DF Spoilers / Re: New Dresden Series
« on: May 25, 2025, 04:22:21 PM »
I can't be enthusiastic about the possibility of Butcher following GRRM's path in getting involved with TV/movie adaptations.  With 5 or so years between publishing Dresden books since 2015 and with, what, 7 more to go after Twelve Months is scheduled to be released in January 2026, I'd much, much wish that he focus on finishing Dresden.

Or he can also get a co-writer and start pumping Dresden books out every 12-24 months like he did through Skin Game.
Even then, the Dresden files wouldn't likely be done for 10 more years.

I agree with you on this, especially as long as he is projecting the series to go.  I have always thought that he needs to edit, wrap up unresolved stuff on the margins and get to the meat of the story.

I do not think the Sword of Faith would work. Its power on mortals is diminished. In Peace Talks they discuss the sword and how it would only work on true evil and Michael/Harry state that you would have to be absolute to qualify as evil and thus able to be impacted by the sword.

Which is very weird since Susan in Death Masks was unable to touch the Sword of Faith, yet in Changes she could wield the Sword of Love.  Yeah, I understand it was out of love to save her daughter, but the other time she was helping Harry escape Nic and he merely asked her to hold it for him while he tried to climb a ladder out if I remember correctly and he was too weak to carry Sword and climb. Evil is evil, so in the first case her vamp half qualified as evil, but in the second case it didn't or was overlooked?

Excellent point. I admit that I was thinking younger wizard as thrall not younger wizard as ally at the island. This wrinkle opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Does anyone know where Carlos is during this fight on the island?

Is he even mentioned?  A couple of points, Carlos is a team player for the most part unlike Harry, in other words he'd spend more time at headquarters, signing orders and exposed to Peabody ink. Carlos in spite of his position is one of the younger wizards, more vulnerable to it's effects.  Did anyone bother to see if Carlos was affected by the ink?  If not rehabbed is the effect of the ink long lasting, and his ill fated sexual encounter with Molly just cemented his paranoia and feelings against Harry.

DF Spoilers / Re: RNT: What is The Enemy's Plan in Storm Front?
« on: May 25, 2025, 01:03:39 PM »
Precisely. Nemesis says in Battleground through Justine that apocalypse isn't an event, its a frame of mind. Flooding the streets with the Three Eye Drug would help lay the framework of that frame of mind in the populace.

Opening skirmishes, setting the stage for the big battle to come.  The idea is to nibble around the edges unnoticed to weaken, then the take over.  Remember for the first several books the reaction to Harry's theories about a "Black Council" for lack of a better name was rejected by most.

Having said that, returning to the thread topic, I prefer g33k’s concept that Harry is prescient to the idea that he is broadcasting his thoughts.  Broadcasting his thoughts, even if restricted to certain “sensitive” individuals, could be a distinct weakness for Harry.  And outside the phrase repetition, there is no evidence I can recall of Harry’s enemies knowing what he is thinking.  For example, none of Harry’s companions in Skin Game seemed to be aware of his arrangement with Goodman Grey.

They didn't know about the arrangement with Goodman Grey because they were made at Mac's Bar with special security blockers put on by Mab.

Someone once asked JB if Mab could remove Thomas' demon.  IIRC, JB said something like, yes, she could.  She could tear it right out of him.  The problem would be that there wouldn't be much left of Thomas when she got done.

I just came across that WOJ a couple of days ago when I was trying to find out something else. The question then becomes what did Jim mean by that?  Did he mean physically tear it out and Thomas would be ripped to shreds?  Or did Jim mean once his Hunger was gone, the vampire aspect and all it's perks would be gone and we'd be left with a vanilla Thomas.  Going by his soul gaze with Harry and Harry's vision of Thomas struggling with the Demon, remember what that Thomas looked like?  He was this slight weak looking man with glasses, nope not much of Thomas left, at least the Thomas we've always known.

During turncoat Harry was not a cadet more a lieutenant banging the police captain. He had a whole region and Wardens who report to him. Its the loose cannon on the force banging the chief, the very strict chief . Its Riggs banging the Captain in lethal weapon,
Imagine mike lawrey from bad boys banging his captain.

Yes, he is a cadet in as much has he had none of the training that the other wardens go through.  You will remember he was drafted in Dead Beat and automatically made Regional Commander for North America.  And again, I agree the Regional Commander banging the Captain of the whole force smells bad, because Harry is seen as loose cannon, and he was banging his commander.  So why wasn't that picked up by anyone?  Could it be subtle manipulation, i.e. nudge, nudge, by Peabody ink so that those on the Senior Council, fellow commanders like Carlos, were aware of it, but because of the nudge, nudge of the Peabody ink chose to look the other way? Something they would not have done if they weren't under the influence.  It's like drinking and driving, maybe not legally drunk by any breath test, i.e. the older wizards, but reflexes slowed just enough to where if something popped up they might not be able to react swift enough, so wreck!  As in what Harry said about some of the decisions that were made during the war with the Red Court.

I don't know that we ever saw enough of Slate's own life to say either way.

We do know that the former Summer Knight had a job as, IIRC, some sort of fantasy illustrator or artist.  For what that's worth.

Which suggests for whatever reason, Knights of either Court are not given huge pay checks.  One explanation for it could be that while they do carry a mantle, Knights remain mortals.  As mortals the Courts may not want life style to draw attention to them, because they are vulnerable.  As you point out in Summer Knight, the Summer Knight had a day job, and was murdered because it was known who he was.

