Author Craft / Critque
« on: August 20, 2009, 03:10:27 PM »
I have a couple of questions about critques.
1) How long do you wait in your projects before you let someone critque it? (ie. first draft, second draft, when I'm satisfied)

2) Do you use a critque checklist? If so, how did you develope it?

I am about 3/4 of the way through the first draft of my current novel. My usual reader has asked when I am going to let her read it.
I haven't decided yet. But it got me wondering what the rest of you do.

Author Craft / Story approach
« on: April 20, 2009, 01:10:53 PM »
When you write, which of these approaches do you favor?

1. MC discovers their power unexpectedly (“You’re a wizard, Harry”)

2. MC has already established and something happens (“I heard the mailman approach my office door, half an hour earlier than usual.”)

I tend to like to read both, but I find the first is more difficult for me to write. (not worse, but not as much to work with and you have to be more clever and creative to make it believable)

Author Craft / Formating question
« on: March 02, 2007, 06:52:49 PM »
When you are writing your rough draft, do you use something like MS Word? and if so, do you have a favorite way of formatting the draft? (single space vs double space, 12pt vs 10pt vs 14pt, etc)

I generally use 12pt font, with double space between paragraphs, but single space otherwise. I know that eventually I will need to go back an format for submission, but right now, it's what's comfortable for me.

What do you guys do?

Author Craft / Problem with passive verbs
« on: February 26, 2007, 10:23:17 PM »
Hey all,
I have always had an issue with writing passive verbs, especially when I write past tense.
So, does anyone else have this problem?
What are some techniques to overcome this?

thanks

Author Craft / rewrites
« on: February 12, 2007, 05:16:52 PM »
Question:
When you are writing and you realize (through review or epiphany) that your early chapters need a serious rewrite. Do you forge ahead with what you have to keep momentum, or do you go back an rewrite under the belief that it will help in the save time in the long run?

Have you ever lost momentum on the whole project because of going back to rewrite early portions?

Author Craft / Writing every day
« on: January 02, 2007, 09:14:50 PM »
all,
couple of quick questions:
1) How much do you write each day on your current project?
Someone told me recently that on days that I write less than a thousand words that I shouldn't have bothered.  I try to write everyday, but with two young children (3 yrs and 5 months) I don't always get to spend as much time as I would like.

2) do you consider work on your plotting (outline/notes/whatever) as part of your writing for the day?

To me, when you quantify your writing (ie, you must write 1500 words / day) then you stifle creativity by trying to force something that will, in all likelyhood, be edited out later anyway.
thoughts?

Author Craft / SEQUELS - from the livejournal
« on: July 24, 2006, 05:45:20 PM »
Jim -  in the livejournal, you mentioned sequels and stated that they "are an indispensable portion of your story and will have their own article later."

I was hoping for some clarification on sequels.  I tried to look up the term, but it just lead to the Rocky IV kind of definition.

And since I know that Jim is a busy man, if anyone else has some insight to this term, I would greatly appreciate it.

Author Craft / On-line writers groups
« on: June 26, 2006, 01:12:01 PM »
Hey all,
I have been writing for most of my life. I have never been part of a writers group, on-line or otherwise.  I started looking around for one in my area (Oklahoma City), but most of the ones I found are for Romance or some other genre.

Here's my questions:
How many of you belong to on-line writers groups?
Are they as useful as in-person writers groups?
Are there any that you would recommend for an unpublished aspiring writer?

thanks in advance for the info.
