What about, say, if you're a Warden and you've got one of the Luccio-vintage Warden Swords; would you allow its baked-in counterspell to take on an evocation?

If I recall, it was used exactly in that way by Morgan. Some scene with him cutting an energy blast/ball in half after it was thrown at him?

An assessment action usually takes quite a while, that's why you usually don't do it during a conflict, but long before, to prepare for a conflict. In the case of the counterspell, the assessment is part of the action, not actually a free action. When you do a counterspell, you always do the assessment action at the same time.

However, I would only allow it like that if the wizard in question opens his sight. That way, he has a clear look at the spell and can attempt to counter it, much like Harry did with the barbed wire spell in GP. Without the sight, the assessment action would take longer.

That was more of a thaumaturgical counterspell, IMO. The go-to example for normal counterspelling is when Harry removes the conjured snakes spell cast by Casius on Susan. He didn't have his sight up and was able to counterspell the ongoing effect without taking a lot of time to assess.

I would allow counterspelling of evocations, but at an automatically tagged penalty (such as "Hard to counter something that fast," which is then tagged for -2 on either the assessment (most likely) or the actual counterspelling (less likely), evocator's choice).

Alright, I finally got around to it :D Here is what I was able to get of the Atlanta Q&A session.

I'm not sure how to link this in the WoJ section, so if Priscellie or someone would like to copy the link elsewhere, that'd be great :)

Or, someone can just tell me where else to post this.

I was able to record most of it. But i missed the first 5 questions or so and was at a bad angle. I'll upload it anyway once I have a chance to do some video editing :) (to adjust sound, etc)

Cool :) Hope to see you there.

I plan on arriving at like.. 1-2PM and reading GS while I wait for the signing to actually occur. Bad enough that I'll have to wait 2 days to get the book; I don't want to wait a few more hours once I can get it in-hand :D

As a side, if the broken pieces, after separated for a time, turn to smoke and reform at the biggest piece... then, with a bit of thought yields this process:

1: Transform
2: Break the mirror
3: Grab the biggest piece and carry it, somehow (leather satchel on animal, etc)
4: Reforms at end of scene
5: Transform back

It kinda renders moot the point of the mirror being bulky and troublesome. Though, I suppose you could just agree to never do that... ::)

Alright, got a few answers.

  • You must buy a book at the store the day-of the signing (Thurs 28th)
  • Once you buy a book, you get a pass to get your book signed
  • They aren't handing out passes until 5pm
    • If you bought a book before 5pm, you can get a pass once they start handing them out (keep your receipt)
    • They will continue handing out passes after 5pm (no stop-time)
  • Signing begins at 7pm and continues until everything is done. No hard closing time for the store

The manager that answered everything was named Will and said he's the one in charge of the event. So, if you have other questions, ask for him :)

I'll give them a call today to ask about the timing of the event, as well as BN.com vs in-store.

Somewhat of an odd post: http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,26595.0.html

Seems kinda spammish, but I could be wrong  :)

1)  I am playing a white court vampire.  What effect does red court venom have on white court?  Does it effect them at all?
No reason it shouldn't.

2)  There is a werewolf in our party.  Does red court venom still effect him when he's in wolf form?
Same as above, IMO.

3)  How does sunlight effect red court vampires?  I say sunlight burns and kills them, as sunlight is supposed to effect vampires.  Others in my party say sunlight only burns off their flesh mask, leaving their true form exposed, as in storm front when dresden used the sun flash on bianca, burning off her flesh mask.
Burns and eventually kills. Think uber-sunburn mixed with a bit of gasoline+match. There's mention that some of the oldest red courts can walk in sunlight, "hiding in the shadow of their fleshmask." The reason bianca was only exposed was that it was only a burst of sunlight. If it was sustained, I imagine she would've quickly become a greasy smear on the carpet.

Also, since I'm playing a white court vampire, I need to know how do white court vampires react to thresholds?
Not sure on this one. We usually don't see Thomas have any trouble around them, but then, again, he's always invited to wherever we see him go. I'd do a quick ruling that it's somewhat like Wizards, since they're both quasi-mortal. They can enter, but they lose access to their powers, depending on threshold strength.

Thanks!

Welcome!

I had to cancel my Amazon order in order to get this all done right. Now I'll have to wait a whole 'nother two days to read Ghost Story :( But I guess I can survive the two extra days...

Okay, I called the store. They said you have to buy a book in-store anyway in order to get one signed.

So, if anyone else is wondering, there you have it  :)
