Hullo!Yes, we watched it on TV. It was very exciting.
Did everyone hear about the successful launch of NASA’and Space X’s Falcon/Dragon system? 😀😀😀
!!!! OTLAN !!!!
Nice to see you again!!! How are you?
Oh, I definitely have to watch the Hobbit movies again. I didn't remember the cool arrow smashing thingies!
And by the way: it's June already. Not long till July. And what's in July ? ? ? ? Squeeeee!!!! Peace Talks!!!!!!
See me do the dance of joy!
I already told friends not to expect anything from me, in the first days the book is out. The world around me will not exist, only the bare necessities. Like eat, drink, sleep. OK probably not so much sleep.
Apropos eat. I have eaten too much cake during the last days, so I will go out now doing a bit of really fast walking, not running. See you later.
Oh, you can tell the world whatever you like. That doesn't mean, it will do as you say. LOL
The book will come out in the middle of my nightshift week. So, there will not really be time to read much, but I will try. Also, I have kids who depend on me. Maybe I'm going to start a week later when my life has hopefully quiet down, but I'm not sure, if I can control myself that long.
It was a lot of cake. Really a lot. Leftover from my birthday. There was no party, but some relatives and friends came by one after another. It wasn't warm, but it wasn't raining either, so I put some seats and tables in the garden, where everybody could spread out. That's not illegal. My brother in law brought a big Spongebob cake. With cream and strawberrys. I had made a plum cake with last year's frozen plums. We ate for 3 days until finally there was no more Spongebob left. And I forgot to take a picture.
Anyway, always, when there is a new book out that I've waited for long, I tend to loose myself in it.
By now, the release date is so near, that I am not able to read anything else until I have it in my clutches. I tried to read the first Harley Merlin, another book from the library, but I couldn't continue. So I'm reading Brief Cases again.
Today I was at the river walking fast but not running ;). There were people every 2 minutes or so. Got on my nerves. I'm no longer used to so many people. Maybe I should have gone in the morning and not almost at noon.
Hullo!(((((((((PD))))))))))), yes, I've seen it! It was very exciting, I love to see those things. Also learning a few things, like how do a female astronaut to wash her long hair without gravity. It was good to see some good news from USA.
Did everyone hear about the successful launch of NASA’and Space X’s Falcon/Dragon system? 😀😀😀
I always imagined Eric Balfour as Harry :)
(I'll be back later)
Hello everyone! Sorry I was absent for a while, I've been busy.
(((((((((PD))))))))))), yes, I've seen it! It was very exciting, I love to see those things. Also learning a few things, like how do a female astronaut to wash her long hair without gravity. It was good to see some good news from USA.
@Regenbogen We forgot your birthday??? :'( :'( Sorry!! :'( :'( I hope it was a good one.
I am planning to try to do something like what you say for PT release, but I have classes on Tuesday (I am one of those doing the class, not being a student). But I will read all what I can. I am probably going to stay away of the forum until I finish it. That is my usual modus operandi whenever there is a new JB book, so to avoid any shadow of a spoiler.
((((((Otlan)))))) Glad to see you! I am glad you are safe and sound. My city is not doing well, but at least the last couple of days were better than the previous ones. That is good, because with Winter coming we are worried. At least, some of us are, while other are doing protests about the quarantine and some others are becoming...more relaxed about it. And in a small city in the next province, which had not cases for two months, they made a clandestine baby shower and now at around 15 positive cases.
(((Fcrate))) Good to see you too.
I've began watching the new season of Agents of SHIELD and I liked it a lot! Also liking Stargirl (the show, not the movie).
Hello weird! Dina, karate classes via zoom reminds me of a friend of mine that used to watch Bruce Lee movies and replicate the moves on the go. :D
Edit: Regen, I just read that. Did he do noises as well? I hope your kid can get into karate classes, and maybe watch her exertion? She'll eat like a baby elephant with this much activity xD
Today was the first day I've felt Normal in Months.
Sorry about the car accident and its consequences Regen. And that sounds good about your jiu-jitsu. I don't know much about the differences between disciplines, but knowing how to fall seems indeed like an useful skill.Yes. I am very grateful, that I regained the use of my leg and my arm. I was very lucky. I can do whatever I need to do and most of the time you can't even see a limp.
Jiu-jitsu is a mixture of several martial arts, including parts of aikido and I think judo
It's the other way around!Ah, yes . Thank you. You even have names. One never stops learning.
Actually, "judo" is the modern/derived sport (late 1800's) largely (but not solely!) from jiu-jitsu by the founder Jigaro Kano.
Aikido is even more modern, created by "the founder" (O-Sensei Morihei Ueshiba) in the early/mid part of last century. It is based on earlier systems, including "aiki-jujutsu." Ueshiba was a very spiritual man, and his art reflects this; it's one of the least "combative" martial arts around.
Finally worth noting is the "Gracie" (also called "Brazilian") style of jiu-jitsu, which is a bit less formalized (and much more groundwork & grapple-centric) than most of the ancestral Japanese styles. A key figure was actually a Judoka who specialized in groundwork, who introduced the Gracie family to his style.
Jiu-jitsu itself (formalized styles of grapple-centric combat in Japan) is well over 1000 years old, with earliest written records about 1300 years ago, although the name "jujutsu" (or however you want to latinize the spelling) is "only" a few centuries old.
Here endeth the martial-arts geekery. ;-)
I think I’m about ready to paint myself blue, run off to live in the woods and find some really good mushrooms.
I've been to the woods and they don't have flush toilets. ;)LOL
I think I’m about ready to paint myself blue, run off to live in the woods and find some really good mushrooms. It seems to be the only logical response.
((((((((((SoG))))))))))))) :D :D :D :D :D
So good to see you here!
Do you know that we are having sample chapters for PT? I am reading them and I want to read more!!
LOL! Such unladylike thing...I loved it :DI don't know how it's called either. But I know it. Face shield maybe?
But seriously, and sorry for the yuk factor, but the spit is heavier than the droplets that can be spread when you are singing at the top of your lungs. Those can be carried on even more than that (but they have a lesser chance to touch something that can infest another people).
I believe the best option would be to wear those plastic mask that cover your entire face but allows you to sing. Like this, I don't know how to say it in English
(https://http2.mlstatic.com/D_Q_NP_680235-MLA41462367058_042020-AB.webp)
Don't knock it 'til you've tried it.
Also blue isn't the safest of colours. UK summers still have a high chance of frostbite.
Or being adopted by Nac Mac Feegles.
I saw the post about face shields. I wear one at work. Prefer it to masks. Easier to breathe when highly active. Harder to see when reading.
Hey there. Why? What did you do?
And he said he trusted his weather app that said the rain would start at noon and not earlier. Funny, I thought he was supposed to trust in God about that. LOLTrust in God is a good baseline. Weather app helps. xD
But of course I didn't say so. Sometimes I know when to shut up. ;)
Otlan!!!! Nice to hear you enjoyed your visit in the game shop.
Dina: no rain. Not even at noon. But in the early evening.
The loss of taste and smell sounds a lot like corona. Your poor friend. Now she has to stay at home. I hope she has someone to get her what she needs.
These are times when I hope not to get a normal cold, because you will have to stay at home as prevention and can't even go out to get food and other things you need.
Hi New Weird. May God help me through these next couple of days at work. Retail around holidays is more stressful than any amount of schooling I've ever been through.Oh, I was wondering. Of course, it's Independence day.
(((((((((((DC))))))))))))))I would make the argument that it's probably worse because of the pandemic, not in spite of it.
Sending you all the good energy.
Is it that bad, even in pandaemia?
(((((((((DC)))))))))))))Yeah I can see that.
I don't think any of those things are true but I do suspect(click to show/hide)
Well, if you will go to Reddit, best be prepared for madness and salt. Most of the subs I frequent are pretty good about that, honestly, but yeah I'm not sure what I expected.
Yeah I can see that.
Most of the subs I frequent are pretty good about that, honestly, but yeah I'm not sure what I expected.
Ohhh, I summoned you, Regen! That is a power I use to have :)
Another is Blacklisted By History: Joe McCarthy and His Fight Against America’s Enemies by journalist M Stanton Evans, which is a tome.Does it paint McCarthy in a positive light? Because that is a...controversial position, to put it delicately.
Is he as infamous outside the US as he is in the US? Controversial is about the most polite word I could think of to describe McCarthy. :PWell, the "idea" of him is very infamous. I mean, we know about blacklist, anti-commie activities and the word "mcCarthysm". We also know, more or less, when all that happen. But in general we have not idea who he was. I mean, if he was married, if he had children, how and when he died.
Ah, all right then. Sorry about my mistake but ey! No covid is always good! I am so far good but I am indoors pretty much all the time. Hubby and I are hermits together now :)I just realized that what they were probably referring to is that I paid off my student loans as of Friday.
And about the police story, now I am curious. What movies?
Oh. It's actually pretty good. It's about crime solving. And I like the main character. I'm glad I finally found something I can keep on reading. That doesn't mean, I don't like all the other books I have started in the past weeks, but they were not what I needed. I will read them at the right time. Or not.Hamlet was very stuffy and overblown for me, honestly. Very much a Shakespearean tragedy but almost too much if that makes sense?
Sometimes the taste changes or develops. Sometimes I suddenly like a story I didn't like ten or twenty years ago. Or I put emphasis on different aspects of a story than I did before.
So maybe I might give The Name Of The Rose another try someday. I was about 20 when I tried to read it. And maybe I'll give Hamlet another try, too.
But for now I am content with this new book, which I am able to continue in spite of the first chapter of Battle Ground only days away. ;D ;D ;D
It frustrates me when I don't read anything. And it always has to be fiction. And I have to like the main character or at least one of the characters, if there are several.
It's always kind of amused me that the different types of post-primary German schools translate as "Middle school" (which is what it's most often called in the US), "real school" and... well, you know. :PThat's why I didn't translate. 8)
((((((((Otlan))))))))))
It is so good to see you!!
How are you doing? And your family? Have you read PT? I am so looking forward to BG. Today they dropped the 3rd and final sample chapter. Only 15 days to go...:-)
I have not seen the video yet as I am more or less busy, and about to watch a class (we subscribed to some streaming courses, this one is about philosophy).
I believe PT is...complicated. The first part is a mess, then becomes great but is over before BIG THINGS happen, so I think it would be a great idea to read both books together. Also, don't worry about the end of the series, we still have many, many books in front of us and JB is taking a lot of time between them. This are not two books, but one that is split. So, we still are very far away of the end of the series. And his next book is going to be of the other series (Cinder Spires). So...lots of time.
We are all doing fine, but Argentina is having a lot of cases, so things are complicated. I have been very busy too. But I missed you. I am missing playing our RPG too. I was thinking about some of our stories just yesterday
*loves hug, hugs back*
Do you know that a study of I don't remember who ( :P) proved that Argentinians are very, very into hug each other, and the country in the world which less respects personal space. The polar opposite is Finland, where, according to the stories, has not even realized there is a social distancing policy, as that is normal life for them. So, I really miss be with friends and hugging them. But I am so grateful for technology allowing us to keep the contact with each other! Classes, meetings, and I still play RPG with my party :)
Sorry about your work, but again glad to hear that you are safe
I have been very worried for Snowy too, but just today I confirmed she is ok. At least, she is safe. But she is not really well, here: https://www.paranetonline.com/index.php/board,41.0.html
I forgot to watch the video you posted, so I will do it now
(((((((Otlan)))))))
I certainly liked your other video and this one, well, I quite familiar with the song. And the video is so fun to watch :)
So far it seems that I will be free on Tuesday, for BG! So excited!
Is everyone off reading BG?
Huh.
Weird.
Do yourself a favour, Otlan, avoid BG spoilers as much as you can.
I wasn't careful enough but mind still=blown.
Yeah, wait until the ending and then you tell me how much of it you predicted :)
Oh yes, my country is burning metaphorically too. Lot of job losses, stores closing for ever, things like that. The government is doing with they can, helping the poorer, but that means middle class (in general) is doing quite poorly. We are a poor country, we simply don't have the money to help everyone, so they choose to help the poorer. It's just not enough. So people is in the streets, protesting and asking that they open everything (we have been slowly opening things, and in all cases, the Covid cases rised). But I prefer jobless than dead, so I want lockdown, I want things close, I want people caring for the others. People is dying, I don't understand how other people don't care. I know you may think I say it because I have a job and I am doing fine, but believe me, I say because I am scared. Terrible scared.
Will do n_n .
And I understand that Dina. I understand people being scared. But your not thinking. What happens when they're are no more jobs? What happens when people can no longer afford food, clothing and housing? What happens when your economy literally implodes? Your country is going to collapse. People are going to starve or be murder for what they have, rioting and looting will run rampant. People will die by the score, and your country will likely never recover.
Now, Picture that on a Global Scale. People want things to reopen, because our very survival depends on it. Cowering in fear will solve nothing. It's worse then doing nothing Dina. The world as we know it, is quite literally standing on the brink of Oblivion. All it's going to take is one little push, and when the Dominoes begin to fall, there will be no stopping it. People know that, and they're afraid.
The people trying to get things open again? They're the ones starting into that gapping maw, though they may not realize it. They're trying to pull the world back from the brink. They're not heros, but they're smart enough to know we're all of us in trouble. Deep trouble.

Will do n_n .Most first world countries are rich enough to prevent at least the worst of it otherwise they just lack the political will to do so. It is just a matter of implementing some safety nets until the worst is over. So no I do not expect mass rioting and civil war unless those governments mishandle things on a scale unheard of until now.

Well, even without any children I wouldn't risk a travel to Paris, is too uncertain (in fact, I don't think my country is allowing trips to France right now. I mean, yes, you can go, it's the coming home what I don't think it is allowed).Better than we thought actually but he is more tiresome because all kind of outdoor activities he liked and tired him a bit became difficult. He liked crowds and eating spicy food and that is a bit problematic now.
How is your son taking the quarantine measures?
You are right about Paris.I can make it myself of course and I do but what I used to do with my son is visit places in our local chinatown and try things. There is a chinese bakery he likes to visit and a shop where you can get durian ice cream and a lunchroom that is very child friendly where I can get all kind of dishes.
Out of curiosity, why is it difficult to get spicy food now for you?

Arjan, Donald Trump is the current President of the United States -_- . How much more Mishandled do you think our Government is?Ah you are living there, I live in Europe.
Ah you are living there, I live in Europe.
I don’t think it will get much worse, there is a limit to what Trump can mess up domestically and with a bit of luck he is gone next year.
But a lot of what is going on is structurally and is going wrong for years now before Trump. It is just more visible partly thanks to modern technology.
Ok Otlan, if you don't see a spike of cases then you may try open some things, but mind you, when we try to do that, our cases began to rise.
Ok, SERIOUS SPOILER ABOUT BG, don't read unless you finished it:(click to show/hide)
I've meant "you" in a generic way, not "you" personally (what actually is one of the problems of English for me).
And no, you said you had read a lot of the book by the time I told you to brace up, I was more thinking in the climax and the ending. About the Outsiders, not sure I agree (but I won't discuss more of it in this area of the forum)

Two different words in some languages.
Yes, like in Spanish. That is why the English "you" sometimes confuses me. Still, there are clases where even in Spanish the use is confuse. Like when you say "one does that thing" but you don't mean one person but "any given person".
But don't believe English is so bad, it's only a little vague sometimes.

