DF Reference Collection / Re: The identity of the Mothers [CD spoilers]
« on: November 28, 2012, 01:16:31 AM »
The Mothers are the Crones.
The Queens are the Mothers.
The Ladies are the Maidens.
Maiden, Mother and Crone is one of the oldest mythical tropes out there, and sees countless expressions in real world religion and in fiction.

(On a side note, my favorite expression of the three is with Eve in Sandman - she's all three personally.)

I think that when you look at the Queen Mothers are being the Crone, the fun part lies in thinking of who they are individually. My current wild guess is that Mother Winter was Eve (yes, THAT Eve).

Or maybe Frau Totenkinder. :p

The average income over at ILM is around 90k, so, I guess if she was really savy she could have saved around 100k over 4 or 5 years which a frugal body could live on for a fairly long time.

Firstly, it's definitely pssible to get out of university with no loans owing. Scholarships, parents that made good use of RESPs or could just pay for it,  co-op program with good work terms, etc. Secondly, five years at 90k? 150 to 200k is easily possible, even taking into account taxes. If you're willing to forego a lot of comforts, it doesn't take a whole lot to live.

I didn't pick up on the Toto agression until reading this post but definitely remember thinking that Marci was bad news from Aftermath but never figured how.  What about her possibly working for the Fomor?  Any thoughts in that direction?
I don't think so, given how she worked against them in Aftermath. There doesn't really seem to me to be an angle where it would make sense that she was a double agent there. On the other hand, it could help explain why Hendrix showed up at Billy and Georgia's place in Aftermath - Marcone's existing troubleshooter there would have had to be really lucky to see something was going on, but Marci would have known sooner if Andi called her while Georgia was calling Billy.

I suspect that she's Marcone's, as indicated above. Not necessarily bad, but getting paid to help the good guys and keep Marcone's in the loop.

Regarding what happened back in Dead Beat though, I think that if it were anyone thinking the thought other than Harry, it was just Lash telling Harry that no one was coming. My suspicion is that Lash intended to let Harry suffer a little, recognizing that he wasn't going to grab the coin quite yet, but that he would be more likely to grab it after the disemboweling got going, with no one arriving to help him. What occurred after wasn't to her plan.

I found another interesting one, way back in chapter eighteen of Small Favor. It was during the War Council with Harry, Molly, Murphy and Thomas.

Quote
"Nothing's ever convenient with you, Dresden," Murphy said.

"Exactly my point." I rubbed my jaw. I needed to shave, but my throbbing nose was bad enough without adding a couple of razor nicks to the mess. I didn't trust my hands to be steady. There were too many scary things moving around, and if I stopped long enough to think about how far in  over my head I was getting, I might just crawl into a hole and pull it in ever me.

Don't think, Harry. You know too much about what you're up against.

Analyze, decide, and act.

The italics are in the original text. After hearing/thinking those words, Harry shifts gears, regains his mojo, and starts effectively planning. If, as the OP essentially suggests, these italicized sections where Harry refers to himself by name are foreign entities influencing him, it's one sneaky long game that Jim Butcher is playing with us.

Again though: I think that this was Lash. Not yet strong enough to make herself clearly heard by Harry under most circumstances, still reforming herself, I think that she might well have sent out some bolstering advice to get Harry back on track when he needed it.

I remain of the opinion that the White God is a different type of being than the other gods of the Dresdenverse. My theory is that the other gods are either a) similar in nature to gods in Neil Gaiman stories (they exist because humanity believes in them), or b) they're massively powerful beings that people are worshiping for one reason or another (the Red Court's leaders would be examples of this). I think that the White God is technically an Outsider, and the Dresdenverse is his realm.

I think that it says something that the White God has at least four - and perhaps once five - Archangels following him who seem to be more powerful than even heavy hitters like Mab.

The gun is custom made, so of course they're going to have it made in such a way that they can handle it safely.

Display Case / Re: Things Harry Dresden Is No Longer Allowed to Do

-No matter how much they deserve it, I am not allowed to take Murphy's bosses for a scenic trip to Arctis Tor.

-I am not allowed to tell religious children that Santa exists is a Faerie. There's no right interpretation with that crowd.

-I will not sign Mavra up for Cosmopolitan magazine. No one likes to see a Blampire cry.

-I will not sing along to "Invisible Touch" when Michael is around.
a) It takes control and slowly tears you apart. And though she will mess up your life, you want her just the same.

-I will not ask a Denarian for change.

-I will not do magic shows for kids.
a) Unless of course Ivy wants to see me pull a bunny out of a hat.

-I will not go drinking with Sanya and try to use magic the next day.
a) Or to do anything else.

-I will not try to eBay my new copy of The Two Towers.
a) In general, I think it best I try to avoid eBay altogether.

-I will not tell Luccio that she looks pretty good for two hundred.
a) On a similar note, if she has trouble getting into bars, I will not laugh at her.
b) No matter how long the argument with the bouncer goes.
