If you are planning on going to the San Diego Comic Con it would be good to get your membership now.  They have sold out their four day memberships and have one-day memberships left.  Also, if you do not live in the area, hotel options are few and far between.

Some things that Lee forgot to mention... Parking:  If you wait till the last minute to get there, you are gonna either be walking several blocks (or riding the bus if you get one of the places right by the free shuttles) or paying the little bikes to take you down.  Just an FYI, I showed up one year at 6 am, and got a spot at the parking structure right next to the convention center.  By 7:30 it was almost full.  Food:  There is a Safeway that sells fresh sandwiches and soup, as well as a variety of other deli items.  Great place to eat, but they close early.  Get there around 11 if you want to eat there.  For good Italian food, there is a Buca Di Beppo a short way from the convention center, but bring a friend if your going there.  Another good place is Dick's Last Resort (off the wall place, as the waiters and waitresses get to be a jerk to you, but the food is decent).  Water: Yes you can suffer heat stroke in San Diego.  Especially during the summer, so make sure you carry a bottle of water around.  Keep hydrated.  As for the hotels, if your not booked by January, your probably not gonna get anything close.  My suggestion, try Escondido, Temecula, El Cajon.  If your lucky you might find something out in Fashion Valley, but this is doubtful due to the rising gas prices.  If your military, 32nd street is just a trolly ride away from the Center.  You might wanna think about parking either on-base, or at the Navy Exchange, as these places tend to be monitored better than the rest of the San Diego area combined, and are pretty much safe from people messing with your vehicle.

You know what?  if I dont post this soon, I am gonna just give everybody a San Diego Comic Con survival guide, and spoil everyone's fun.  I am gonna shut up now.

Just some friendly tips from someone that has gone for the last several years.

See ya in San Dog.

Wraith's got some great ones-

Also, there are places to refill your water bottle.  So bring the kind that you can clip to your bag.

You might be waiting in line outside to get into some of the panels that you want to go to.  Bring sunscreen (or an umbrella).  Yes, not only can you get heatstroke, but you can burn before 7am.  (We're geeks.  It's not like we see the sun all that often!)

Hall H:  You'll understand what I mean when you get there, but:  You cannot leave this room and come back.  There are bathrooms inside.  You can bring food and water, though there is a snack cart that you can access.  The line is long.  And I mean, get there more than an hour before the panel you think you're going to long.  (See above note about waiting outside--- The parking structure Wraith was talking about?  The Hall H line end is probably somewhere around there.)  So if you're dead set on the Heroes panel?  Line up for Hall H that morning and don't plan on anything else for the rest of the day.

Still the event should be cool and I can visit the Dabel Brothers booth.

One of my favorite parts of Comic Con is the free books.  It makes me very happy.  Even if I already have three copies, I can share the wealth.

Brian- that sucks.  SDCC can sell out *months* before you know for sure who is going to be there, unfortunately.  Huge does not even begin to describe the con.

I guess I can't complain too much since this is such sort notice.  I just found out Wednesday that I was going to be in LA for that weekend.  So I planned a quick road trip down there.

I never had been to a major con.  Just a couple of local cons in Oklahoma City years ago.

I am planning on doing the walking ghost tour of the gaslight district of San Diego Saturday night.  Has anyone done this yet?  I really enjoyed the ghost tour of Colonial Williamsburg I did several years back.

I haven't done the tour, but the Gaslamp is downtown by the convention center, so plan for horrific traffic.

We forumites all need to have some sort of meetup at some point.  Perhaps after one of Jim's panels?

There's here, too:

Sunday, July 27
4:00-5:00 Buffy the Musical— Let's end this show with a bang! The powers that be behind Whedonopolis.com host a screening of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode "Once More With Feeling" as Comic Con 2008's big closing event! Many say this is the finest, funniest, most ingenious episode ever to come out of the Buffy-verse. But remember, the best part of the show is up to you! These eps were made for talkin'—back, that is—and singing and shouting and dancing in the aisles—with or without your dry cleaning! Audience participation: it isn't just for Rocky Horror and mob riots anymore. For more details on the screening visit www.whedonopolis.com, then show up for music, singing, and dancing crazy! Ballroom 20

After Jim's panels could be good.  We could go in search of dinner.

