We've got a lot of pictures we sling around here, what with the kittens, facepalms, and subjects of our Geek Lust. Nothing wrong with that as long as we stay PG-13. But I've noticed that often the images are hotlinked from whatever fun page we found them. This can cause problems for wherever we got the images from. The owners of those pages end up having bandwidth used by people who aren't even going on their site, just looking at the pics from the site here on ours. Depending on their server setup, traffic, etc, this can bog things down for them. And it makes them say bad, bad, words.
It's good manners to save the image, the upload it to whatever photo hosting site you prefer, and then post the image here for all to enjoy, cringe, laugh or weep at.

Images by http://chonastock.deviantart.com/ (http://chonastock.deviantart.com/) be sure to check out more of their work. Especially if you like blue girls and star trek. Or girls with swords.
If you right click the image and look at the properties, you'll see I'm using photobucket to host this picture of Geek Wonderment.
Then I've gone and put a link to the artist's site so all can make wonder and joy at them.
If you post an artist's image as I have, and by that I mean art, please give credit where credit's due. We're not talking a screengrab from Farscape you snatched from IMDB, but something somebody made, drew, shot, whatver. Most photographers and geek artists don't mind if you show their stuff, just provide a link to the source page so people can come see the rest of their work (and maybe buy something.) We artists love to know that people look at our stuff, we just want people to know it's our stuff their looking at. And then we want them to look at the rest of our stuff, and maybe leave a little positive feedback. Most people posting art on the interwebs don't mind sharing as long as you give them credit and don't grinch their bandwidth.
-
Especially if you like blue girls
Who DOESN'T like blue girls!?!?! ;D
-
Yup. Andorian babeishness FTW.
And yeah, linking to photo-hosting sites is definitely more intarwebz-friendly, since those sites are DESIGNED for traffic.
-
nothing to see here, move along. Mods - can you delete this? Cheers!
*edit by Shecky* NO! IT WILL STAY HERE FOR ALL ETERNITY! MWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA*hackcough* Sorry, addled brain from summer cold went all weird. I'll take this down as soon as I'm done being amused by it. :D
*edit by Wizwad*
:P
Bloody dwarves! It's always the short ones you have to watch out for!
Actually, I posted an addition and then noticed PG had already covered it and it wasn't a clarification at all. My excuse is that I should be in bed as it's nearing 2am here, and last night was also rather short. :)
*another edit, most of a year later* Yeah, still amused by this. Carry on.

Who DOESN'T like blue girls!?!?! ;D
I'd rather see them happy...

Compromise: Happy blue girls singing the blues?

I tried to read your post but my eyes were stuck to the blue girl.

Note to PG - and this is why the mods LOCK the threads after making an announcement..bwhahahahahahahahahahahahah! 8)

Oh, I don't mind the chatter, as long as people read the first part.
Which reminds me why I left it unlocked... To see what ideas/preferences people have for photo servers.
I've been using Photobucket, simply because it's the first free one I found. For those that use a photo hostey thing, which one do you use and is there any particular advantage to it?

I've only ever used photobucket, so I can't really speak in terms of comparison.
Some pros:
1) Intuitive and easy to use.
2) Some basic photo-editing options.
3) Well known, fairly trustworthy.
-
I have used Flickr, the only problem I found was, while it's free, you only have a limit of 200 images (I've been told that the older images are stored, just not visible). Of course, if you subscribe, there is more storage. So consequently I have also joined photobucket.
This thread is very appropriate, because I just checked fantasticfiction and according to them, the publishing date of Fool Moon Vol 1 (graphic novel) is 2035. link: (I took a screen shot before they correct it)

Hey Paynes,
If you've taken a screen grab and then put it on photobucket then linked it in to your posts. Where do you put the link so people can see the original stuff??? I use computers I don't really know all the ins and outs of them.
-
Well what a lot of us do instead is if you just want to show the picture, you use the images html tags (which is right above the :) in the list of smileys and put the link to the picture in it, even if it's not photobucket. If you want to show the original site then I imagine you can just link it.

