Title: Rules on graphics?
Post by: Amber on May 26, 2006, 09:09:39 PM
Is it ok to use graphics that we made as signature files?  Ie... if I made myself a pretty with the cover of one of Jim's books is it going to be some sort of...  copyright violation that I don't know about?

*whistling innocently*  not that, you know, a picture of the cover of proven guilty is my sig file for all of the bulletin boards I'm on or anything...

Jury's out.  I haven't had to deal with image files in signatures before, so it's a bit of a question mark for me, still.  We'll explore the policy as things go on.

For the time being, I would say, keep the height and width of any images you put in your signatures to an intelligent minimum -- not too much larger than the 'Jim-Butcher.Com Community' graphic you see at the top of the page, which is 400 pixels wide and 50 pixels tall.

Just testing my sig, 400x50 as per spec!

(I giggled like a loon throughout the entire process of making this)

I know that on some forums to which I belong, there is a warehouse of avatars and banners - is that something that might be available here?

I know a fairly standard size for avatars is 64 by 64 pixels, and one forum I'm on has these banner size restrictions: 390 X 75 for longer banners, and no bigger than 300 X 200 for shorter banners.

Jules

ETA: I see that Iago has some information about my first point elsewhere, so I will check it out  ;D

I wondered about this as well because I was tempted to run off and make myself a banner for here :-D  On the forums I've been a member of and the ones that I have helped run... the basic Avatar size has been 100x100 and a general sumation of signature guidelines:

-Total sig no larger than 8 (sometimes upto 15) lines of text which includes graphics
-No more than 3 total images allowed in your signature (smilies do not count)
-Only 1 animated banner
-No banner larger than 450x150
-No "kewl" talk or DiStOrTeD text

eh, just some generalities to think about... mostly you only run into problems when you have the younger and/or those special overzealous members.... heh

As a maker of signature banners *grin* I would like to say that 'normal' avatar size is 100x100 pixels as you can see on this board now.  'Normal' banner sizes for this type of forum is usually anything up to 500 x125 pixels.  You should also think about setting a file size limit as well as a dimension limit :)  Or decide if you want to allow any animated banners or not

This software is my favourite - you can set maximum sizes for images, enable options for avatars to be uploaded or linked, and set a max size for avatars so that if someone uploads a larger one, then it automatically resizes.  Also the signature text is limited already which you can see in your profile.

whatever the forum admins decide is fine by me :)

Just trying to help :D

As someone who has a thing for blondes, a weakness for brunettes, but a deathwish for redheads...nice banner. ;)
