DF Spoilers / Re: Who are the members of the Grey Council?
« on: September 17, 2018, 06:36:17 PM »
An interesting one is Montjoy. He was mentioned in Summer Knight as one of the candidates for Senior Council nominations but was unavailable because he was "on a research trip in the Yucatán," according to Martha Liberty.

The reason I find this interesting is because:
1. He's strong (or old) enough to be considered for a senior council position. So he potentially has the power level for Grey Council.
2. Martha Liberty was the one who knew where he was. She's an ally of Eb so I'd say that puts Montjoy in the Eb/Martha/Indunjoe faction.
3. He was in the Yucatan. Know what else is in Yucatan? Chichen Itza. Sounds like he was doing some research into the red court.

If he is in the Grey council, I don't know that being named in passing a single time in the series is enough to be considered by Jim in the list of 6 that we "already know".

So he might be one of 4 we haven't met instead.

1. Drug Addict Molly
2. Mother Molly with children
3. Warden Molly
4. Normal Molly (possibly apprenticed to Harry)
5. Non-supernatural normal Molly
6. Warlock Molly

Howcome Winter Lady Molly never showed up in that soulgaze? Was it because it was such an unlikely scenario? Or was it because becoming the Winter Lady wasn't Molly's choice, but a consequence of other's Choices.

If it's the second, MMHarry's choice in GP could open some possibilities to Molly that weren't shown to our Harry in the soulgaze.

That being said, from a doylist perspective, if Jim had a plan for MM-Molly back when he wrote PG, I can't imagine he would have written the soulgaze scene without giving us a hint of it.

Is DF all planned out or outlined?
A general outline/events have been planned since 1995.  Two extra books are planned as DF is two books behind.
So probably 22+3

When are we going to see dragons again?
Dude, I can’t possibly do a dragon thing unless it’s a whole book. So that would be book….20 or 21, something like that. Probably 21. Yeah, that seems about right.

Do you expect to change your method of going forward a year in your storyline each book?  Will you do any big jumps forward or maybe even backward?
Yes I'm going to keep doing that because it works a little bit better for me to keep track of what year it is in the story.  Am I going to make any big leaps forward or backwards?  Well there is a whole law of magic about messing with time, and given it's a law of magic, Dresden is gonna have to break it eventually.

We’ve still go the really excited things in front of us.  We’ve got giants and apocalii (which I judge to be the plural of apocalypse).  Kaiju and gods.  Plus we’re going to have a dragon vs. wizard fight.  Because…you knew that was coming.

Kaiju is like godzilla-type stuff.
Also I can't find the WoJ but there is one mentioning aircraft carriers.

DF Spoilers / Re: Unsolved Mystery Book10 the disappearing coin trick
« on: November 09, 2017, 04:07:28 PM »
As much as I like the closed room mystery puzzle, I feel like we can't forget the possibility that someone summoned the coin.
We know it's possible since Lash wanted to show Harry how to do it in the climax of WN before her Heroic Sacrifice™ and it was one of his backup plans if Mab turned him down in Changes.

Klaus the Toymaker, who devastated the Reds at Chicken Pizza with a Slinky™, a Jack-in-the-Box, and a cork gun.

(I really, really, really like the concept of Klaus, and I just hope to God he makes it into Peace Talks and we get to see him devastate a squad of Fomor with a rubber chicken). I actually do think he might be on the Grey Council, for the record; he was the name above Ebenezer's, if memory serves, but bowed out in deference to him.

Chandler is a possibility, I think.

I think Listens-to-Wind is on it, but obviously wasn't at the fight.

And... what about Lea? Someone had to make arrangements for Odin's arrival...

IMO Klaus the Toymaker is just another alias for Santa, but if not then he's definitely a top contender for one of those 6 spots.
As for Lea, there were 12 grey-cloaked members that show up together during CI, not counting anyone that was already there. A separate discussion could be had on whether or not shes in the CG, but she can't be one of the 12.

I am going to put up a WAG for a member of the Grey Council:  Mavra.

Ok, hear me out:
1)  She was going against (maybe on purpose, maybe not) Cowl and the Black Council to get the Word of Kemler and got our favorite PI on the case
2)  During her escape in Blood Rites, Ebeneezer is conveniently off screen when she escapes.
3)  I think she would want the status quo to be held, and prey still available, as opposed to the Apocalypse.
4)  She's disappeared since Dead Beat which makes me think she's working behind the scenes (AKA Grey Council)

Feel free to point and laugh at my stupidity.  ;D

2) Yeah, it is suspicious. Not only did she get away, she was able to use a veil and an illusion when Eb's job there was to lock down her magic.

