DF Reference Collection / Re: [CD spoilers] Cowl = Simon reference thread
« on: January 10, 2013, 06:56:48 AM »
I'm not going to go any further into the details of the, is he/isn't he debate.  It makes some sense that Cowl is a wizard with SC ability but there is nothing to really nail it down, at least not for me.

Do most of you who think Cowl=Simon also think Elaine=Kumori?  I can buy the later more than the former.  My question to those who believe both equations are true.  Has anyone put together a WAG why Elaine would hook up with the man whose apprentice enthralled her when she was a teenager?  Granted we don't have much information about Elaine after she ran away from Justin's burning house and we really know even less about Simon, but I'm hoping someone has tried to think how it might have worked.

That raises an interesting point.  Has Jim said anything about when we might see Elaine again?  It's hard to get any more clues with her out of the picture for so long.  She was in the fourth and the ninth book. (Maybe in the seventh book too.)  I think she is overdue for an appearance.

I thought a Golem might be a tough character for Harry to deal with, not being alive and without the weaknesses of human zombies, but a friend has told me that Terry Pratchett has already used more than one Golem in his books.  Jim could still use one, but have to do so in a different way.

into the genre? we allready have Bianca, Lara, and Lea...

Other than Lara devouring Madeline; which was more cannibalistic than anything else, is there proof she swings both ways?  Did I miss a inference or innuendo in one of the books?

Thinking about Carmilla again.  If; and I know its a big if, Jim wanted to bring lesbian vampires into the story, there is no reason he would have to limit himself to characters from literature.  I think Fran and Miriam from Vampyres AKA Daughters of Dracula (1974) would be great choices.

(If you rent this don't watch it with your kids, it borders on soft core porn.  However, it is a real horror film with some really messed up scenes in it.  Great to watch in the dark.)

not so much as hot, but more..cute by modern standards.

short, brown hair, lesbain, obsessive about her love interests, capable of walking in daylight, can pass for human, change her shape..

I was thinking of Yutte Stensgaard as Carmilla in Lust for a Vampire (1971).  I guess I have learned more of my mythology from Hammer movies and the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show than school.

Well, to be honest, at Bianca's party Mavra is being described as sexy, only when harry uses his Sight he can see the corpselike appearance of her (and not that easy even). So, she does amintain a vanity illusion to look pretty. Though this might just apply as well...

I also expect to meet Oberon (if he isn't the Erlking) as a counter to Kringle and I expect to see the other 3 archangels turn up in the books.

Are you sure about that, because I think you are confusing the description of Bianca with Mavra?  Mavra was wearing a Hamlet outfit; generally not terribly sexy on a woman, except maybe Greta Garbo in similar type outfit in Queen Christina.  Mavra (actually her double) was wearing the same thing in Blood Rites and she didn't look hot then.  Even if Harry hadn't seen her with his sight, the visible Mavra was not attractive in any way I can think of.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Jim has said that Oberon is dead.  He was involved in a romantic? triangle with Titania and Mab and it didn't end well for him.  I don't think this is in a WoJ.  I think you have to watch his most recent Q&A's on YouTube to see that comment.

Carmilla. of course, im quazy enough to think shes allready shown up

 ;)

Do you think Mavra is Carmilla, because I always though Carmilla was well, Hot?  That's something that Mavra is definitely not.  Not even in a Nightmare before Christmas or Cemetery Man sort of way.

Here's a question I hope someone would ask; probably sometime in 2014, when the next book is released.

You have stated that you want Harry's love life to grow organically, not be mapped out as most major plot points have been.  Even though you can't (or won't) give us any details, can you as the writer now see how it is going to play out.  Can you now say to yourself, "Yes, I know who Harry is going to end up with?"

A direct answer to that question would tell me if Jim now has a solid plan or understanding of where Harry's love life needs to go, or if we are likely to see a lot more pointless start and stop, I want to but I can't commit because I'm not ready, because your not ready, because the moon is out of phase, whatever, nonsense.

Twice in earlier books; in Storm Front and Proven guilty, Harry has talked about unleashing an attack based on animals or insects.  He thought of sending a flood of rats into the Varsity Club when he confronted Marcone in Storm Front and in Proven Guilty he joked with Karrin that he'd like to send a torrent of cockroaches in City Hall and watch "the suits" come running out of the building.

Will Harry ever use such an attack?  Would he be summoning actual rats and roaches or would they be something from the never-never that just looked like the real thing? If he has had this ability since SF why hasn't he used it yet?

It is possible there was more than one motive each time the use of black magic was encouraged.  In SF there was the exploding heart curse, which seemed to be small version of the bloodline curse in Changes.  The purpose of the three-eye drug is a bit of a mystery, unless it was just a way to give Victor Sells more money.

The Hexen Wolf belts were given to FBI agents who had a strong desire to take out Johnny Marcone.  Why Marcone would be a target of the wizard handing out the belts is a mystery.  Maybe he was only a secondary target at that point.

Empowering Kravos and helping him turn himself in "The Nightmare" seemed aimed solely at Harry Dresden.  Yes, the ghost Kravos was gunning for everyone who helped take him down, but Harry was the individual who had gummed up the works in the first two books.  However, I suppose the idea of weakening the boundaries between the mortal world and the spirit world which we saw in GP may be related to the use of the darkhallow ritual in DB.  Specifically, perhaps weakening the boundaries to help Kravos cross over to get his revenge was a way of testing the kind of work Cowl did in DB to prepare for the darkhallow ritual.

I know I need to reread the book, but if the headaches started before Harry pick up the coin, maybe Lash isn't what is going to kill him, maybe its something else.

true. that she showed up at all considering she existed only in now burnt out parts of harry's mind does make it hard for her to exist elsewhere.

Seeing that the ice pick like pains are first mentioned in SmF, I wonder if when Mab messed with Harry's memory she also began the process of healing Harry's brain damage.  I had assumed that occurred when Mab healed his back injury, but if she began the process in SmF that is when Lash started to return, assuming that regrowing the burned out areas of his mind where Lash resided would also bring Lash back. Perhaps its a minor point, but it might have greater significance.

So it is highly likely Mother Winter's lost walking stick is now known as the Blackstaff.  So what would Harry do if Eb were to die (In battle or murdered) and Harry picked up the staff.  Would he accept the post of the new Blackstaff; assuming it was offered to him, or would he return Mother Winter's walking stick to her?

With the first option Harry gets to break all the laws of magic and do everything he despises without going insane.  The second option puts the staff back in the hands of a being that thinks that Mab is too soft.
