Site Suggestions & Support / Things for the new forum.
« on: July 31, 2011, 04:45:59 PM »
1. SMF Themes: You're using the generic theme right now. There are several others you could use. In fact, if you were so inclined you might have a theme creation contest, and/or a logo creation contest to celebrate it.

2. Good luck finding or creating a chatterbox that did everything the last one did. Or are you getting rid of it? (Also, if you use the standard generic chatterbox it will become a target for spammers. There's a redirect hack that people use. Simply turn off the account links in it and it's fixed.)

3. Do you or don't you plan in initiating the karma system that's built into SMF? I'm not suggesting either way.

4. SMF has plugins like Apple has aps. Which ones are we looking at using?

5. Would it be possible to have a simple page somewhere with "Jim's Suggested Reading List" or "What to read while waiting for the next book"? I consider myself a slow reader and I'm already done. People have got to be looking for more to read. If it's done right you might even be able to get some Amazon bucks out of the deal.

Congratulations on your..um....would calling it a rebirth be too corny considering the book that's out right now?

Author Craft / Lexile Measurements
« on: July 07, 2010, 12:43:28 AM »
So my son's school mailed out this new system for grading book levels called a "Lexile Measurement". It gives the reading level for the book and at what grade level you should be reading it. For example, Looking up Jim Butcher, he only has three books registered to date:

Storm Front - 830L
Fool Moon - 850L
Grave Peril - 730L

Now these numbers aren't directly correlary to grade level, but they do provide a wide range based on grade level. The breakdown can be found here:
http://www.lexile.com/about-lexile/grade-equivalent/grade-equivalent-chart/

From the looks of the charts, these three books can start to be read from 4th grade (early) to 6th or 7th (ideal) and a bit further would be simple reading with few challenging words for the student.

If you're a published writer you need to speak with your publisher to get your book submitted to: http://www.lexile.com. I'm not sure if there's a way a writer can have their own work graded officially. However, there's a nice tool that allows you to take a snippet of a book and have it tested here: http://www.lexile.com/analyzer/ (You need to register to use it).

I see this serving three purposes:
1. It should help you find what books are within your child's reading capacity.
2. It should help you figure out what age level will be able to read your books. This can help with that whole "speaking to your audience" thing.
3. Someone tell Jim that he needs to kick his publishers in the butt to get the rest of his work graded. The Codex Alera series isn't even there.

If you already knew about this system forget I mentioned it. If you didn't, then, well, there you go. Go forth and check it out.

Do you basically give your betas the "keys to the city" (all the character sheets, outlines, etc.) or do you only give them written, or partially written manuscripts?

Author Craft / Would you find this interesting?

I haven't put pen to paper yet, but before I start I thought I'd bounce the idea off a few people first. Since this is the "author craft" forum I'm starting here.

I was thinking about writing basically a poli-sci-fi series spanning 5-6 books. It would start in early college with a group of poli-sci students who become disenfranchised with the entire "the spirit of party" system we have today and set out to change government for the better, by getting rid of the two-party system. The span of the series would start with them in school, then seeing the inner workings of "the system" and growing disgusted with it, to volunteering with a non-party group (which they realize later is just a front for a party), to starting their own group, to working their way up through the political system, to becoming tainted in the same ways as the two-party system, to freeing themselves of the system, and eventually realignment of the government as a whole. Instead of using traditional means for political promotion they take fresh approaches of how to "get the word out".

Hopefully, this was clear enough in the concept.

I know it's not really in the realm of traditional fantasy, but I figured you'd all be able to tell me if I'd be wasting my time before I start in on it.

Particularly on the Dresden Spoilers page, the threads tend to fall off the first page too quickly. Some threads you may be following tend to drop down to page two (and sometimes page three) in a flash. Additionally, this particular forum has more stickies than any other (Which was addressed in a different thread. DO NOT EAT.). Increasing the page thread count by 10-20 should be plenty.

Thank you.