Montjoy was one of the names that came up for the senior council position in SK. According to Martha Liberty he was busy in "a research trip in the Yucatan", which is where Chichen Itza is.
Fits pretty well IMO.

It's hard to come up with 6 members aside from Harry, Odin and Eb that could be in it, but that's what the WoJ tells us so here's my 6:
Rashid
Arthur Langtry
Montjoy
Eldest Gruff
Erlking
Ivy
LTW was sick during the raid on CI
Martha Liberty her magic leans more towards information gathering IIRC

Ivy is probably the hardest one to argue for since she's not supposed to get involved, and is trying to preserve herself, but if the stakes are high enough (outsider / extinction level threat) I think a case could be made for her to fight.

As for the merlin, I think the stance that "there is no black council" is just a public stance, to keep the members of the council from switching sides out of fear, but that he knows about the black council and is a member of the Grey Council. Hell, it might have even been his idea.

DF Spoilers / Re: Was there a Dragon in Changes?

Oh, just from the title I thought this would be about one of the Grey Council members being a dragon.
There are still four members we haven't met yet (or at least there were at the time of Changes).

DF Spoilers / Skin Game reread - How fast can spirits move?
« on: September 12, 2017, 03:34:51 PM »
Quote
“Bob,” he said.
Glowing lights surged up out of one of the pouches on his Batman vest, dancing nervously in the slowly growing light of dawn. “Yeah, boss?”
“We’re going in.”
“Uh . . .”
“If anything happens to me,” he said, “I want you to head back to the skull. Tell Andi everything you saw. Tell her I said to get you to someone responsible. And tell her that I said that I loved her.
Okay?”
A few pages later..
Quote
Butters flew off of her and landed six feet away, sprawled and dazed on the icy street. I could see blood running from one of his ears. He made a vague, spreading gesture with one hand, and Bob’s trail of campfire sparks emerged from the duster and soared away in the general direction of Butters’s apartment.
“What was that?” Tessa demanded, her tone furious as she came back to her feet.
“A detail,” Nicodemus said, his tone harsh.
And then..
Quote
There was a sound like a howl of holy trumpets backed up by the voices of an entire choir. And suddenly a shaft of blinding silver-white light three feet long sprang from the broken hilt of Fidelacchius and shone in the first golden light of that day’s dawn, humming with the full power of the Sword, only louder now, more melodic, and physically audible

The last two quotes are just one inner-monologue and one sword-throw apart. Can Bob really move that fast? I'm assuming he's fine since it would be weird for Bob to have been vaporized offscreen with no mention until the next book. But is this an oversight by Jim or can spirits move across the city in seconds?

DF Spoilers / Re: Wizard Academy

Since when does wizarding not pay?

Harry makes money finding people, lost items, consulting for CPD, and being a warden.

He could open up a potion shop. Levitation, escape, love, weightloss, pick-me-up, stealth we know he can make. Add in some super strength, speed, mental acuity, you get the idea.

If he had lower ethics he could have been the security consultant for Marcone. Lara would probably pay quite a bit to have him on her payroll as well.

Mort seems to be doing fine as a spiritual whatever he is.

DF Spoilers / Re: Senior Council Magic Speciality

I don't know which video this is from, but I remember Jim saying that one of the Merlin's specialties is the coordination of wizards in combat via that mind chat spell we saw in TC.

Why isn't there a Law against it?

Also to me, Rashid seems more like the mythological post-Yggdrassil Odin (ie: very cunning use of little magic and/or using powerful magic in a supportive role) rather than a full-on Harry-style battery power slinger. So I'd guess his specialty is precognition and time manipulation, with his eye boosting his mind/soul reading powers.

Interesting..
They also both have an eye missing, have a replacement eye that gives them knowledge, both are taller than Harry (which is really rare) and both deal with time manipulation.

WAG: Odin is Gatekeeper

Okay maybe not, but there's definitely a connection there.

DF Spoilers / Re: How Harry would do the Dark Hallow in Changes wag

What bothers me is that he was considering it as a Plan C when talking to Mab.
Quote
I looked at her steadily for a moment. Then I shrugged. "If you don't want to do business,
I'll go elsewhere. I could still call Lasciel's coin to me in a heartbeat--and Nicodemus and the
Denarians would be more than happy to help me. I am also one of the only people alive who
knows how to pull off Kemmler's Darkhallow. So if Nicky and the Nickelheads don't want to
play, I can damned well get the power for myself--and the next time I call your name, I won't
need to be nearly so polite."
At this point he's in a bed paralyzed. Could he have pulled it off in that state? Or was he just bluffing?