Er, Hawthorn(e) I DON"T KNOW how to "just link it". That's why I'm asking. I've never put up an avatar pic before. ???
-
Wait you're talking about putting up an avatar?
-
Wait you're talking about putting up an avatar?
yeah, the little pic that goes up underneath our name on our comments. Currently I have Stars Above under mine, from the general list. Don't tell me let me guess - I goofed and didn't make that clear. Sorry. :-[
Sigh, I'm still learning this stuff.
-
You do that by putting a link to an online picture in the "I have my own pic" box under Profile / Forum Profile Information.

Okay, I got that. Thanks, Kapitan. But now Paynes was saying we should be doing screen captures and putting them on picture hosting site and then putting the link somewhere where people can go see it without tying up large amounts of bandwidth. Or was that about pictures IN our submissions?
And are we permitted to use a picture from someone else that we find in a general search of like Photobucket? Or not??
I'm trying to get this straight - sorry to be such a nuisance.

PG's post was concerning in-post pictures, like this:

I see. Thanks for taking time to explain - sorry for acting like a cretin. Sigh. :-[
-
Thanks for sorting that out Shecky. I've not been paying much attention to the boards this week, Snow Leapord, so I apologize for not getting back to you on that.

Is okay and no problem. Hey, life takes precedence. ;D I hope things are going well for you and yours?
-
Glad you got it sorted out SL. I was starting to go to explain it and then was like . . . what if that's not what he/she means . . . ? Then I woulda explained for nothing.
Nice pic Shecky XD

Not cretinous. Uninformed. Which has been remedied. So there's no problem, right? :)

Us vertically challenged types have to stay together.

Ah okay. I didn't want to assume since your profile doesn't say.

That's fine there's no problem. I wouldn't have gotten upset - life's way too short to get bent out of shape over something that minor.
I try to have an otter's view on life - Laugh and roll with it.
I just tend to be a bit cautious about putting all my info out there. I tend to like my privacy.

Not a bad policy on the interwebz. Both the Otter Technique and the privacy concerns. Lots of creeps out there.

