DFRPG / Re: More Holy Swords Than Three?
« on: April 04, 2011, 07:41:16 PM »
The Knights of the Cross are pretty interesting in my opinion, but they also have a large problem as well. There are supposedly only three holy swords, two of which eventually fell into Dresden's hands and were never redistributed. First of all, WHY IN HELL would the church even allow Dresden to keep such relics? Wouldn't they want to take them and redistribute them immediately to worthy successors. There is no time for these swords to sit around idle, when there is a constant war to fight against evil.

Secondly, just THREE SWORDS in the entire world? Come on, there are numerous legends of TONS of other holy swords. What about the sword of Jenne D'arc for instance? She's a canonized saint who performed miracles on the battlefield, so don't tell me her blade wouldn't be a holy relic comparable to the swords that the Knights of the Cross wield.

Honestly, can only THREE SWORDS make a difference in the ENTIRE WORLD! Definitely shows the church doesn't care enough to fight evil if they depend on only three people to be their champions, while the regular priests just give their weak ass prayers and hope to make the world a better place. So SHOULD there be more than three holy swords in the Dresdenverse?

bujins dead on, the Knights of the cross are 3 because there are 3 swords, remember that they have a specific goal to fight the Denarians or more specifically to save the hosts if possible and kill if not.

now thats does not mean that there are only 3 holy relics of the white god that fight evil, these are just the ones that are focused on in the books. in a game i ran i had a player want a sword exactly like the swords of the cross, and we came upon a good idea, that there were swords out there called the swords of the archangels, the order of the sword [as we called it] was to defend the world against the outsiders.

now there is no reason why there isnt another order whos specific goals are the defeat of vampires, mages, the fey.  and where does the power of these swords come from well there are thousands of saints bones or items that once belonged to them.

« on: September 26, 2010, 11:54:02 AM »
i have no idea if this has been covered previously, if it has i appologise, and could someone point me in the right direction.

if not: has anyone created a cheat sheet that clearly covers thaumaturgy and evocation among other powers?

i have seen the ones at the back of the book and while ok, i feel they dont cover or explain enough. while i have the book these sheets are mainly for my players.

thanks for any help you can give

thanks for the ideas from other sources i will look into those as well.

however i must agree with richard-chilton, about the midnight mayor/madness of angels. i love these books and some of the ideas in them are going into my game, especially the begger king, and the trash elementals.

and from what i understand there are more cctv cameras in london than in any other city in the world. so i agree; why?

there is a wiki that is compiling cities it can be found here: http://dresdenfilesrpg.wikidot.com/

on the rest, without giving too much away as i know that some of the people who will be in the game lurk around here.
a] im leavin the monarchy out far too much temptation for players to mess with this hehe, however im saying they are generally protected due to the heat messing with a royal would bring on the supernatural world, and i like playing at street level maybe county level campaigns.
b] im saying that the british police are largely unaware of the supernatural world, but there is a SO unit who well deal with Special Operations hehe.
c] there is so much we could do with borris johnson hehe, but again im keeping this level out of the game.
d] here i can help, after reading about the rise in foxes in london and other wild animals i decided to have a floating city aspect WERE-NATION, a small group of weres are annoyed that their 'culture' is not represented in the accords and are building a small nation in and around london, much to the chargrin of well every other supernatural nation.

when it comes to jack the ripper im leaving him out, far too many london based supernatural games where hes come up, im putting him down to the workings of the occultist Nicolas Hawksmoor, who created alot of the churches in and around the areas the ripper killed people, in various occult books on london they suggest that he built his churches along various ley lines and they spell out an occult symbol when linked together, some have suggested that these churches are near some of the worst attrocitied carried out in london, and it is due to this occult symbol.

now my campaign [without going into it too much] is going to be about the giants of london, black dogs, black annis and the mythical foundings of london also the gates of london.

hope this helps, and i would love to hear of everyones dresden london im sure there are great ideas ive missed.

