This is one thousand percent a guess but what if he's really Puck? Kind of like the character from Gargoyles playing a normal person to hide out in the open.

Yeah, Puck as an entity is already a different character in the Dresden Files (although I think Gargoyles did him better).
As far as the type of role that Puck played, Mac is mysterious to Dresden, but he seems to be more of a known quantity outside of Dresden's inner circle. Maeve, for instance, acts as if she knows who Mac is. It's hard to hide in plain sight when people know who you are.

Hence why I think he fits. If everybody knows who he is except normal people. Wouldn't that be a huge laugh?
