So far I haven't been able to come up with a Thread worthy of being included in the Reference section. If you don't mind me asking, what am I doing wrong? How is a Thread judged good enough to be saved in the Reference Section?
Theory 3: Demonreach & The Warden. Basic theory is based off WOJ & Eb's notes. Gets into the idea that Kemmler used to be The Warden of the White Council & was former custodian of Demonreach. I do know this one pretty well & could reconstruct it, but it isn't mine. No clue, what post best personifies the theory.
Theory 5: Magical theory question (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,33007.0.html). An awesome thread in which how magic works is actively being discussed. Still on the front page too.
I could never find the theory that explained how Harry could be Kemmler reborn. I find this one interesting and really want to get a look at it. not to mention i never heard the second part, that kemmler might have been conected to DR
While it is not the most fleshed-out theory, I think the prospect that Maggie LeFay founded the Black Council (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,27584.msg1182348.html#msg1182348) is on to a really solid idea.
i think Ms. Duck's explanation makes the most sense. We have WoJ that Erlking is only one of several beings that can call the wild hunt. Given that this is also true outside the dresdenverse (in early mythology) and that in early mythology Odin is one of those beings that can call the Hunt, it's reasonable to assume Odin has that same power in the dresdenverse. Add to that Erl's comment that he messes with those who messes with his hunt and you have a reasonable cause for Erl to mess with Odin's plans, (i.e. Marcone). Add to that Erl's domain is on the other side of the FBI building and you now have a pretty solid case for it being Erl. Plus the magical item here turns people into one of the greatest hunters known to human kind, that right in line with the way Erl likes it.
What about the accepted theory that the Erlking was responsible somehow for the hexenwulfen belts? I haven't been able to find that post anywhere.
I would suggest Harrys medical records as a topic.
As far as I can remember he had a bullet in his hip, a morning star in his leg, a melted hand and a lot more I probably forgot^^.

When is something considered an "accepted theory"? Myself, I've always thought the idea of the Erlking being responsible for the belts was a WAG with little or nothing to support it. To be a reference item, shouldn't a theory have some kind of structure of related facts in the books supporting the idea?
I'm not trying to start up a debate here about the belts and the Erlking, I'm just saying that the only supporting clue in favor of that theory is the fact that the Erlking is a hunter, and the belts turned people into insane werewolves. Given the fact that practically every major supernatural being is a predator of some kind, that's not a very strong connection.
How about this one:
http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,28712.0.html
It's not really a "theory" or "resource", but it is a lot of fun.
By indexing it, I ment add a link to it in the index sticky.
And I ment to put a link to it under a new bolded section in the index sticky labled "Fun" I'd move the "Dresden Files Geek Code" to that section too.
(this is me trying to encourage you to tweak the index when you port a topic)
Silly purity test doesn't include "15" in the number of Dresden novels you've read. :D
Parts of the next book don't count. ::)
Yeah, but I've read it in its entirety!
Silly purity test doesn't include "15" in the number of Dresden novels you've read. :D
*counts on his fingers*
I R confused
The count includes "Side Jobs." :D
And what about those people that bought the books with the individual short stories? How high does their count go bearded gnome?
And what about those people that bought the books with the individual short stories? How high does their count go bearded gnome?
I have all those, too.
Maybe this exists somewhere, and I've just been unable to find it. (Newbie that I am to these forums)
I would really like to see a thread dedicated to the physical appearances of the different characters. I've been trying to map out the general features, height and reference photos (based on interviews of Jim Butcher) and having some help fine tooth combing the novels would be great.
The "Our World" RPG volume has that in spades.
Thank you. :D I guess I have to run out and get it now.
