Title: Murphy Mantle Madness
Post by: raidem on June 19, 2018, 01:14:45 PM
Do you believe Murphy will remain vanilla human.  Will she end up with a Mantle of power all her own.  What will it be.  Will she end up as some goddess, or like some sidhe queen defending humanity against the Outsider hordes.

This thread is devoted to when will it be; when will she obtain her mantle of power.

Too tough for me to call.  On one hand I get the impression Jim wants her to stay a vanilla mortal, but on the other she seem's less relevant to me going into the future when it comes to her taking part in Harry's adventures.  If she's not taking part, then her character loses relevance.  She needs screen time, and it's tough to see her having much the way the books are currently being driven (focused on action, not so much at home dialogue)

I added an option for her gaining a mantle specifically related to her joining a time travel plot.

Never. Harry has plenty of friends with supernatural powerups, the whole point of Murphy is to be human.

We used to have Butters, but well, light saber. I think that leaves Murphy the only friend without anything supernatural (even Forthill has uncanny Faith powers).

I don't remember Forthill displaying any powers?  I'm not sure the point of Murphy is to be human.  Originally she was an antagonist according to Jim, now she's Harry's love interest.  I guess she does add the vanilla mortal aspect to the story, but I'm not sure how important it is.

Never. The series needs a  Capable Human. A vanilla mortal kicking ass and dealing with monsters with regular ol'fashioned human science of death.

Murphy = Mab ?
Not exclusively. That option allows for any mantle, just in case if Murphy might get another mantle not that particular one and it is involved in a time plot.

I think it would be a huge mistake to try and give Murphy a mantle.. Then she'd no longer be Murphy.

Hey that would be great with me. :)  Kinda like giving Harry a mantle made him no longer Harry.

We would not have expected anything less with you, Raidem. LOL

I added this too.

In an alternate reality that is germane to the story.

This allows our Murphy not quite to get a mantle but a different Murphy to have one in another alternate reality. This option though needs to have some hook back into the real story somewhere.

close, and I know why that's the most direct representation thought of, but other mythos in play make the archetype broader.

Just want to mention that the listed choices don't account for a mantle *during* Storm Front.  Which is obviously when she picked up the Inspector Lestrade (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/InspectorLestrade) mantle that'd been infected with Arbitrary Skepticism (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ArbitrarySkepticism).

I always thought she was more of a Javert for Storm Front/Fool Moon.

Nah, because Javert wouldn't have worked with Harry's Jean Valjean.  Post-FM Rudolph is closer to Javert.
