DF Spoilers / Re: How long did Thomas know?
« on: August 16, 2021, 02:19:56 PM »
We agree that Nemesis wanted inside Demonreach once it was clear that Thomas was there, but it's a big leap from sending Thomas on an assassination to getting inside the island's defenses.  It wasn't a given that Thomas would end up there, and Nemesis gave up a well placed agent on the off chance to have the opportunity.  It makes it seem like there may have been another goal in mind before the Demonreach gambit presented itself.  Tying up Harry's time is plausible like Harry mentioned, but to what end?

I don't think it's a given that Thomas would end up a prisoner inside Demonreach, but I think it's a near certainty that Thomas would given sanctuary on the island itself -- even if Thomas had not been captured by the Svartelves.

Harry and Lara have access to exactly one place that they could stash someone, in perpetuity, and be assured that the Svartelves couldn't grab him.

They went from glaring at Harry on sight to lying to help him corner Marcone at the meeting so I'd say that Harry cleared that up offscreen.

Or, perhaps they are terrified of Harry given what he did to Ethniu.

I mean he told his brother Justine was pregnant.  Why would any brother see that as a clue?

Not at the time, obviously.  But, afterwards Harry would be expected -- master detective that he is -- to try and make sense of Thomas' actions.  Thomas wouldn't randomly attack the Svartelves, Lara didn't put him up to it, the search for another motive should have led him to realize the pregnancy was leverage.

I don't think so.  Thomas has a brother who is a powerful wizard that is also a Starborn and might be able to "do something."  Between Harry and Thomas himself, they might be able to ambush and restrain Justine and get it out of her.

My guess is that Justine waited until she was pregnant to force Thomas to attempt the Svartelf hit.

The pregnancy gives Justine tremendous leverage over Thomas that she would not otherwise have, even as Thomas' lover.  Nemesis cares nothing for humans, let alone an unborn human.  Thomas on the other hand would absolutely die for his child.  Justine could easily threaten the baby as a way of controlling Thomas.

Since Justine isn't even showing yet, she probably revealed it only very, very recently.  Let's say she staged a drama with a pregnancy test and a follow-up with an early ultrasound.  According to the interwebz, you can diagnose a pregnancy as early as 30 days post-fertilization and a woman will start to show as early as 12 weeks.

Therefore, Thomas probably has known for less than a month or so.

A bit more speculation -- Nemesis' orders to Thomas required the hit AND required Thomas not to tip off Harry (or anyone else).  Thomas does not tip off Harry, directly.  Instead, he makes sure to tell Harry about the pregnancy before he does the hit.

This, I think in retrospect, was supposed to be a clue for Harry.  Harry was supposed to realize that someone used the baby as leverage, and so Harry was supposed to then figure out who knew that Justine was pregnant.  This is a small pool of people that probably only included Lara and Justine.  Lara can be immediately ruled out because of all the trouble this has caused the White Court, leaving us with ... Justine as the only suspect.  As Holmes says, "Once you've ruled out the impossible then whatever is left, however improbable, must be the truth."

Always interesting at the Dresden forums....

Bible study time!  Here is some Bible background on Antichrist.  There are actually two Greek words (the original Gospels were in Greek) used in the New Testament that in English get turned into "antichrist" -- pseduochristos and antichristos.

First, "antichristos" is really just those who deny Jesus.  These people are literally everywhere from Atheists on down to Muslims (whose doctrine denies the divinity of Jesus).  Not great from a Christian perspective, but hardly harbingers of DOOOM!:

Quote
John 1:7: "For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist."

John 2:18: "Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour."

John 2:22: "Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son."

John 4:3: "and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world."

Second, the word "pseudochristos" is the false messiahs.  These people are much more rare and, arguably, much more dangerous:

Quote
Mathew 24:24: "For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect."

Mark 13:22: "for false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show signs and wonders, in order to lead astray, if possible, the elect."

Note, however, these fake messiahs can produce signs and wonders -- i.e., do magic.  Building from this idea you get the Psuedochristos' final form -- the "Man of Sin" -- or transliterated from the Greek: "ho anthropos tes hamartias"

Quote
2 Thessalonians 2:2-4: "not to be easily disconcerted or alarmed by any spirit or message or letter seeming to be from us, alleging that the Day of the Lord has already come. 3Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness— the son of destruction— is revealed. 4He will oppose and exalt himself above every so-called god or object of worship. So he will seat himself in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.…"

So this isn't just a pseudochristos, but THE Pseudochristos.  The Man of Sin is a rebel and a destroyer, an agent of chaos whose hubris and arrogance sets himself above God.  That's what Harry is telling us he could end up being.  And, given the amount of personal power at his disposal .... not an unrealizable goal.