We also have a more polite form comparable with french tu and vous. Language changes though because I often heard the polite form in my youth and now it is barely used.

Apparently that is what happened with vosotros and its transformation in ustedes- By the way, we (Latin Americans) also have a formal "usted" use for a single person.

Otlan, I did not understand what you mean by that. We have things similar to "it's impossible" or "you can't do that"
Sorry Dina, I was referring to your use "one dose that thing." Folks in America don't really talk that way. We tend to be more straight forward and to the point. I think that's why people in other countries tend to see us as rude or crass. That is why you should not translate literally. But the dutch can be pretty straightforward as well.
It's complicated. Sometimes you use one option, sometimes you use another. We have similar phrasings, we also say the same things English speaker say, more or less. Only it seems like Latin languages are more versatile in some aspects. But don't worry, it does not sound rude. (And I believe the fame of rude is only because people of other countries is resented by USA power, nothing else. I mean, there are many rude people in USA and they are highlighted by the whole world, while there are many rude people here but it is not so well-known because the rest of the world couldn't care less).
If you want to share, where are you from, Arjan?Netherlands. A small town in the province of Southern Holland between The Hague and Amsterdam.
Hello weird... :DHere every day is laundry day.
It's laundry day.... Again.. I've been dreading this for two weeks...
On the bright side, I bought Battle Ground yesterday, and I'm keeping it till Friday at least. Have to stretch it out until The Rhythm of War in November. Once I start reading, it'll take me two days at most, so...
But I haven't read the sample chapters yet, so that's something. :D
I have to do laundry every week. It cost me about $10-$20, depending if I have quarters left over from the previous week.It is similar but it has a different feeling to it. It both changes the content and mood of the conversation but I think they have different before and after content. The Dutch expression is more from a funny banter avoiding the problems to tackle to a serieus conversation about problems to tackle. Together.
@Arjan: A similler saying to Alle gekheid op een stokje in English would be "No more Mr. Nice Guy."
((((Otlan))))))
I am sure we have to have a similar saying, but I can't think one right now.
Local expressions or idioms are so fun. For example, when you want to tell someone that you are too angry and not in the mood of being disturbed, here we say "el horno no está para bollos", which literally means "the oven is not ready for bollos". Now, as far as I know, bollos are the name used in other Latin America countries for quite small breads, but we don't use that word. We use the word "bollos" for several other things, but not one related with ovens. So, the expression is never used in its literal sense in Argentina.
*Huggles back* Hi Di-Di n_n !My wife heard it. Really big families.
Yes, idioms are very fun. *Chuckles* I like that expression XD . And I get it, it kind of means your overworked, tired, exhausted, you just need a brake. I like that n_n . I can't think of a similar expression we have in English, don't think there is one.
@Arjan: Well yes, usually we say our saying at something or someone when we're pissed off at them/it and are about to do something that will lead to cuts and bruises XD. In the context, it means your done screwing around and are about to get serious.
Two washing Machines?? That seems a little hard to believe. I've head of people with washers and dryers, but never two washing machines.
@PD: Yo n_n !
My wife heard it. Really big families.
People must make good money then. That's exspensive on every level.Found it on a Dutch site. Dutch farmers with a strict religious background and ten children.
:D
((((((Otlan)))))))
That would be awesome
It would be awesome that you and Fcrate played together, Otlan.
Regen, excellent about reading so much! I hope you get better soon. About terror movies, I was always scared for them, so I wouldn't even dream to spy on them. In fact, when I heard disturbing music and hurried to my bed as fast as I could. I still don't like terror movies and, for example, I thought NOS4A2 was not for me. I did watch Helstrom, which is a "terror" series inspired in a comic by Marvel, but it is not really that scary. Sort of Supernatural (which I love). It's not "real terror". You may have a jump here and there, but in general you are not really scared.
@Regen: very cool wand. The rubber bands to give it the knotted look, yes? Where does the aluminum foil come in?
Wow.. That painting is quite good. Your daughter is a little scary. Lol
Yes, it is difficult to translate titles when they involve puns.Yes, I think renegado is right. The Spanish titles pop up, when I just put in the author's name in the search function.
I don't know all the Spanish titles, but those I remember are La Tormenta (The storm), Luna Llena (Full Moon), La Tumba (the grave, completely avoiding the danger part), El Caballero (the knight), Máscaras de muerte (Death masks, literal), then I am not sure.I believe blood rites became "derecho de sangre", which would be blood rights. And I am pretty sure White Night was translated "El trono blanco (the white throne). Not sure about the others. I think Turn Coat become Renegado (renegade), which is quite fitting actually.
Yes, or probably "el caballero del verano" . It's a subtle nuance. Literally, would be the difference between "of summer" and "off the summer". In Spanish, sounds more natural "el caballero del verano"I meant "of the summer", not off
How weird that the Spanish name appears in your browser
Weird.Storm Front → Dans l'oeil du cyclone
I wonder how Harry sounds in French :)
Thanks! I'll let you know how they were.Appreciated. :)
LOL! Nobody was posting anything, it's not only you. :)Ah, that's a relief. You are not mad, because I ignored you. LOL
How are you doing, Regen? How is school in Germany? We are doing a little better (I guess, because of Spring) about covid, so we are opening schools for a couple of hours every day, so children can reconnect with classmates and teachers before the end of the year. Classes themselves are still virtual.
So, was it something I said? :'(Yes.. The part about not having to get up early had me envious. Also the part about burgers.. I haven't had burgers in 3 years. So I decided to boycott the thread until my inner pain subsides.
Awesome video!Up to a point. I once bought 99% and it was really not edible. Good for a hot chocolate drink though.
Well, I can't blame him. I found salsa movements quite difficult (I never had classes, though, I am sure that would help :))
Totally random comment, but last night we bought a very dark chocolate and I just had a piece. It is delicious. We love dark chocolate.
LOL! I can't imagine muffins so dark. But with milk
As a side comment, I also like coffee and tea without sugar.
But with milkMe too. Coffee without sugar but with milk, though I admit mostly it's milk with coffee.
Arjan, Oh, so a British wife? Are there any funny cultural differences between you? There are but the difference between brexit and remain is probably greater ;D
LOL! I was thinking things like the temperature of the beer :)I usually drink cider when I am there. You can get good cider everywhere in Brittain but in Holland you get only bad sweet stuff or you have to buy it in special shops that sell UK products.
I am not sure. We say "Sidra" for the alcoholic beverage but it is not common to drink it outside of the Holiday season. It is very associated to Christmas and New Year. It is also used in Weddings and other celebrations, mainly as a cheaper alternative to champagne. So, it is very unusual to have sidra on a bar, as an ordinary drink.I know they make sidra in spain but I never tasted it. Brittish cider is different from french cider, it is more in the style of beer and it is drunk like beer often from tap in pubs while the french ciders I tasted where more like weak apple wine with bubbles. A cheaper alcohol free version with bubbels is sometimes used for children so they have their own "champaign" for the beginning of the new year.
There are but the difference between brexit and remain is probably greater ;DArjan, be very careful or you'll brexit your way out of a marriage. It has happened.. :D
Arjan, be very careful or you'll brexit your way out of a marriage. It has happened.. :DYou can put cardamom in your coffee too.
About drinks (and food) I'll give everything a first try. But I have to say, I'm very conservative about my drinks. It's just plain tea for me (tea pot, not tea bags) or regular coffee. My mother used to put milk on the tea, half and half, and sometimes spice it with a little cardamom. Was very good.
I tried it a few times, as long as the flavor isn't strong enough to shock me, it's fine. I generally love cardamom in my food.I know all the arguments. A friend of mine came here about two decades ago because even with good papers it is easier to go to some foreign country than trying your luck in the south of England if you are a northerner and the economy was better here at the time. It fluctuates.
As for brexit, I play maybe 3 times a week with a few friends from Europe, and one of the brits is quite passionate about it. Always expect at least one argument between him and the French guy every week about brexit.
Ah, interesting.
In a totally unrelated note, I found a picture of a young Jeff Godblum and I think he looks a lot of the Harry Dresden that is in my head. He is also tall