im preparing a dresdenised version of London for my university gaming group, and i have to say much of what ironchicken has come up with i have as well.

some of my aspect for London are:
CITY OF A THOUSAND FACES [london has over 300 different languages spoken within its boarders]
WHAT LIES BENEATH [London has another city under the current one, it has hidden station, lost rivers etc, and of course the dreaded smog which in the 50s killed over 8 thousand people [can we say outersider?] ]

my take on the supernatural side of London again is simular to Ironchickens, the city of London has a stand alone government called the corporation of london, as we know. in the dresdenverse this is run by the dragon of england, tricked into the position by merlin [the original] and king arthur [he must protect england till some unknown deal is met], the fae courts are represented by Jack Frost [king of winter or so he says] and the Green man [emissary of summer] and a yet unamed wizard [im ering towards a sect of wizards called the knights of the round table or some such, in RL london the knights are a huge group who are quite secretive and do lots of good deeds for the city of london]

this is as much as i can remember while im at work , but i did find that there are alot of books about the 'hidden london'. i mean i lived just outside of london for over 20yrs and never knew they lost a river somewhere under the city hehe.

hope this helps

in the game im currently writing the players will all work for a group of supernaturals who are the freeholders of London.

their job is well exactly the same as the wardens.

from what i remember about the books, not having them to hand this sound dead on, apart from names.

it might be an idea to add unless you know its name, and of course how much protection that actually affords. from what i remember even though harry knew Chauncy's real name i got the feeling that this didnt protect him from the demon, it was the circle strength? the name just contacted the being he wanted to talk to.

DFRPG / Re: themes and threats [possibly stupid question]
« on: April 12, 2010, 09:35:06 PM »
no, london has over 2000 years of history and has a very rich occult history, which is as old as the city, i have enough locations to fill 4 sheets of locations hehe.

the theme/threat in question is: city of ancient myth and power. and as im thrying to cut down the themes to 3 i thought this could cover both the positive and negative aspects of the theme/threat.

DFRPG / themes and threats [possibly stupid question]
« on: April 12, 2010, 07:52:40 PM »
i apologise if this is a stupid question.

i have been working on making a dresdenverse version of London. and my first run through came up with 5 themes and 6 threats! i was able to get it to 3 and 3, but boiling it down to 3 overall has been impossible.

however i came up with a theme/threat, but it embodies both a theme and a threat, is that possible?

i would love to hear people views.

thanks in advance.

DFRPG / Re: Spellcasting and Stress
« on: April 08, 2010, 06:50:11 AM »
i havent read the PDFs just yet, but you are forgetting possibly the most important aspect of the question - what is a scene and how long is it?
Fate says that a scene has a purpose and once that purpose has been obtained the scene is over. A scene could be a conflict, a 'talkie' [as my players call them] or anything of the sort, thus ranging from a minute to hours.

thus the ability to cast 8 spells in the space of a few minutes is spectacular [in the case of combat], no other game ive ever played in gives you that level of power. and this does seem to be in line with the Books, its only when harry is in conflict is it that the books point out that magic is stressful, and as the above poster said guns are easier. when hes in his lab etc or not in combat its only the 'big' magics, or the magics hes not familiar with that seem to wear him out.

hope this helps

DFRPG / signators of the accord and accord cities [many questions]
« on: April 03, 2010, 07:40:33 PM »
sorry for the long list of questions, all background info for a campaign idea i have, i hope it makes some sort of sense as i just wrote what poped into my head hehe. i may add to the list as i think of more.

1] who has signed the accord? [is there a list in the books?].
a] i know that the vampires have signed on but is it all vampire courts or just the white and red courts.
b] is there any sort of shapeshifter signator? i mean most creatures seen as were-creatures [wolfs etc] seem to be pack animals, but dont seem to have a central organised group like vamps and wizards. the real question here is there a organised group of were-creatures that spans more than one city? if not what would it look like?
c] is there any sort of evil/dark like groups who are signators? [other than vampires], im sure that i remember reading that the denarians are signators, but i cant find where i read it to save my life.
d] is the exact nature and laws of the accord gonna turn up in the rpg?

