DFRPG / Re: Your take on a Autumn and Spring Court ?
« on: May 19, 2011, 12:45:42 PM »
I like Erlking for Autumn King... but I'm not really sure about this...

I think all 12 months are divided and reflect the 6 Queens.

The Faerie Ladies are young and ambitious. They is Late Spring that brings warmth into the world, and Late Autumn in which the last leaves fall and the first frosts are seen.

The Faerie Queens are mature and dominant. They are Midsummer and Midwinter which reflect the height of their seasons.

The Faerie Mothers are old and wise. They are Early Autumn and Early Spring, which still reflect the warmth and chill of their full seasons, but are wise enough to yield and preserve balance.

This definitely fits to describe the Queens in their personalities and behaviors, but it does seem to contradict the passing of power at Midsummer and Midwinter. I could probably come up with something to reconcile this, but that's messy.

Of course, the passing of power being from Summer to Winter and Winter to Summer also contradicts the idea of Autumn and Spring Courts. Maybe in the past it was different, or maybe Autumn and Spring are more distant from the Mortal World. The Erlking is definitely more disinterested than the Queens after all. A second Table could reconcile this, but that's also messy.

In a nutshell, Autumn and Spring Courts would be cool, and you guys have come up with awesome ideas, but they don't quite fit into the Dresdenverse without making things messy.

DFRPG / Re: True Believer in Evil

I think for the most part Richard has this pinned.

A few things I might add though...

First, the concepts of Good and Evil are messy at best. A True Believer in Evil has the connotations of "A True Believer in Wrong." A True Believer in Wrong is a self contradiction if I've ever heard one. If you Truly Believe, then you don't think you're wrong. And if you don't think you're wrong, then would you call yourself evil?

Second, there is the possibility of a True Believer in "Evil". Please note the bold quotation marks. Harry Dresden might fall into this category. Magic is considered Evil by many people after all. If you define the word "evil" only by public opinion, then you can think something is right and even good, despite being evil.

Third, we reach again the problem with serving "Evil." I don't profess to really understand what the word means, but I think i get how people use it. If I'm wrong then this point means nothing. Evil is generally Destructive and Chaotic. If you truly believe that Evil is Right, then, in serving towards Destructive and Chaotic ends, you will find a tendency towards contradictions.

For example. A Village serving Evil partakes in one human sacrifice every day. On average, ten people are born a year. Eventually of course, there is no one left to worship Evil. The idea that this practice is Right contradicts itself, because the practice forces itself to be discontinued.

Now, I don't think worshipers of Evil will be quite that stupid, but I do think that they will notice smaller scale examples of such inherent contradictions. In order to continue worshiping Evil despite these contradictions they will go at least part way insane. Richard has already pointed out that Insanity is not Faith.

I personally think of Faith magic as a sort of sponsored magic. The Sponsor might be the White God as he's often called in the Dresdenverse, or maybe even the Holy Spirit (which I fancy to be akin to a Genius Loci or Intellectus construct). As long as you Serve His interests, He sponsors you. Doesn't much care if you Serve in His name.

DFRPG / Re: When you want Bob without the Bob

It shouldn't be too hard to create an enchanted item that serves as an 'external hard drive' for your mind. The problem would be the CPU. Intelligence is hard to come by. In the Dresdenverse, few creatures have an intelligence to match a humans. (Maybe the Sidhe, Dragons, and other Supernatural Heavyweights, but even Bob, as spirit of intellect, is lacking in some fundamental ways)

It would be impossible to create an intelligent construct, and using an existing intelligence is out of the question (or you might as well have Bob). However you could, theoretically, partition a part of your own intelligence into an external vessel. This would be like creating a ghost of yourself, or leaving a part of your soul behind. It would not be as efficient as Bob, since you're human, but it could work.

The best option I can think of though is a bit different. This returns to the original question of an internal archive. Instead of having a perfect-recall ability, imagine having something like Lash living in your head. Except, instead of a seductive devil, it's your own mental librarian. Partition a part of your own mind to a "mental library" and a connected part of your mind and soul to your "mental librarian." Or internalize an external Spirit (sort of like Demonic Co-Pilot). This would cost at least -2 refresh, and would probably have additional costs when using.

An advance on this is a Lessor Archive. Maybe a curse or enchantment passed from teacher to student. The lessor archive would store all the knowledge stored by predecessors in their own mental libraries. It would probably cost -2 refresh for each predecessor (or something like that) but it would allow the sort of "before your time" knowledge Bob gives to Harry.

As for using The Sight to store information... That's dangerous at best, unreliable at worst. Since The Sight shows you the True Nature of things, reading a reference book with The Sight means you'll remember more than just the letters and words. Its possible that viewing instructions to a ritual with The Sight will show you the inner workings of the magic behind the ritual, or reading a demon's name ... Anyway, there's also the issue of things shown by the True Nature which might could easily distract from the information you want to see (in a way not to similar to how a Somebody Else's Problem field can distract you from the spaceship in the parking lot).

It might, however, be possible to create a sort of manual that can only be understood through The Sight. That is to say, something with a true nature predicted an manipulated so that the entirety of what one sees with The Sight is what you intend for them to See. It would probably take a greater genius to figure out how to do this, but it'd make for an interesting plot device.