Meeting up after Jim's Spotlight panel is probably best.  It might be pizza from the cart at the con, but it's food.

The con was INSANE tonight.  This is my fourth or fifth year, and I've never seen that many people on Preview Night.

dinner after a panel is the best option for me - I would LOVE to hang out with you guys.  Providing I ever get there - I've been stuck in SFO for 7 hours and I still have 2 more to go before I MAYBE get on a flight.   @&)(;;(()$&&@$ crew cancellation!!!  Like Priscellie I'm gone on Sunday.

P.S.  Tomorrow I will be wearing a shirt that actually says "Daoine Sidhe" on it,  because I am a larger than life dork.  So if you see me say hi!

Dinner after Jim's spotlight panel sounds good to me.

G4 is showing the Comic Con on TV right now. Still no sign of Jim on their itinerary of guests. I hope they do an interview with him. They have already interviewed several comic book related panel guests and the actors for True Blood, the HBO TV series based on Charlaine Harris's books. Want to see Jim Butcher!!

Husband and I will both be sporting SplatterCon!!! shirts tomorrow.  We're going to try to get to the front of the HUGE room.

(Jim's spotlight panel is in the third biggest room at the con.  Maybe 2,000 people?)

I missed his floor signing today, but Tru Blood looks AWESOME.  Once life calms down, I'll have some great pictures to demonstrate the insanity that is Comic Con.

I went to one of those in Charleston and one in Savannah...Savannah was nice cause they allow 12oz beverages carried openly, and the tour passed several bars.  Duck in for a freshie, rejoin tour.  ;)

Post by: Brian on July 27, 2008, 06:29:51 AM
All the comic con visitors were running around the gaslight district as we did our tour.  But they looked at the guide like she was the most bizaree thing they saw all day.  Our guide was dressed in 1880s garb.  Compared to alot of the comic con garb she looked normal.

I felt like telling them that she was dress as a character from From Hell.

We went into the oldest house in gaslamp tonight.  It is a museum.  Until tonight I had always kept an open mind about ghosts, neither believing or disbelieving.  One member of our party took a photo of a painting.  I looked at her digital camera when she did and we both saw the face of a man that was not in the room with us in the photo next to her.

I did a ghost tour of Colonial Williamsburg.  But that was just walking around with a guy carrying a lantern.  He shared a lot of history and stories about ghosts.  Tonight was different though.

Now I just need to find a ghost tour of the Graceland cemetery in Chicago.

Haha, that would be cool.

I enjoy the ghost tours just for the history, the tour part and the walking.  They are good like that.  I try to do them anywhere I go that offers them now, whether there be ghost or not, still fun.  :)

Savannah also won cause it is cooler than Charleston.  ;)

Ever notice that the girl looks an awful lot like Priscellie?

So who else was at Comic Con?  Who/what did people see?  Spill!

How cool!  I saw the Mythbusters guys from a long distance--they were signing at the same time as Jim on Saturday, and when they arrived, the crowd went INSANE.  It was like Beatlemania!  I was chatting with this dude

I REALLY hope you got your Maeve or Molly costume and got someone to take a pic of you and the Harrytator. Send that sucker to me if so.

The detail in Matthew's costume was INCREDIBLE.  The runes in his staff and blasting rod were burned in!  He got Jim to sign the bottom of the staff, which Matthew will burn in as well. :D

I also got a close-up on his shield bracelet, but I haven't uploaded it.  I'll have to post it when I get home.

His leather duster was made by his girlfriend, of Pendragon Costumes (http://www.pendragoncostumes.com).  They're the group that made Jim's Harry-duster!

I got a picture with him in my Maeve costume, but it was on his camera.  I emailed him this morning for a copy!  In the meantime, here's a shot of me as Molly with another Harry.  I didn't get his name, unfortunately.

Ask Jim where he got the Zombie Crossing t-shirt, pretty please?

And I'm confused - Pendragon made a Harry-duster for Jim? Why doesn't Jim wear the thing whenever possible? 'Cause that's just cool an' stuff.

I was with Jim when he got the Zombie Crossing shirt earlier that day.  It was from a t-shirt retailer at the con, with three huge booths set up!  Wish I could remember the name...