DF Spoilers / Re: Has Justine Been Faking It All Along?
« on: August 14, 2021, 10:18:04 PM »
Our facts:

(1)  We know that Justine and Thomas shared true love at end of Blood Rites (or shortly thereafter).
(2)  Justine's hair was able to burn Madeline Raith at Club Zero during Turn Coat and she had to wear a rubber suit (yow!) to interact with Thomas.
(3)  At the conclusion of Ghost Story, Justine breaks Thomas' hunger strike with a clever plan.  Harry and Uriel witness Justine's explanation of this plan.  Uriel is amused at Harry's discomfort but makes no mention of any ... issue with Justine.

** Nemesis Infection Occurs **

(4)  Justine is brought inside of Demonreach's defenses during Cold Days, just before Nemfected Maeve brags to Mab that killing her might give the Mantle to some ally of Maeve/Nemesis.
(5)  Justine becomes pregnant at some point just before Peace Talks.  This gives Justine the insurance she needs to manipulate Thomas into doing her bidding.
(6)  Justine reveals that she is Nemfected and had planned to trick Harry into passing her through Demonreach's defenses to "visit" Thomas.

My Assumptions:
(1)  A controlled, Nem-fected person cannot exhibit the "true love" necessary to shield that person from a Raith.
(2)  It would be odd for Uriel not to mention an issue with Justine; it seems impossible that Uriel would not notice the presence of Nemesis.  Seriously, if Uriel can't do this -- and he is just one tier down from TWG -- there is no way that Rashid can.  This event also occurred after Harry DEMANDED and Uriel agreed to give Harry enough information to make a fully informed decision as to whether to "go back."

Conclusions:
(1)  Justine was not infected until right after Ghost Story.  It may be that breaking her "true love" protection that gave Nemesis a way in.

Justine would always have been a person of interest to Nemesis.  She is essentially a "Privy Secretary" to the White Queen and is good friends with the Warden of Demonreach.  In religious circles it is believed that being insane, doing drugs and playing with the occult create opportunities for possession.  I think it's even mentioned in Small Favor.  Justine kind of did all three of those things -- she's mentally ill; tried to control it with drugs (legal and illegal); hangs out with vampires and wizards and worse.

(2)  Justine was already infected during Cold Days.  Apparently, one aim of Nemesis is to get behind the defenses of Demonreach.  Now that Harry has learned how to make the defenses more "active," she has to trick Harry into doing so.  I don't believe that the Spirit of the Island can act against a guest of Harry.  However, during Cold Days its possible that she could have exploited Maeve's and Lilly's death ... had Molly not been present to intercept the Lady's mantle.

If I were a Studio executive, I'd make Dead Beat the first of my Harry Dresden movies.  It is definitely my favorite of the early-Dresden books.

It has a lot of the world building already mapped out, but has plenty of surprises left to reveal.  The ability to reference lots of previous events, people, etc. just make the Dresden-verse more 3D.  Think of the references to the clone wars in the original Star Wars, the references to the old Republic, etc. it just made it seem like a real world.  (This is one of the inevitable and unavoidable issues with the prequel trilogy).

DF Spoilers / Re: Mab's word play about the White Court
« on: August 08, 2021, 10:27:58 PM »
Mab does few things for one reason.  The marriage drives the White Council further away from him (hence closer to Mab), offers Harry protection he just lost, and somewhat wriggles out of a favor from Lara while putting a handle on her.  All at once.

This is right.  And, I might add, also teaches Molly a lesson that she needs to learn.

Oh, I do agree that Lara seemed shocked to be gifted Harry. But she has mentioned a few times to Harry she could use a partner she respects (not loves) and she has wondered what it would be like to "throw down" with Harry, I think she called it. And Molly may be afraid if they have to be together and act a couple.. they may BECOME one.

I think it's an interesting question whether Lara respects, fears or might actually have a thing for Harry.  I'm not sure that Lara is capable of love -- it is, of course, difficult to love one's food and real love is an anathema to the White Court.  Lara might be capable of affection, she certainly has some f-ed up motherly/sisterly affection for Thomas.  She might be able to have affection for Harry.  (Desire of course, is easy for Lara).

Personally, I think Lara might actually have a thing for Harry.  Harry is not quite the white-knighting bumbling nerd-avatar that he once was.  I think he might start resembling Id-Harry more and more often, and Id-Harry is definitely someone Lara would want to hang out with.

