a while and then fade and another become predominant. The paranormal genre seems to be on the crest at the moment, but it is beginning to get overwritten, IMO, and readers are going to begin looking for something new.

Author Craft / Re: Number of books to equal a best seller?
« on: September 01, 2006, 03:12:48 PM »
That's really interesting and explains a lot to me. All these lists are not actually based on sales to READERS, but sales to VENDORS. They don't take into consideration the large number of  books that are pulled and returned to publishers. That also explains a lot to me about the deep discounts some books are getting on the day of release.

I had opened one of these before I realized it was not from iago. Is this simply spam or do we need to have deeper concerns about this? I am too much of a computer novice to know.

I've always thought that "fairy" was used to describe fictional characters like Tinkerbelle, and "Faerie" was used when refering to a world in which different forms of supernatural being resided.

I must confess that the idea of fanfiction puzzles me. It seems to me to show an abysmal lack of creativity to want to get some kind of adulation on what is essentially the theft of someone else's ideas and characters.

Author Craft / Re: Writer Promotion
« on: August 01, 2006, 02:13:03 PM »
The only kind of promo material which I think is really helpful is something which will lead you to other works by a certain author. For example, our fan club is producing bookmarks that have a list of the other series our author has written on the back. Many folks are not aware of these books since they were not as popular as her current bestselling series, but they are really worth a look. Many of the fans who have read her newest books are now enjoying her older ones.

P.S. I really love the Dresden buttons. :)

If you can accept the concept that there are things that are much worse than death, then you can certainly have an immortal character and still have a great deal of tension in the story. Especially if the character is immortal, but not invincible. Horrors!

One of the boards on which I have posted for years has a word filter that eliminates sexually charged words and replaces them with "bunnyslipper". I have always found this hilarious--especially the context in which you often find it.
I love the words "mystical" and "serendipitous".

Author Craft / Re: Fanfiction - Good or Evil?

I am not a published author, but it seems to me that if you are writing fan fiction, your concentration is on someone elses creativity, not your own. It seems to me it would be better to spend your time improving your craft by developing something creative that is your own, not a shadow of something that belongs to someone else.

We had planned to discuss the assigned chapters for one hour--we ended up going over three! We finally had to end it because the east coast folks were falling out--it was after midnight.  :) Several of us were first time chatters, and we had a great time. It was a free for all! The conversation moved so quickly, you had to be a speed reader to keep up, but it was really fun. I'm hooked!
