DFRPG / Re: Help Decide My Fate

Well i started in high school with the advanced fighting fantasy books with a few friends on the stairs at lunch time (god we were geeks) but we quickly moved onto Warhammer fantasy role-play, which kinda got me and my friends hooked as it was a similar genre to the books and movies we loved such as david gemmell and conan.

So that kinda forms my recommendation i would pick a genre that you and your friends are familiar with and go with one of the bigger games in that field eg

If your are into World of darkness type stuff such as buffy, angel, dresden files then i would go for either the white wolf stuff or the D20 modern system.

If your group are into swords and sorcery i would go for classics such as D&D, runequest or Warhammer or pendragon for knights of the round table stuff.

If Sci-fi is your bag then my recommendation would be cyberpunk.

The reason i have went for the bigger games rather than the indie ones is that these all have a great wealth of background info and i feel are easier to pick up and play for the new gamer, or at least so i found when i started.

However i would recommend a rather quirky game my friend designed called "Best Friends" http://boxninja.com/ which is "a role-playing game about girlfriends and all their petty hatreds" to quote him. Might be what you are looking for as it is a great concept for any group male or female.

Well my worst mistake was in a system that we designed ourselves about 10 years ago it was in a Swords and Sorcery style but as we wanted a little unpredictability in our magic system instead of D10 to decide a result we used playing cards, 1-10 was a measure of success and face cards delivered different critical. However we decided to use Joker as a wild card in this instance the Referee would decide the result.

Well we were a long way into a campaign where our heroes were simple villagers tracking raiders who had either taken their wives and daughters as slaves, ruined their livelihoods or killed family.

The party were giving chase across the sea when i devised an attack on their ship engineered by the raiders, who had hired a mercenary to track them. i had hoped this would be a serious test to see how far my players had come and so had made this mercenary and his team very tough. However after about only 5 rounds of combat several critical on the players part and many fumbles on mine most of my guys were mortally wounded which i hate to say annoyed me. One of the PCs had received a bad wound but as they had a healer i was not worried. The healer though pulled the joker and i decided that it would be fun to give them a little exercise and ruled that a surge of power meant everyone on the ship was fully healed including the bad guys.

Guess what all of a sudden my guys couldn't miss and instead of an encounter i had intended to last 30 mins it went for the whole session of 3 hours we lost there players of a 6 man party and came within a whisker of losing the whole battle and so the entire party. I felt terrible and to compound it i said to the priest player "and so the Gods demonstrate the unpredictability of magic"

I will say that the players all said at the conclusion of the scenario that the 3 hour battle was the most thrilling experience they had role-played. I just felt bad for nearly killing a whole party and 3 very well developed players over a matter of wounded pride.

I dont see why it wouldnt be possible for someone to learn healing magaic as we have already seen examples of people with no magic ability learning one particular spell. Billy and the werewolves for example i reckon it would be pretty hard to learn to reshape your body and organs to another species so why wouldnt it be possible to reshape human organs.

Here is just one example of how i think it could work. Lets say that a dedicated surgeon or paramedic had some latent supernatural ability but was not picked up by the council or other bodies. Through their dedication one night they have tried everything they can to save some poor kid they know what needs to happen but they have neither time/resources to pull it off and then through dedication/faith they pull it off.

I would steer away from it being necassary to be a devout worshipper or anything as thats too limiting in PC developement as is displayed in the books you can have faith in things other than god. Harry's faith is in magic wheras micheals is in god, a healers could simply be in life. WHat i would be against is if someone playing this type of PC all of a sudden picked up a shotgun and started blasted away with no regard to peoples lives then i would impose damage to the abilities for a while.

Anyhoo thats just my 2 cents and it sounds like a nice charecter idea to me.

DFRPG / Re: Side Topic: Music for RPGs

All of coheed and cambrias stuff is very RPG

Also CKY flesh into gear is very cyberpunk.

As for background music for cyberpunk games i used a soundtrack from the manga cybercity.

For modern day horror ie D20 or dresden files one day soon i like to use an album by Two Gallants called "what the toll tells"
I also like "The Man Comes Around" by Johnny Cash.

Would like the challenge of playing a vanilla mortal in a supernatural setting.
