DF Spoilers / Re: In defense of the WC
« on: November 17, 2022, 01:59:31 AM »
I don't think the WC knows Justin had any other 'prentice than Harry; they only learned of Harry himself after Justin died.

Elaine's presence there was utterly unknown.

Remember -- Justin had turned heavily into Black magic:  mind-control, Outsider-summoning, and we don't know what else.  I don't think he had *ANY* contact with the WC, because it would have been too easy for "sensitives" among them to notice this sort of thing.

I dunno.. the paranoiacs there might have spies on their spies.....  hard to believe that NONE of the WC knew about Harry. Even Eb? I bet at least some of the seniors knew, or Luccio, as Justin had been a warden. He wasn't a low profile guy in the crowd.

But they rooted-out all of Peabody's work; I presume they checked Harry, and would have been satisfied there were no "protocols" in place.

Not sure on that. Harry likely does not give permission, and going in unapproved is a naughty.

The Loup could also be someone off a cadet line from several generations back. . I also question if a shapeshifter like Tera could carry a semi-human to term, and if it would be considered part of his bloodline.

A cadet branch generations back could have left Ireland during the Famine. Many did. Might I point out the odious Daleys in Chicago?

I doubt Harry could do much to the curse, at least without a great amount of work and ritual. McFinn likely did about all he could. Who could do something? Well, i think it also depends whose power did it. St. Patrick? I'd imagine a heavy hitter in human terms, but less than, say, a Mab. But if St. Patrick was just a channel from Above.... yeah, even a Mother or Uriel may be overwhelmed, if Above went in large. But ... likely Mab would work. Upstairs usually uses some restraint in their works... they found Michael's Panic room, and that was... Raphael? was it? a named angel, if not one of the top guys.  But he didn't blanket the place with a monster veil. A good one, but I am sure he could have done more.

But Nic isn't going to get forgiven unless he truly repents and changes his life.  Even if he does, that doesn't change who he was or what he did before hand.  Before she met Malcolm and apparently repented and changed her life around, Margaret was a piece of work and was headed for Hell and damnation.  Those who knew her before Malcolm will tell you that.  Michael might have faith that even Nic can repent and be forgiven for his sins, i.e. especially now that he has the Grail.  However until he does repent and is forgiven, Nic is what he is, and that isn't a very nice person.  That part of his life remains what it was, repented or not, forgiven or not.

Oh, no one EXPECTS Nic to repent and atone. But the path is open should he choose to take it. I am saying Margaret may have been HEADED that way before she changed her ways. But it doesn't say she was definitely damned yet. She might yet have been that kid that hangs out with the wrong sort. the kids with records, felonies, many have been in prison. You expect she is on that path.. but she hasn't done that felony YET. Only misdemeanors. Even the sanctimonious WC has not decreed she be executed. She may have still been dancing the tightrope.

Historically, Jim publishes an anthology when he has enough short stories and novellas strewn across other works - see Side Jobs or Brief Cases. It can take some time to get enough to comprise a volume though. I do applaud his commitment to his readers.

The thing I wonder is does each head have a personality? I mean each one has a brain right? What happens if one head goes for a treat another goes for a thrown stick and the third wants to perform a trick?

I dunno. Women will tell you men have two heads, but only enough blood to run one at a time....

Of course the mantle is more integral to Molly -  the Lady is Fae royalty - the knight is a Fae AGENT. (BTW, Harry, that is the word you were looking for to describe your relationship to Mab. She is not your Queen. She is your employer, your patron, your client. You are a hireling, an agent. )

Mab runs Winter's day-to-day ops. She's CEO. But The Knight, IIRC serves WINTER, not just Mab. So senior staff (read, Molly) can require things. And, should she ever want to step up, Mother is Chairman of the board/majority stockholder. She can override Mab.

I have to point out, though, Chauncy could have been EXPECTING her to damned.... "She's on the way!" - as many have said about HARRY himself - plenty would have been willing to see the warlock chopped.... The Dark Prince couldn't quite set the hook.

...and "piece of work" does not mean damned. Maybe Grey thought she was a Grade A witch. Hated her. Does not damn here either.

Heck, it does not mean she was NOT headed there. But there seems to be almost infinite forgiveness available for the truly penitent - didn't Michael even say if it was sincere, they would take NICODEMUS back?

In which case Lea still overpowers any individual Walker in creation,

I don't think so. Uriel can destroy galaxies. reduce that for his foot troops, an angel is at least planetary level. In Battle Ground, it was assumed even Ethniu would not play at Michael's with angels hanging around. And Ethniu is well above Mab, who is well above Lea. Even if Lea can beat the average Outsider, she is likely at a disadvantage against a Walker, and easily overmatched by HWWB or their other elites.

Two barrels HWWB AND Lea. I would posit Lea (She Who Likes To Walk Hounds) is more powerful than a single Walker and more than capable in aiding Harry in turning a Walker back upon Justin.

Justin in the main Dresdenverse is the proverbial dead parrot. He probably was working for Nameless, and was tasked with recovering Bob following Kemmlers defeat and later collecting Wizard Starborn  and to try and turn them to The Circle/Black Council, but Nameless was aware of this failure hence it is likely Nameless who Maeve is referring to. By this point three of his schemes had already been thwarted by Harry if indeed as I posit Cowl is Nameless

Even if Lea is as powerful as a Walker, which I doubt, I think HWWB was described as a prince among them. I thought his power level was more towards angel level.

