Author Craft / Books with companion soundtracks
« on: June 04, 2009, 07:46:35 PM »
Last year this book came out (can't remember the name), something to do with a library and a bookshelf for the cover with a male silhouette at the bottom, and on iTunes it came out with a companion music soundtrack to the book.  Is this something new or are books getting the same treatment to movies with their soundtracks?  The idea came up when I was outlining my book last night.

Author Craft / Need feedback on my chapters
« on: May 16, 2009, 05:27:29 AM »
Hey there.  I have six chapters done for my first book and have it posted on a website I made.  I gave out the address, along with login information because I'm trying to keep it as private as possible, to my most trusted friends and writers and will expect some feedback next week.  If you guys are interested, send me a message and I will send you the login information.  All of your support goes towards finishing this to the best of my ability and create a story, and series, that I will be proud of.  I have a teaser site up so you can read the synopsis and first chapter:

Thank You!

Author Craft / Open discussion of my book's universe
« on: April 01, 2009, 03:33:48 PM »
If you don't know me, you might recall me writing a book for Nanowrimo.  As it turned out, I made the 50k marker and I'm now attempting to edit the book.  What I need is psychological elements to my story because it involves ideas of body transformations, magic, country-wide containment into concentration facilities, living in a new body, talking to your spirit guide for the first time ever (a little homage to His Dark Materials), and an event that even the entry galaxy will be aware of.

I made a seperate post on the website:

http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3015108

And a synopsis of the story:

http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/211036

I am asking for your opinion if you ever found yourself in this position, whether you are the first to transform after waking from an hour long coma, transform in two years, the last one to transform, or anywhere in between.  Your opinion on using magic is important because it also shapes the person you will have to be.  Please note that this is happening to everybody on the planet, including the secluded tribes of the third world and its a 4-year transformation. Be honest as possible and have fun!

What would you do if you had six hours of humanity left?

Author Craft / Comments on my short story series
« on: January 10, 2009, 04:45:11 AM »
I just started a short story series on Mibba.  If you like to read, the link is http://www.mibba.com/story/_83288/_117366/ and post a comment on this forum or on Mibba.  I'm very new to this and I want to know what I'm doing right, and wrong.

Author Craft / Podiobooks: A New Market?
« on: December 17, 2008, 07:19:37 AM »
I recently uncovered a group of podcasts on iTunes calling themselves "free audiobooks" or Podiobooks as they are nicknamed.  Do you think this is a new market to explore for freelance, amateur, pro, or hobby writers without the hassles of production or is this a bad place to get a story or book out in audio form?

I just downloaded Interview for a Wizard by J.A. Areces and Nocturnal by Scott Sigler (i think Nocturnal is out in print as well).  Give your thought on this and predict where this new form will take authors.

So, tonight I finished the draft outline.  Now I have to spend the next 30 days before Nov 1 to fix, tweak, add, and remove the plot points in each chapter.  Maybe add more chapters if I want to.  Do any of you have any pointers, advice, do/don't things on this process of editing the outline before I start screwing things up?

Author Craft / Novel Ideas
« on: July 18, 2008, 06:11:17 AM »
Okay. Nanowrimo is coming up in 4 months and I don't have an idea for a novel.  Any ideas where I can get some?  It sounds like a stupid question, but seriously, I have nothing.

Author Craft / Good Magic References
« on: May 02, 2008, 02:26:38 AM »
Okay.  I finished my notes and sketches of my proposed magical human race.  What I need is the magic part and I have no clue where to start.  I do have one magic reference book (grimwore to an apprentice wizard) but if anybody has any magic references for their stories that would be great.

Author Craft / Plot Helpers
« on: February 08, 2008, 06:20:15 AM »
I do have an idea for a book series, but I can't seem to think of any plot ideas.  Besides driving around in my car talking into my little voice recorder, is there anything else that will make me think of plot ideas?

Author Craft / Ideas for a story

Is there any books or something that has a collection of ideas for stories?  Just thought about it since I don't have any good ideas to start with.

Author Craft / Great, its Ruined!
« on: December 31, 2007, 05:50:56 AM »
Have you ever had one of those moments when planning/writing a novel that when you stumble on a book in the genre your writing in and has the exact, or somewhat, same information and/or concept(s) your writing about, without ever realizing it existed at all?

It happened to me and I wanted to strangle somebody.  I was moving through the fantasy section of my hometowns bookstore, finding something for some inspiration and ideas for my novel, when I found E.E. Knight's Way of the Wolf.  The cover was good, but the summary really made me pissed.  The same concept and the same evil alien race was the same thing as my reason (don't ask) and conclusion for my story.

Good thing it didn't have my top secret race of special humans.  I didn't buy the book.  So now I have to think up a whole new conclusion, evil alien race, and many more information to fill in.  Besides that, I am new to novel writing and I have a thought that you guys can help me with.  Should I keep my conclusion and idea as it is or re-think it if its similar to something else?

Author Craft / Who uses novel writing software?
« on: November 08, 2007, 05:48:28 AM »
Besides the usual popular word processors, like Apple's Pages and Microsoft Office's Word, are there any programs that help write novels?  I found one and thats Avenir.

Author Craft / Online Writing Clubs
« on: July 22, 2007, 05:26:35 AM »
Does anybody know of any online writing clubs?  It seems like a good idea for me.  I just need one to critique my stories so I can have a chance to publish one.

Author Craft / Story Research
« on: July 11, 2007, 04:33:30 PM »
Basiclly, I'm writing a story that incorperates magic and modern technology under one roof and I have a problem.  Even though I'm writing magic, I just don't have a dahm clue what it is.  I have two questions:

(1)  In stories today, like the Dresden files, does it involve research in a specific area of magic or just made up?

(2) How do I go about research on magic?
