I live between Richmond, VA and Washinton, DC and I want to try to find a good release party. I know there's a few Dresdenphiles down toward Virginia Beach and Williamsburg and I keep hearing rumors of a few up near Baltimore. I guess it boils down to "Who's going to have the best Ghost Story release party in the Mid-Atlantic Region?"
Feel free to discuss below:
-
I made my vote, but a second would be Richmond, VA for me. There and VaBeach are about all we'd be able to do this go round due to the expense of traveling anywhere that would require more than a day trip. VaBeach is a pretty awesome place in summer though. You know, beach and all. LOL

Yeah, I always stay at this little place on 24th Street. They're great people there.
-
With Toe being a very good friends of mine imma go wherever he is for the release my vote is fredricksburg cuz its a good midway between the national capital region and the VA beach area. i know that am i jacked for the release so where ever the party is im down

I'd say DC. We /might/ be able to get iago in on it if we can figure out a spot! Also, it's up in the air whether or not I'll be able to be there. I may or may not have a show that day/night, I don't have the summer schedule yet.
VA Beach is a bit far for me and Richmond is just... traffic issues. My second would be Fredericksburg. (Winchester, VA here)
-
Another thought. If we get a good number of people there, and if anyone's interested, I would be willing to try to run a one-shot DFRPG game. Only if we have a good chunk of hours together, though.
Also, keep in mind that release day is a Tuesday, for those who have work and such.

I'm not to far from Fredericksburg but I put in all the locations from Baltimore to VAB because they are within two hours for me. (I have an hour long commute, one way, on a good day... Anywhere I can get to in under two hours isn't really worth mentioning.)
I threw Philly in at the last minute because I thought we might get Priscellie to come down that far. I didn't think we could get her the whole was down to DC or Fredericksburg.

I would LOVE to do something like this. Especially if we can get iago, though that might be too much like work for him...

I've already told them I'll be out the 26th. They asked me what game was coming out... I told them it was the next Dresden Files book... They looked at me like I was crazy.

i could do DC or baltimore. if i'm picking up garrett it'd be dc only and even then it is 8 hours of driving for me. also, it being a tuesday makes my probability nil, as right now i'm the only person at work who can do my job.

Okay, update from Fred (iago): He definitely won't be doing any sort of anything with this, as EvieBrother will most likely have recently joined the mortal plane by that date.
However, I have been in touch with a couple other folks in the DC area. We've got time to see how it all pans out.
-
I notice none of those locations are set in Europe at all! :p :)
-
Well, I'd say let's have the party in Winchester, but it won't be the one you're thinking of, Wiz. ;)

Heh, yeah, I have to work the next day! I suppose I'd entertain the possibility of going to Philly, but... it'll be release night. You won't have read the book yet! I won't be able to squee and flail with you! Seems more sensible to have a party the Friday or Saturday after the book's release, so our heads will all be at equal states of explosion. :D
I'd come down to D.C./Baltimore for a Saturday party, largely because I might get to meet the new Hicks Jr. :D
-
THE HICKSLING.
-
I sescond Priscellie's motion that the party be either a Friday or Saturday. I can justify it to myself more easily if I don't have to go in to work the next day.
Also, I would love to do a one-shot of the RPG.
-
Friday or Saturday is trickier for me, if I'm remembering last year's schedule right. Though I may be able to get someone to cover for me—more info on that later.
I still say DC. I know heartsonycgr volunteered her house on twitter, I'll see if she's serious. :D
-
I can do all above. I volunteer my house if you want near DC. Warning...I live in country so can be boring @ here. Bout an hour from DC. Lots of land if folks like camping! :).

I thought about that, but figured we'd have a better chance of getting everyone together for an "Event" instead of a Saturday.
Here's a random thought. (And I know I've been squawking about it a lot...)
Baltimore Comic-Con is August 20-21 this year. Its two weeks later, but... It provides the "Event," its long enough after release that most of us will have read it at least once and it possibly increases the chance of us getting a few hold outs. People who would be reluctant to go for just a fan get-together.
I still like the thought of a release party, maybe the night of... I don't know.
-
I like Baltimore Comic Con idea...
-
And I live about an hour from Baltimore so those who want to crash here & save $ can do so! :D

i live about an hour from baltimore too. but i don't know that i really have the time and money to go to another con this year. i'm pretty well spent for cons.

