Quick question... does a catch on a Toughness/Recovery power downgrade the power or does it bypass it completely? For some reason I'm remembering two different versions of the rules and the book isn't exactly helping me come to a conclusion.

Bypass completely. You can certainly make catches that merely downgrade the powers... but such won't offer a game-mechanical rebate.
-
If the catch is satisfied, the power is bypassed completely. The Swords of the cross have the power "all creatures are equal before god", which allows the knight to downgrade his targets powers by one degree, regardless of the catch.

No, that power acts as the catch. You're thinking of the swords and magic of the Faerie knights, which bring toughness powers for the opposite courts down a step.

Sweet, ok. That makes sense now. I was remembering how the RAW Catch works and then also remembering the Fairy toughness powers and getting them confused.
Thanks for the assist!

Right, got that confused. Thanks for the clarification.

No problem.

Soul Fire downgrades toughness powers (assuming it doesn't act as a catch).

Yeah, I believe that downgrading Toughness/Recovery powers is one of the functions that can show up in Sponsored Magic. It's part of Seelie Magic, Unseelie Magic, and Soulfire, and also listed as one option in the create-your-own-sponsored-magic section. I don't think it shows up elsewhere.