[quoteThose anti Dresden members obviously complained about Dresden manipulating poor Staci to get more power but did they say it out loud.

I would think that they would, there is that faction of the Senior Council that would like nothing more than to see Harry, minus his head..

The WC is old fashioned they don't object to master student relationships what makes you thing they would object to a relationship between two consenting adults. Im not sure if there is any formal code for relationships between members, Wardens and SC. And given their lifespans and small numbers trying to enforce a no relationship clause is asking for a headache

Yeah.....But this is a bit different, this is the police captain banging one of her academy cadets..  A cadet with a questionable past in the middle of a murder investigation, that should pop up a few red flags here and there.. Which actually gets to the heart of what I am talking about, the effect of the Peabody's ink's nudges on the senior members of the Council.  Did those nudges blind them to those red flags?  Which actually fits nicely with why Peabody had no problem pushing Luccio towards Harry, which normally the Senior Council would notice and object to, this time was passed off under the influence as, as you say an affair between to consenting adults, makes the Captain happy so who cares?

Just a thought.  There is a general assumption being made that if Peabody brought a younger member of the Council with him to Demonreach, that person was just muscle; and more important, someone Peabody mind raped into being his thrall.

What if Peabody brought a younger member of the Council, but not a thrall?  Someone who made a conscious choice to join The Black Council; or whatever they call their alliance, because they had their own grievance against the White Council?  You don't have to be old and disillusioned to betray your principles and the people who trust you.  There is also the possibility this person was a plant from the beginning.  Like the Matt Damon character in the Scorcese movie, The Departed.

We don't know the backstory of any of the younger Wardens Harry befriended.  Of course, only two of them are still alive.  (I'm assuming Chandler is still alive, somewhere.)

It's just something to consider and keep in mind.

And a good idea, and very possible.. However perhaps too simplistic on the face, but on the other hand the simplest explanation is usually the correct one.  Or if you buy that Peabody was merely someone else's cat's paw, that person or creature was on the island with him.

That is an intriguing possibility, here is another aspect of what you are suggesting, it isn't just his friends that are repeating this back but his foes as well.  So what if it isn't an ability that Harry has as a star born, but that he is being watched?  By who, whom, what or how, we have no clue as yet..  Who or what has the ability to follow Harry close enough undetected to be able to report back to his friends and foes what Harry is saying?  Since free will is a huge theme of the series, my vote goes to both Heaven and Hell, both have a huge interest in the final BAT.

Or the simplest explanation?  It's simply an author's ploy to make for more drama, as in a critical moment Maeve repeating back to Harry about things not adding up and they didn't.  Yeah, I know, cheap shot.. ::)

He already renegotiated his contract in a sense. After he did the whole ghost thing and found out that his attempt to kill himself failed, he told Mab that he is not going to obey her blindly and he will fulfill his jobs the way he thinks they should be done. If she couldn't work with that then he would force her to get rid of him by obeying her tasks to the letter, but showing no initiative.

I still think, and I have to go through the short stories that there is a rule that Harry can't negotiate for cash.. Then again I most likely dreamed it.. ::)

DF Spoilers / Re: Murphy
« on: May 20, 2025, 08:04:26 PM »
In my current reread, I was digging into Grave Peril, and after Harry gets bit by the nightmare, Bob explains how humans become ghosts. Is there any possibility that Murphy becomes a ghost, meets her dad, or haunts Harry? Or does the Valkryie / Odin stuff make that not possible.

She isn't a Valkdryie, she has become an Einherjar.  According to Gard she cannot come back until all those who remember her are gone...   So according to the rules, Harry should not see her anymore.  However we all know Jim will find a way around that, even if Harry sees her in the alternative universe in Mirrormirror, and then it won't be like it was so more pain for Harry.  Which may explain the wisdom of the rule in the first place.

there is an obligation between WK and Queen, WK and lady , WK and mother. Its not Mab fault that her WK cant / wont  negotiate for better treatment.
Im sure the is a WK expense account that harry will be shocked to find out about once he no longer needs money

It's possible, however I don't remember Slate exactly living high off the hog either.

Peabody couldn't make a SC member do what he wants only nudge them in a certain way. And his effects on the SC members is mych worse than the total mind control on the younger members in my view.
Imagine for a minute that you are a hot head member of the SC (Eb) for eg. You make a decision to support a strike in your anger and afterwards you find out that you could have been nudged into making that decision and ppl died as a result. You feel like that was something you would have supported its not out of character but you cant be sure. Or you are cautious ( the Merlin ) you delay a strike and the results are that many people die. Was it your natural cautiousness or Peabody ? you will never know. How will cause correct?
The young wizards were mind controlled fullstop. With counseling they may recover. They know it was not them it was someone else violating them. But the SC has a whole will always wonder if this or that decision was their own

That's the point, Peabody didn't have to do mind control over the senior members, simply nudging a Senior Council member can have grave consequences, especially in time of war as Harry pointed out.  A leader second guessing him or herself becomes a less effective leader.  Others second guessing their leader because decisions seem a bit off becomes a less effective team, vulnerable to infiltration or attack.

I think both theories have been posted here over the years.. It will be interesting to see what happens now.  Actually Alfred might be able to "jail" the Hunger Demon leaving just Thomas minus the parasite.