Saw an interesting post on one of the fb groups that part of the reason why the WC members hate harry is the favouritism shown to him.
Can't remember the og post and poster. So i will
Just list some of the thinks i think may cause people to hate him.

1) instead of killing him, eb served him becoz he mentored his mother. 2) he advertises himself in the media 3) he started a war with the red council (sure it wasn't his fault but theh don't know that) 4 he's anti social. Harry doesn't attend council meetings unless forced. 5) he doesn't get that hes guven special treatment. How many young wizards are in contact with SC members to the extent harry is

I'd say to assess at least some of these we have to know more of what the average WC knows.

1) Yes, he killed Justin, but I see at least 3 (may be more) ways to look at it:

a) He killed. He's a warlock. Die!

b) WTF? A KID took out a WARDEN? How? What are we dealing with? (see the reaction of the wardens on Demonreach when they are asked to arrest him)

c) That warden summoned a freaking WALKER, an OUTSIDER. HE deserved to die. Putting him with the Blackstaff, we can kill him if we need to, but it may be he was ill-treated by the WC as well. Plus, said Warden was doing mind control on the presumed missing and presumed dead Elaine. I'm thinking the WC has not connected the Elaine with Justin to the Elaine in the phone book. Why would Justin enthrall a small timer?

2) I doubt most know or care. They will assume he is considered a charlatan.

3) I think he was poorly thought of even before that. If it was just this ... his opinion might rise when he WON the war and eradicated the Reds.

4) I think attendance of more than a few are spotty at best. The main council chamber holds, what, a third of them? When they  were filling Simon's SC spot and calling roll, more than a couple of the older ones, the more powerful ones you would expect to be there, knowing their name will arise, are missing. Wizards go their own way.

5) A few do get SC contact. Ramirez. Chandler. Also, remember Harry is a regional commander for the Wardens, he's not some scrub. Connection to Eb, well, that's his old master, so it doesn't count. Also started before Eb was SC. Injun Joe is Eb's buddy. He doesn't see Joe much without Eb there. He doesn't see Mai, or Martha Liberty. No indication he ever saw Simon, or Christos until the Battle of Chicago - he had to ask who he was. The Merlin is always as the Merlin, at court. He did see him when the manhunt was on - but he's also a PI - it looks like a professional consult. And the Gatekeeper... I think they all RESPECT the Gatekeeper, but even the Merlin seems to defer to him at times.... I think they let him do as he pleases, don't try to figure out why, and NEVER ask.

Also bear in mind... Justin could have believed he had Harry enthralled when Harry turned about and possibly freed the Walker who had a grudge against being summoned.  Like against Sells. HWWB easily had Justin outmatched

Because we know the Queens cannot actually have a mortal directly killed, except via their Knights.

So Titania having the Gruffs attack is solid proof that Harry doesn't have mortals' normal workaday immunity.

Unless he is her Emissary, simply by fiat of the Queen of Air and Darkness (or maybe it's Harry's "3 services" bargain, plus her word).  He may not need to actually "accept" the job.

As noted, Titania's attack seems pretty solid evidence that Harry does indeed have "standing" as a Winter agent...

But couldn't a Winter or Summer Queen thereby kill any vanilla human they wish by "Oh, I named him my Emissary in charge of watching for tidal waves in Nebraska. Just hadn't told him yet"

The tense of the phrase when Mab talks to Harry in the snow storm is past tense. Not I will choose, but I have chosen.  Which is why the Gruff's attacked at Michael's.

She talks to Harry AFTER the attack at Michael's. The two Gruffs that attack at the start of Chapter 7, right after Mab leaves are described as

Yes, Mab did name Harry Winter's Emissary in Summer Knight, however it wasn't until the end of the book that Aurora met her death because Harry set Toot and the rest of Za'Gard on her.  Before her death Titania had no real reason to attack him.  Titania was pissed at the Winter Court, true, because she blamed Mab for her Knight's murder.  I guess by extension you could say that since Harry was named Emissary and trying to get to the bottom of it on Mab's behalf she'd attack him too, but there was nothing personal about it.  Since Summer Knight? Yes, Titania has a very personal grudge against Harry and will attack him if the rules allow.

An Emissary seems to be an agent or arbiter - not necessarily linked to a cause. Luccio asks Harry which Emissary he might prefer, and he says the Archive. She is not in either camp. Harry has no Winter standing at that point. i don't think hiring one gets their loyalty. In fact, unless there is a rule we have not yet seen, at the start of Small Favor,  Titania could have hired Harry to find Marcone. Let the Denarians kidnap him, send Eldest Gruff to break in and whack him after Harry finds him, and the finger points to the kidnappers...

Mab did indeed coerce him. She knew that naming him as Emissary would free Titania to attack him and that was the whole point. Mab lied. She named him Emissary before she asked him to serve.  The term is fait accompli. Butcher deceived you by pulling a fast one. He expects you to ignore the implicit deception.

Titania attacked him at the beginning of Small Favor before Mab even shows up. He's not her Emissary at that point. He has to take the job. He has no standing in Winter at that time. Titania may simply want him dead for Aurora. Those guys also chased various Carpenters... they are not emissaries.
