Title: Striking Red Court Vampires
Post by: infusco on February 07, 2011, 09:43:16 PM
Hi guys,

Quick question. Our World states that
(click to show/hide)

How would you mechanically run this? I'm a bit stumped.

Blocked the text as it might be considered a spoiler.

Someone would need to use a maneuver to place an appropriate aspect.  Something like the "In My Sights" example they always use for Guns, except that it would be "Targeting the Belly" and could apply equally to Fists, Weapons, or Guns attacks.  As usual the first invoke is a free tag, and after that you keep paying Fate points.  Also as usual, the vampire can try a roll to remove the Aspect from itself.

Also, that's a spoiler?  Really?

You could probably get away with this without using a manouvre just lower their skill bonus by -1 or -2 (as it is easier to defend if you know where the enemy is attacking.)

But why wouldn't this be a declaration or maneuver on the vamp's part to get an aspect like "I know he knows my weaknesses" or something that it could tag to aid their defense roll?

I see no reason why you can't spend your turn attacking were ether you like on your opponents body but to hit certain parts of the body are harder than others so i think the difficult should show that. Though a Red Court vampire could also do a manouvre or in my opinion do a tag of red court vampire aspect to help defend.

OW also suggests getting Spin could be enough to fulfill striking the abdomen.

I rule it as a manever to create an Aspect when done intentionally. I also let Spin cause the abdomen to be hit.

I'm a bit confused by the latter two comments. I'm reading the optional rules for Spin on YS214, the same as previous Fate books, that describe gaining Spin from defensive actions. Where are the offensive Spin rules?

Spin is optional it is when you get more the oponent whilst defending by +3 or more in other fates it gave a +1 bonus.

I'd allow it with a maneuver, or by spending a fate point to invoke their Red Court Vampire aspect for effect.

Yep, I'd forgotten that one too. Tagging an Aspect is of course a good way to go about it.

It's a Catch.  It ignores Toughness and Recovery powers and can cause Compels against their High Concept.

Mechanically, though, it would need to have some kind of way to represent increased difficulty in striking the abdomen, otherwise Red Court vampires may as well not have any Toughness or Recovery powers because everyone would just attack them there all the time.

That's... how a Catch works... not everyone knows to do that. The abdomen is not a particularly difficult target - it's almost a center-of-mass target - but average Joe doesn't have a clue that hitting the abdomen does this. And in the case of the Black Court, if your vulnerabilities get published, the Catch Bonus gets higher to reflect the increased common knowledge.

I would say the best way to do this is to treat it as a Called Shot or Painting a Target(YS209). You place an aspect on the vampire representing attacking the abdomen and then you just tag it to hit the vamp in its weak spot ;)
And in case of a Called shot the vamp can remove the aspect with an Endurance roll( or some other skill).

Called Shot is easiest.  You say "I'm cutting his tummy", do the maneuver and it gains "stomach cut open" which you can invoke for effect to make them stay out of the fight.  Now, the GM sets the difficulty here, so against a really skilled RCV this might not be remotely practical to do.  Should work great for goons though, as least if your attack abilities are high enough.
