DF Spoilers / Re: Denarian Short Story
« on: June 30, 2019, 04:04:25 PM »
Personally, I can't see a Nicodemus short happening. POV writing would have to at least touch on his motivations, and what endgame Nic is actually playing towards is so fundamental to the main novels that I'd be really surprised if Jim revealed it in a short rather than save it for book 20 or the BAT.

Now, a short from one of the others who aren't loyal to Nic's plan - Lasciel, or maybe Tessa / Imariel (if that didn't automatically spoil which Denarian is N-fected) ... that could be interesting indeed.

Two things, the original Merlin wouldn't speak with what we know today as an "English" accent.. He existed long before that was spoken..  Jim often gives bad guys an English accent, if I remember right HWWB spoke with an English accent.

That was telepathy though, not a vocal conversation. Harry probably assigns attitudes of vague superiority as sounding British largely thanks to his experience with Langtry.

The time travel to create the prison in the past pretty much waves away any timeline issues.

Although you're right about Jim maybe being deceptive. If the prisoner is Merlin, that would be a pretty good case for him having to lie to preserve an important plot surprise.

DF Spoilers / Fate of the original Merlin
« on: June 09, 2019, 09:48:27 PM »
So I was thinking about the WOJ that Harry missed something when he was looking at the runes on the buildings on Demonreach, namely that they were similar to the Hag's ascension ritual in Welcome to the Jungle. So I reread that and noticed that Bob and Harry described it differently from the Darkhallow, as "makes you more of what you already are" rather than "poof, instant dark god".

Jim has ruled out Merlin being the English prisoner. So, what if he used an ascension ritual to turn himself into Alfred? Took the 'if you want it done right, do it yourself' approach rather than finding an existing genius loci to build around.

And given how they groove on inflicting pain and have intellectus on what would hurt somebody to their core, it probably means the worst thing Grey's father could do to some poor woman was force her to carry and raise a half-monster baby. That's probably one of the darkest origin stories for any character in the entire series.

DF Spoilers / Re: Motivation for fixing Little Chicago?
« on: May 31, 2019, 01:27:51 AM »
It's like a murder investigation.  Who has means , motive and opportunity?  Since Harry was keeping LC under wraps before first use, who could have known of it existence in the present?  That list is small.  Maybe Mab and/or the Gatekeeper.  It's never explained implicitly, but Mab has some means of seeing what happens in Chicago.  She reproduces a past event in Chicago, in full animation, in Small Favor. And the Gatekeeper has showed the ability to find Harry wherever he might be.  He does it in Summer Knight and Turncoat.  However the ability to be able to do so removes the need to use LC, since she/they seem to already have a more powerful tool that does the same thing.

Not necessarily. Little Chicago might have been capable of working in some niche way that Rashid's surveillance abilities don't. Or if it was Mab using it to snoop on Maeve to realize she was Nemfected, there are a couple reasons her own means might not have been able to see what she needed.

One, Sidhe power is highly seasonal. Just because she could monitor most of Marcone's kidnapping in the middle of a snowstorm in Small Favor doesn't mean she'd have been able to get a similar level of detail in the summer heat wave that was going on in PG. Two, assuming she was watching Maeve, one Winter queen snooping on another with Winter power might be hard to do unnoticed. Little Chicago might be a lesser spy tool overall that Mab's own, but also harder for Maeve to detect. Or three, Maeve might have a lesser version of Mab's defense against other immortals like Anduriel snooping - another version of why a lesser overall tool might be better for the purpose by way of being made by a mortal.

But what if it isn't? What if, instead, they fixed it because they needed to use it? We have WoJ that Harry is first-rate when it comes to making magical artifacts, even compared to wizards with far more experience. Furthermore, Little Chicago took an enormous amount of time to put together, as well as a fair amount of resources. If someone needed to use something like it just once, as opposed to on a regular basis, it would make more sense to fix Harry's and just use that, rather than expend the time and effort to build their own.

Harry and Bob initially missed the flaw, though, so whoever fixed it had to have had foreknowledge that Harry was about to blow himself up and wanted to prevent that, and / or been even better with subtle artifact creation.

Using Little Chicago could fit as a motivation for Mab to fix it, though. She had means to get into the apartment so long as she behaves as a good guest, and opportunity in the form of abundant skill to notice and repair it. The main argument against her was always motive - that if she knew of the flaw, she wouldn't just benevolently fix it. Her usual nature would be to hit Harry up to trade another favour(s) for 'information which will soon save your life'. But if she found it convenient to use Harry's gear for some reason, fixing the flaw could be rationalized as her way of paying to use LC, while also preventing her asset from accidentally depreciating himself.

I doubt it's a coincidence that someone else needing to use the spy tool happened at the same time shit was going down for a Nemesis plot. It's a WAG, but if it was Mab was using it, the timeline fits for that being how she found out that Maeve was compromised. Possibly she couldn't be away from Arctis Tor longer than absolutely necessary and found it convenient to capitalize on Harry's groundwork. Or perhaps Maeve's surveillance countermeasures were focused on Winter magic, and a mortal spell was able to get around them.