2] is there such thing as a accord city, ie a city that has its own accord, maybe a addendum to the overal world accord. we know that edinburgh is the HQ of the white council, do we think its written in the accord that only they are allowed to live in the city, thus no vamps etc.
a] if there is such a thing how does it interact with the world accord?

DFRPG / Re: Greetings and questions

well maybe i can help but im no expert, and luckly enough you have a few on this board reguarly, including the writers of the RPG hehe
1)www.dresdenfilesrpg.com, this has a lot about the types of things you can play and might help explain them abit more. but from what ive read they will be like templates. therefore if you want to play a knight of the cross you need these supernatural abilities [supernatural stunts]. and a hight concept [aspect] explaining the character background.

2) remember that most of the supernaturals harry encounters including wizards all have an extened lifespan, so sticking with a bunch of characters over a long time wont be a problem. of course there are a few exceptions like knights, while Shiro was old he was still a mortal with a normal life expectancy, as would mortal practitioners, and maybe were-creatures

3) ive looked into this myself and a few people are posting their city building on RPGnet. i believe you would give aspects to the important parts of the city. while in not american, chicago is the hub of a massive transportation network and why many see it as important, and it is used by wizards for their meetings, as well as the base for other supernaturals. that might have an aspect, but that it is big and dangerous might not, im sure in cities thats a given. try here [http://spazingames.blogspot.com/search/label/Dresden Files]for his take on london.

4) nope! hehe. most of us here cant wait as well. i have players that want me to make up the system so they can play in the dresdenverse lol

well i hope ive helped a little, but with this board more than likely someone in the know and with more of a grip on things than me will post hehe.

DFRPG / names for other Outsiders
« on: May 22, 2009, 12:33:44 PM »
im working on a plot revolvoing around the reapearance of the London Smog, in 1952 it killed 4,000 people and overall was resposable for over 12,000 deaths and made over 100,000 people ill. the idea is the smog is the physical form of one of the Outsiders.

but trying to come up with a cool sounding name is beyond me lol. i love the name 'He who walks behind', and in my opinion all the outsiders should have names like this.

so i would love to see what ideas people have got for names for the Outsiders?

thank you iago, comming from you not much else needs to be said on the subject hehe.

in regards to the blind spot obviously they have some sort of adverse effect on the characters ability to cast magic, but what will the 'up side' be of taking such a blindspot?
hopefully the answer wont give way too much of the upcomming system so it can be answered hehe [of course give away as much as you want, i wont tell a soul hehe]

oh and BTW love SotC!

DFRPG / how will SotC/Fate 3.0 deal with downsides from the books?
« on: May 19, 2009, 01:33:03 PM »
let me explain: harry on a few occasions says that he has alot of power but lacks the subtly to do 'fiddly' magic like veils. he is extremely powerful but morgan is naturally better at on the fly magic than he is. fae have an aversion to iron. etc, there are alot more but i think these will be enough.

my point is that SotC/Fate, doesnt have a system like many of the current roleplaying systems where players can take downsides, and thus gain an advantage elsewhere on their character sheet.

i mean its isnt hard to bolt a downside system to SotC but i was wondering if there was one top be added how would it be handled? for each downside a free stunt etc is gained that doesnt remove from the fate pool? will downsides be bolted onto certain stunts?

of course i have only just read the system, havent played or run it yet [although im gonna be using it for a starwars game], and maybe im overlooking something which is in the system which will be able to show why harry is seen as one of the more powerful practicioners but hes usless at most non destructive magic? i know later in the books he begins to expand his kknowledge, but he still says many times into the later books that molly is easily better than he is at certain spells. and after reading SotC i cant see that they would make each spell a stunt as that would really change the feel of the dresden books, i expect the system will be more like the magic system from spirit of the season.

i would love to hear peoples views on how this could be handled etc
