DF Spoilers / Re: Is Harry downplaying Mabs protection?
« on: February 08, 2021, 08:40:17 AM »
I'd say there is probably a difference between The White Council, Accords Signatories, taking out an Emissary/Agent of Faerie, a Signatory,  and just some wizard or the like whacking Harry. The Council, as a body, has obligations and duties. A signatory attacking the emissary of another signatory  can be construed as an Act of War. Harry was on the field of battle with his Queen. The WC cannot be seen as ordering an execution for acts done on the battlefield just because they are against WC laws. Most signers will not deem Harry's action wrong.  Harry is there as Winter Knight. So they can expel him from their group, but not persecute him for those acts. Next time, may be different. But it could be a sign of disrespect to Mab to kill her people. Makes her look weak. Can't have that.

Now, say, the Genoskwa killing Harry might be seen as a personal thing between them, not involving the Forest Peoples.

DF Spoilers / Re: Lara Raith killed Malcolm Dresden

I find the timing weird for Justin to have been (whether he did it personally or had help) behind it. Harry is in the orphanage for four years between his father's death and Justin's adoption. It feels off to me that Justin would kill Malcolm and then chill out for four years until Harry develops his talent.

Maybe simply to make sure Harry DOES manifest a talent? I  don't think it was a 100% certainty. And if it was 100%... I should think the Council would be keeping CLOSE tabs on its members, especially the females with ability - like Margaret.

Some do but Lara does not and I do not get the impression that it is wide spread.

Thomas can do some magic but it is limited.

Thomas also had a pretty good level wizard for a mother.....  and I would assume most Council women would not hook up with a Whamp. The Whamps know OF magic, but use it? Maybe the Hunger dampens magical ability too - yes, Thomas may have some.. but who are his relatives? His mom was good, his brother is VERY good, and old Grandpa..... top of the heap.

There is also this if there was hope for an immortal meeting up with a lover now Einherjar in the distance future, you'd think Gard would say it, she loved Hendricks.  All she said was, it wasn't going to happen.

I don't think the memories of the likes of Gard would count in the limitations, only humans. But Hendricks has most likely two big blockers - Harry, and Denarian Host Marcone. They could be alive a long time. Though maybe Marcone would not count  as quite human any more - presumably he lost his soul accepting the coin. The Knight mantle did not require renouncing his. Now, does the Lady count? Molly did not volunteer to become Lady, she was possessed....

I think Murphy will still be Murphy. Also, Gard said she can't be back but nobody said that Harry can't visit. I suspect he will find a way to at least communicate with her.

If he could communicate with Malcolm, why not Murphy?

Or maybe it's only the Allfather (and puny humans-and-other-lesser-supernaturals) limited that way, and greater powers (e.g. Uriel acting through Harry and the tools of TWC's rebirth) could do it. And breaching the shroud of death will be a key part of gathering the mooks for the Apocalypse.

I think TWG makes the Rules, and can change them as He sees fit. Uriel.... his bailiwick is more Free Will. How was her will infringed on? He may have the power, but it is out of his sphere....

Lara wants a closer alliance, maybe more power, but even she doesn't seem thrilled with Mab's proposal.

Maybe it is this.....

What happened to Harry's first gf? He thought for years he killed her, burning down the house....

What happened to the woman he proposed to? He DID kill her. (a necessary sacrifice, but still....)

His last girlfriend? He took her to Armageddon Spring Training, she died next to him....

...maybe that is why she doesn't want him.... self-preservation...

(Did Jim use to watch Bonanza? Harry's Ben - three sons, all different women, all dead.... )

They will be raised in time for the party. I hope Murphy will enjoy it but she certainly will enjoy fighting outsiders. She always expressed her wish to be involved and this was probably the only way to grant that wish.

If there was a deal with Uriel some sort of free willed choice was involved and Murphy really started to behave like a Viking warrior. Freydis thought it hot.

Didn't Gard tell Harry that they can't be raised until all with memory of them were dead? That even the Allfather couldn't break that rule?

Not Lara, though. Too high connections. Someone lower in the hierarchy - why use a princess when a commoner can do the job... and is more easily vanished later if need be?

Because it's a character Harry knows. Makes him feel betrayed.

Harry was six when Malcolm died. He didn't meet Lara until the porno movie shoot. They didn't know he'd ever meet her then.

DF Spoilers / Re: Why is Marcone such a heavy magical hitter?
« on: January 04, 2021, 07:58:10 AM »
I don't agree with the idea of Harry being lazy.  Maybe he didn't work on veils as much as he could have, as he was not very good, and worked on his strong points. But he got better. He does not need his blasting rod as much as he once did. He appropriated Luccio's laser after he saw it in action. There's a fire refinement Ascher could have used - with the same power and a smaller cross section, she punches THRU Harry's shield, instead of it being reflected.  He worked nights and weekends for... 2 or 3 months, was it?  for that forcefield crystal Molly used on Demonreach. Eb seemed impressed. Even Mai did not seem sure she could breach it. Little Chicago was not simple, and took a lot of time and effort. Not a lazy man's tool.

