DFRPG / Which creature would be doing this?
« on: April 27, 2017, 05:38:22 PM »
Good afternoon guys! I had a quick question. I had some inspiration for a one shot campaign with my players and I wanted your advice on this. I was wanting to tie in the craze from the Unicorn Frapp from Starbucks and something supernatural behind it. What creatures would have the motivations to do so. Any ideas?

DFRPG / Re: DFA form fillable character sheet

This is the right forum for this.

We have a whole bunch of regular DFRPG character sheets, but no DFA one. I'm on the lookout, though. When I find one I'll add it to the Downloads page.

I checked out the one on Roll20; it's unfortunately not downloadable, far as I can tell.

Could you link online sheets that you can use a computer to fill out please? Ive been searching for those for a while

DFRPG / Dresden Files RPG Fate Core - Stunts vs Powers and Updated Mantles?
« on: February 26, 2017, 07:34:58 PM »
Good afternoon everyone! I hope you all are having a wonderful day.

Recently, I picked up Dresden Files Accelerated and introduced it to my players. While my players enjoyed it, they said they preferred the more number crunching system that Dresden offered but like the combat aspects of Accelerated. So, I was doing some researching and, low and behold, what they want is Fate Core. It essentially is the best of both worlds from Dresden and Accelerated.

Translation for most of it seems extremely simple, but I am having a hold up on one part and that is the powers component in DFRPG vs Core and Accelerated.

In DFRPG, most powers have a refresh minimum that can easily go up in refresh cost, such as -2, -3, etc. In CORE and in Accelerated, they treat all these as just stunts and only cost 1 refresh. How would you translate it correctly? Would you still keep the refresh or would you give it to them at one? The other reason I ask is in DFA stunts are simplified a lot more versus their powers in DFRPG, such as Werecreatures Transformations are now assumed you get the powers of your creature without having to take the stunt, versus RPG where if you, say had a bird, you would still have to take wings and it cost you one refresh. How would you handle all that? I just want to make sure that, when my players level up, they get stuff fairly and dont just pick the most expensive thing, like for my ghost emissary, physical immunity for one stunt/condition versus -8 refresh.

In addition, in DFA, we have gotten some updates to mantles, specifically how things like Winter/Summer work. In it, its considered a 'core stunt' that the mantles would have access to things like Seelie/Unseelie Magic, which in the game is just automatically given (or one refresh) while in RPG its considered -4 refresh to just have that. How would you handle those minimum changes as well?

Thank you all I appreciate it and look forward to yalls answers!

'Weapon Rating' in DFrpg is just a special name for '+shifts on a success' in a particular circumstance (attacks).

In DFrpg, when you make an attack, you inflict stress equal to the number of shifts by which your attack surpassed the target's defense + your weapon rating.

In DFA, when you make an attack, you inflict stress equal to the number of shifts by which your attack surpassed the target's defense + a number of shifts you may be awarded on a successful attack from various sources - such as from one of the benefits of Scale (pg183), or from the Natural Weapon stunt available to Fae (pg158).

One is just a much more succinct way of saying largely the same thing as the other.

Oh, I meant more like how stress is handled in DFRPG vs DFA. In DFRPG, if I recall correctly, if you have 4 stress boxes and you take a five hit, you can take a minor consequence to knock it to 3 but you ONLY fill in the third dot, not 1 and 2. In DFA, you have 6 stress boxes and, like before, if you take a 4 stress hit, if you dont absorb it, you fill in the first four boxes leaving you two left. Is that correct?

There are sources of '+shifts on a successful hit', for which 'weapon rating' is just a specific case, if that's what you're referring to.

Could you elaborate? Im confused by what you mean.

You are most definitely allowed to move stunts around from mantle to mantle. We have a few examples of that in there, in fact.

The point is that it's less intimidating where crunch goes and more flexible. As a RPer I found the game system more approachable (no pun intended) and carrying enough framework of rules to provide guidance to GMs and players.

I'm very proud of the work we did on DFA. I hope you guys like it too. :)

Pamela

I think it's wonderful! Its just adjusting to some of the stuff since there are some different translations.

I do have a couple questions, since you worked on it Pamela! :D

In our current game, I have a player who runs an Emissary of Nepythys. His inspiration behind it was Danny Phantom. With that said, one of his powers is a Breathe Weapon, or firing ectoblasts from his hands. In the original ruleset, it says that it is treated as a Weapon:2 due to it being considering a thrown weapon. Since some of the powers have been lowered, would you say that it's now Weapon:1? In addition, would you say that he can upgrade it up to Superb with one refresh?

