DFRPG / Re: An idea to allow more spell casting
« on: June 16, 2014, 07:37:30 PM »
What if Refinement was used to mitigate the cost of low level spells?  You could have it cost Refresh and would even have to adhere to the pyramid the same way Power and Control do.  Perhaps one slot of Refinement would allow a Power 1 Offensive Fire spell to be cast without stress for example.  You could call it Spell Endurance.

Take a note from this thread though and don't force a shadow on one of the players. It's a cool thing to do if one of them wants to introduce that into the campaign, but if it is forced, it's not going to be fun for anyone.

No I hear you.  Any taking of coins will be a choice.  With implications laid out up front.

OK. That is pretty much what I was thinking but wanted clarification.  My group will be facing a Denarion Big Bad in a final showdown next session and I want to be prepared for any eventuality.  <insert evil laughter here>

I guess what I am trying to ask is would the Denarion have to break the human before they will get the shadow? Or would simply placing a coin in their hand while they are restrained be enough to...infect them?

In our Emerald City game The Pack is a werewolf biker gang and one of the more powerful supernatural groups in the region.   We never really considered making them part of any national or international group.  It was mostly just a local group that was tied together through an old Native American ritual that would bind a human's soul to a wolf spirit.

A slightly different scenario but what is to prevent a Denarion Demon from torturing a perspective host until the take up a coin?  And what would that entail?  Would they have to break the subject before the shadow would enter them or would simply putting it in their restrained hand do it?

that's why I asked the descriptions are vague, that's one of the problems with the system, games require a bit more rules to make them doable in game. So what I find in games like this is a lot of house rules to clarify things and prevent Omni characters. I almost think some modern version of D&D d20 would almost be better setting for Dresden world.

I couldn't disagree more.  I have been running/playing DFRPG for the last 3+ years and I am totally in love with it.  I can't imagine trying to use any d20 class and level game to play it.  Well, maybe M&M but that is a very different kind of d20 and I don't think it would capture the world of Dresden as well as FATE does.  But different strokes and all of that.

Well like I said they are a bit of a special case. If IoP is as unacceptable as you say then what would you suggest? Because they seem to go beyond simple Aspects from my reading of them.

Like I said I would normally agree with you.  However, in the books people have specifically targeted his right side to try to stop him from using his tattoos. Which suggest that maybe they are almost an object because they CAN be targeted. That could be worth a discount depending on how you handle it.

I would normally be against it but I can see the Tattoos being considered an Item of Power.  Atticus talks at length about how if the tats were damaged by an attack he would not be able to heal or access his magic at all until he got them redone by another druid.  And considering he is the last druid (until the last book anyway) he would likely have to get one of the Tuatha Dé Danann to do it for him.  Which would really suck for him.  In fact I recall his tattoo was damaged at one point and because of that he wasn't able to shape change into any animals because he would not be able to shape change back into a human.  I am not sure how this could be modeled however.  Perhaps the controlling Aspect for the IoP could cover this.

Congratulations Keryth.  You have created an awesome Amalgam of Dresden with Buffy, Highlander, X-files, and so many other things and somehow it works perfectly.  I can't imagine trying to juggle all those disparate 'verses.  And you do it with aplomb.

Natural Weaponry definitely would be the best option in my opinion.  It can be upgraded to add extra effect as the character gains experience which is nice.

You do realize that the sun, holy items and water, fire and a host of other things would allow the Alphas to fight the RCVs right?  It isn't as if they are invulnerable.

I had someone ask me to make up a banner for his Dresden game set during WW2.  I did it thinking I would get to play in the campaign but that never happened.  Made me very sad.  :C  Here is what I came up with:

"Luck of the Irish" is a great aspect.  It can always go both ways.