Started new thead on Harry is Kemmler reborn. (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,34887.msg1670089.html#msg1670089)
I don't think there's enough details for a Harry=Merlin thread, but perhaps a general Merlin reference thread (who he might be, everything he's done, what his goals are/were) would be useful.
knnn, read the comments I added to his post. Especially the ones under the "fun" section ;)
Sorry to have wasted half an hour of your time... ;D. While I do believe those reference threads should be saved, they are still floating around the first three pages in the spoilers section. To me this means they can still "grow". Certainly we should keep an eye on them.
Another nomination for "fun" would be the Top selling books of the dresdenverse (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,33812.msg1570657.html#msg1570657). It's locked already, so no more maturing. Yes, it's one of mine. ;)
Do you mean knnn's [CD spoilers] Corruption WAG November 29, 2012 topic? (which I found via his profile, looking at recent posts => topics) -Serack
Yes, that's the one. I tried to find it in his posts, and failed. Thx for the tip.
Yah, for the longest time I never noticed that there is a "topics" tab in that part of the profile.
http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,36206.0.htmlUm, not sure on the correct protocol here, but I'll second the nomination of this thread.
Um, not sure on the correct protocol here, but I'll second the nomination of this thread.ok not trying to be a total downer but shouldn't the fact the subconscious harry having the same age in the dream totally invalidate this theory? in CD harry remarks he is already begun to look noticeably older these last few years, specifically in relation to thomas? just wondering because if probability of outcome isn't a prerequisite i'd nominate a few that will probably be floaters..
Um, not sure on the correct protocol here, but I'll second the nomination of this thread.
So I have a question for you all -- if a thread has been nominated, how do you decide whether to move the thread over here?
[I ask for a purely selfish reason. One of my threads which was nominated was just deleted, which makes me sad, but also, because it was nominated, I did not think to try to save all the comments to it. I want to do a better job trying to archive (at least for myself) other threads which I think are important, so knowing the process may help me narrow down what I need to do.]
as its my finest work. hope i got the link right, had to copy it by memory. I'm on a ds3. :'(
I hadn't seen this topic and it's really stimulating some good ideas for meThanks
Um, not sure on the correct protocol here, but I'll second the nomination of this thread.
Just some some the stuff you moved. Thank you Serack and Elegast! ;D
And, I nominate this thread (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,36778.msg1772511.html#msg1772511). While I don't agree with everything in it (especially Odin being Merlin) I do think it has interesting insights that shouldn't be lost.
Totally seconding and adding this one.
I believe this is the topic (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,36753.0.html) you wish to nominate. So did I make the cut with this or not? I wouldn't bother about it if I thought it was cause you all are too busy but you've added almost a dozen new threads to the DFC.

Either it wasn't locked when I tweaked/spliced it on the 12th of this month, or I missed that it was locked. We generally wait until the lock before porting it.Oh, I'll know to lock it manually first then.
BTW, I offered to help splice it together because I liked itThanks :D
do you see any formatting changes you would like done that you can't do from your PS3? If so let me know and I will see what I can do.Not right now, thanks though. Sorry my organizational skills generally suck even without Ps3 posting.
My first attempt to organize what is known about Margaret LeFay (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,36221.0.html)
I'm am considering doing an expanded version of it.
I can fix that. I'll make edits to it to clean it up. I can even change the title to just focus on Margaret. Should I?
*shrug* what are you trying to accomplish with the reference?
Title it based on that. By the way, if you need some help getting the bullets ironed out, you can pull my code from that earlier response I made about the sub bullets by using the quote function and use it as a guide on how to get it done.

Oh, I was still working on cleaning up the bullets. Looks like its been locked. Guess I can always try again on a new thread.
I've never unlocked a locked thread and kept it in the spoilers section afterwords.
Would you like to keep that one as the primary, or do you want to do the new one? I'll unlock it again for now, but it seems that it will lock again sometime tonight, and any other night I unlock it until I move it.
I understand. I'll work in a new thread, one that is clearer and better organized. I'll copy what I need from it for the updated version.
Is nobody gonna put my well established theory that LC fixed itself, and is in fact, Demon reach?
