Author Craft / Re: Structure...?
« on: December 25, 2006, 06:18:52 PM »
I used to try a sort of structure or outline and my brain ceased working so I threw that out the proverbial window.  Now I just write as it comes and try to keep the characters as close to my extremely loose outlines as I can.  But if they come up with something good, I may just decide to go along with it.  ^^

Or maybe I do follow structure though I don't know it and when the writer's board gets up'n running someone can inform me of this.

Author Craft / Re: Writing Sequels
« on: December 25, 2006, 06:09:12 PM »
I am almost sure that by the time Jim got his publishing deal he had written 3 of The Dresden Files books, It's what made them sign him if I remember correctly.

Surely if your in the mood to write another book you should just go with it.

Yeah, I'm fairly certain he had the first three finished and that's what cinched the deal.

So having the first few books in a series completed could get you a deal or it could not.  I know in my big fantasy world I intend to try and finish the first two books - they're more like companion books than 1st and 2nd since they occur in the same general timeframe - before I go anywhere trying to get them published.  And after that there's three sequel's I'm plotting along with a whole story on one character plus three that go into the world's history.

Author Craft / Re: How powerful should a protagionist be?
« on: December 25, 2006, 06:52:41 AM »
Should never be too powerful.  If they're too powerful, then there is nothing to throw them up against.  The good protagonists are the one's where they have weaknesses that can be exploited by those around them and not be all powerful.  They can be beaten down but will get up and fight back though they're beaten and battered to hell'n back.

Harry's a grand example of a good protagonist in my opinion.

Hence why Superman has never been a good protagonist in my mind.  He's just too powerful and the only thing that can bring him down is kryptonite.

No. 1 - The image = AWESOMENESS ITSELF.  Seeing that the second I get on the boards, still half-asleep, made a good way to wake up.

No. 2 - SPORK, ZOMG!  I am in love with ThinkGeek now.  Must.   Get.  Money.  To.  Buy.  Shirts.

Author Craft / Re: Your Writer's Place
« on: December 18, 2006, 08:34:33 PM »
Currently my writing spot is on the couch with the laptop either on the table or propped on a book in my lap.  Apartment is pretty small so not many places to move around to and this is the best one to sit at...also here, World of Warcraft doesn't lag so much.

I've got a whole list of music I've been listening to lately when I write (new Evanecence, some anime music, random stuff gotten off soundtrack put together for a book, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, few songs from LotR soundtracks, etc).  But the music varies depending on how long its been listened to usually.

Usually I just sit on the couch and brood on one of my worlds or story ideas until my brain finally gets that I want to get some work done and kicks into gear.

And I agree, laptops are great for writing.  I had laptop and desktop before I got married and had most of the stuff I was working majorly on on the laptop.  Now, of course, everything's on the laptop plus a handful of older games 'cause my three year old laptop just can't run new games.  Hence why the hubbin's shiny new desktop is great to have.  ^^

Author Craft / Re: Working against yourself
« on: December 14, 2006, 07:48:29 PM »
I continually work against myself.  Working on one story and get an idea for another, end up abandoning Story A to work on Story B and then - lo and behold! - here comes idea for Story C.

I just get too many ideas and want to work on them all but don't have the ability to.  Very frustrating.  And the cause of many old stories sitting idle on my harddrive for years.

Anyone else here too impatient for outlines?

*raises hand*  Mainly 'cause I can never follow the damn things.  Only two stories of mine (the major two right now in my big fantasy world) have loose outlines and the one I've been working on for the past few months has already deviated from it if I recall correctly.  But then it jogged right back to hop back in line so its following the outline and not all at the same time.  Very confusing.

Posting because I find this amusing...I'm slowly forming a character who's spawning from a poem that was inspired solely by the word snickersnack.  And he has a mentor/trainer guy who's dead but not dead.  Beyond that, I've got nothing.

But it was all spawned by the word snickersnack.  And I felt I should share.

Does the main character weild a vorpal sword? And more importantly, was it brillig? Did the slithy toves gyre and gimble in the wabe? Were the borogoves all mimsy? And did the mome raths outgrabe? Questions that needed asking, I feel.

Heh, I don't even know the main character's name yet...need to work on that, I do.

Okay.  I thought you were suggesting one website for us all to upload our stuff to, not each getting their own.

Blar, confusion...  XP

Well, it seems to have the least problematic wording jargon of all of them.  Might be our best bet.

Yeah, a website would work but what free hosting site?  Bravenet, maybe?  'Cause all the other old one's that I used to use before I actually got my own site have gone down the tube (Geocities, Tripod, Angelfire...).  And how exactly would that be done?  All us of get the password to it or e-mail it to one person who keeps track of everything?
