DF Spoilers / Re: Peace talks excerpt indications

But without the ink it is doubtful that he'd be able to do it.  He didn't do it to Harry mainly because he
never came in contact with the ink.  He should not have been able to go into any wizard mind, even
the young one without them being aware of it.

If I remember correctly though, the ink was meant more for the Senior Council. As they said, the older the wizard, the harder it is to get them to bend. Though it has more to do with the mind being settled in the body, vs the actual age of said mind, hence why Lucio could be manipulated. The ink was there to help him push and nudge the senior council into doing what he wanted.

Plus, remember, the young ones were baptised in fire. They got plenty of education on the hot and heavy evocation side, but they probably skimped out on the mind manipulation portion of the curriculum. And they were just so dang young. They probably had no clue what was going on, since they'd never experienced it before. Most of them were anywhere from 16 to what, 25, maybe 30 for the oldest like Carlos? I'm 24 and I'm still experiencing all sorts of new stuff.

Never underestimate inexperience.

Codex Alera Spoilers / Re: What would the Vord eat, if they won?
« on: January 22, 2020, 09:41:36 AM »
Well, I'd assume once they got to the very end and there was absolutely nothing left, they'd just eat each other, and then die. Unless they somehow achieved space travel/interdimensional travel. The Vord aren't designed to be a never ending story. They live, kill, eat, and then die. There's no real happy ending for them.

But that would be several centuries down the line. There's still a lot of land left for them to conquer if they win Third Calderon. The Marat lands for sure, and then whatever is past that, all around the globe. So yes, eventually, they starve and die.

Codex Alera Spoilers / Re: Question about letters
« on: June 16, 2019, 11:50:24 AM »
I'm fairly sure the first letter was the one acknowledging Aquitaine as his heir. The "Super Important and Official Letter" as it were. The second recommended his physician and Ehren to Aquitaine.

A lust potion in itself is not even immoral. You can share it with your spouse on a nice holliday.

True.

Like it was said above, the Laws of Magic don't care about Morality, they care about the big things. You can use magic to rob banks, to make fake gold, to do all sorts of skeezy, illegal stuff. As long as it doesn't break the rules of magic, the White Council doesn't care.

They don't do anything about Binder because he didn't break the laws. The circumstances are skeezy, and treading close to the line, but doesn't cross it. However, they do monitor him, as shown by Morgan and Harry's actions and thoughts in Turn Coat.

They got involved in Ascher's case because she killed a man with magic. Without someone to stand before the  Council for her, they don't care about the circumstances. They only care about the end result. She killed a man with Magic.

Just like using the love potion to get with someone is totally wrong and illegal by most mortal laws. But the Council doesn't care about mortal laws. Just like how it didn't get involved in the World Wars, just because someone finds it repugnant and illegal, doesn't mean it is to everyone.

Wait, what room? The one Mab and Alfred kept his body in during Ghost Story?

I didn't think so. He stood up to both of the Fairie Princesses and their retinues for a good bit of time. If he was weak to them, I think he'd have gotten dissolved a lot quicker.

DF Spoilers / Re: Wizard strength level
« on: October 08, 2017, 12:01:59 AM »
I'm pretty sure there's an absolute upper limit for how much energy a human can handle. Not his tank, or his skill, but how much they can handle flowing through them at once. I'm looking at it like a lightbulb. It can channel energy pretty well, but eventually that filament just pops. I have a feeling at some point we're going to get a look at a Wizard or Warlock who goes too far, tries to channel/hold/manipulate too much energy and either catches fire, their head explodes, or just winks out of existence. We saw before at Chichen Itza where Harry pulled in the energy from the Ley line to power the Earth spell, and felt pressure in his head, and I think he felt overheated, although I can't be sure as I don't have my copy of Changes on hand. Shouldn't have stored my books with the Army. Gonna take forever to get them back.

First things first: Serack, I love your theory, and the work you put into it.

Second: I just have this image in my head of Harry walking in on Eb working some time traveling ritual, and somehow falling in and ending back in PG and seeing himself driving down the street and not getting hit by another car, freaking out, stealing a car, and hitting himself to keep the timeline going, and then it all just snowballing from there. And possibly fighting off other people that, if he does not do so, will completely rolfstomp PGH because he doesn't see them coming, or isn't prepared to fight them, or just isn't strong enough yet.

Just found out that all the training I'm going to do is like 66 college credits, and it's all electronics and stuff, so I could get a degree in computers. I've just gotta do my english and the training, and I'll be pretty much done.

Author Craft / Re: Describing the Main Character
« on: June 24, 2013, 04:02:13 PM »
The way i wrote it in one of the (many) stories i wrote (and never finished), was give little bits and pieces, then about three chapters in, the character got arrested and the interrogator went through his very long rap sheet and did the whole physical description. Probably not gonna work in most stories, but it fit pretty well in mine.

One piece of advice I like to follow from author Janice Hardy is, whenever you're writing, think "how can I make things worse for the hero?"

A guideline (not a rule, but rather a way to measure yourself) is to effectively have your hero lose, repeatedly, until the very end. If they win a fight, have the authorities come after them. If they find a valuable piece of information, have them captured. If they outsmart the villain, injure them. If they beat one of the villain's agents, hurt, or even kill, a loved one. Make every victory, no matter how small, cost them something. That way you keep them mortal in the reader's eyes.
Now, there are series where this is used very effectively, and then there are series where the author takes it too far. Like the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb. The way she makes Fitz feel worse, and worse, with no real victories, betrayal and pain at every turn, is just way too far. I haven't even finished the second book, because it puts me in such a bad mood. Yes, the main character has to get beaten up, yes he/she has to lose. But you've gotta throw in some wins! Some actual wins!

I think I remember what GW looks like, but I'm not sure.

Hey Snowy! I head out June 24th, ten days after graduation. And I'm fine. Just been busy. As for what have I blown up.... well, the finishing room in woodshop has quite alot of flammables in it... It wasn't my fault though! It was the other guy that pulled out the lighter! He's still growing back his eyebrows too... My burns have all healed though!

Gonna miss you man. But hey, who knows? Maybe we'll run into each other someday. And we can see who is the higher rank!