Yeah, the Otter technique makes life so much easier. It does drive the little petty tyrants nuts though because they can't understand why you're laughing.
As for the creeps - unfortunately you're so right on that one. I shudder at the way some people just put their WHOLE lives out on the interwebz. It's very scary to me and counter intuitive as far as I'm concerned..
-
IF we use the otter technique do we get to eat oysters and rub our tummies?
-
IF we use the otter technique do we get to eat oysters and rub our tummies?
Only if you pat your head and rub your tummy simultaneously whilst eating the oysters.
-
If you want to, but it might be a bit hard to explain such behavior in a pizza joint. ;D
If you're patting your head and rubbing your tummy - what pray tell do you eat the oysters with??
-
Challenge Accepted!!
-
Your otter tail, obviously... =P
-
You need that for balance and/or staying in place.
-
Well, you could always just slurp up the oysters without using your hands. It could be like those pie eating contests at fairs! But crazier and more...fishy.
-
Thanks but no thanks - not much for oysters anyway. :o
-
Neither am I...but Protanis was the one who wanted the oysters. I am quite content with watching him flounder around attempting to figure it out. **grins**
-
Uses Yoda voice - Ebul you are. ::) ::)
-
**cackles** Come to the dark side..We have cookies! XD
-
^she makes tasty ones. Kinda scary to be around in the kitchen tho ;)
-
Your pic is freaky....
-
LOL, REALLY!! Did you even see when that post was from.
*Lassos Wat and drags her away*
-
Noooooooooo......
*pouts*
-
Nothing to see here folks
*Shifty eyes*
-
*grabs the doorframe*
You'll never take me alive!
-
But there's bacon where I'm taking you
*serious nod*
-
*tearfully considers this*
Bacon and puppies?
-
Fireworks too! Oh and pies are BANNED!
*nods*
-
*releases the doorframe*
Show me this magical wonderland.
-
NO! Wait! It's a trap! Jin's taking you to an all you can eat mexican buffet!
-
*gasp of pure horror*
No!
*damsel in distress wail*
Somebody save me!*
-
Ahhhh!!
*Thinks*
I wouldn't do that!
-
I am unconvinced!
You are gonna try and poison me!
*frowns*
-
But then you wouldn't record songs for me anymore :-X
-
Ah, oh yes. Quite true. Alright Jin. I believe you.
But I did not think you liked my singing that much. There isn't even any piano or anything to accompany it....
-
Do you intend to use a piano next time or are you referring to the Vanessa Carlton song i chose in the word association thread?
-
Oh, I can't play..... But that would be cool.
And I love that song.
-
:D As do I
-
If you want.... Never mind.
-
;D You know I want
-
Yeah, well, maybe if you are good I will sing for you again. ;D
-
Hmmm, I don't like maybes.
*Crosses Fingers*
Yeah that feels better
-
Why would that make you feel better?
-
You know... I have no clue. Sounded funny in my head, go figure.
Do I have to be good IC or OOC? One is easier than the other
-
Actually don't be good. That might freak me out. I love to sing so it will happen regardless. That is if people want me to.
-
You know, my friend Raquel says the same thing. She gets this weird nervous look every time I do something nice for her lol
-
*grins*
I bet it seems very suspious. ;D
-
Very much so :P
-
*grins*
How troublesome for those around you. *laughter*
Always on their toes
-
It's tough job ;)
-
I bet they love it ;D
-
Haha, they love me so they must.
-
;D
You make their lives less boring. Which means you have excessive awesome. Use you powers for good.
-
*Nods seriously*
For good
*Salute*
-
Welcome to the Sisterhood of Human Heros.
*salute*
-
*Cannot abide being in a sisterhood... unless there are pillow fights*
-
*grabs a pillow and hits him in the head*
-
Game on!
*grabs a pillow. Commences fighting with said weapon*
-
*thoroughly pummels Jin with little reguard for mercy and thus expects none*
-
*None given*
I demand feathers fly out of these pillows!
-
*a rediculously excessive amount of feathers erupt from the pillows and drift through the air like downy snow. Obviously there are more feathers in the air then can be contained in two pillows, two pillows that are still very fluffy*
-
*Slow Motion*
Yaaaaaaay!
-
*slow motion*
Pillow Karate Chop!
-
*Slow Motion Surprise*
Ohhhhhh Nooooo
-
*slow motion*
*Evil grin of I CRUSH YOU LIKE THE BUG THAT YOU ARE, OH FOOL WHO DARED TO CHALLENGE ME!
-
*Slow motion hidden pillow jutsu!*
Sneeeeeak Attttttaaaack!
-
*slow motion*
Holy crap I am doomed! One last wild swing of panic.
-
*Mutual Destruction*
-
*explostion of pillows and feathers of epic proportion liken unto a Nuke*
-
Yeah, we're kinda awesome
-
8) I know this.
-
That was fun. I miss it :'(
-
Jin..... You are bored arn't you.
*glomps*
It was super fun. I miss it too.... *sigh*
-
SUPER BORED!!!
*hair to short to pull out*
-
We could cheat at RPG
-
*Is interested in this prospect*
What do you propose?
-
I perpose.......
Well.... It's only a half formed plan really...
-
Well, so far you have blowed stuff up....... :o
-
There is no evidence of that........
-
Phid would disagree :P
-
*and suddenly from nowhere a bomb goes off with a concussion strong enough to flatten the residence of the Bar. Wood groans and cracks under the strain as chunks of rock fall form the celing. Every glass in the bar explodes into showering shards of razor sharp fragment. Alcohol spills onto the floor as the bar fiends ducks to avoide the shattered bottles. The floor rocks and settles.*
*in the quiet aftermath rocks drop occasionally as the dust settles over the bar.*

The mysterious lost post

Would have made life more exciting. I am rather fond of that post, if I do say so myself.
I am thinking of crating and RPG thread that I GM kinda like Garrat and hellfire but it's like a 20s salon.
-
Salon or Saloon. A salon would be...interesting actually. hahahahaha