I absolutely agree about Blackthorne! I love that man (watching him in Arrow was a delight) and I think he did a great job as Harry.Oh yes, I watched Arrow only because of him. :-* Otherwise I didn't like Arrow so much.
Today we were at a side arm of the river. There are ducks who like to be fed. We had fun. The ducks are cute. When they notice someone coming, it looks like they run over the water towards you. We are definitely not the only ones feeding them. One of the adult male ducks is already very fat.
I hope your daughter is okay Regen. Here there are lots of private labs with x-ray. Nothing like that where you live?Yummy. LOL. I hope no one gets the idea. There are only 6 of them yet. And only one female. A beautiful cream coloured one. I do think they were put there on purpose. This area has been created artificially out of a compromise the water power company had negotiated with the community to reestablish the wild life there, because the original bed of the river has dried out and a lot of animals who lived there died, because of the canal the company built. You can still see, where the original side arm of the river was. I believe the ducks were part of that wild life revival, or they came on their own. I don't know. But they were not here a few years ago.
Okay that part just made me hungry..
Think orange peel marinade and an oven.
Oh I am so glad to hear that :D *does a happy dance*Yeah. Me too. ;D
Still, not interested in Mirror Mirror Dresden :)
I just wanted to say that Maradona is dead and I am so, so sad.:'( I'm sorry.
I just wanted to say that Maradona is dead and I am so, so sad.
Ah, The Cupboard.Ouch. Does it survive the first night? I'm usually quite smart about this. I never get caught.
So important it merits Capital Letters.
It's where all of the non perishable festive treats are kept.
WOE BETIDE THOSE WHO RAID THE CUPBOARD BEFORE CHRISTMAS EVE
Our tree was with caramel candies and chocolate. My mother always had a lot more hidden to replace those who had gone mysteriously missing. But not enough to keep the tree stocked :)
Oh, I'm excited about Captain Jack. I hope they show the same episode here. Is it a Capaldi or a Whittaker episode?
The Chronicles of St Mary's.Is the author Jodi Taylor? The first book called "Just One Damned Thing After Another"? I'm going to read an excerpt when I've finished the new Verus.
Brilliant series.
Is the author Jodi Taylor? The first book called "Just One Damned Thing After Another"?
We are going to try this one: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/slow-cooker-beef-bourguignon
Looks very good indeed. And Regen, fondue! Delicious! Even when I prefer fondue of cheese instead of meat, I think I would like to try that for a special dinner. Not for Christmas here, though, as it is too hot.But it is winter here and we need comfort food. Stew with potato mash and Brussels sprouts. We probably make too much but stew freezes well.
We think we are going to do a sort of buffet froid. Piononos, salads, several cheeses and cold meats, things like that.
But it is winter here and we need comfort food. Stew with potato mash and Brussels sprouts. We probably make too much but stew freezes well.Us, too. So you have food for the next days without having to cook anything new. We'll probably eat meat, sprouts and bread with sauce for two days. Mushrooms usually are eaten up on the first day.
I don't think I ever walked much on New Year day. Normally hubby and I spent the end of the year at my cousin's home, where we spend the night. And the first day of the year, we do a small walk (couple of blocks) towards the bus stop. Then at home we take a nap, as we would have slept little and not too well. And then it's just a pretty normal evening. But this year, it has been different, as we stayed home. But we went to bed very late as we watched tv and hubby played games. It just did not feel right to go to bed early- It's New Year!We have a very well isolated house so sometimes we just have to get out to get some fresh air and to move around so we get enough exercise to stay mobile.
Hubby has a beard, mostly white :D8) cool
Well, if you do all that and wear masks and keep social distance... :D.That's what I was hoping he'd say. :D
In other notices, I watched WW84, I don't know if you know this about me, Fcrate, but I am a HUGE Wonder Woman fan. And I liked the first Wonder Woman. But this one is truly bad. There are some pretty scenes and a few moments I liked, and the mid-credits scene made me squee, but the rest of the movie is depressingly bad.
I hope you enjoyed your game Dina. The soup was delicious, but today for some reason one of my coworkers crowded me from behind and I growled at him.. :D
Hopefully it will pass.
Not your fault.. Hmmm, where have I heard that before? :P
Oh, that looks delicious :)It is matured Gouda like cheese produced somewhere in the Netherlands. It gets harder and the taste changes when it matures more. This is the kind of cheese you are likely to get if you just ask for cheese on your bread in Holland.
The other cheese looks like "Fontina", a cheese I am quite fond of when I want softer flavors (by opposition to hard and stringent cheeses, like Parmesan, Reggianito, Provolone...
I understand herbs. But I'm surprised that some people find mould appetizing. I mean, I'd take penicillin as an injection, but ingesting mould sounds like a generally bad idea to me. No offense Regen :D
I like Gouda. I don't know it's exactly like the one you can find in the Netherlands but I certainly like it.I think the difference is more in variety and it is not just Dutch cheese. When you live far from the country of origin you only get a few different types of what traders think is suitable for export.
My dose of cheese today was some Reggianito grated above my gnocchi.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggianito (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggianito)
Minor correction, is not vigilante cheese, the dessert is called just "vigilante". It's because "vigilante" is what we call the policeman of the street. Years ago, the owners of restaurants and bars gave the policeman of their street a free serving of cheese and a quince or sweet potato solid jelly as a "reward" for their work. And a way to have them with more energy. In time, that combination was called "vigilante".Aaaaah! That's cool. :)
It's a classic :D
30 c Is panic here and we can not stand it for too long. :)I agree. We can only stand by surrounding us with big amounts of water or ingesting ice cream.
The Chinese shop sells taro ice cream, maybe I should try it.Um... That sounds like a really bad idea. Kinda like carrot or clover juice (yes, some people drink that, including my father).
I think a trillion bytes of data should be called a Trilobyte ::) - who's with me?Absolutely.
:D ;D That's why I want to do this ;D :D
Convrsation about trilobytes would become so weird :D
And I can't believe that my cat gave birth on my bed... Again... :@It is the best place.
I made a perfectly good and dark den for her in the my storage room, and deposited her there before I went to sleep when it became obvious that she's giving birth in a few hours.. I went to sleep and woke up to find that she gave birth in the bend of my knees. I just spent an hour washing the blankets. She likes being with you and trusts you. Of course she won’t go to a dark and lonely storage room. Cats go where it is nice and warm.
LOL Fcrate! But not that you had to wash the blankets. And aaaaw, kittens!!!
Our cat is well again. She was a bit sad, when she didn't get any more antibiotics. The pills seemed tasty. She always looked for more ;).
Wow. I am glad she is better but I never heard of a cat liking their antibiotics. It's normally hell on earth to feed a cat any pill.Oh Yes: https://www.pawsperouspets.com/humor/catpill.shtml
Oh Yes: https://www.pawsperouspets.com/humor/catpill.shtml
Ok,first of all, liver sausage?First thing that I noticed as well xD
First thing that I noticed as well xD
@Regen: A friend of mine sent me this. Lol
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXSSsMJt5RY
Um, why not? I love liver usually, most ways it's cooked.I thought you didn't eat pig :o
I tried the worm pill today and she ate it!!!!!! Cool. She didn't do that a few years ago. Now I can eat the Leberwurst myself. LOL.Awesome! And yes, she deserves it!
No, she can eat some, too. As a reward. And because she looks cute with her big eyes. And because she is the cat.
Ah ok. In Argentina, leberwurst is generally made of pig, but I suppose there are other varieties, perhaps in kosher stores or something. I just never searched for it (as I said, I am not that fond of it).Maybe because it's pig. I like calf best, but only the smooth one. On bread with lots of pepper and some onions. And sometimes on Breze.
Really? I never thought in leberwurst as particularly appealing for children.Children like sausages. Mine does, all kinds of sausages.
And good about the chorizo, I am sure it is delicious.
"Normal" sausages are children favorites :)- Leberwurst, I am not so sure. Perhaps I am mistaken.Start young and children can learn to appreciate almost everything.
That sounds so much fun! I wish we had that tradition but we never had it. We do buy chocolate eggs, though :)Yes but any excuse is good for buying chocolate ;D
Actually, even when we are full grown-ups, hubby and I will buy a chocolate egg this week.
Yes but any excuse is good for buying chocolate ;DSure there is. ;) If course there will be chocolate eggs, too. They go into the easternest the kids have built outside. And the easter bunny will hide chocolate everywhere. It's nice to watch them searching. And fun hiding things... Or so I've heard from the bunny... ;)
Oh, Fcrate!
You will always be in our hearts for your sacrifice.
Oooh, chivalry! I am very grateful for your sacrifice. This is what men do..
I laughed at this today, speaking of Pesaj: Moses was the first downloading a file from the Cloud to his tablet :)Lmao :D
I laughed at this today, speaking of Pesaj: Moses was the first downloading a file from the Cloud to his tablet :)
;D A creative April's fool.
How are you doing, Otlan? I am getting ready for my classes. On the other hand, this Thursday and Friday are religious holidays.
Ah, you are one of the old guard! I remember your name and your signature.
Welcome back, Cephis. The bar is open for you as always. Grab a drink, my treat :)
How are you doing?
Hello Cephis. I'm relatively older than Regen :DThank you. You are too kind. Would you eat chocolate bunnies, too? We have three different kinds. But I'm afraid, the kids want to get fat. ;)
Happy Easter, people. If anybody is scared of getting fat, I'll take those chocolate eggs off of your hands. I'm that nice a guy.
The milk is for the kittens, yes. For me, I just drank some cold. It's 29 degrees here.It is just 7 degrees here so I am going to drink my milk hot. With some aniseed flavoured sugar actually. The sun is really nice outside, not something to flee from.
*pokes head in*
I will be around starting today. I missed you all.Not sure how and if to ask politely, not meaning to be rude, only confused, so I just blurt it out:
Just to make sure it is justified to stay inside. I did that too. Minus the rain and the arctis. It is snowing!
It is snowing!
It melts as soon as it reaches the ground but....
Hello everyone! It snows and we had a nice walk in the sun. Strange weather but cold enough to make sauerkraut mash, time for comfort food.
GW presence made my day. He is indeed the same person, at some point on his life he forgot how to access his account, so he made a new one. Then I don't remember if he found the password or had it reset by the mods, but anyway, the two accounts are available.
I hope you know how happy I am to see you, GW (((((((((((GW)))))))))))))
Now, answer my mail or you will have to face an angry Dina. And you know, that may mean maggots.
Arjan, so cold! It's freezing my imagination.
Regen, my RPG was actually quite boring, as it mostly involved a shopping spree. I have a new armor and cloak, though and I look awesome.
Also, we had chocolate egg yesterday and it was great :). Actually we had two. One had pistacchio and a touch of sea salt. The other was dark chocolate. Yum and yum!
Arjan, what did you do??? There is snow here, too now! :oI did not sacrifice my ice cream to Mab! it is still in the fridge. I did not promise it either.
;)
Hey, there!Hey! Nice to meet you. I have been in and out for years. Always good to see new people join weird as we are a mercurial bunch.
Not sure how and if to ask politely, not meaning to be rude, only confused, so I just blurt it out:
Are you the same person?
@Dina:
How was RPG yesterday?
@all:
The daily Regenbogen weather comment in two words of same length:
****** Storm Front ****** :o
(OK, no inline skating or visiting rivers today. I'll just change that to 'lazy day')
Maybe I'm doing some reading today. I've started the Mercy Thompson series again. The first one was so long ago, it almost felt like a new book, lol.
:) But a good bunchThat is true as well ((((((DINASAUR)))))
I knew it ;DGreat!
I promise I'll write you later, probably much later, I am preparing some things for tomorrow.
I suggest hiring Captain Ron 8) - he knows how to handle Pirates of the CarribeanWhile that is a good choice. I have a name for the captain. Captain Thiago Seyboth Wild
I will add her to the list.
Also I am adding a cleric because none of these people have healing. or much at least. I was hoping to name her after you if you are ok with that? Dina the Cleric!
@Dina: I'm quite sure I'd have been too lazy to follow through on anything.LOL
LOLOh God.. . That's so... Me :D my mother used to look under my pillow, next to the bed, under the bed, in all text books and make sure i don't have any fantasy/fiction hidden while I was pretending to study. After that I'd open my school bag and take my pocket book out and have my fun xD
Me too, I'm afraid. I was the kind who hid fantasy books in school books to pretend I was learning. To imagine what I would have done, if no teacher watched me... :o
Were there 5 babies or more?Yes, she stopped at 5. And ofc I didn't carry the whole thing, my bucket is 18 liter, I filled it with 15 and took about 9 trips. Water is hard to carry.
Wow. 45L! Impressing. And a lot of water to carry.
A pocket flashlight under the blanket is a classic and worked well for me.Too easy to get caught in the summer, and makes reading very difficult. One hand to hold the blanket and the book up, another with the flashlight, cuts down on the options for a speedy escape.

I only used flashlights a few times. There was the escape problem mentioned by Fcrate, and it wasn't really good light, and my parents asked about all the missing batteries. And there was the danger of falling asleep and being caught in the morning with a flashlight in your bed. There was a window on the top of my bedroom door above eye level, you could not really look through is but you did see if there was light shining in the room so they only looked if there was light shining through when going upstairs, they slept in the attic. Hiding the light was the most important thing.
And it was too hot and bad air under the blanket.
These days mostly a movie with dinner, certain people though, are impossible to watch a movie with.Yes, me :)
I watched Family guy till season 9, and I like it. I especially like the music numbers that they make. Some episodes dragged on, but generally I liked it :DThat is what they call here “The sparrows fall dead from the roof”
Heatwave the last 3 days. 38°c here :/
((((((((GW)))))) Oh? Do tell? (you said your bday was an eventful one).(((((DINA))))))
So, how is the new place? :)
Yes, the premise of TWD was interesting, but for me it became old after a while. And I decided to take a break from zombies, so no Z-nation for me.The 12 monkeys show is good for 2 seasons and then it kind of loses its way
I liked the movie 12 monkeys but I was not interested in a show about it.
I don´t remember if I told you but I also began watching the new Kung-Fu. It's in CW, with a female lead. I saw two episodes and so far I liked it.
I am glad your new place is fine, and I hope you can enjoy it a lot now that days are becoming warmer for you. Also, it's fine about unpackaging, take your time. And find a good home for all those poor books.Aww its alright. Thank you (((((DINA))))) I had a decent day after so it ended up all right. Just chilling.
I am so sorry about your troubles on your birthday but I am glad you are not in Texas anymore (not because it's Texas but because it is not your home).
(((((((((GW))))))))))
Aww its alright. Thank you (((((DINA))))) I had a decent day after so it ended up all right. Just chilling.
So in my DND campaign I created a lava joust tournament where they had to pick rocks based on speed and strength. they had two points to spend between the two. The Speed would aid in attack and strength in not getting knocked out. Dina the Cleric made it past the first round with a fast rock!\Yay! Good for her! ;D
Mitochondrial DNA is fascinating. I really wish there were more opportunities for biological research that didn't involve academia and/or grad school. It would be so much fun.I did chemistry in the eighties in Leiden. It was not my speciality but I did some courses. It was one of the more demanding courses because of the enormous amount of facts, names and other things you had to learn by heart before you could even start understanding things in depth. The technology has improved by now but you needed a lab and infrastructure an a lot of time to do meaningful experiments and a lot of time with professionals to learn how to do it properly.
It's an analysis of mitochondrial DNA of the fly I work with. We made some general genetic analyses and proposed how that fly arrived at our country and how it spread over it.I don't know if its a thing in Argentina but in America, there is a common teaching joke that "mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell" its interesting because they made a baby with three parents where the kid got their mitochondrial DNA from a third parent.
And I am playing Pathfinder. My character is a really dangerous Swashbuckler (we began playing about two years ago. We are quite overpowered right now, so I am not kidding about my character being dangerous. She is also a very cute catfolk.)

More specific things I guess.
Forty years later if I want to know how science has progressed in this field I would just go to wikipedia and then read some popular science book.
It is really not worth it unless you spend loads of time and money on it and then you can better go to school.
I don't know if its a thing in Argentina but in America, there is a common teaching joke that "mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell" its interesting because they made a baby with three parents where the kid got their mitochondrial DNA from a third parent.Depends on the school and the subject. I learned so many details at university that my head could not contain them all thirty years later.
DC how are you doing?
I mean I have learned more random info from just curiously looking up stuff than I did in most science classes in school. More specific things I guess.
Depends on the school and the subject. I learned so many details at university that my head could not contain them all thirty years later.I never went to real college so maybe I would have learned so much more. I just read random non fiction books now and look stuff up.
If you want a global overview Wikipedia is wonderful. If you want to know more there are really wonderful popular science books. But for a really in depth study something not that wide nothing beats a good university.
I never went to real college so maybe I would have learned so much more. I just read random non fiction books now and look stuff up.Much more about much less probably. It is all very specialized.
Much more about much less probably. It is all very specialized. What did you major in?
What did you major in?Physical chemistry. I did a lot of measurements on extremely thin solutions of long big molecules. Viscosity and so on. As I said I forgot most of it because I became a programmer.
Gotcha. Missed that. Was there a specific thing that caused you to switch to programming or was it just something you enjoyed and turned into a career?I had no real programming experience at the time but I knew my math.
I had no real programming experience at the time but I knew my math. Its amazing how sometimes things just happen at the right time and change the trajectory of your life.
Just no job opportunities in chemistry at the time, far more graduates than new openings. The big companies like Philips were closing their labs.
And then came the IT boom in the nineties. If you had a good education in some other field so they thought you could do it you could get a course and on the job training. They were that desperate to get people. The rest is history.
Its amazing how sometimes things just happen at the right time and change the trajectory of your life.Hard work is not enough. You need some luck too. But it is no accident that my wife found a job at the same time. Along with a lot of people.
Mirror Mirror has garnered a lot more interest than Peace Talks in public appearances.
Jim is obviously working on a double release. Peace Talks has been in the can for some time now.
:P
Oh yeah,DON! apparently Biannual can mean either twice a year or every two years. Its confusing and wild.
and I would also like to take the opportunity to gloat a little..
I correctly called the double-release of Dresden Files books two years ago. :P I was thinking it would be Mirror Mirror coming out and not Battle Ground.
Oh yeah,Oh, wow. You saw the future there in a way.
and I would also like to take the opportunity to gloat a little..
I correctly called the double-release of Dresden Files books two years ago. :P I was thinking it would be Mirror Mirror coming out and not Battle Ground.
@GW:Sounds like you had an out of Body experience. So you are liking Swamp thing?
We watched Swamp Thing today and something weird happened. I fell asleep somewhere during episode 6 and woke up somewhere during episode 7. And I was confused, because I remembered the dialogue, music and other sounds from falling asleep. And then I saw the pictures including the sounds again after waking up. I mean, I heard the sounds twice. Once while being asleep and the second time including the visual. And I asked: did we watch the same episode twice? But we didn't. I'm confused now. So I'm going to bed.
I liked both new books, though I believe they suffered from the splitting. There seemed to be scenes included that were not necessary just to make each book longer and a book on it's own. In PT it was the feeling of a long prologue before the action finally started, though I liked the first chapters but it felt like he had several ideas how to begin and decided to just use all of them.
And BG had too much battle in it.
But this has been discussed in the spoiler section a lot, so I won't say anything about it any more.
This year has 4 book releases I'm interested in, and one of them is already out. The others will be in August, November and December, if I remember correctly.
The first was an Alpha&Omega book (Mercy Thompson Spin-off by Patricia Briggs), the others are Blood&Paper (not sure about the correct title) by Kevin Hearne, the next Outlander book by Diana Gabaldon and the last Alex Verus by Benedict Jacka.
I'm looking forward to those.
I never went to real college so maybe I would have learned so much more. I just read random non fiction books now and look stuff up.No, you made the right choice. College in the US is, more often than not, a well-structured Ponzi scheme at this point.
No, you made the right choice. College in the US is, more often than not, a well-structured Ponzi scheme at this point.Hey (((DC))) Didnt you go to college?
Hey (((DC))) Didnt you go to college?I did. For the most part, I regret it. The field I got my degree in is largely nonexistent without a masters or a PhD which I was lied to about from the beginning. I was never interested in grad school, which made that realization deeply frustrating.
I did. For the most part, I regret it. The field I got my degree in is largely nonexistent without a masters or a PhD which I was lied to about from the beginning. I was never interested in grad school, which made that realization deeply frustrating.I'm sorry to hear that. So what are you doing now?
I'm working at a grocery store until I can get into one of the many fields I should have gone into that will look at my resume and go "Why would I hire you?" before they toss it thanks to not having the degree they want.Well shoot, I'm sure you will find something. What fields are you trying to get into?
Well shoot, I'm sure you will find something. What fields are you trying to get into?I'd just like to get something with "engineer" in the title, given that I have an engineering degree. Though really at this point I'd settle for something that lets me rent my own apartment and have spending money on the side. A lofty goal, I know, but it's what I want.
Also what is Mayochup?