I'd like to nominate my theory thread Has Mab become something more? (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,37254.msg1810937.html#msg1810937). It's over 14 pages long so I think that gives it a bit of credibility.
I actually think some more conversation could be gained from it (I'd like to respond to one poster in particular too). Sadly it is locked. Priscellie suggested copying the best parts and making a new thread but 14 pages is a bit much. I know that threads are automatically locked and purged after a certain amount of time as not to overtax the server but could it be unlocked if it gets into the Reference Collection?
Can I get a 2nd for this topic?
http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,35012.0.html
(a lot of it might be echoed by or be an echo of other theory topics already archived, but this one seems to have been written rather soon after the CD release, and is rather extensive)
in addition to the topic The Count just pointed out, I'll need to xfer this other topic of his (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,38032.msg1864232.html#msg1864232) soon
Also his topic Tehom/The primordial darkness before the light=Outsiders (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,38033.0.html)
I also want to keep tabs on this reference heavy theoryish topic I generated this week about Magic sticking to Outsiders (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,39153.0.html)
Come on guys, if you know of great references that should be archived let us know :)
Ok, if nothing else, the unlock should make it easier to pull the code from the old post.
If you didn't notice from my reply containing a reposting from my 2011 topic, this happens to be a subject I find important :)
I really enjoyed the discussions in this topic
http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,38493.45.html
But I'd like some 2nds before I transfer it to the DFRC since it's my own and it wasn't just a reference
Edit: Hmmm, it does end up becoming a Serack typical list, this time about different "Dimensions" or "Planes" that might be involved with the NN.
Truthfully, I'm on the fence about this one. Certainly it has some interesting theorizing about the topology of the NN, but I don't get a strong enough feeling that this really is something people will want to go back to.
My own suggestion here would be to re-format it (or re-open the discussion) once Skin Games comes out -- (note that the thread only expires in July, way after the book will be out). I have a suspicion that SK may reveal certain insights into NN travel that might be useful to the discussion.
...Then again, by then "some" of us might be privileged with certain tidbits from the next book (Mirror Mirror if I'm not mistaken), which might really prevent certain individuals from presenting their theories.
Oh, I still would like this (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,39512.0.html) fleshed out. I think the Quacker needs to be consulted.
I'm considering splicing http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,40471.30.html
to one of these two topics.
http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,35014.0.html

(when the time comes)
Mysteries, Mistakes & Retcon thread?
I mean, there's a whole ton of unanswered things out there that need resolution. So many that I'm not sure Butcher will remember to answer them all. (Although for the first few cases its mostly about what Nemesis's goals were, and if it was an N-fected operative, or just an patsy agent of Nemesis.
There have been a few errors and/or retcons the series has made too. Such as Bianca's assistant's name. Mort living in a home he apparently vacated, in Ghost Story. And the recent change where the Denarians hired the Church Mice & not Marcone.
Do I count? ;)
And after some thought, I'd like to have a bit more input.Makes sense to me, seemed like a bit of a conflict of interest for me to nominate my own theory :)
Note to self and other curators:
http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,43724.msg2113241.html#msg2113241
Lez see if archival of some of these is prudent.
We are coming up on the theory buildup before and after the Skin Game release and need to make sure some of the topics of that time that aren't archived get archived.
We need to preserve at least one of the old topics about the SG relics possible uses.Id vote this one, as a recent incarnation:
Just noticed that Prove Guilty Mysteries (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,43840.0.html) isn't in here. Been going through my Emporium to make sure all the links got migrated.
(Sidenote-- Serack, I did think of an answer to your Two Mantles Problem with regard to the Time Travel Harry theory, you know besides my Unstuck Harry theory. In The Flash, the Speedforce can only be claimed by one speedster per universe. We see this with Jay Garrick this season on the show, which reminded me of that arcana. The Mantles might work the same way: with Lloyd Slate holding the Mantle, Future Harry will have to do without.)