DF Spoilers / Re: Another Cowl Theory
« on: May 05, 2019, 01:26:44 AM »
Paolo Ortega (likely Nfected) led the charge to destroy Archangel. Simon had excellent relations with the vampire courts - Cowl is allied with Red Court & interferes in the White. Mavra clearly didn’t want Cowl (or the other 2) becoming necromantic gods.

Paolo Ortega is actually pretty high up on the list of characters I'm confident wasn't N-fected. His agenda in DM was to kill Harry so the Reds could say they'd avenged Bianca and disengage from the war. He wanted short-term peace to provide a window for a few more decades to build numbers and position so his nation could win decisively when they were actually ready to fight the Council.

Nemesis' agenda was the opposite, for the war to drag on in the short term, degrading both sides and causing chaos to cover their apocalypse preparations.

I still lean toward the Fomor kidnapping minor talents to consume their power (WOJ was that a way exists "and it's horrible"), but this is a compelling possibility.

DF Spoilers / Re: Another Cowl Theory
« on: May 04, 2019, 01:20:04 AM »
From a plot point, I expect that Harry will unmask Cowl before he knows his identity, and then later will see him at the Council to then put a name to the face.

The problem with that is that seeing Cowl's actual face would elevate Harry from not worth the potential trouble to kill, into a threat that he pretty much has to take his chances on silencing. He hasn't put all this trouble into discretion to blow everything on turning a corner in Edinburgh and being recognized sometime Harry comes to visit.

DF Spoilers / Re: Non-plot moments you're most looking forward to
« on: May 04, 2019, 01:09:55 AM »
I'm pretty sure none of them have any idea that he's a Starborn, or what that means.

Some of the senior council almost definitely do. Martha's "you know what he was meant to be" to LtW in Summer Knight comes to mind. Plus Rashid, obviously.

For instance, I really, really want to see Harry soulgaze his daughter for the first time. Mostly because I assume that Harry is absolutely freaking terrified of doing that, both because he's afraid she hates him and/or because he's afraid she will hate him based on what she sees.

Given Jim's affinity for torturing the reader via Harry, I can't really see that playing out many ways other than her seeing his memory of sacrificing Susan. Although I kind of wonder if it wouldn't strike Harry harder for her to actually understand - showing him she grasps how nasty the world can be at times - than to hate him for it.

DF Spoilers / Re: House Raith and the Venatores
« on: April 23, 2019, 01:24:07 AM »
I'm not entirely certain the creatures the Venators are trying to eliminate are Outsiders. There may be some overlap, like they'd love to get humans to forget the named Lovecraftian monsters, but they're also after a lot of other 'competitor' monsters and such. Thomas even mentioned in Backup that they'd taken a run at the Faeries but been foiled by the Brothers Grimm spreading the folklore too widely via the Gutenberg printing press to stamp out. Succeeding there would have accidentally handed the Outsiders an insta-win.

It's a bit of a confusing topic, really. Lara seemed to doubt she could keep secrets effectively from her father in BR until she realized he was crippled, but I'm not sure he'd be OK with the possibility she'd actually succeed in capping any of the particular Outsiders he's been working with. Perhaps he knew what she was doing and undermined any Venator ventures that conflicted with his particular interests.

Plus, as I think was explained in one of the books, Butters already knew Bob when he was Harry's, so his personality didn't change much since Butters already had pre-formed impressions and expectations of him.

DF Spoilers / Re: Another Cowl Theory

One thing that supports your argument is the duel between Cowl, and Dresden.  According to Jim those on the Senior Council would stomp Harry pretty easily.  So it wouldn't be someone as strong as say Eb.  I don't even think Cowl is as strong as Morgan, based on the duel.  Cowl does appear to surpass Harry's magical experience in other instances though....

We don't know how tired Cowl might have been from other work before confronting Harry over the Erlking book, so I don't really agree with ruling Simon out just because he didn't wipe Harry out with his first shot. Maybe he was just sandbagging with the force blasts rather than use his best earth-based strikes - he could have been nervous Harry being blasted into a crater would have drawn Ebenezar to drop other matters and investigate.

DF Spoilers / Re: Curious passage in Summer Knight. Justin evidence?
« on: April 08, 2019, 01:16:41 AM »
I would have to check to make sure, but I'm pretty sure they found a body in the wreckage. Doesn't Bob specify in either Fool Moon or Summer Knight that Elaine is alive because they only found one body?

Also, yeah, Cowl very much acts like someone who's never met Harry, not someone who raised him for several years and lost a duel to him.

I'm pretty sure it was mentioned that only one body was recovered from the ashes of Justin's home. Plus, Harry wouldn't have had nearly as much of a stain on him when the Wardens examined him if he'd swung at Justin and missed.

I do wonder about the possibility of Justin preserving something of himself as a backseat driver who can manage occasional control over Elaine, though. Might rationalize her being Kumori, although I'm still not sure how she ends up on the opposite side of White Night from Cowl if she is.