Yea, I think Murphy had a "rank" in Molly's mind, and she knew she was good for Harry too. Lara has neither thing going for her in Molly's view though. She's an interloper who could steal Harry away for the rest of his expected existence.
Had considered this, it was for "mutual benefit" after all, Mab doesn't need the WCVs for herself, but they'd certainly help fortify Harry's position.
* Although... Mab has a habit of putting Harry in tight spaces with things she believes could be comprised too..

I agree.  Murphy definitely had "rank" on Molly here.  If they were guys, I'd say this was a form of "Bros before Hos."  Molly would never move on Harry unless Murphy was out of the picture for good.  The fact that she died defending Harry makes this harder, but Molly at least has the benefit of knowing that she will not be Harry's rebound girl.  In this way, Mab may have done Molly a solid, in the end.

Of course, she'll have to work around the Winter Lady thing, but there is one obvious solution to that problem.... removing Mab.  Molly knows how to do it -- everyone on Demonreach the day that Lilly and Maeve died can work it out.

DF Spoilers / Re: Summoning TWG WAG

Strictly speaking God isn't "everything" -- that would be Pantheism of a sort.  God is omnipresent, meaning he's everywhere.

Because of his omnipresence, summoning God is pointless.  You summon a being from where it is to where you are.  Being everywhere at once means that God is already there.

DF Spoilers / Re: Could Harry become a signatory to the Accords?
« on: August 07, 2021, 04:06:34 AM »
Just my opinion but the 7 laws aren't related to the 7 Members.  I think the 7 members are because the number 7 is significant in some beliefs.

I think it may have been 7 Senior Council members, one with some kind of role for each law.  But for the life of me, I can't really see how it fits together.

The Gatekeeper's role and connection to a law seems obvious, but what is the law connected to "The Warden"?  It can't be just black magic -- only one (arguably two, now) prisoner even qualifies as human.  Black magic is only a human relevant concept.

In any event, I doubt that it's actually worked out that way for maybe a millennium even if there was once a linkage.   The Council just doesn't function as intended and does not seem to be fit for purpose anymore.

I mean, Kemmler apparently had Harry's job as The Warden once upon a time.  How much more evidence do we need that the Council is completely FUBAR.

I actually did like Jordan's multiverse where if the Dark One won anywhere, he won everywhere.  That preserved the stakes -- even escalated them -- rather than drain them.  If Jim did something like that, I'd probably enjoy it.  If the Outsiders break into reality in any reality, then all versions reality is screwed.

I think that he could, he could already get two Accords members to vouch for him -- potentially more.  I think River Shoulders said they would join the Accords.

(Note: I don't think that Mab would sign for him, it would restrict her Knight too much).

Overall, I think this is an excellent idea and "Wizard of Chicago" has the quality of a title to it.

Do you know what happens with quantum entanglement, or how quantum encryption works- or are you familiar with the Born interpretation of the Schrodinger equation.

Multiverse is a decent theoretical explanation for why matter demonstrates waveform superposition distributions and interference/coupling patterns.

Disclaimer:  I'm an aerospace engineer that crossed trained as a lawyer.  So you seem about to get into the weeds past where I'm competent to trade blows with you.

That being said...

I am familiar with quantum entanglement and quantum encryption.  I have clients whose technology relies on quantum entanglement to create quasi-particles (like polaritons) that are then used in various applications ranging from quantum encryption and quantum computing to more exotic uses.  To assist their work, I have to half-way understand this stuff, although I was warned that only a dozen people on the planet actually "understand."

I'm obviously familiar with the Schrodinger's equation, but I had to look up the Born interpretation. (Always good to learn something new).

As for a theoretical explanation for why matter demonstrates waveform superposition distributions, etc., I'm aware that this is one of the postulated explanation for not really explicable collapse of wave functions.

This explanation has always dissatisfied me.  The uncertainty principle and the measurement problem are uncomfortable, but it seems un-parsimonious to postulate an infinite set of universes with all of their associated mass and energy just to cover up the fact that we can't know where an electron is and where it's going at the same time.

My understanding is that while the Schrodinger equation is linear, wave collapse is not and so you just go round and round and round arguing about the probability function relating to the branch where we exist and the probability function of the particle to be observed.

Worse, the attempts to use this concept to come up with a measurable observation (typically, trying to show the cosmological constant is a result of multiple universes) have failed.

Smarter people than me, such as Sabine Hossenfelder, have explained why the multiverse/multiple worlds hypothesis is not science.

Bringing this back around to my original post, the metaphysical impact that the multiverse/many worlds idea was intended to avoid is simply the fact of a cosmic beginning.