Also missing is The Starborn Conspiracy (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,44599.msg2137618.html), and The Lady and the Knight, which is lost forever. That latter was post about Venus, Adonis, and the Goddess's Champion.
Could you also please unlock my Emporium so I can archive my Thor=Vaderrung and Faith=Free Will Gifting posts somewhere they won't eventually be eaten?
Maybe I'm missing it, but I think a WAG topic where everyone can list a summary of their WAG's would be good. Everyone would only post one reply to the thread, and update it when they come up with new WAG's. No-one would reply or debate the WAG's themselves in the thread; it's only an archive.
Then we can link to our own reply in our signatures so that others could review our thoughts if they like. And the thread could be locked to preserve them. And with one reply per member, it'll force everyone to keep their theirs succinct. If more detail is required, or debate is required, a new thread can be created.
From a backend standpoint, would it be possible (and easy to implement) to have a thread that automatically restricted each member to a single post, in the same way it can restrict each member to a single vote in a poll? That would significantly reduce the maintenance required, as well as auto-enforce the whole "Do Not Debate Here" mandate.
Best bet is to do it as an Honor System, which has worked for me in the past on other forums but only with small groups. The biggest problem comes when you have someone who has a Ton Load of WAGs, so they don't all fit on one post. Then, you have Members needing multiple pages at odd times.....ultimately ending up no different than a normal thread.
My real suggestion, create a Thread in Spoilers, then have someone curate and consolidate the end results...which, actually, is kinda what we have already.
If such an option exists, it does not seem to be available to the curator level of moderation. I suspect it doesn't exist, and from what I have seen of the admin's paradigm for forum modification it wouldn't be added.Ya, it definitely doesnt appear implemented currently (Id expect it int he New Thread options) and would need some amount of Fred-Time to get going, if not a pre-packaged plugin of some kind.
Okay, I started one here (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,46582.msg2196858.html#msg2196858).Good idea in theory, but I fear it would run into complications when you try to classify each theory into those broad categories when they apply to multiple ones. It's the age old Dewy Decimal conundrum
As I mentioned in the thread, it's just to compile the basic list of WAG's people prescribe to. As I was creating it, I realized a thread for each major WAG topic might be the solution to long-term storage of theories.
For example, a thread could be created for Proven Guilty Time Travel theories. Rather than saving a thread with one theory and all of the debate around it, each poster could just post one reply with their own theory, and then link that post to the compilation. No-one discusses each other's theories in that thread.
That way, if a new member wants to see what theories exist around a particular topic, they can read the one thread, rather than reading a dozen. And as people refine their theory, they can edit the one post.
Good idea in theory, but I fear it would run into complications when you try to classify each theory into those broad categories when they apply to multiple ones. It's the age old Dewy Decimal conundrumFor the most part, yeah. Especially when some people interlink everything. The challenge would be to have people focus on a particular aspect of their theory. It wouldn't work for every theory, but the big ones (pgtt, origins of the Fae, the Black Council, origin of magic, etc) could be focused.
No new thread needed with post after post of us old folks rehashing our own stuff. While I agree in theory, and indeed have before just posted a link to an older topic on PG craziness... for obvious reasons. but sometimes its the rehashing that gets a new convert to understand your meaning better too.
So far I haven't been able to come up with a Thread worthy of being included in the Reference section. If you don't mind me asking, what am I doing wrong? How is a Thread judged good enough to be saved in the Reference Section?
whatever happened to our other triggermen from back in the day? Elegast, tcf being promenant in my head.. as a frequent poster and someone who has nominated a few threads myself, i think what the average poster wants is feedback if we do nominate something. a no with a reason is ok, and just a no is acceptable really. its the not hearing anything in reply that gets you the pm, for some feedback... remember, perceived dislike is preferred to perceived apathy.(sorry for the phone typing)
For your consideration (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,43287.0.html)