Though really at this point I'd settle for something that lets me rent my own apartment and have spending money on the side. A lofty goal, I know, but it's what I want.Keep your head up. You are a smart guy, it'll happen for you soon.
Mayochup is an abomination. It's a combination of ketchup and the worst condiment ever created: mayonnaise.
Oh, I am sure the book is good, it's just that in the first pages there is a lot of death and angst. I am sure it will be better, it just...I think I was not in the right mindset at the moment.I think I understand. I have stopped many books that way, most recently Rhythm of War by Brandan Sanderson
Hi people!I'd be more inclined to get a masters or phd if I hadn't heard horror stories from the people I know in grad school. There's also the money aspect, since I've been informed that your experience with both will be heavily dependent on funding, the lab I'm in etc etc (all of which I'm sure you're intimately familiar with. :P )
I am glad to see GW, Don and DC are here :) :) :) :)
DC, so, perhaps you should try for a master or Ph.D.?
Don, I'll answer your PM soon, I promise.
Regen, are you enjoying Swamp Thing, besides falling asleep in one episode?
GW, I bought Light of the Jedi. I even began reading it, only a few pages, but then I felt too sad and decided to take a break...and then life happened and I did not take it back. But I will, I am interested in the new approach to the High Republic.
Finally Raya and the last Dragon became available in my Disney+, so I watched it yesterday. I liked it!
Mayonnaise + ketchup is called Salsa Golf here, because one of our Nobel prize winners (we only have 5) invented it in a Golf Club. It is quite common a condiment here.
Keep your head up. You are a smart guy, it'll happen for you soon. It'll happen eventually, but the in-between is quite annoying.
I'm a fan of Siracha and Mayo. But that sounds horrible. Sirachha and ranch is my favorite combo tho.
Dina. I'm sorry to hear that you were sad. It really is a good book. The sequel, which feels very different in style is much better for character growth.
I've been meaning to watch Raya. I have heard great things about it.
I think I understand. I have stopped many books that way, most recently Rhythm of War by Brandan SandersonApparently a lot of people felt that way about RoW. I really liked the book, personally. It didn't feel too dark.
I rather am enjoying the Nevers. I'm torn between loving the main girls friendship and wanting to Ship them.

I'm gonna read it eventually because i loved the others, i just need a few books in between. I'll eventually hit a deadline of the next one coming out and knock it out in a weekend. I need a kick in the butt.
It'll happen eventually, but the in-between is quite annoying.

Hello?*Is it me you're looking for?* :D
No, you made the right choice. College in the US is, more often than not, a well-structured Ponzi scheme at this point.I have heard about that and it is sad. There are a lot of places on earth where good education is organized by the state and not that expensive or even free and a minimum quality is maintained. Wasting your time and money on bad education does not help anyone.
I like Swamp Thing.I did not even try the Dutch translation. A good translator must be good in two languages and have good writing skills as well. They are underpaid and under appreciated so not all books get the attention they need.
I must admit, I have never read any book by Sanderson.
I've started the first Mistborn years ago, but it bored me in the first chapters, so I put it away for a later read that never came. Now it is on the shelf in the section for books that might be good to sell.
But I've heard and read that the books were good, so I can't bring myself to give it away yet. Maybe it's the translation again. The Dresden Files are really lame in translation, maybe this is what pushed me away.
I've found the first mistborn for 0,99€ in English. I'll give it a second try once I'm through with the 4th Mercy Thompson.
I have heard about that and it is sad. There are a lot of places on earth where good education is organized by the state and not that expensive or even free and a minimum quality is maintained. Wasting your time and money on bad education does not help anyone.Yes, here for example :)
I like Swamp Thing.I don't know that Mistborn is really a good starting point for Sanderson. It's a series that gets significantly better on rereads when you can connect the dots on stuff you learn earlier. Vin gets a lot more interesting as the story goes on but the early story does drag a bit.

I've found the first mistborn for 0,99€ in English. I'll give it a second try once I'm through with the 4th Mercy Thompson.
I don't know that Mistborn is really a good starting point for Sanderson. It's a series that gets significantly better on rereads when you can connect the dots on stuff you learn earlier. Vin gets a lot more interesting as the story goes on but the early story does drag a bit.I think this is an accurate assessment. It was actually the Wheel of Time series that got me into Sanderson. He breathed new life into the series making it funny and allowing the story to move forward again. He turned Egwene from one of my least fav characters to maybe my second fav. I loved her ending arc.
Listen, I don't mean to break your heart, only manage expectations. Did you hear the uproar last summer about it?
I've read The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss in German. I had the first book from a coworker and the second from the library. It was beautifully translated. Once the next book is out, I'm going to buy the others in English. I'm very excited to read the original. I'm a bit nerdy about how a story is written. And I love authors who can use their words in artful ways, if you know what I mean.
Listen, I don't mean to break your heart, only manage expectations. Did you hear the uproar last summer about it?Well, I didn't, but I decided 4 years ago that it's a bust and stopped looking for a release date. I assume it's not coming?

I looked for more of his books after that.
OK, thank you. Where would you suggest I start?I also started with Mistborn, and while I loved it, I agree it's not a good starting point. Gets a bit confusing. Sanderson has regular books, and Cosmere books, Mistborn is Cosmere. The Cosmere books are all related to one extent or another, they all happen in the same universe, albeit in different planets. I would suggest starting with "The Emperor's Soul" novella. It's a little different but it explains the fundamentals of the magic systems nicely. Personally I loved this book. Follow it by "Elantris" which happens on the same planet but on a different continent and time. If you're still interested after that, go for "The Stormlight Archive" series, books one and two. After THAT you can read Mistborn. If you manage that you'll probably end up reading everything Cosmere.

Elantris suffers very strongly from "First book syndrome" in that basically every other book he's written is better than it. I think Warbreaker and the Emperor's Soul are a good starting point for the cosmere.
But I insulted her mentally. A lot.LOL
You may be right about Elantris, DC, but there are some good reasons for reading it in that order. Most of them are tldr, but one is that if you read it later, it's as horrible as eating an apple after a chocolate cake :DThat's fair. I picked up Elantris from the local library after reading the Stormlight Archives, Warbreaker, and Mistborn era 1. I was...less than impressed, let's say, but you have a good point about maybe needing to read it first. :P
May the 4th be with you!Oh no I hope they get better soon.
I am well, thank you, but I am worried because several persons I know are with Covid (with a different degree of seriousness). Also, I have my classes in a while, so I am doing last minute preparations, but I wanted to say hello. And thanks for writing Snowy! Please send her my regards if you can.
Sorry about the double post. I wanted to comment that I tried the Tajin dressing tonight. It's a Mexican mix of peppers, salt and lemon. Sometimes it is written Tahin which is confusing, because Tahini or Tahine is an Arabian sauce, not similar at all. Anyways, tajin is delicious. I even took a shot of tequila and had the border of the small shot laced with tajin. Really tasty.Sounds very interesting, I think im going to track it down to try it.
Hah Dina! You beat me to this one :D May the 4th be with you too.Try to stay cool my friend.
It's extremely hot here these days. 40-44 °C. My pool is getting a workout.
I am well, thank you, but I am worried because several persons I know are with Covid (with a different degree of seriousness).Oh, that's sad. I hope they'll be better soon.
May the 4th be with you!Facepalm! LOL. It took me a while to get that!
It's extremely hot here these days. 40-44 °C. My pool is getting a workout.:o OMG that's really hot. Enjoy your pool!
Also, how is Neverending Story going? She has finished the audio book. She liked it, though she was afraid of the Gmork. I can understand that. He was in a lot of my nightmares, too, when I was her age.
I didn't know about Star Wars Day. Now I do. Thanks. ;)You are welcome, nerds should help each other :)
I reread BG over the past couple of days. It's a hard book to read. Lots of bad shit happens. My condolences. ;)
I don't do audiobooks, my oral EnglishSays the person who knows 5 languages. You genius.is not that goodsucks. Also, I want to read "light of the jedi" first. I am rather busy though.
I think I will reread the series the moment the release date of the next book happens.Amazing memory! To be honest I have not used the Klingon in too many times, I cannot mention it anymore. But I did take a few classes of it. The other language is probably Latin, which I've learnt at school. And I don't "talk" it but I can read and analyze it (more or less).
Says the person who knows 5 languages. You genius.
Spanish, English, French, Klingon, I do not remember the last one.
Here tv programs are subtitled and not dubbed so we are exposed to spoken English from an early age. I almost never look at the subtitles anymore.
I have a weird relationship with Lovecraft. I am not a horror stories person and so I did not like too much what I've read by him. But I enjoy some aspects of his universe, I liked Lovecraft Country and I like to play tabletop games set on his universe. It is not exactly an audiobook but a radio play adaption placed in the current time in England, in some ways it is better to handle than the original. A retelling. It is also with different actors with different voices.
That said, I suppose I can try some audiobooks. There are some free or very cheap options. Many years ago, I used an "audible" promotion to download Storm Front. I got bored about page 2 and even having reread the book several times. I did not understand enough to hold my interest.
I'm doing great thanks. You? I think your team will do much better than expected. People have a way of out preforming their standards when their backs are to the wall.
Hah, the benefits of online learning. Let me guess. Pijama bottoms? :DLOL
Hah, the benefits of online learning. Let me guess. Pijama bottoms? :DActually yes :)
LOL! Well, yes. I also had to go to the grocery stores and things like that, you know? And yes, I am dressed for my classes. And with this piece of news, the hearts of hundreds of students were broken.. . ;D
Today is a sad day. The father of a friend died from COVID (he has been in the hospital for a few weeks). And I read a mail about a former colleague of mine, who has passed away too. He was retired, so I haven't seen him in a few years, but still it is very sad to hear that. He was a good colleague, I respected him and liked him. He has been a TA when I was a student. :'(How sad. I'm feeling with you. Sorry for your loss.
Good maen too !!!Sounds like you have a good weekend planned. I'm going to a cook out tomorrow.
I'm fine. How are you?
It finally feels like spring outside! Yay!
I'm making some muffins for tomorrow. We want to do a picknick in the forest.
Maybe we will visit the zoo on Monday, but not sure. Maybe do something else, now that they are slowly reopening.
((((((GW))))))) Have fun!Thank you! ((((DINA)))) I'm glad you can finally relax. I'm hope you have a good weekend.
(((((Regen)))) Have fun too! That sounds so good, mixing a nice forest with the technology of the cellphone. And I love picknics. Please, tell us how it goes.
London? Have you planned a vacation? Well, it will be fine, London will still be here.
I finally can relax a little after the exam, it was difficult to make the exam and grade it.
@GWJust created a classics category after realizing how many there were. Also I have split up authors if they have books in different genres.
weird books LOL.
Nice system.
I have to admit, I don't have a system, not really. My books are organized more in the categorys:
-Read only one time, but keep here
-Plan to read again
-Read several times and will read again
And same author of course ;)
Regen, such amazing plans. Hopefully next year.I loved the Good Omens show. Tennent was amazing. The overall feel was great. Such a great adaptation. I think I should do a rewatch here soon.
I've spent my birthday in London in 2017. It is a big deal because it's very far from here.
GW, I love your categories, specially Weird books.
My books are mostly organized by collections or more or less genre, but they are also organized by "enough space to put similar books together". That s why I have 3 World of Warcraft books (hubby's. I have not read them) adjacent to the 13 "A series of unfortunate events" books. Of course. Dresden Books are all together.
I don't remember if we talked about this, GW, but I loved the Good Omens show.
LOLWell that sounds like his problem lol. As long as it makes sense to one of you lol.
I almost drove my husband insane, because I categorized our collective CD collection into genres. Each category was in itself in alphabetical order and I even labelled the categories. He wasn't able to find anything, which I couldn't understand. He didn't understand my system.
Good Omens was amazing.I need to watch that still. I kind of forgot that was still going.
We have watched Lucifer season 5 episodes 9-11 today.
Actually now I remember, in our old home I had themed bookshelves. Though mostly the themes changed in the shelf itself. For example there was one with encyclopedias, science and medicine books. And the same shelf contained young fantasy.Themes are fun. young fantasy of course belongs with those books because what is young fantasy but science not yet explained lol
Yes, books are everywhere here, not only in the shelves. Thank God for Kindle.I think I need two more book shelves.
We were aware Lucifer season 5B arrived to Netflix yesterday but we have not seen any of it yet. Soon, I guess. I really like the show, even when it is nothing that Gaiman's Lucifer in the comics.
Sorry, I have not read the Long Earth series. In fact, I had not heard about it.
We always need more shelves :DHonestly it kind of feels like if you dressed up a fantasy book in scifi clothes. It has a lot of fantasy tropes but it technically is scifi i guess. However the technology to cross worlds is based on a potato and they don't actually know how it works.
I agree about Lucifer and I loved the crossover!!
Is Long Earth fantasy?
And Happy birthday Regen, here you have a thread! https://www.paranetonline.com/index.php/topic,54276.0.html
Like Lord of Light? The wiki page calls it science fantasy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_of_LightI have never read that but it looks interesting. I think it leans more scifi than that though.
I have never read that but it looks interesting. I think it leans more scifi than that though.Zelazny was a major influence on Jim Butcher, especially the Amber series.
Zelazny was a major influence on Jim Butcher, especially the Amber series.Well its added to the list. Thank you.
Thank you. :)
Happy Birthday Regen
Zelazny was a major influence on Jim Butcher, especially the Amber series.I've heard that, but never read him either. Though the Amber chronicles are on my list of need-to-read books, too.
We finished Lucifer today. I liked it, though I found Chloe very un-Chloe-like. She appeared very insecure.
There will be a season 6 and this will be the last one.
We spent a wonderful day in the forest and successfully solved the case, lol. After that we drove to a nice playground for the kids, but didn't stay long. Then on the way back we ate ice cream in the small town where my husband works. That was weird, because there were a lot of people in my opinion.
I'm no longer used to so many people in one place.
I had lemon and dark chocolate ice cream.
It's a cute little town, so we stayed a while at the fountain in the middle of the market place. They even had a small maypole. Not the traditional big one painted in blue and white (the traditional erecting of the maypoles and the feasts have been forbidden due to covid restrictions), but an actual birch tree decorated like the small birches young men would erect for a loved one on the first of May.
Good luck, GW!! ((((((((((((((((GW))))))))))))))Congrats!! Which one did you get? I got the PFizer.
I received the first dose of the vaccine :D
Congrats!! Which one did you get? I got the PFizer.Pfizer. Me and my son both. Now waiting for the second dose.
Pfizer. Me and my son both. Now waiting for the second dose.Nice, I felt a little bit tired after but didnt really have any symptoms after my second shot. My Grandma and sister got Moderna.
Sputnik. A friend of mine told me that she got a high fever with the Sputnik, but so far hubby and I are fine (we got our shots yesterday). So far all is well, no marks in the arm and feeling well.Good to hear. I haven't heard of that one.
It's a Russian one. In my country we have several kinds. Astra-Zeneca, Sputnik, a Chinese one I don't remember the name, I don't think the Pfizer one is used. There has been some politics problems. As a huge space fan, I love the name of the one you got.
The government vaccinates according with what they have in any given moment.
As a huge space fan, I love the name of the one you got.LOL.
LOL.LOL See, now I can't unsee that.
And when I first heard AstraZeneca in the news, I thought they were talking about a car. The newest Opel model. The new successor of the Opel Astra! LOL
That car has an interesting look to be sure. I can't place how it makes me feel.Probably.
Probably. The show pushing daises would use it as a plot device Im sure.
With this colour you could drive trough a sunflower field without being seen.
LOL. I answered to your post before you edited. The colour is ugly
You could buy this car to start building an eccentric appearance. The more people think you are eccentric the more they just ignore the small things like you coming in late with mud on your shoes. Your cryptic comments about the missing person in the paper. Your insistence that the old dump should not be dug up for a condominium.Yes. That sounds reasonable. ;)
I love the name Sputnik too.
I saw that car Regen, I like the name of the color :D- But the color itself...wtf? I had a laugh.
Poor car.Goes well with my hair. ;)
Well, dark blue sounds very good and classy. Definitely not a wtf color.
That is a very cool thing to say :)Actually yes, I do have blue eyes. My whole family, except my mother and one of my cousins, their eyes are green.
Also, do you have blue eyes too? I know a lot of Germans do (I once had a discussion here with another German forumite, when I mentioned the stereotypical German. He was not very amused, but I was talking about two tourists with their backpacks and all that looked very German-like for me. I am not trying to be offensive.)
Blue hair? Nice. I have often thought of dyeing my hair but it really wouldn't work with my job.Green eyes. Cool. What's your job, if I may ask?
I also have green eyes.
Green eyes. Cool. What's your job, if I may ask?I'm a customer service engineer. My company has a rule against people who interact with customers having dyed hair. Even if all I really do is fix machines.
I work in a hospital laboratory. I could have neon orange hair and no one would care.
I'm a customer service engineer. My company has a rule against people who interact with customers having dyed hair. Even if all I really do is fix machines. So you can not even patch some early grey spots? Is that even legal?
Well, I don't feel like me with grey hair, so it's brown as ever. I rarely had other colors. Once, very black (because the dye was the wrong color). Once lighter (experimenting). I did have a few touches of red or purple (not at the same time). And a couple of times I used color chalks for hair, only for fun. That is logical. My wife has a few grey strikes and the hairdresser takes care of that but she takes care to keep her original color more or less. But those grey patches to not fit into her self image I suppose.
I have ideas, ideas, ideas!!!!!!
I just built a third book case. Now that I have three I was thinking of giving them names as if they were estates. I don't want to just name them by the types of books on them or at least name them directly that. Do you folks have any suggestions?
I have ideas, ideas, ideas!!!!!!I love naming one Samwise. It has history, and I'll pick the one Ive had the longest to denote loyalty.
What about: Samwise, Great A'Tuin and Bene Gesserit
I love naming one Samwise. It has history, and I'll pick the one Ive had the longest to denote loyalty.Disk world and Dune
The second one seems familiar but I cant place it. The last one is not coming to mind at all.
((((((Otlan)))))) I hope you are doing well.
GW, those look wonderful! What is Chapa'ai? And I have to admit I love Samwise, looks so elegant.
Arjan, I LOLed. And I definitely can relate. Most of my shelves have actually two rows of books (the shorter ones in the front so you can see the taller books behind them).
Congrats on the puppies!
So I think I am gonna name the 3 I currently have as follows (I will probably need a fourth soon though):
Samwise