Second, how would you treat spirit form?

Third, for character sheets, obviously combat has been changed. Is combat now just a normal HP bar? Essentially, where you get hit and you take 1 damage for each shift versus how the system was before?

Here's a question that I have, for people with experience with it.
For Dresden Files, Accelerated, when looking at mantles and such, they have a list of stunts tat you can pick from each. However, in the old editions, a Changeling could literally become an animal which in this version its less about that and more about traits from them.
Are you allowed to mixup stunts for other mantles? I know originally they said Dresden can do it in his because hes still a sorcerer despite having a winter knight mantle and just focuses on that. In theory, could I adjust my players mantle to reflect her changeling status to where she can fully transform?

DFRPG / Dresden File RPG vs Dresden Files RPG Accelerated

Good morning everyone! I hope everyone is having a great day! We're almost to the weekend!

I had a question that I would love people's input on.  Today, the PDF for Dresden Files Accelerated was released. I am as thrilled as everyone is about it! My players and I are almost done with tutorials for our universe (about 6 sessions now) and we having a blast with it.

With that said, I know FATE moved more towards Accelerated a while back. For people that know, would it be wise for me to move my players towards accelerated? Should we stick with what he have? What are the pros and cons to both? Is accelerated just for diving in without details first? Any type of explanation would help.

Thank you so much!

DFRPG / Re: Ask a simple Question, get a simple Answer!

Sorry for all the questions but I had one more simple question!

In the resources, I found this:

MJOLNIR [-3]
Description: Thor's hammer. Enough said.
Musts: You must have an aspect related to your possession of this item.
Skills Affected: Weapons
Effects:
[-0] Purpose. If the wielder is not worthy, Mjolnir becomes too heavy to lift.
[-0] It Is What It Is. A weapon 3 hammer.
[-0] Unbreakable. As an Item of Power, this item cannot be broken except with a magical ritual predicated upon perverting its purpose.
[+2] One-Time Discount. It's a big hammer. Not easy to hide.
[-1] Never Far From Reach. Mjolnir can be thrown as a weapon up to 2 zones away (instead of the standard 1). Upon striking or missing, it returns to its owner's hand on the following exchange. This ability only works when the hammer is thrown. If the hammer caught, stuck, or taken from the bearer the hammer will not magically return.
[-1] True Aim. Mjolnir is a superlative weapon. So long as its bearer is worthy, it provides a +1 bonus to all Weapons rolls.
[-3] The Bigger They Come... Even the World Serpent must fear the impact of Mjolnir. When facing an opponent, the wielder may spend a fate point to ignore all of that opponent's defensive powers and mundane armour for a scene.

In my current longterm story campaign that I am planning, Im planning on a local cult to try to revive Cthulu using a combination of the Necronomicon (at least they think it is), ley lines (I-35/I-40 are the Crossroads of America in Oklahoma) and MJOLNIR as a siphon.  At some point, I am hoping one of my players picks it up. If thats the case, could they continue to upgrade MJOLNIR with new refresh powers? Such as -1 or -2 Lightning Control? Or -2 Flight? Would that be stunts?

Nice!  Those are a gold mine!

I am actually using some of those for some campaigns.  I'm using Bigfoot to incorporate our player (whose a Werebear) more into the group by dealing with a pack of them.

The Purple Church I am using in a longterm endgame campaign thatll take a few years as Im looking to make them into followers of Cthulu and wanting to resurrect him!

So, Ive got another simple question.

Im the DM for my group and Im currently working on major players in the Oklahoma region. My players gave me input and I want to surprise them as we go, but so far, Ive come up with this list:

White Court
Native Americans (Skinwalkers I know Q_Q)
Bible Belt

Are there other groups that would be fitting for Oklahoma? Im trying to come up with lots of story material and feel like those hit the big ones but, even then, I cant think of minor ones either.

Also, I have a second question.  When a player earns a new level of refresh, are they able to 'drop' a power for another if they want to as they increase from a focused practitioner to a full blown wizard, if they choose to? Essentially a refund for another?

How would you stat the Creeper from Jeepers Creepers? Im wanting to do a one off campaign with my players in between their main storyline.

Can you elaborate on what kind of "Dwarf" you are looking for?  My brain goes straight to classic DnD dwarves (craft-heavy with heavy stone and/or subterranean flavor), I know others default to Tolkien, and neither have great equivalents in the DV that I can think of (Svartalves are pretty close maybe)

I actually asked him today and he said kind of anything but like, a dwarf in a real world setting. He likes the idea of a dwarf owning a pizza shop.