And Jim probably only wears the Pendragon duster on special occasions, as Jim-in-duster would be so awesome as to burn out mortal retinas.

Should be Stylin Online (http://www.stylinonline.com/).  They're always the ones with the huge booths.

I don't know where in that massive site that particular shirt would be, however.

Ah, thanks!  Yup, that's the site.  Unfortunately, a search for "zombie" didn't produce Jim's shirt.

...Though actually, wait, no.  The zombie crossing shirt was bought at a different vendor.  They had a bunch of gaming shirts.  Google, google, google... Here it is! (http://www.offworlddesigns.com/p-92-zombie-crossing.aspx)  Off-world Designs!

It actually wasn't much crazier than it was on the previous days!  Or maybe the morning was just less crazy than the afternoon.  When we returned to the floor in the early afternoon to find Jim a copy of Watchmen, you could barely move for all the people.  Jim and Cam remained chill, however.

What's the name of the restaurant? Is it the one that's dessert-only (or close to it) with $$$ listed as the cost for *A* dessert? As much of a skinflint as I am, I see that as a challenge LOL!

Did Mr. Butcher make any public statements about Backup, Day Off, The Warrior(? The one from Mean Streets), or Turn Coat?  What about any bits about original Comic Book stories?

I did say public statements.  Please, oh please, no NDA stuff that you can only mercilessly tease us with.  I'm lookin' at you Shecky and Priscellie.

Turn Coat:

We basically got the same blurb that's been shared with the tour.
(click to show/hide)

I have to add- The room that Jim's panel was in is huge.  It easily seats 2,000 people.  It was packed to the brim, though that might have something to do with it being followed by the panel for 24 and a showing of Avatar.  Still- it was a HUGE audience to entertain.

To give you an idea of the crowds-

This is the line to get on the floor on Preview Night.  This is just the people with 4 day passes who got off work early enough to start lining up before the doors opened.  This is a SMALL, SMALL, SMALL amount of people compared to what was there later that night.

And these are shots taken of the dealer's floor from above on what was probably the least crowded day and time.  (These were taken around dinner time on Thursday.)  To give you an idea of the vastness of the convention floor itself, this really is just a small portion in the middle.

Here is a link to my flickr set of Jim on Friday, July 25th at Comic Con SD.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/newtosandiego/sets/72157606436442826/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/newtosandiego/sets/72157606436442826/)

First I have some shots of his "Spotlight On" panel.  Not too blurry, but tough to get anything really good in that room with the table and water pitchers in the way.  Oh, and terrible lighting for photos.

Then I have shots Jim signing autographs after the panel.  Beautiful lighting in the pavilion where he signed autographs.

Were you the one with the intricately burned-rune staff that Jim signed? Blasting rod, glove and shield bracelet?

Thank you so much!  Wow...I was just trying to see if I'd met anyone on here at the con...so...by DragonCon, hopefully I'll have the staff completely carved, and I'll have more of Harry's Business cards, as well as some of the pamphlets (I'm a Wizard!  Ask Me How!) and maybe another incarnation of Harry.  Any suggestions?  I already have Harry from the end of Storm Front (sweats, cowboy boots, and the "easter" tshirt), and generic post-burned hand Harry.  I'm also working out shield bracelet 2.0.  Any other ideas?

nah.  No trade secret.  Not as far as I know...ANYwho, I just took a leather strap, punched some holes just big enough for the braid of twine to fit through, and laced some buttons I got at JoAnn's in.  I sewed a separate strip of leather on the bottom to keep the twine from chaffing my wrist, and left a loop of it at the end to wrap around one of the buttons to fasten in to my wrist.  Pretty simple stuff.  The runes on the rod and staff were just various languages, symbols and fonts I found on the internet.  They include, but are not limited to:  Angelic Script, Elvin, Norse, Kryptonian, Celtic, Demonic, Navajo, and something called "mystic."  I bought a burning pen from WalMart, bought some wood and sandpaper from Home Depot, and went to carving and sanding till it looked "natural" and then burned the symbols in.  And I ain't eeeven done yet!

No, all I was originally saying was that you physically had the general structure we'd expect from Harry. Couldn't tell if you're more muscled; the duster's kind of hides that.