Chappa'ai

Oops. I see I have to bring that in order some time, once my husband won't have to work there any more.(http://IMG_20210606_130720_029.jpg)Oh, I did not even show my study. ;D
GW, those look wonderful! What is Chapa'ai? And I have to admit I love Samwise, looks so elegant.Thank you! The Chapa'ai is the name the enemy and their minions in Stargate call the Stargate. I always liked it.
*Huggles tight back* Hey Dina n_n <3 !! Ehhh, yes and no -_- . I'll tell you more when I'm more Coherent.Hey Otlan!!!
Meanwhile, has any of you watched "The bad batch"? The new Star Wars animated show? I am enjoying it so far.I like it. As a huge Clone Wars fan, this gives me extra content I have been desperately wanting.
Very impressive. On top of Samwise left and right, those aren't real books, are they? Only those in the middle. At first look, I was almost fooled.Yeah, I love it. They are cool little bookends with compartments. I haven't put anything in them yet, still thinking about it. My cousin who is one of my closest friends got it for me for Christmas! :)
And what a waste of space! I see wall not covered with books! (4 more upstairs and we still have to sort them out. No time)Nice Book shelf. I am trying to leave room for expansion. :)
Oops. I see I have to bring that in order some time, once my husband won't have to work there any more.(http://IMG_20210606_130720_029.jpg)I'm way behind the curve on my book shelves wow. :)
I'm not sure how far you got in the Clone Wars but it does get better as the show goes on. I loved rebels and Mandalorian as well.I am not sure either, I actually don't remember. I never liked it too much.
I may give the Tangled show a watch.
I am not sure either, I actually don't remember. I never liked it too much.Fair enough. Ashoka became one of my favorite characters in star wars but its not for everyone.
And about Tangled, I regret nothing.
Sorry, don't let him do that. Every generation has good people and good things and things that they are not proud of. Don't worry. You know, it wasn't so much him saying our generation was bad so much as showing the things our generation faces and how anxious we are about everything. I thought he was much older than me but he is less than 2 years my senior.
Another note, Loki was fantasticI have it in my Disney+, but I had no time to watch it yet. I will probably do it tonight. I love Loki even when I was not happy with what happened with him in the movies. So hopefully the show makes me happier.
Yes, i was very glad about the fact that they were not medicine-happy.I think they are really trying to tell a good character story with this show. Which is great. I loved Wandavision for that exact reason.
I have it in my Disney+, but I had no time to watch it yet. I will probably do it tonight. I love Loki even when I was not happy with what happened with him in the movies. So hopefully the show makes me happier.
I am confused. Why is that unfortunate then? ???I figured they would find some superpower. But alas. I am only human.
Nah, you just fooled them. They didn't test you for awesomeness, or super heart or anything like that.(((DINA))) Thank you.
I am so glad to hear about your results :D
Sorry about that but it only enhances my idea that it was ok to have a time off the doctors.I'm just being a complainer. Other than the concussions I probably got from being tall on a submarine, I got out physically mostly unscathed.
Awww, puppy. I am sorry you are feeling so poorly but I am hoping you find someone to help you. Depression is sadly very common these days, specially with pandemics, isolating and all the economic losses pandemics brought. About head shrinks, do you know that my country is said to have the highest shrink/population rate on the world? It was even a joke when I was a child. Many people I know are on therapy, at some point it was "cool". I don't know if the ciphers are still sound but even if we were not still in the first place, we still have a lot of psychologists.
I always remember a personal story. Many years ago (not so long after my dad died) I was having some strange feelings in my legs. I began seeing doctors and one of them sent me to a psychiatrist to see if it was all in my head. The man asked me a few questions, learnt about my dad (my mom had died years before and I have no siblings) and he made me a few tests where I was alone with an computer, answering questions. Well, when the results came, the doctor told me "Well, surprisingly, you are not depressed." I actually laughed at that. But seriously, he told me that I was sad but not depressed. (in short, it turned out that my leg feelings were due to an herniated disc which was apparently affecting a nerve or something. It got much better). But most people consulting him were actually depressed (or an early stages on it) so he was surprised I was not.
Now, on lighter things I knew you had internet now and that made me real happy. And now you have a computer too. Have fun on Steam! :D
You know, I used to work at a grocery store and the public just isnt fun to deal with so I completely understand.
I am sorry, Otlan. And I am not surprised, the same happened with a lot of companies all around the world.I loved Mitchells vs the Machines. It was so fun. I know I will watch it again by the end of this year
I began watching Sweet Tooth and, to be honest, I don't know how I feel about it (I only watched the first episode though). There is a post-apocalyptic setting (after a pandemics, as you could suspect) and a boom of babies born with animal traits (hybrids). But the story is about a sweet boy-Bambi and it seems to be...too hopeful for the situation. It's like the series is trying to tell a Fairy tale on a post-apocalyptic environment. So...beyond weird.
Did I tell you I watched "The Mitchells vs the machines"'? It's an animated movie. The story itself is not that great but I loved the movie, it was very fun :D
Well, I imagine that was a few years ago too. Things have gotten a LOT worse since then, especially with this damn Pandemic -_- . It's not just the Customers either. The company I work for showed they're True Colors during this Nightmare, showing us how much they "Appreciate" us as employees -_- .Yeah I can only imagine. I've seen videos of people talking about it and you have my utmost sympathies. I hope you find a job where they appreciate you for real. Not for show.
((((GW)))((((DINA)))) Please let me know what you think.
I still watched only one episode of Sweet Tooth, so I remain on the fence. I am so glad you liked "The Mitchells..." though. I was not too interested when I saw it appeared in Netflix but then a friend of mine told me she loved it. So I decided to try it and did not regret it.
LOL! It seems it is a common affliction, many of us are loaded with the same illness.Aww, that's cute. I imagine in your class you do things like that a lot. Always fun to make those connections.
In my class today we discussed an old paper with data on red deer. I couldn't stop thinking in Sweet Tooth and his adorable antlers :)
I watched it too! :)ooh. The 1910-20s. I'm not sure what it was like there but very interesting here.
I am quite tired actually, because of my class and then going to laundromat and grocery store, and it is quite cold so I was in a hurry to be back in my warm home. But other than that, I am fine. I was watching something on tv, though. It's an online course of Argentinian history (the class I was watching was about the 1910-20's.
Of course it was.Wow, that's pretty interesting. I have never thought about how the focused industry in the US during the War might have affected other countries not even involved in it.
Well, we were neutral in the War, mainly because UK wanted to keep buying our products without our ships risking to be sink. I mean, as we were neutral, we could sell to both sides, and UK preferred to keep buying our things instead of having our help (we did not have many weapons or soldiers to offer) and making our ships legit targets.
Besides, as Europe and USA were busy they did not sell us manufactured products. That was a significant change for us, as some of our industries were stopped because of the lack of supplies, but on the other hand, some people began producing things that were not produced here before.
But beside of that, we had a lot of inner problems, The worst was 1919, with terrible strikes that resulted in MORE THAN A THOUSAND deaths.
One of the best things, though, was the University Reform, in 1918.
Yes, to be honest at the time we were not too affected for what happened in USA as we were not trading a lot with you. But most of our commerce was with UK, so that affected us.Sometimes I forget that non fiction exists. I need to add more non fiction to my reading lists.
The 20's were very interesting from an artistic point of view though, specially literature and theater.
Also, those were the years were we funded the bases of our petrol. Our petrol company was the first in the world to be from the government instead of private.
Wow, that's pretty interesting. I have never thought about how the focused industry in the US during the War might have affected other countries not even involved in it.
What did the University Reform do?
I am watching baseball right now myself.
Wow. Way to go for those students. They fought hard and got change. Nice. I'm glad they got the push forward to make college available and affordable.
night ((((((DINA)))))))
If you read a lot of history you will recognize where some writers get their stuff from.
((((((((GW)))))))))The bad batch episode was heart breaking. I don't think I've heard of Wish Dragon.
I've been doing well, working and preparing classes. I also read a couple of things, and I kept watching SW: Bad Batch and the Arrowverse shows. I also watched "Wish Dragon", which IMHO is quite a rip off of Aladdin but in a modern setting. It was sweet though, heartwarming.
Sort of epilogue or something like that? I often feel that books need a better closure.Yes, It needed an epilogue to answer some of the questions that it gave me a burning need of the answer to.
Wish dragon is an animated film that suddenly popped up in my Netflix. Instead of a Genie, it has a dragon which granted wishes.
A dragon that grants wishes. I might have to check it out,It's not Dragon Ball, mind you :D
Yes, It needed an epilogue to answer some of the questions that it gave me a burning need of the answer to.It often happens to me. The most frustrating example for me was Harry Potter. After so many years waiting for the final book, the ending felt hurried and the epilogue was not enough. I needed some closure for all the deaths. I wanted to know more about what happened after the battle, not 19 years later.
It's not Dragon Ball, mind you :DNot Dragon Ball? Then why bother lol