We see how Ascher was massively boosted - she was burning Wardens from within, and the finger torch Harry said was, what, a century off?, while the Gatekeeper said Harry was the most powerful AND TALENTED of his generation - both terms. She was taught by Lasciel. Some Fallen may give their vessels/vassals more power - also recall when Nic offered her coin to Harry,  Harry asked why he should believe Nic would let him leave. Nic replied with the coin 'I doubt I could stop you" - as in, with Lasciel providing as much info as she does to Harry he could blow Nic halfway to Wacker Drive if he wanted. Nic may not be hurt, but he'd then be in no position to stop Harry from strolling out the door.  The Fallen were angels... and Harry seems to imply in Battle Ground that if they could trick the enemy army into coming too close to Michael's, Michael's security force would blow them away, as if it is no contest. So, angels are hugely powered. So, maybe most hosts only give their vassals 10% of what they can - what if Thorny and Lasciel give 25%?  Their coinholders would be much stronger.   And Thorny and Lasciel seem to be some of the thinkers of the Denarians, unlike, say, Magog or Ursiel. And you match up the coin to the recipient if you can - you want a good partnership. Magog is force and smash, Ursiel seems similar - plus a genoskwa is probably not high on potential for magic.  Harry and Marcone are thinkers. Well, Harry, when he stops to think.

You only soulgaze once, right? The Marcone soulgaze was before we see any coins... and it did not even tell Harry Marcone is probably not his real name... he may have some small aptitude. Harry could have told if he was a practicioner, but maybe not if the talent had withered .. to be revived by a coin.  His teleportation.... maybe it is just a different, temporary method of making a Way. A localized time-space warp. Picture a flat map. NYC to Maui is... 6000 miles, say. Fold it, they touch. He folded space. Nice trick - and maybe he is only really good at that one trick. He learned one really well, the others are crude. 10,000 hours to be a master? Well, maybe he spent 1000 on one little trick....

As for Merlin and Demonreach being impossibly magic-dense? Um, maybe impossible for HUMANS, recall in the myths, Merlin is usually only human on his mother's side, his father an incubus or spirit. Our rules may not apply.

3. Whoever was in cahoots with Justin, and dissappeared Harry into the system.

Number 3 is the most likely and that I think is the Merlin, recent WOJ indicates that the Merlin has been trying to manipulate Harry for years. Justin was a trusted senior Warden, exactly the person the Merlin would go to if he didn’t trust Lucio or Morgan in respect of Harry. It would be apt that the Merlin is guilty of a deliberate premeditated breach of the first law in killing Malcom Dresden having hounded Harry for a breach in self defence. The Merlin strikes me as a hypocrite of the first order.

It is only a violation if the Merlin used magic - what if he recruited/hired a Whamp to do Malcolm? Malcolm could have a smile on his face... but blood from his ear in an aneurysm. Seen the bleeding happen myself.  Maybe vamp saliva spikes the blood pressure higher and higher... until something pops....

Not Lara, though. Too high connections. Someone lower in the hierarchy - why use a princess when a commoner can do the job... and is more easily vanished later if need be? That Whamp may have been playing a power game trying to gain prestige from playing the White Court... until she was played.

On that note... what happens when Einrherjaren die in the mortal realm? Do they go back to Valhalla? Can they fight again? Do they have... resurrective immortality?

I think they do go back to Valhalla to fight again, but I think they have to be resurrected by Odin again. There was a discussion here about whether their re-resurrections cost Odin anything. We now know their initial resurrections are done with soulfire. I think their re-resurrections probably involve the same thing. I don't know it, but there usually isn't a free lunch in the Dresden Files.

i just get the feeling they likely regenerate - they seem totally unconcerned with injury - like when Murphy broke that guy's fingers training. He didn't even act like he was concerned he'd be out of action long - more like "I'll wake up tomorrow ALLLL better..." Not a Free Lunch - when they were resurrected they got a warrantee, they will get fixed up again if they need it again. All worked into the original price.  Like a Craftsman wrench, back in the day.

Here's one though - I think Murphy was supposedly Catholic, certainly Christian.  Next time they have lunch, might Uriel ask Vadderung about taking one of his? Her spirit was presumably headed for Christian Judgement, not Valhalla. Or is there a deal, maybe she is only an Einherjaren until Armageddon, getting in a little more practice? Then jump the Valhalla-Meggido shuttle?

Guy looks a bit thin for Michael - the perfect Michael passed a few years back - Merlin Olsen. Huge, bearded, kindly manner but you knew you didn't want to see him mad. I remember seeing him play ball.

The eebs were new. Not from the first maya. Somewhere after the Spanish conquest.

Does the first Maya refer to the Mayan people... or the Red King himself, though... I was thinking the Red King is the First Maya, first among the Court, and they are not of his line, but another one. Jim, in Cinder Spires, refers to the Spirearch (basically the king, though not an absolute ruler) as First Citizen of Albion as part of his title.
