And look at what happened when Harry tried it with Mother Winter. Woosh, giant skeletal claw hand dragged him into a black room with meat cleavers.

The Erlking may be on par with the Queens. The Mothers are a completely different story. Of the level above archangels (like Lucifer and Uriel).

That was also Harry as a vassal of winter, still being young, and not taking the time to build a strong circle to contain the Mother. Plus, because she'd already lost her walking stick, he HURT her in doing so.

He was counting on his winter Sidhe affiliation to work in his favor. I mean hell, he summoned Titania without even a quarter of the work he put in to summoning the Erlking.

Someone more disciplined and more mature would still have a chance.

A huge theme in this book was that the Sidhe are titanically powerful, and we're all here wondering if some wizard stole something from a being more wise and experienced than /Mab/, who, lets remember, was running the long con this whole book. I find it far more likely that (assuming it's Mother Winter's) the staff was taken through some trickery orchestrated by a full Queen or Mother Summer, most likely the latter because of Summer's role in limiting the power of Winter upon mortals. Probably had more to do with a fae, and probably involved a bumbling wizard who didn't really know much about what was going on. Probably he/she got one of those lovely "rock and a hard place" choices. Merlin?

I dunno.

HARRY was able to summon and hold the Erlking as a strong but sloppy wizard, and he's been put on par with the queens.

If there was a serious effort from a powerful AND 200+ year old wizard to steal it, I can see it happening.

Not all of them could do it, and it's obviously not a walk in the park to do, but I could see it happening, during Winter's weaker part of the day when Summer controls the table.

No, Harry thinks it too. Great minds think alike  ;)

Heh.

Re-reading it last night, and I came to that part. It seemed to be a little more than Murph just suspecting, too...

Hi, everyone, first post.

With regard to Uriel's seven words: Uriel says that Mab is lying, but we know she is incapable of lying (Mr. Butcher thoughtfully wrote us a scene in this very book in which Dresden reminds us of this). On the other hand, nowhere is it said the Uriel is incapable of lying. He certainly seems to find it distasteful, but presumably he is capable of it, especially when issues of cosmic balance are involved.

The Fallen sent Harry along one path with a seven word* lie. It seems logical that Uriel would think it fitting to give him back his free will with another (a white lie in this case, and one that gives Harry the, perhaps misguided, courage to stand up to Mab). Bottom line: Harry is wrong. Mab has more control over him than he thinks she does.

Was Uriel's point actually that Mab can lie at all? His 7 words were what jolted Harry into realizing what little leverage he had over Mab. She doesn't want an automaton, she wants a freethinking bada$$ working for her. He has a little bit of leverage because she doesn't want him to "have the initiative of a garden statue," and the Uriel's 7 words helped him figure that out.

Who cares whether Mab or Uriel can tell a lie? Uriel said what needed to be said, when it needed to be said.

I can't imagine her reaction to the shooter being Kincaid. I just can't. But mostly, I think she will be angry at Harry, and would probably rule out a relationship in the next couple of books, but I don't think it would be the same as what happened with Susan.

Am I the only one who thinks that Murph already suspects that it was Kincaid that killed Harry? Didn't it say in the book that she almost went out of her way to not mention him as a suspect?

I'm about a third of the way through my second read through, so I might be mistaken, but that's something that kind of popped out to me last night. Well, second FULL read through. I went back and reread the last 125 pages or so last night, because the final 'scenes' were just great.

As for how angry she'll be when she finds out that Harry set it all up himself, I really don't know if it's going to be a HUGE problem. I mean, I'm sure she'll be pissed, but I think that if she finds out that he didn't even mention it to Thomas, it might mollify(heh) her a little bit.

Ha, I'm sure you'll work it all out, MMM.

Since all of you playing in your game are new players, you'll take the rules as you see them, and be able to work it all out together. Shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck!

Anyone in or around Houston, TX playing(Especially in the Sugar Land area)?

I've just finally picked up the books, and I'm currently reading through them, but it would make life a lot easier if there was someone in town to actually use as a sounding board/play in a game with.

I have two friends that are also picking up the books in the next couple of days, and since two of us are experienced players in other systems, I'm sure we can eventually work everything out, but if we could find someone to either talk to or run a session or two for us and explain some game nuances, that would be awesome.

One of us is a complete n00b(my brother) but my friend and I have both been playing pen and paper RPGs for more than 10 years(he's been playing for about 15, I've been playing for about 10) and we've played D&D 3.0, 3.5 and 4th ed, Tristat games and Shadowrun(I believe that he has a couple of other systems that he's played in, but I'm not sure what all they are). Anyone local that's available to help would be awesome.

Plus, if it was the Sword of Truth, you'd be stuck rescuing some chick named Kahlan in a series of adventures where the quality of the stories declined rather quickly.

/sword of truth angst.

Sorry, back OT