Yes, I completely agree.(((((DINA)))))
In my mind, when he got tired of being an auror he went to teach DADA, but the curse was long gone, having finished after the war.
I even imagine that when Harry is old he will be the Headmaster :)
It's cold here today, and grey, so I just had a soup. I don't know why Knorr has decided to test some new flavors with a sort of "organic" look. For instance, we already had a tomato and basil soup, but now it also has amaranth seeds.
Thank you :) She's much better now, resting comfortably and no more convulsions, but still not eating, she only drank some milk, but nowhere near enough.I hope she will eat soon. But she has the name of a goddess, so she will be fine.
@Regen: Yes, Athena.
Sorry about the double post. That's amazing! Happy late Independence Day! Also happy late Independence Day for the US-people!
It's Independence Day here :) (so, National Holiday)
Following the tradition, we had hot chocolate with churros, and we are planning to have empanadas for dinner. I was going to make them but it is actually to hot and I don't want to turn on the fires, so we will have delivery :)
Good day weird,Hi! How are you?
I hope you are doing well.
Been crazy busy with work this week.
That's amazing! Happy late Independence Day! Also happy late Independence Day for the US-people!
Yummy! Did you make the churros yourself? If you did, would you share your recipe? 8) ;D I'm thinking of making some this week.
It was hot? Is it spring time already?
We've had a lot of rainy storms in the last weeks and in between some hot days.
I've been having severe headaches because of the constant change in the weather and because I still suffer from jet lag due to the nightshift week. I think it's the age. LOL
Next week I'll try to convince some colleagues to divide the 7 nights into 4 and 3. I hope to get the boss on my side, because I planned it out completely so that nobody has a disadvantage and so that it would be completely voluntary to join the 4/3 group or to keep the 7 or even to do both. It would be enough to convince the boss and 3-4 people, so there would be enough people to cover the week at least most of the time.
And if nobody agrees, I'll simply try again later. As long until we do it. LOL
Did work sometimes. You just have to be patient.
Hi! No, we bought the churros. You know, I did churros several times as a child but I had never done so as an adult. In fact, I lost the device we had (which was for shaping the churros). I am sure you can find some recipes online, though. We Argentinians like our churros, but they are a little thicker than the Spanish ones, and when we bought them, they are often filled with something, generally dulce de leche.Ah, I wondered. "Hot" like "too warm for the season", not like "unbearable heat".
It is not Spring at all! We are in the heart of Winter, so to speak, but yesterday it was too hot (23°C) and even today we had some barmy 18. I suppose it is globar change :'(
The idea of the 7 nights division sounds very good, I hope you succeed with it! :)
Good maen everyone!Thank you for your concern. I'm OK. The worst is in the west. I am in contact with a friend who lives there and donating money for the people in the area. She and her husband are taking food and clean water to the victims.
Regen, I've heard there are strong storms in Germany. Is your area all right?
Indeed. Some specific reason for that comment=I got called a narcissist for making a dumb joke that didn't land. Which...is just beyond reason, if I'm being honest. There's a totally reasonable range of responses to that and that's not it.
Also... (((((((((((((((((DC)))))))))))))))))))))!! :) :) :)
:D Well, perhaps that person has their own issues and that is why they understood that. Again, hopefully you will talk and solve the problem.Yeah I dunno. I'm doing pretty well, all things considered. Work is kind of boring me out of my mind lately but that's a bit to be expected. I'm asking for a vacation in a couple of weeks and I have a couple of interviews lined up soon so that's nice.
How are you doing otherwise, DC? It has been ages since I saw you.
Hi! How are you?Good thank you. How about you?
Good maen everyone!((((((DINA)))))) GO ARGENTINA!!!
I am doing fine, GW but I am leaving because I have a match to watch. I just wanted to say hello because I saw you online. ((((((GW)))))))
Good Evening weirdGood maen!!!!
DC Good luck on your interviews!
Good thank you. How about you?
How is everyone doing in the Shov? All 12 fingers and toes?
"But only to be able to help the kids, should they fail to get out or to find every station."Yeah, of course. As responsible adults we had to make sure to be outside the labyrinth before the kids, otherwise how could we help them? ;)
Uh-huh. Just for that. A likely story.
I am glad you and your little one had fun! :)
And it is good that the weather had been good and you were able to do that visit. I am sure your girl was super excited.
Haha, Google is the new big brother. Facebook is maybeI read this book by cory doctorow called Little Brother soo....
...middle brother? :D
Besides football, of course, I think my favorite are the artistic things. Gym, swim, skate, it the more artistic versions.I'm a big fan of swimming events in the summer. Watching people do the high jump always makes me feel good, its like the the very first space race. :)
.Have you seen the Kitty Norville series? I'm not sure if I loved it, but i devoured all 14 books.
Jacka has finished the last Verus novel. It will be out in late November or early December depending on the version you buy.
Edit: ...and there is a good short story or novella called "Favours" from Sonder's POV. Currently he is working on a new series. Something different, but it will be urban fantasy, too.
I actually been watching some Olympics. It will probably be our worst performance is a long time but it's all right. I admit being sad for Paula Pareto, our judoka. She is finishing her career, a wonderful one. She got gold in the last Olympics, but this year she will be back empty hands. Still, I saw her smile when she congratulated her winning rival, and she was delightful. As far as I can tell, she is a great, kind person. A doctor too, and she has been quite busy since the pandemics started.Thats really good sportsmanship of her. Simone biles is just unmatched in her field.
I saw some beautiful artistics, Simone Biles and things like that, but I did not do it in an "organized" way, just let the TV on a sports channel.
Awesome DC (I mean, the interviews) and I hope you have fun with your vacation. Do you have any plans for it?I'm probably going to take a trip to a big city to see some friends who live down there. Other than that I'm going to enjoy the time off.
Have you seen the Kitty Norville series? I'm not sure if I loved it, but i devoured all 14 books.
We did the final exams today, to three students. The grades were 8, 9, 10. I am happy :)@Dina: Congratulations to your students.
Random comment: I remember having been taught at school how Henry Ford was a very efficient, if cold, businessman. They never taught us how much of an anti-jew he was. Just an example of how teaching history can change the socially accepted narrative.
I actually liked Brave New World. Not only because of the idea of cloning (which always interested me) but because of the "training" (not only because of Pavlovian conditioning but also as a social process to keep people happy with their lives). It was mainly a trigger for me for thinking some things. But the thing I was more interested was precisely which explained the name of the book. How enough social change can make old literature impossible to understand (even basic ideas like maternal love).I enjoyed Brave new world for the concepts not really the story. The idea of worshiping Ford was really interesting to me. The concept rocked.
I wouldn't say I love the writing, but the ideas were very interesting.
Oh, great news, GW! It is good to know your friend values you so much.Thank you Dina. I'm definitely going to remember the rings. I need to make a list of things a Best Man is responsible for. I'm sure one exists.
I am sure you will create amazing memories. And you will probably look very smart too :)
Just don't forget the rings.
Oh, I bet there is a list.Thats a great idea. I know a guy who has been best man 4 times.
You probably should ask someone who had done the job already. Besides knowing the list, they will probably have tips.
Ah, I know you like musicals very much. Thanks for the recommendation!!! I will look for it.
We have some musicals, Broadway-style, especially for a man called Angel Mahler. If you can find his "Dracula", I think you may like it.
Have you seen the Kitty Norville series? I'm not sure if I loved it, but i devoured all 14 books.Thank you. I didn't know it. Always glad of new recommendations.
Well, the Olympic Games are over, the first ones without public in the stadiums. They were good (not for Argentina, who has a poor presentation, but at least we had silver in female hockey (our "leonas" are good) and bronze in Rugby 7 and male volleyball. Those were quite interesting, as we were not the favorites. Our men put a lot of effort and heart, so I am proud. I also proud of some people who did really good considering our story, for instance, a 7th position in team equestry, or the 31 and 53 position in marathon (male) and a 60 something for our female representative.I don't remember who they were facing but I watched an Argentina Rugby game. It was fun to watch.
So, it was not as bad as I expected, hopefully Paris 2024 will be better.
Thank you. I didn't know it. Always glad of new recommendations.Hey Regen. I'm doing good. Just sort of chilling and stuff. How are you?
I think I might try them some day.
I didn't have time to watch the Olympics this year, I just read some news about it and saw a few seconds every now and then.
(((((((DC))))))))It's less about whether or not I expected them to change and more about whether or not I would get a mental reset and be able to deal with it for longer. Burnout is fun.
I am so glad you had fun!
And about your coworkers, you really did not expect them to change, did you? I hope you can find a way to cope with that, perhaps speaking with them so they change...or just having more patience :'(
It's less about whether or not I expected them to change and more about whether or not I would get a mental reset and be able to deal with it for longer. Burnout is fun.
Bad coworkers are a pain in the derrière.So, the main issue is that store leadership is not interested in doing anything about it. They're lazy but they show up for their shifts and are apparently better than the unknowns and costs of a new hire. No point in management writing them up if nothing is going to be done about it, right? Our current store leader is retiring in two weeks though so I'm sort of hoping if I have to stay here much longer the new store leader will do something about it.
Can you tell, what it is, that's so bad about them? Sometimes it helps to say it aloud or write it down.
Are they lazy?
Do they work against you or against each other?
Is it all of them or are there exceptions?
Sometimes it is enough that there are one or two arseholes and the rest is to scared to say or do anything and some join them in doing arseholy things just to be on their good side.
Did you ever talk about the problems?
Does anyone talk about the problems?
What needs to be changed?
Sometimes it gets a bit better just to honestly say something about the situation and one's feelings about it with everyone present. That tells them "We see you. We know who you are. We see what you do. We have been nice about it before, but there is a line that has been crossed and we won't tolerate that any more." No need to say any names. The ones you mean will know it is them.
I've done that. I said I had enough. I told them we don't have to like each other, but I want people I can trust with work related stuff. We don't have to see each other in private. But would you please behave like adults and just do your job.
After that I thought now I am persona non grata until one if us leaves. And they do look at me with other eyes now. More careful. As if they were afraid to piss me off. And they should be. To be honest, I'm done with being pushed around. And I made that clear.
They are still bullying others but not when they think I might see or hear about that. And I did tell them, that everyone talked to me. EVERYONE!
I never used a threatening voice or said it in threatening words. But I think they understood how angry I was.
It's just two or three out of 20, but they can ruin the whole atmosphere.
I think they were impressed, because I didn't say something for myself but for two others I noticed have been bullied for a long time. And as long as no one says anything they do whatever they want with you, because they can.
I don't need them to like me. They can even hate me. I don't care, as long as they keep their personal stuff out of work. And I do the same.
I want to cite an old woman I had a talk about arrogant people. Those who try to make you feel inferior, because they supposedly have a better life, a better job, more money, are more beautiful, raise their kids better and so on. Everyone knows such people.
The woman told me: "I don't feel inferior anymore. I told myself, that I am somebody, too."
And she was right. Everyone is somebody. If you feel the need to look down on others, then I pity you. Then you don't understand that the person you are looking down at is somebody, too. Just somebody else.
Oh, yeah. Damn I haven't had that in 3 years. I basically gave up all fried foods since I decided to lose some weight. Might be time to try it again, now that you've reminded me :DEven when I admit that they are better fried, I actually made them in the oven. They are healthier that way (and it is cleaner). We sometimes had the fried version delivered to us, but when I cook I generally do them in the oven.
So an update on the whole coworker thing: it won't be a problem for much longer because I've decided I'm quitting to avoid burnout((((((((((DC))))))))) That may be for the best! I hope that you can find some rest and find a better job later. Keep us posted.
Regen! I am so glad you and your family are enjoying yourselves! Are you in Vienna? (I always wanted to see Schönbrunn, I've read so many Sissi stories). Also, I wanted to go to a bar there. Salzburg, with the Sound of Music fountain and all that? Sorry, I got excited imagining Austria.LOL (the link)
I imagined for a German, Austria is not so different. But for me, both Austria and Germany are so completely foreign, so different!
The other day I was laughing at this:

LOL (the link)Vegetable and pine cone baths? Did you try them?
Hi, Dina!
Actually I am here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gmunden
Today we are leaving. It's only a 3½ hours drive from home by car. Assuming one doesn't have to stop or there is no traffic jam.
We'll be having lunch first with family. After that we'll get on our way.
Vegetable and pine cone baths? Did you try them?LOL
LOLIt sounded weird to me yes. I had visions of people floating in vegetable soup 😊
No, I thought that might be a mistake by the author of the English text. I have never heard of those. They are not even mentioned in the German text. Maybe it means special treatments in a thermal bath, but there is none directly in the city. But in Bad Ischl, another city.
(https://i.imgur.com/yCfbhsP.jpg)Oh, that's cute! Thank you.
Mafalda: Poor Miguelito!
Mafalda's dad: What is wrong with him
Mafalda: Since the day he imagined the sea was a soup, he can't see it without feeling sick.
Mafalda: But...There he is! In the sea!...
Mafalda: Bravo, Miguelito! You took courage!
Miguelito: No, I took alka-seltzer.
:)
Well, Santa Rosa arrived today! So far, it is not so intense as other years, but it has been raining all day.... Yay?...
Excellent about duolingo! If you have any doubt with a lesson, you can ask me :)Thank you. I will do that. <3
@Manu: hey there. :)It is theft. Sometimes if the branch of the tree hangs over the public pavement it is not theft anymore but otherwise it is. But I suppose if you just catch them in your own garden you can use her logic and make a nice curry.
@Regen: she's selfish, and likes to feed her birds for free. She doesn't consider it theft.
The piece of land next to me is an orange grove, and she's consistently stealing from them. She'd take maybe 50 kg or so and sell them below market price for neighbours.
Arjan, you'd fit right in the Egyptian countryside. Who'd have thought? Lol.We have strict gun laws here. No rifles.
Same thought crossed my mind. They'd be difficult to catch, so I'll have my rifle ready.
We have strict gun laws here. No rifles.Same here, but this is an air rifle. My beloved Diana 54 Air King.
Same here, but this is an air rifle. My beloved Diana 54 Air King.LOL. Me too.
@Regen: I don't think I can deliver the message that well. Lol. I can manage a stone face, but fake sympathy always ends up with me laughing.
Good maen everyone!Oh, I did some boring reading, doing laundry, shopping in the supermarket, continued learning Spanish and started Japanese.
I love corn too!
Sadly, I am familiar with the feeling of only knowing who not to vote. Not lastly though. The last few elections I was sure who to vote for.
How was your day at home?
Japanese! Awesome! I only know a few words I've learnt from animé. Spanish speakers have an advantage when learning Japanese. Words in Japanese are pronounced the same way that they would be pronounced in Spanish. i mean, the letters' sound is the same in both languages. I have a few friends who studied some Japanese.Really? I don't hear similarities to Spanish. Yet. But I do hear similarities to English in the words for fork, and knife for example and the word for soup sounds almost like German. I don't build any sentences yet. I only know a few words. I could count to 5 before, because of karate, lol. But for now, I'm struggling with the writing. And it is a bit confusing also, because I have to do it as an English speaker, so if I don't concentrate enough, I answer in the wrong language.
I am sorry, I don't know what Hokkaido is.Oh, sorry, I didn't realize, it might be called differently. It's a sort of pumpkin, I like best. You can eat every part of it. Very tasty.
I am happy because yesterday we have a football (soccer) match for the qualifiers for the World Cup. We won 3-0 over Uruguay, but the best part was that they really played well. And with public back in the stadiums, this was good!Yay!!! Congratulations!
*waves back*I am waiting to hear back final word on three different jobs I've applied to in the past month, one of which I feel extremely good about because it seems like a good culture fit, the pay and work/life balance are good, and the interviewers went out of their way to compliment me multiple times during the interview. So hopefully I get that one.
That's understandable, but it was good for you to take that step. Now you can rid yourself from that mental load. It's over.
Any new job in sight, yet?

