I got more of a River Tam vibe off of her. Luna Lovegood is quirky. River Tam is insane and dangerous, but well-meaning.This
Rowl is still my favorite PoV in the book.
I found it surprising after all the buildup, but the chapters from Rowl's POV were actually the ones I liked the least. They were good, of course, but I found that I really preferred seeing the cats' interactions with humans when not from the perspective of the cat. I think that I liked them being more inscrutable, which is easier to show from a different viewpoint.

River Tam is insane and dangerous, but well-meaning.This was my first thought as well, but then Ive been subconsciously measuring each new character against the Serenity Crew-members from the get-go. Still no Doctor, and we have a Scotty instead of a Caylee
Oh, I'll drop a few early reactions here. I don't need them answered because I will read the book, I just wanted to say my initial wonderings.Im not done yet either, but there is a particular character that makes me believe the answer is No. It doesnt preclude him being undiscriminating in the style of Captain Jack Harkness (Dr Who), though(click to show/hide)
Captain Grimm reminds me more of Captain Lawrence from the Temeraire Series by Naomi Novik than Mal.
Yeah, Mal is somewhat less-than-impressed with the idea of always being calm, collected and utterly unflappable in front of the crew. Maybe Mal pre-Battle of Serenity, but I doubt it. Captain Laurence has the advantage of commanding a similarly greater number of crew members than Mal, however, plus his 'ship' is very much sentient. (I don't think I've ever heard a better description of Temeraire than 'insouciant but understands the need for cooperation'...)True, but that is more the genre difference I think; the Space-western vs the victorian steampunk. Mal also does not know down to the second how long it takes a cup of tea to cool to proper drinking temperature. Strip away those style trappings and I think they are pretty darn close
I have barely began the book (and so far I am loving it) so I will stay away of this spoiler section, but as I've seen the name of this thread, I needed to come to say(click to show/hide)

and besides the whole crew screams FireFly.Except they had a Scotty instead of a Caylee. :D Unless Gwen became Caylee...? :o
I got a big "Auri" vibe from Folly.count me in the "Auri" camp.
She's a thin waif of a girl who is more knowledgeable/powerful than outside appearances indicate.
Also a strange way of talking and seemingly crippling social/communication issues.

Am I the only one who saw Mrs. Cavendish as an evil Polgara from the Belgariad series? It's been millennia since I read that series, but I think I remember it enough to say that sounds close. The vibe from both are similar, although I remember Polgara being levels higher than Cavendish, and almost sadly sympathetic by the end. Cavendish doesn't seem likeable, and redemption seems unlikely.

Their demeanors are worlds apart though. So even if she did take over Mr Journeyman at some point, I think Predator would likely just have a much more proper Scotty than a Kaylee.Fair points. She's Caylee in appearance only, and even then only when wearing overalls and grease.
Journeyman is quite the Scotty, but Gwen is different of all. To be honest, I don't see the Firefly remembrance, except because it's a private ship , of course. There is a particular scene that opens with laying on the ground under a panel connecting things, and there was a line in the Firefly (Train Job) Commentary that always stuck with me talking about Caylee's intro in that scene and how crawling out from under a panel like that is universal TV language for Ships Mechanic/Engineer, or something to that effect. So when Gwen was grease-covered in the engine room, one that has a similarly physical and tactile Engine in the middle, it sort of anchored to two together in my mind, even if it's not strictly rational :-[
Oh, absolutely. I also described her as getting "all Kaylee". Of course I was reminded of her. It's only that, as you said, it's in the looks not in the character.I was half-expecting a scene where(click to show/hide)
I had not thought that, but I would have liked it too.Agreed, though I expect(click to show/hide)

Nah, that duel established Cats as citizens of the Spire. It's totally coming back up.Nah, the Duel just provided a convenient forum to announce the Spirearch's proclamation that did so. Now that the moment is past it makes no difference whether Reggie gets Satisfaction from somebody who is now quite possibly considered a war hero.

Well that depends. That coming out during the duel will ensure it isn't forgotten, and I'm of the opinion that the actions of the inquisition won't be widely known. I'd be very surprised if it isn't at least addressed as having occurred/been resolved between volumes.Possible, but I dont think they'll bother with that much pointless theater when they have a war to fight. The duel was simply a convenient Forum for the announcement, but I actually do think they'll forget about it, and quickly,
what with the war and the catastrophic loss of the shipyard. The only way it would still go forward was if Reggie pushed the issue, and he'd been expecting to avoid the whole thing on a technicality; I expect he was looking for a way out of the whole mess even before the attack distracted everyone.

Yes!!!!!
Definitely Not. After about book 3, the Temeraire series got so bad I stopped reading it. Which is unusual for me as the only other series I've stopped reading is GOT. Cause I hated everyone and wanted them all to die. Horribly. Somewhere away from me.
Anyway, Grimm isn't like Mal or Captain Laurence. Grimm strikes me as being a Navy version of Sharpe from Sharpe's Rifles. He's not as much of a ladies man but he gets the job done, however he can, regardless of the cost to himself while trying to preserve his men.
