DFRPG / Re: Vampires and Werewolves and . . . Aliens?!?
« on: January 07, 2011, 04:41:34 AM »
It's this thing you said here that made me able to reconcile aliens, magic, and an astronomical nevernever.  All I had to do was the following:

1.  Call the NeverNever "The Warp".
2.  Rename Fae to Eldar.
3 (optional, but awesome). Add boltguns.  :)
Thank you! ;D

And I repeat: Perils of the Warp. :x

Sure you can. It just involves playing a little fast and loose in the name of Fun.

Knowledge from Nowhere = Leap of Logic. Maybe bump your conviction so high that it warps reality a little bit to make sure you make the right call.

Power from Nowhere = Unconscious Wizardry (Harry drawing power from the area around him), Unknowing Use of Sponsored Magic (Higher power decides to root for the underdog with or without belief; Sanya and Harry both arguably qualify in their own ways), Absolute Cosmic Bugfrack Coincidence (Exactly what it says on the tin).

If you absolutely need to have White God/Whoever Else involved somehow to sleep at night, just make it a Sanya case where the believer doesn't necessarily believe in/accept the source of his/her power.

There's an NPC in a setting I'm working on who outright weaponized Hollywood Atheism. He was a Soviet soldier in Afghanistan who, upon being confronted by a djinn that took out his unit, went so far off the deep end of belief and unbelief that it turned a bayonet knife into a bona fide weapon of faith. He killed the djinn in short order. The only thing he has left is faith in himself, and something broke down inside of him such that said self-faith has turned into a higher concept comparable to a personal deity. He's somewhere between nihilism, atheism, and narcissism (or whatever it is when you believe in yourself over everything else in the universe), and his mere presence can be like kryptonite to some supernaturals.

Don't root for the guy though. He's a sex-trafficking Russian mobster in league with two houses in the White Court, among other things.

That said: The RPG book only seems to describe True Faith as coming from belief in something bigger than you are (although maybe not in those exact words). If someone had faith in the idea of atheism, to me that'd be fine.

DFRPG / Re: An aside Question "Iron Kingdoms Conversion"
« on: January 04, 2011, 07:50:10 AM »
It's been a while since I've read anything Iron Kingdoms and I'm still getting the hang of the DF system, but it seems like IK Wizards would basically convert as Thaumaturgy-oriented Focused Practitioners with a handful Rotes and a really hard time managing evocations (outside of manipulating Warjacks, maybe).

Could be wrong. That's just the main thing I remember about the IK system since I liked their approach to magic.

Could borrow a page out of Warhammer 40,000's playbook: Yes, it's an alien Wizard...but really, he/she/it is just a psychic tapping into powers from another dimension. With a better understanding of it than humans, such that magical spells and rituals are just crazy math equations or something.

Incidentally: Perils of the Warp.

;D

Aside from that: Babylon 5 has a nifty idea with organic technology, which has since shown up elsewhere (Star Trek and nBSG both borrowed the idea, among others). Maybe that could be a means of countering the Wizard techbane?

DFRPG / Re: Why is the white court catch worth +0?
« on: November 08, 2010, 05:59:51 AM »
+1 would be reasonable if it were something easily obtainable. But Tsunami has a point. You don't just make it.  It's the time part that reduces the value of it.

True Love *is* exceptionally rare. And it takes a good deal of time for the feelings required for it to actually develop. Not to mention, a certain amount of maturity is required for it. Those teenagers, yeah, that's not love. 99.9999% sure that it's not, despite what said teenagers say/feel.  Though in a few years it *might* be.

Because it can take *years* to develop the connection that would be counted as true love, and that it takes a relationship to build up to it, The Catch is +0.  If you're character starts a session completely single, (s)he is not going to fall deeply in love with another character and that said character isn't going to fall deeply in love with the PC. Not immediately. Love at first sight? That's called Lust at first sight. I wouldn't say it's unobtainable, but its certainly not easily obtainable.

As for the other clans of the White Court: Hope and Faith. I'd say those are even more exceptionally rare than Love.
I'd argue the opposite. Hope is probably the most abundant thing on the planet. Without hope, plenty of people would lose any and all will just to open their eyes each morning. Faith is entirely arguable but it's definately in between Hope and Love in terms of abundance.

Guys I was hoping to stat up Gandhi as warmongering count of the Red Court. Help plz?
The Butthurt is strong with this one. :D

That said: Couldn't be too hard. Red Court Gandhi could've easily gone the pacifistic route to try and damage the British Empire for his own reasons, then faked his death via assassination to spark the kind of chaotic environment in India that would be well-suited to a hunter of men.