It's the new house pretty?I have not thought about that. At least it's form is not ugly. There is no façade yet and no windows.
I just realized it's been ages since I've posted here, so... Hello weird :DI have been worried for you. I am glad you posted :)
*One of the Tables creaks and tilts sideways as a hatch below it opens up, revealing a small, darken tunnel. From this tunnel, the top part of a head emerges. The Head is covered in thick black and filth covered fur, sporting a pair of pointed wolf ears. A pair of sunken and tired red eyes peer over the lip of the tunnel, seeing if anyone is around. Seeing now one, a severely emaciated werewolf, covered in grim, old wounds and scars, it's one thread bare robes now in tatters, pulls it's self free of the tunnel. It's head whips back and forth at the slightest sounds, looking like it's ready to bolt as it creeps it's way over to where the Food, Booze and Medical Supplies are stored. Once there, it proceeds to eat with ravenous abandon and try to drink it's self into a Coma, Spilling food and booze all over the place while also trying to treat it's wounds at the same time.*
I have been worried for you. I am glad you posted :)
*Dina founds the werewolf almost unconscious and begins tending of his wounds, even knowing that he will heal himself soon. She then covers him with a clean fuzzy blanket, pats gently his head, and sits on a chair to read a book while waiting for him to regain full awareness.*
*Dina raises slightly the temperature of the room and, after searching of her bag of holding, sprays some lavender perfume, knowing that it helps to sleep well*
*She is concerned, not for the physical injuries of the werewolf but because he went directly for the ooze. Never a good sign. So she keeps reading, waiting to see if when he wakes up, he wants to talk. She hopes he know friends are always ready to listen to him."
*Dina smiles and hugs him, taking care of not harming him while he is still minding. Then she makes hot cocoa for two*
I am not a psychiatrist, but I am pretty sure you are not crazy. I completely understand grief, the burden of carrying it around. Therapy is a great idea. Honestly? You sound depressed, but a psychologist will be able to diagnose you, and I think therapy will help you in any case.
I am so proud of you for speaking about it, and for reaching for help (first your sister and your friend). You are really brave and I hope you get better because I want you to be a happy puppy ((((((((((((((Otlan)))))))))))))
Fine, if you say so. *laughs* Just kidding.
Seriously, I am convinced that you are brave, because it is very hard to face our own insecurities (and even more to put them on words). And to ask for help? That is not easy either.
Well, let us know if you began therapy, please.
It is good to have you back :)
Speaking of other things, have you read "The Wheel of time"? I now that some JB fans did, but not me. I am thinking on watching the show (it will arrive soon to Amazon).
Oh, I have simply too many shows to watch, but I think I will try to watch it.
Superhero shows:
Supergirl and Black Lightning ended, but I still have a lot of Arrowverse shows (Flash, Batwoman, Superman & Lois, Legends of Tomorrow, Stargirl) not all them in the air in the same months. Also, Titans and Doom Patrol. All that covers my DC quota. I still need to watch half a season of Lucifer, by the way.
Then, there are all the Marvel shows. Too many, but short.
Besides that, Doctor Who began a new season. And I still have other sci-fi shows I would like to watch (Foundation, The Nevers, some others I don't remember).
Oh, and I watch some "ordinary" shows sometimes, like CSI:Vegas or Magnum. So yes, always a show waiting for me :)
And I am watching the miniseries about Maradona, the Argentinian football (soccer) player that was the best. 10 episodes and I already watched 7.

Wish you were here...
Is there anybody in here? Nod if you can hear me...

Thank you for the songs! I realized I needed music today.
Durin's Song quite moved me. I love TLOTR, though I didn't make it through the Silmarillion. It was well sung.
I think the Wellerman was a traditional Irish song before it became famous, wasn't it?
I don't usually listen to Eminem, though I'm always fascinated how many words he can pack into one second, lol.
I'm a bit exhausted, but I have got the weekend off, so I hope, I'll get enough sleep and energy to make it through the next week. Just one week after another.
But I've got some new books to look forward to. And maybe convince my husband to watch Wheel of Time. The past weeks I went to bed early because work is exhausting.
Oh, I'd love to see the old Perry Mason.
Never heard of this three: Gomer Pyle, Green Achers, Adam-12
I have more free time now, as I save like 3 hs in commuting. And I have weekends :)
*is hold*
Yay!! How are you today, Otlan! (let me read what you posted)
Edit: I agree about Eminem, I don't really listen to him or that kind of music, but his skills are undeniable.
((((((Otlan))))
I have not seen the video, but we know gurkhas very well, they came to the Malvinas (Falklands for the British) war. A sore subject for me.
Regen, I am sorry you were ill, and of course, super glad you are feeling better.
Not only that about the common cold, it is also restricted, because with all the precautions due to covid, there are less cold contagions too :)
How is the house's building going?
I don't know, I never had the stomach to read much about the war. It hurts too much. Our soldiers were badly nourished, with cold, many of them were very young. Some of them remember having being captured and British soldiers being appalled of their poor condition (and of course they ate much better as British prisoners, the British had a very professional, well provided army). All the public did donations for our soldiers, food, blankets, money, whatever. We gave what we could. I remember we donate several little gold chains or pins, even some of my baptism gifts and things like that. I was 9 at the time and I remember it pretty well. And when the War was over it was discovered that the government stole most of it, gave it to friends, sold it. Very few things arrived to the soldiers. Our government at the time was a dictatorship, and the president at the time was the third de facto president on a raw, and probably the most ineffectual of them. He went to the War to try to win the favor of the public, and it worked for a while. And after the war, it crashed. The dictatorship ended the following year.It is safer because it is not American politics.
On the UK, the war also served to win the favor of the public, but their government was a legitimate one. The success in the War secured the relection of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. And I think many British regretted it later.
Sorry, we are not supposed to talk politics here in the forum but I wanted to give you an idea of how things were. I think what I said was historically proven, or my own memories. But if someone gets offended I'll delete it.
On a happier note, we bought a chocolate liquor and we opened it today. Very yummy. it is from a chocolaterie, which (besides chocolates) sells really would ice creams (gelatto). We had never tried their liquor until today.
Oh yes, it was quite yummy :D The bottle is finished already (it was not too big anyway)The Christmas was up ten days ago but we just now finished the decorations.
My Christmas tree is up (since Dec. 8) and I am happy about it.
Regen, I am glad you have the week off, and also about you and yours spending the Christmas at your parents. You deserve some relax :)
Hubby and I will spend Christmas alone again.Besides the restrictions due to Covid, he is having some mobility problems so we are not traveling, and the people we usually spent Christmas with have similar problems too.
Hello weirders and weirdresses..<-----Doesn't that word sound like a futuristic dress? Now that I think about it, it's a word that describes seamstresses in the future, when they make a come back with some weird dresses. But I digress. How is everyone doing? I haven't had much time on my computer in the past couple of months, and as you all know, I hate typing on phones.I love weirdresses! And I am glad all is quiet in the eastern front :)
All quite on the eastern front :)
Hello people!Dina <3
I wanted to share with you some news about my life. Hubby is in the hospital (not COVID) and I am basically living with him.
The story is long and I am too tired of repeating it, so I will put here only a blurb. He has lynphedems (I think that is the name) which made his legs super inflamed and he has ulcers along all the legs, which are almost all the time pouring. This problem began months ago and was progressively worse until this Well, in short, he is on antibiotics and other healing measures, and he will be here for at least several days, until the worse of the problem recedes. And he will probably need a surgery too.
I...it is complicated, and I really do not to tell much more now. I just wanted to let you know that this is my current situation. We've been here since Monday and I will try to keep reading the forums because I miss you guys and I love the forums.
Take care of yourselves and Happy New Year!!
@Regen: Hi there. Are you frozen yet? My brother says it's very cold in Germany these days.Hi, Fcrate!
Who at Lysol counts all the germs to make sure that 999 out of every thousand is really dead?LOL I imagine some poor person sitting at the microscope for days and counting each death.
Who at Lysol counts all the germs to make sure that 999 out of every thousand is really dead?Dettol solved that problem in the arabic ad a few years ago, they just said "Dettol, eliminates 99 types of germs".
Oh yes, I remember you telling us about the change about elder gruff. How weird.Yes, others are polite to him, too. Even Morgan. Polite while insulting :D
Your daughter sounds like a child I like :). She will probably enjoy Harry. Oh, I call him "my" Harry too.
Your talk about the polite form made me wondering how Harry would be in Japanese. Also, I ask you. How is people WITH Harry? Are they polite with him? (I feel Harry disrespects people but too many people disrespects him back. It is not the case with Marcone though. He is a jerk and says hard things to Harry, but his manners are good.
Well, I mean...no one likes to be interrumpted when mating ;DLOL, I admit I was thinking the same.
thought I was making it up to pull a joke on her. My brother told me that I watched too many Looney Tunes before my siesta. xDLOL
If you own a Kindle you should download the sample from Heroic Hearts. International readers may not have the chance. I don't know.Works for iPhone/iPad as well. You get the complete story.
If you own a Kindle you should download the sample from Heroic Hearts. International readers may not have the chance. I don't know.Thank you.
I see it for 20.99 US. Why the disparity?
If you're a nerd, Regen, then you're in good company. That's why I feel so comfortable here. :)
How nice! Enjoy yourself!Thank you. We will do so. What is nice is that the temperature stays the same for a quite long period of time. At home we have fluctuations of 10-15 °C, sometimes from day to day or week to week. One can't get used to a certain temperature and this is what makes me dizzy. So I am enjoying the constant temperature, too.
@Regen:You should've spent your vacation here. Had 4 days of temperature of 40-44.very stable. My brain feels like a brecht egg.So glad your heat wave is over.
I had to spray the animals with water twice a day to cool them off. Three times yesterday (11:00, 12:30 and 2:00) but otherwise I finished everything before the temp reached 38.
Anyway, heatwave is over. Today is 33°C. :D
Oh good, it is finally cold! :oIt's really quite pleasant today. In my area, summer temp is 35-39. Only above 40 degrees is noteworthy.
Where I live three days above 30 Celsius is a heat wave. Officially.hah. My Dutch friends told me about a heatwave of 37 degrees maybe 8 years ago, they were dying.
So glad your heat wave is over.Well, if you work outside like I do, then it's standard procedure from March - September. Work from well before sunrise if possible, get back home at 10,lunch and siesta till 2-3 hours before sundown then finish anything left to do before sun down. If you're farming, irrigation starts at midnight. Which will save water and gas, as well as spare you a heatstroke. If you work indoors, then it's business as usual. In my town, if you walk the street at noon you'll rarely meet another person during a heatwave. And yes, it cools down at night. During the heatwave or was 24-29 at night. Other than that it's maybe 19 degrees.
What do people do, when it is that hot? Like you, get up really early, get some work done and then what? Siesta until evening?
And does it cool down at night?
Maybe one day I'll visit in winter, lol.
@Arjan: dito
hah. My Dutch friends told me about a heatwave of 37 degrees maybe 8 years ago, they were dying.Yes, horribly.
Um, let's put a lid on this discussion before the government accuses me of scaring potential tourists away and unpatriotism (is that a word?)Oh, but you definitely invited us to come by explaining the geographical specialties of your lovely country and it's inhabitants' weather induced daily live style. It is as important to know those as it is to know where to get the best food and drink. ;)
P.S. @government agents monitoring my data: I love Egypt, and I was just explaining to these foreigners that vacationing in Egypt in summer means free sauna 24/7.
True :D though the current government resembles an unsuccessful Uncle Scrooge.I mean compare that with Dubai, they only have shopping malls. And more shopping malls. And even more shopping malls. :)
I mean compare that with Dubai, they only have shopping malls. And more shopping malls. And even more shopping malls. :)True, they don't need to actually produce things to have money to spend. Lol
Oh, but you definitely invited us to come by explaining the geographical specialties of your lovely country and it's inhabitants' weather induced daily live style. It is as important to know those as it is to know where to get the best food and drink. ;)You should've been a lawyer. You're wasted in that lab. :D
I just came back from my first massage. One of the staff of the hamam told us, we were in need of a massage, and who am I to argue with that? The man was right. We decided to do it as a gift for our wedding anniversary, which is the day after tomorrow.
but it is something I offer, they do not ask me for it.Exactly. You're the one who's offering. Big difference :) Problem is, if you offer too often, almost everyone, even the most well-intentioned of people will take advantage of you to some degree or another.
Exactly. You're the one who's offering. Big difference :) Problem is, if you offer too often, almost everyone, even the most well-intentioned of people will take advantage of you to some degree or another.Yes, that's it. People taking advantage if your kindness. And there are some, who try to go further and ask you to do it.
Internal monologue will be like: "Oh, I'd like some coffee, but wait a few minutes, Dina will probably make some in a few minutes, and she'll offer to make me a cup."
Exactly. You're the one who's offering. Big difference :) Problem is, if you offer too often, almost everyone, even the most well-intentioned of people will take advantage of you to some degree or another. That may be true, but my coworkers are good people and they often do that themselves. Even my boss sometimes offers and make it himself. So it is really not a problem. Also, one of my coworkers makes it too strong, so sometimes I offer myself before she does, because I like mine better. :)
Internal monologue will be like: "Oh, I'd like some coffee, but wait a few minutes, Dina will probably make some in a few minutes, and she'll offer to make me a cup."
Exactly. You're the one who's offering. Big difference :) Problem is, if you offer too often, almost everyone, even the most well-intentioned of people will take advantage of you to some degree or another.Or people will start to follow the good example and start offering it too. You will earn a lot about other people that way.

I hate you optimistic types...LOL. I was thinking, what an utopian imagination.
@Regen: Or do it like an Egyptian before sunrise :D
I'm also quite surprised that:
1. You know how to use a scythe.
2. That you actually own one :D
I hate you optimistic types...It does not always work but sometimes it does. But I do remember. :)
@Arjan, some of them actually offer themselves. Which is fine, I began offering because I copied that person that taught me how to do the coffee. I still call her instructions "the <her name> protocol".Don't encourage him please. -.-
Yes, their live shows are amazing. :D and I thought it was firefly until a Dutch friend (who learned German because of Rammstein) corrected me.LOL
Sorry, I just had to share thisOh, cute dog! And how they try to pick him up. LOL
It is during a match of female football (soccer). The fun part is not only in the first minutes. I know you won't understand the voiceover but hopefully it is not needed.

He does have Messi's evading skills. :DThey use them to get from A to B, I guess. 8)
BTW, none of us who post here regularly are from the USA. Football is fine :D (though how does American Football have any relation to feet, I don't know.)
I love all those ideas!*Takes his shovel and starts to dig an extended trench for cover* :D
Water polo: football in a pool
golf: boring walking football (rich people's football)
I am glad you liked the dog, so cute. And Fcrate, I just realized you will see me for the first time in World Cup mode.
@Dina: Nothing says celebration like fried empanadas. :)LOL. Certainly not. There is only one toilet :o
@Regen: couldn't you make cider out of them? I'm making some today. Also Eleanor is always up for any amount of spoiled apples. :D
That would be number 8, Regen :DYes, after Gideon ;)
@Dina: 3 children don't justify a pattern. My grandmother used to chastise my uncle's wife for stopping after 4. (As the above joke hints, Egyptian mothers in law are horrible) :D
Nowadays it's rare for people to have more than three. Most everyone stops at 2, even though they start early. But that's an economy thing.Yeah, I told myself that a third child wouldn't be practical anyway. We would need a bigger car. Our bedroom downstairs would be too small for all the baby stuff. We moved downstairs so that each girl could have their own room. Luxury, I know, but we actually bought that house because there was this option. Before it became our bedroom, it was my husband's father's room, who was officially living with us. Though he spent most of his time with his girlfriend at her home, lol.
My parents had 5, but their generation was different.
You made the right decision though. Personally I believe 2 are enough. 3 at most, as we have to think about our planet.
Well, happy friendship day to you too :DRadishes and carrots and some stuff I don't remember what I put in there, lol. Doesn't matter, because the first leaves got eaten by the slugs, now it is too hot for slugs. The rest just didn't grow properly. That's when the radishes get the wrong shape and if you try to eat them it feels like wood. As if they were in there too long but they are extremely tiny.
I think I've mentioned before how much I dislike translations. Once my English improved enough that I didn't need the dictionary 10 times in every page (that was before Google), I switched to originals and never looked back.
Sorry about your veggies, Regen. But 36 isn't that hot.. What kind of veggies do you have?
Well, happy friendship day to you too :DFor a good literary translation you need someone who has mastered both languages and is a good writer as well. The pay you get does not match the skills needed. It is often done badly.