BC is fairly cheap compared to most Con's I've looked at. I think they did group rates at one point and there's a lot of stuff in Baltimore if we ended up doing an after party and/or "Fan Dinner" type event.
-
Like I said before Im good where ever we decide. I would love to do a fan dinner at BC and i understand that most of us have to work the day after the release but im sure we all could work something out. toe just keep me in the loop.

If you want to meet up at the Greenbriar B&N release night, I'm game. Electric Butters said that he met one of the major organizers for Marscon working there, so I'm thinking she might be supportive of organizing something if we can get enough support drummed up.
-
Yeah... I don't think I'll be able to do anymore cons for the next ten years. I really shouldn't have gone to NYCC, much less another convention not half a year later. As it stands, I don't even have the money to preorder Ghost Story at this point.

Why are they all on the East Coast? Isn't Jim going to Houston this time?

This isn't a Jim event. This is a fan-organized shindig. Jim's signing tour has not yet been announced.

Oh how I wish it was a Jim Event, but no, only us lowly fans.
Voting has closed. It looks like DC and Fredericksburg (weird) have the most votes.
Now for the next question... And no, I don't think I'll start a poll for it...
Do we want to do something:
A) Before Release
Evening of July 25th for Dinner and then a place that will sell us our copies at Midnight, then IHOP to sit around and read the book w/ LOTSA coffee...
B) After Release
That weekend July 30th/31st (or Aug 6th/7th) for a Post Release Party. Fun, food, (hopefully) friends. and lots talk about the book that we've all had time to read.
C) Baltimore ComicCon
I know, I know. A lot of people have said they can't do another CON (both in the topic, others, PM, and RL) but just because we have a fan event NEAR a CON after CON Hours... Maybe at PF Changs in the Harbor, or... Anyone from Baltimore want to throw ideas out there?
D) Per Priscellie: Jim is coming to the B&N in Tyson's Corner on August 1st at 7:00pm. If we can get an itinerary of Q&A/Signing, then we might want to do a Fan Gathering before (Traffic Horrible) or After (possibly too late on a work night...)
And now I think I might be lobbying for a bit of C & a LOT of D...
And I don't want the thread to lock.

Just read that and WOOHOO!!! Was actually about to Edit/update my last post.

Threads don't lock in this section of the forum.

Prisc, if you start a thread for the Aug 1st signing, I'll try to post 2nd so that I can maintain a roster of those that will be coming since I can't seem to start my own unless it's a poll.
Edit, although maybe some confirmation should happen first...

Sign me up. I just need to see if I can get a babysitter for the night. Then my wife can come too!
And I ran into the same issue with Poll/Post.

I'm not posting individual threads for signing locations until they're confirmed by Jim's publicist.

I think we'd (yakoaohw and I that is) def be up for this. Maybe...it depends on rehearsal schedule for "Guys and Dolls".

BTW, according to Google it's a 3.5 hour drive for me from work. However I have heard enough accounts of the traffic issues there that I fully intend to leave before Noon. Which means that I expect to get there early in an attempt not to get stuck in traffic for hours on end, and would love to have the chance to hang out with you and any others that are willing to meet up early.

A Release Party with Jim at Comic Con San Diego Ca would work best for me :>
Now if only Jim can make Comic Con ...

He did make it to CON, now, did you?

Okay, It looks like Ghost Story's release came and went, and while a lot of us got together at the signing, it still wasn't quite what I was looking for...
habu987 has started a topic, Anyone interested in a Dresdenite group meeting in the DC/VA/MD area? (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,27971.0.html)
I've suggested AFTER Baltimore ComicCon on Saturday.
(Sorry for the thread Necro, just wanted to get this out there...)

Started a new Topic for the 2012 Baltimore Comic-Con. It's over here...