Alternatively: Red Court Gandhi could've been trying to set up some kind of Epic Ritual of Doom that his assassin thwarted under some misinformed pretense.

I'd rate that as more scholarship than lore.

Quote
Name: Compton
Aspect: War In The Streets
Threat: There’s long been gang warfare in East/South-east LA. But only in the last 15 years has it really become truly serious – the gangs are now led by ghouls. They’ve found a home (or a purpose) in the gangs, and many ghouls see ‘gang related death’ as another way of saying ‘fast food’.
I am now picturing a gangsta-dressed ghoul rapping Straight Outta Compton while dual wielding AKs sideways.

And I love you for it.

I don't recall Kenshin ever using magic.  He was just really badass with a sword.  Give the character +5 with weapons, and some stunts to boost weapon use and you've got it.
Bit late and all, but Kenshin demonstrated at least a few clearly supernatural abilities in addition to his speed. His ultimate technique basically generated a vacuum effect to hold enemies in place for another hit (Air, probably), one of his techniques was a short-ranged shockwave/rockslide-type deal (Air, Spirit, or Earth), and he was clearly empathic (several instances of sensing killing intent and past traumas, even without having line-of-sight to his opponent or conversing with them). Kenshin also demonstrated bursts of what had to be Inhuman Speed at a minimum. Nevermind some of his feats of strength (cleaving a cement lamp post in half at the base for starters).

Might help to point out that the DF system does allow you to use other elemental setups. One of the characters in OW uses a Wood element, and Metal is fairly common as a standalone in asian elements.

Another fun point you may or may not find useful: Chi is both matter and energy. "Heavy Chi" constitutes any tangible element. "Light Chi" is the air, spirit, actual light and so on. This is where the notion of the Yin-Yang comes from. The Five Chinese Elements (Fire, Earth, Metal, Wood, Water) are all formed by varying combinations and balances of Chi.

And a random thought someone else can pick up on: Tai Chi forms as the components for thaumaturgy. No material bits needed beyond clothing, with the use of a weapon or pre-arranged ritual area being optional and convenient. You could use Qigong and Yoga forms as well, since Tai Chi ultimately derives from them both to some extent.

You could make swords with simular powers sure, however I wouldn't make them have the same purpose of the Swords of the Cross as they shouldn't be tied them the Denarians at all.  The nails of the cross and the 30 pieces of coins silver have significant ties to eachother and bringing something in from another faith.. no ... just ... no...
As has been pointed out already: All the Abrahamic religions are basically variations on the same thing in the DV. Agnostics, Muslims, and a Shinto-Baptist have been known to carry the Swords, so it's not impossible that other pieces of Godly Fun are lying around tied to the Swords and the Denarians.

Plus the Swords don't even stick to their own (declared) mission much of the time. It's not unreasonable for other artifacts to pop up that would have missions intersecting with them or running parallel.

If you want to make him a bit more Muslim call him Suleiman.
Might cause confusion though, as the name Suleiman is more associated with this guy in the West.

He's even got a statue or two in DC.

What about King Solomon's Ring as an Item of Power?  It would probably grant a lot of power over beings of the Nevernver.
That one always struck me as being more Judaic than the others.

Solomon was Merlin back before crusty blue celtic madmen knew what the word "bathing" meant. ;D

...why not combine Ghoul with True Believer?

Not like we haven't seen crazier things 'round these parts. She was just trying to walk the straight and narrow (within limits) and eventually fell off the bandwagon. ;D

DFRPG / Re: Vote Denarian 2010
« on: July 27, 2010, 06:10:34 PM »
Fun Fact: The Devil can quote scripture to suit his needs.

Funner Fact: Evangelical Christianity and pretty much any 'right wing' group is generally apocalyptic. I'm saying this as a Bible Belt native.

Funnest Fact of All: Technically speaking, the Antichrist will have no opposition en route to power.

Logical conclusion: Any 'right wing' Christians who are in the know and still support this guy are knowingly trying to speed along the Apocalypse. This kind of attitude/etc is not unheard of. Look at the crap Israel and the US/Canada had to put up with near the end of the 90's.

As a political science major, I completely approve of the Denarian Senator concept at every freaking level possible. Carry on. ;D

EDIT: And another thing? Devil You Know vs. Devils You Don't. The Church and its affiliates have demonstrated a measure of hostility towards the supernatural (see Warrior, among others). It could always be that the Denarian in question manages to fool them into thinking they have ownership of it or something, allowing it to come into power as a means of undermining the abominations rest of the supernatural community.