Elaine is the character I most resemble in daily life, so I could easily whip up a costume, but... a flannel shirt, jeans, and Birkenstocks?  That's something I could wear to work.  I like my costumes to be much more dramatic. :D

Just read a nice write-up about JB that I thought I'd share :)

Quote
...In order to ensure a seat, I jumped into the panel BEFORE 24 just in case there were rabid Jack Bauer fans out there. It turned out that Jim Butcher, author of The Dresden Files, was the guy talking to fans right before Bauer.

I’ve never read a single book in the Dresden series, nor heard much about Butcher, but he was one of the more entertaining personalities I saw at Comic-Con over the course of two days. He sat there by himself, with a meek little editor, in front of hundreds and hundreds of people likely waiting for 24, Prison Break and Avatar, and he made the entire room focus on him for the next hour.

He truly loved his fans that got up to ask questions. He gave detailed and awesome responses, the kind of thing these Comic-Con attendees go nuts over.

It was a pleasant surprise to accidentally walk into an entertaining panel. In fact, I may pick up a copy of The Dresden Files because of it...

Rorschach, that costume is wicked cool!!!  I saw several versions of Harry at the con, but yours is definitely the best of the bunch.  If I had seen you there, I definitely would have stopped and ask to take a few pictures.

Amber, I think I ran into you and your husband in line for Jim's signing on Saturday and I'm wishing I had actually introduced myself.  :-\

Jim's panels and getting some books signed by him were definitely some of the highlights of Comic Con for me.  It figures that the man himself is every bit as funny and entertaining as his writing.  He's also one of the fastest talking people I've ever met; he could seriously give a couple of my favorite fast talking fictional characters (Sam Carter and Rodney McKay from the Stargate series) a run for their money.  :)  The next time Jim is doing a book signing in Portland or Seattle I will definitely be making the drive to see him again, and hopefully meet some of the folks from the boards here.

I'm not sure who I met, but saw at least three Harrys on Friday at the panel and think it was Rohrshach who gave me the Harry business card in the Mysterious Galaxy signing line on Thursday.  If anyone saw me at Con, I was wearing either a San Diego Star Wars Society club shirt (I was working at their booth a lot) or my Chicago Cubs Murphy (Saturday = cosplay day).

A couple people took photos of JB with my husband (as Harry) at the pre-Playing God signing on Saturday.  If it was someone who reads this, I'd love to have a copy of the pic (that was the day I forgot my purse & camera).

HI! to anyone I met -- next year I'm getting names and writing them down!!

I'm new here, but I saw Jim at Comic Con. He signed a couple of my books and then I got to see his very interesting discussion with a few other others about God and Religion. One of my questions was, "Where does Harry get his moral center?", and Jim gave a very good and heartfelt answer, talking about his father. At that point I really do get the fact that Harry's father and Jim's father are both very much alike.

Also, I want to apologize for making a complete ass of myself by asking Jim who he would want playing Harry in a movie (this was after the panel was over). I think I may have interrupted someone asking him a question and I kinda felt bad about it. By the way, he jokingly said Will Smith.

Anywho, long time fan of the series. Have backup ordered, on its way (hopefully lol), and I will probably be pre-ordering Turn Coat.

Did you know that he turned down the part of Neo from the Matrix? Ha, he regrets it but at the same time is glad he didn't ruin the movie. Also, Sean Connery turned down the role of Gandalf in LOTR. That one kinda freaks me out. I can't see anyone besides Ian McKellen as Gandalf.

Seriously.  I'm thinking of bringing an elephant tranquilizer to ConDFW.

With the other GOH David Weber you will need more than one elephant tranquilizer, MWW (Mad Wizard Weber) has know to do a con with 1 hr sleep a day. One con he he was up till 6am talking to his fans and was at Breakfast at 8am. When asked he said took him about a half hour to go to sleep and a half hour to get a shower. He had a panel at 9am. I know he was still at it at 2am playing spades the next night, asked him what time did he stop the spades game said the reply was "Around 5am", this was at 8:30am as he was leaving the breakfast bar.

If JB likes to play spades, Shannon will have her hands full, getting him to sleep!
