Arianna's one word is more likely to be soething like 'don't' in Maya as Harry raises his right hand to finish her off (which is what he does).

If we had any evidence for Arianna knowing anything about transfer spells, for the RC spirit transferring too etc I'd go for it as an interesting theory.  But at present there's nothing I'm aware of to give it weight.

While something happened in the 2 minutes after the death curse on the Red Court took effect that Harry is blocking, I can't see any evidence for Arianna doing any sort of transfer.

The survival of the RC spirit at all is speculation on which we have no information; its transfer to Harry is even more speculative and, more to the point, we have no evidence for, merely an unknown two minutes.

While it is just possible the Eebs survived I wouldn't bet money on it.  Ignoring the effects of the death curse before Harry and Susan left the Erlking's hall (Changes p315-6):

"Screams went up from the entire helpless Red Court crew as several hundred violence-amped goblins fell on them in a wave.  I watched for a moment in sickened fascination, but turned away.  ...  Beneath the screams of the Red Court - Esmerelda's were especially piercing - a ragged chuckle ran through the hall."

On the other hand before the fight the Erlking did imply that the defeated participants would amuse his people while they lasted. (p302).

CD Book Club / Re: Cold Days Book Club - Chapters 1-15 **MAJOR SPOILERS**

I'm slowly reading through CD but rationing myself to a few chapters a day.  I've now read this section of the Book Club because I've just got beyond Ch 15.

I've started noting the main scenes in each chapter and which characters appear in which chapters as an aide memoire.

Lots of good stuff.  Harry's not short on occasions where he is taken by surprise so far ...

Play is set in and around Southampton, UK.

We took a bit of time to get the group fully operating together - I had one team planning their next moves while sorting out the remaining individual.  It was manageable for short periods - mind you I expect they'll do separate things next time - for some of them their jobs tend to get in the way.  Basically from the backstory everyone had common contacts - except one individual had been wounded/delirious (infected) at the time so didn't remember some of them.

DFJunkie,

Your system works too.  The difficulty is that there are a number of GMs who have apparently crafted their own custom house rules that make it virtually impossible to use magic without the taken out result being mandated by GM fiat as automatically death.  This is a severe deviation from the rulebook and makes seriously complicated play balance.  ...

There's a balance to be struck between allowing unfettered use of potentially deadly magic against mortals and completely crippling wizards fighting mortals.  My view is that its' a 'table' discussion for the table to be happy with - my inclination is to enable sensible use of magic without any difficulty but to warn the player if the spell is likely to put mortals in danger.

We've got city and character creation tomorrow so we'll see how we go.

And I can see that point...but Fred's gone on record as saying that Lycanthropes DO get FP whenever it's not the Full Moon but their powers would be useful...so there's clearly a line past which even something that is a "pre-existing fact" gives Fate Points.

As for Holy Water, I'm not saying you need True Faith to have actual Holy Water...but you need a supplier with True Faith. Your supplier is then an NPC, a potent and useful plot hook who's ass you may need to pull out of the fire one of these days. I have a perfectly ordinary Pure Mortal in my game who has more Holy Stuff than you can shake a stick at...and a kickass In The Know supplier...who may well be the impetus for the entire plot of Book 3.

Isn't that more fun than either not having it or having it be easy to get?

1. My take is that there'll be times the Wizard's high concept gets compelled by the LoM and times it won't.  If you're actively not using the optimum specific power to avoid breaching LoM then it's probably fair enough to gain a compel.  If you could usefully apply your magic another way then I'd be less convinced.  There's often quite an impact from killing someone anyway, whoever you are, however you do it:  police investigations, PTSD.

2. I like the balance on the holy water front - you've got a justification that links into plot elements.

Holy water as a means of repelling evil appears - in the real world - to be exclusively a Roman Catholic tradition. Not sure if this is the case in the DV.  Basically priests and bishops sanctify holy water (usually for a font or smaller vessel).  I'd expect a priest being asked to bless a load of holy water would want to know what was going on and would have to be 'in the know' in order to agree.

DFRPG / Re: Problems With Social Conflicts
« on: June 19, 2010, 04:05:23 PM »
Greetings

In most cases social conflict is the safest option.  As an analagous example, in an Ars Magica game the other night the Council of Antwerp sought to have us arrested to prevent us from sailing to nearby pirate infested islands as they believed we could only be doing so to join the pirates.  We had men at arms with us (and mages) but the option we chose was to address the problem using social conflict - indeed I was thinking about how to replicate this in Fate with DFRPG at the time.   Our objective was to be able to sail and not be arrested; I assume the Council's objective was to be content that we were not a threat.  If we'd failed I suspect we'd have been arrested and we would have not sought to change it to a physical confrontation as fighting the City Watch would not have been a good medium or long term idea (similar to involving the mortal world in supernatural affairs).

In Fate terms we would have been using Rapport (and possibly Intimidation at one point) and invoking aspects such as Sponsored by an Archbishop, Merchant contacts, probably compelling an Aspect on the Council of Needing to Attract Trade.   In the event we clearly inflicted a minor consequence and they conceded as it wasn't really critical to them.  Had it gone the other way we'd have tried to concede to avoid jail e.g. agreeing to leave the city by land.

Earlier on the Watch had arrived at our accommodation to take us to the Council.  The rhetoric was fairly tough and one of our group pushed a Watchman into a personal duel  - by winning the duel we had a bit of helping Intimidation to persuade the Watch that the trip to the Council would be an escorted walk rather than an arrest.  I'm not sure whether I'd have made this a social conflict or not in Fate/DFRPG but it used physical combat to assist the social conflict - an all out physical response would have been a disaster from our perspective.

If everyone is generally Mediocre at skills then the reason someone is worse (-1) or (-2) should be coming out as an aspect anyway I would have thought.

Greetings

My copy of the pdfs arrived from Leisure Games today on a CD.  Excellent service and excellent content.
I've read the first couple of chapters so far and am very impressed as mch by the style as by the content.

The two books will probably rank as my most expensive single RPG purchase but I am well content on the evidence of the pdfs.

Edward