This I think is only a part of it.And that one borders poetry and poetry is even more impossible to translate.
But there is more to a good translation.
For example there are sometimes events or naming in a book, which the author knows will have meaning later, thus the exact wording he chose to lead to misinterpretation. Now there are several ways to translate that, depending on the language you are translating into, depending on words and phrases available in said language due to cultural and historical differences.
The translator can be perfect in both languages, can be an extremely skilled story teller, but still make a poor choice in translation, just because he is not the original author and does not know what is to come. Or that there is more to it, than it seems at first read.
Then there is the IMHO not unimportant fact, that one would not only translate works one can relate to or enjoy, but also stuff you think boring or bad writing. So your heart wouldn't be in it, so to speak.
Then there are words and phrases that sound good in one language, but weird in another. But you would want somehow to convey the feeling they produce without changing the meaning.
I tried that with some wordings I wasn't content with.
Like JB for example:
This only true for the DF, not Alera or Cinder Spires (I haven't read that yet).
He writes mostly like some dude telling his story with mostly simple word choice. Mostly I feels as if Harry was just sitting there with his beer and telling his story to a friend. But this is exactly the art in it. Sometimes his sentences are so minimalistic that you could not honestly call them sentences. But sometimes they are almost philosophical. Like the main person himself.
I tried to translate specific parts for myself and my friend who asked me about parts she wasn't sure if she understood the meaning.
It is easier with the long complicated sentences. But really hard with the short ones. Especially to create the intended feeling.
I can only remember two of them. But I can't look up the translation of the first one because the German book belongs to the library. It was in Proven Guilty, the elevator scene: "Stab. Twist."
I couldn't find a satisfying translation myself. What was done conveyed the meaning, one would not have noticed if one didn't know the original, but I remember, it was too many words.
The second one was in Changes, after he killed Susan.
I used the knife.
I saved the child.
I won the war.
God forgive me.
(It may not be correct, I'm doing this without looking it up, because at the moment I only have the translation at hand)
This was not translated the way I liked. Though the translator used the same style: short sentences, each it's one line.
So no matter how skilled you are, it is still not possible to do a perfect job. This is one of the times it could have been translated almost word for word, but he didn't and thus ruined it.
Don't get me wrong. It wasn't ruined for a first reader who didn't know the original. I remember my friend sending me exactly this part and telling me she needs to pause because she has to cry and can't see properly.
But I was disappointed. ;)
On the upside: there were times, the translation made me understand something better. When I thought, Oh that's what he meant! I thought it was something else.
Second post, other topic:Let me know if it's any good. I read the plot line and it didn't draw me in.
Our nephew visited yesterday with his friend who is a girl. ;D
They are definitely together. We saw them kiss :-*
LOL
Before it wasn't official, but nowhe is introducing her to the family. Cute.
My husband and I are going to the cinema today. We are watching Thor.
My daughter watched it on Friday with her friends. It was her birthday party and I was not allowed to join them, because I seem to embarrass her, or so she told me, lol.
It is still hot, but now there are thunderstorms and rain in between as is normal for that part of the year.
And that one borders poetry and poetry is even more impossible to translate.Remove the poetry from the translation. No great loss.
This I think is only a part of it.Very nice post. I agree about all what you said.

I renovate old houses these days. Not many zoom meeings for a job like that :PSometimes I use my phone for this. Then I get continuous spelling mistakes when the keyboard is on the wrong language and corrupts my messages,
My laptop sits collecting dust, for the most part. I use my phone for most things these days.
Anyway, I hope you're doing alright.
((((((((((((((((((Don))))))))))))))))))))
You are missed!
I hope you do not seat in front of a computer too often because of good reasons, and having better things to do.
I renovate old houses these days. Not many zoom meeings for a job like that :PFor some reason I expected you to say "You ask me, on this day... of my daughter's wedding"... :D

And The Law wasn't what I expected, but I really enjoyed it. I got it through Audible and listened at work. Jim Butcher narrates it. He did a good job, I think.
*hides a smile for her own reasons*Looks like she didn't notice either :D or just decided not to make an issue out of it. Lol
It's good to win at something :D
@Regen: You have my deepest sympathies ;D I hope they're not Neighbours From Hell. Probably too much to hope for, but you never know.Oh dear, I hope not. But OK, in this case we will have to set the bats loose and put cobwebs everywhere and the Skull looking out the window. Let's see who's more afraid, lol.
Oh dear, I hope not. But OK, in this case we will have to set the bats loose and put cobwebs everywhere and the Skull looking out the window. Let's see who's more afraid, lol.Very Coraline. I approve :D
@Dina:
Have fun with the new TV.
Oooh! Welcome, Elin! :) I hope she is wealthy
Well, no idea what I was watching when you asked that question, Fcrate, but I am watching TV news now. TV is working very well, and I am happy to see I could watch some football match without problems :). My previous TV had screen problems (some spots were brighter than the rest) and the effect was especially annoying when watching matches. Something about the green field made them more apparent. If all continues well, we will be able to see the World Cup with a very clear image.
I am used to ebooks now, much easier for my sight as I can modify the font size. But I still prefer paper books.I have too many books and I am unable to throw them away. Ebooks take no space. Also I can get the ebook as soon as it is released in the middle of the night when all book stores are closed.
I have too many books and I am unable to throw them away. Ebooks take no space. Also I can get the ebook as soon as it is released in the middle of the night when all book stores are closed.A good reason. A great advantage.
You are lucky. ;D I slept over it and can remember now. It was The Fall Guy from the early 80s.Oh, I remember that show. I did not like it very much, even when it has the six-million man, but at the time we had so few TV networks that sometimes I watched it. I had totally forgotten about that show though :)
I looked it up. In some later episodes his hair was about to look greying.
Wasn't kindergarten time, but a friend from this time. We were in elementary school by then. But in different villages. We still often played with each other when I was with my grandmother. Our mothers were best friends, so sometimes we had no choice, lol.
I live only a few houses from his father now, but he himself doesn't live here any more.
I agree, Arjan. That is one of the main reasons hubby and I have kindles.I agree. The show wasn't that good. And nobody even had green hair. ;)
Oh, I remember that show. I did not like it very much, even when it has the six-million man, but at the time we had so few TV networks that sometimes I watched it. I had totally forgotten about that show though :)
Today Netflix released Sandman. I am a fan of the comic, so I am excited. Looking forward to this night, to watch it.
@Regen: I don't really fear spiders, but that beast is quite scary tbh. We only have small, flimsy and harmless spiders here. Kudos to your daughter.Solace sounds very sad.
@Dina: it's just called Riddick, I think.
About Solace:The scene hit me hard, but it was nothing compared to the impact of watching Will Smith put his dog down in I am Legend.(click to show/hide)
Interesting, I will probably check it. Thanks!Yeah, you're welcome, that's my "revenge" for the Sandman, lol ;)
About the spiders, maybe in the south, but I'm not sure. We do have lots of scorpions if it makes you feel better :DI agree. Comic on phone is no fun. Though better than on kindle, lol.
Rivers of London sounds interesting. I'll check it out. Although I tried reading comics on my phone, it was too much of a hassle to be enjoyable, so Sandman is out.
LOL, when we were young we did not have our cells with maps and plans telling us where to go. I was never good with directions, so it is sort of a miracle I never had serious problems. Now, cells helped me. A few years ago, hubby and I went to London and Paris, and we are indebted to our cells (even when we had to save some maps in case we did not have internet. It took us some days to learn how to have connection on the street). Young people has it easier now :)In some way yes. But I have noticed, as so many people use their navigation systems or Google maps, some don't know how to use a paper map or orient themselves without one any more.
I am good with maps too! It is with real life streets that I become confused, or with instructions. When I see a map, all is solved in my mind.Somehow they did. ;) They said, their train to the city was one hour late, but I believe they missed the train and took the next one, lol.
Did your girl arrived home without further troubles?
I sort of redecorated our living room.Words every man dreads to hear. :D
Hubby says there was beer, but it not appeared in the first lesson. Also, according to duolingo, German favorite drink is sparkling water, no, it is not beer or coffee.Beer is sparkling, too. I thought it would be beer. Yes, about the water. Be careful when you order a glass of water in Germany. You'll get bottled mineral water which contains carbonic acid and therefore sparkles.
Ok, I admit that if there is chocolate, I wouldn't choose the vanilla, but per se, vanilla ice cream is fine. Nothing to write home about, but it is icecream. My thoughts exactly. Personally I rarely seek out icecream, even though I love it, but when I do it's chocolate, chocolate, chocolate. Maybe a dash of vanilla mixed in. I don't think I have had any icecream this year though. I'm trying to lose weight.
I've heard about icecream with cola, but all of these sound like rocket science to me. :D
@Regen: I had Seth Rogen on my mind :P I'd just watched a YouTube clip from the movie "This is the end".
So, the Queen is dead. It felts somehow surreal, as if that was not going to happen. Even when after the death of her husband I knew she would probably don'y live too much.I just wanted to write about her death too.
Hi everyone! I hope you are doing well.Oh my. Thank you. This addresses exactly my inner geek.
I wanted to share this tweet about English grammar. I thought it was interesting.
https://twitter.com/dtmooreeditor/status/1569366666844192769
Well, that was an interesting story.Looks yummy. Is it just the dough or is there something inside?
We have some pastries (salty ones) that we call "cuernitos" which translated as "little horn" but they are not C-shaped. They are vaguely spiral-shaped, I guess like an unicorn horn or something.
You can see them here
(https://img-global.cpcdn.com/recipes/recipes_187811_v1430334484_receta_foto_00187811-dl1vq7yysjo2hairhahp/680x482cq70/cuernitos-de-grasa-foto-principal.webp)
So you know, if you come here, not to confuse with your little horns.
That sounds cute! I am sorry you feel weaker but I am glad you are better. Best wishes for a fast recovery for all of you.Thank you. :)
LOL!Don't worry. You didn't miss anything. I am sure you are not the right target group either, lol.
I have not read the novels or watch the movies.
I am such a dork, I was sure I had told you the name of the Spanish show. I think it is called "A private affair" in English, which is a good translation of the original name "Un asunto privado". It is a season of 8 episodes. I have seen 3 of them so far.Thank you. We might look into it. Today we just watched the latest episode of Rings of Power in the afternoon, but this week was difficult to watch something together, because we had different sleep patterns.
I began watching Rings of Power (only ep1 so far). I am liking it.I love it. Though I have some trouble with the actor playing Elrond. He's good, but he doesn't look like in my head at all.
It is a series, but I don't know how many episodes or any other details. The actual title is "The Empress". I'll let you know what I think when I see it, but I will probably be biased :)
I was a bit disappointed by the end of Rings of Power. It felt as if the story had just started. I hope there will be more, some day. I liked it.Oh, I think the second season is already on its way. Of course it is just the beginning.
You are already finishing the whole Da Vinci's demons? Or just the first season?Complete. We finished yesterday. We were watching 2 episodes per evening most of the time. Sometimes one in the afternoon, if the weather was ugly and the kids in their rooms. 8)
The movie was very well done, and hubby and I finished it quite moved. I truly cried. It is a very sore topic for us.This I can imagine. It wasn't so far in the past.
This I can imagine. It wasn't so far in the past.
I visited the ducks yesterday. One of the old ones is still there. And there are about 10 ducks now. At least 5 male and 5 female. We fed them some oats. It was just me and Micro. The others were still asleep, lol.
We finished She-Hulk yesterday. It was so much fun.
Hello people!
How is everybody doing?
I have no big news but as my university changed the bank that is paying us our salary and as a welcome (and to keep us) the new bank is giving us some money in the credit card. So I bought a new cellphone (which I was in dire need). It is in six payments, but nearly half of the total sum is covered by the bank "gift". So I am happy, even when I am still getting used to it.
Ohh, that is wonderful about the night sky!She is very happy. The night sky looks cool. Now I want this too over our bed, lol. I somehow feel the need to paint something else with the glowing colours. I am almost done with the first side of the room. Just drying and then cleaning up, probably painting over some flaws.
I am sure you will find a way to cover the old sun rays (by the way, that sounds lovely. I am sure her room was beautiful and the most important thing is it is full of love!). Let us know how that works about the nocturne sky.
I am sure it is very tiresome to paint everything with the furniture moving and all that, but it will be worthy if makes micro happy.
Sounds great!Oh, how lovely. So there is still something left that he made himself. I wouldn't repaint it either.
When I was a child, my dad painted me a whale and some sea waves. I loved her. She was repainted a couple of years later...and the repainted version still exists. Only it is hidden under a couple of wardrobes. The room is no longer mine, hubby and I slept in the main room and that one is sort of a store room. But I was not able to erase the whale.
so perhaps not a person looking down at you :DLOL
Oh, how lovely. So there is still something left that he made himself. I wouldn't repaint it either.Exactly :)
And today, Argentina lost and I am so intensely sad. But well, life goes on.Oh no, I have not watched it but I looked at who won.
You would hear the occasional people cheering or doing the opposite. What's the opposite of cheering in English anyway. We would say "Buh-Rufe".Booing, perhaps? We say "abuchear" or directly "insultar" (to insult).
For example, "libre' means "free" in Spanish and French, but a book in French is a "livre" and in Spanish is "libro". I remember once I almost wrote livro. It would have been a horrible mistake, an embarrassing one for an adult. How hilarious! I literally wrote " libre" for book in French and was confused why my sentence was wrong. It was a longer sentence and I assumed it was one of the more complicated words I did wrong, like qu'est-ce que c'est or something. Like the thing Duolingo does for beginners, when it feels like you spend days repeating What's your name? My name is Laurent. I am Duo. Who are you?. And variations and you do everything correctly except the spelling of the name.
We are in the finals! :)
Go Argentina! You have a good chance now. This was the first match that I watched this WC. I'll watch Morocco VS France tonight :DDid you enjoy our match? I have not seen Morocco-France, how was it? Of course, all Argentina was rooting for Morocco.
Yay!Did you and your family had a good time? I am sure it was beautiful!
Go, Argentina!!!
I predict, Argentina will win the world cup 2:1 against France.
We have snow! I mean real snow that stays. There is still some grass looking out here and there but the last days have been cold enough that the snow on the ground no longer melts. The sun is behind clouds, the sky white and the streets are slippery. It's not enough for sleighing yet, but the Christmas market will be especially beautiful tomorrow with snow.
