Yes and no.
Captcha has been compromised , so some sites that include it as a forum feature to enable have had issues with it. If it's an automatic installation bit, chances are you'll have more issues than someone who does their own implementation of it. The reason behind that is the automatic or plug in ones have the source code sitting out there free to use and view - so you code around it. Whereas if you implement your unique way of doing it, the source code is unavailable for exploit - meaning that there needs to be a human involved - and spammers generally prefer to infect many sites, rather than stumble across one unique set up and make an effort (course that also depends on the site and traffic - big busy sites are worth the effort, small sites like my own aren't).

They are, the script just gets the error page instead of a successful add. Since you are stopping the post with a simple if/then, you kill off all the scripts and just have to worry about actual humans doing it.

It can also be done on sites that don't require a membership to post, just include the check on the post page.

What's happening is that there's a script out there that can tag SMF forums and add accounts without human intervention. I ran into a similar problem a few years back with my Snitz forum - but easily defeated the scripts with simply adding a textbox to the member add page that expected a value of 123 - On the page before it (the I agree page) I added a label saying "REMEMBER THE SECRET CODE IS 123 , YOU HAVE TO ADD THAT TO GET AN ACCOUNT!).

I went from hundreds of spam accounts to none.

I use a different number for my debit card. 12345 is only a luggage PIN combination.

No problem, altho it was pretty strange his pin number was the exact same one that I use for my luggage.

Same here.  But Dina guessed I was female!  She's one of the only ones ever to do so.  *gives cookie*  ;D

I am guessing you're a female.

Yes to the import - there's an option on the file menu.  I haven't had a problem with anything in Firefox, and it's all I use at home.  Very occasionally something won't load and I use Chrome instead, but I can't even remember for which sites.

I know you can turn Adblock off for specific sites on the fly  (just click the icon you get in the corner of the browser)...maybe not loading flash would be the same?

Flashblock allows for turning flash on and off as needed.

Can you make it so that the "Don't Show Avatar's" preference option hides my avatar at the top of the screen?

I use the "Don't Show Avatar's" option, which keeps the screen looking more subtle while Im at work.  But I also use the New Replies and Unread Post links at the top of the screen, so I can't simply hide it.

Use firefox and add adblock at work.

Right click on the avatar and just block the image. I see very few images on this forum because of my settings. It also helps with ads and all the rest.

Adblock, noscript, and not loading flash on my system makes for a very fast and clutter free no advertising surfing browser. As a result I've been unable to surf with IE do to the annoyances many sites create with their flash/slide/oversize adverts since I took control of what I watch :) .
