DF Spoilers / Re: Any news on Peace Talks
« on: February 12, 2019, 07:07:04 PM »
Several years later my grandmother decided to she wanted to clear some space and she asked family members if they wanted any old books before she gave them to Goodwill or just threw them away.  I picked out a large World Atlas mostly because it had a large number of great photos in it, but it also told a story because it was published in 1942.  The map of most of Europe was one large Nazi flag.  I don't remember if it was named "German Empire" or "Nazi Occupied Europe."  There was an equally large Japanese Rising Sun flag spread out over a large part of the Pacific Ocean, South East Asia and China labeled "Japanese Empire."  I knew a little about the Second World War, but seeing that book made it much more real for me.  I think that Atlas made me want to learn more about history in general.

Even aside from the interest, that's probably got enough collector's value that it would have been a shame to just discard.

Now we can speculate about his real identity.

I've actually wondered if there was something going on with Mike The Mechanic. Harry has described him as near-supernaturally good at what he does that I've wondered if he might be something more than human with an affinity for craftsmanship. Probably not a svartalf unless their dislike for iron doesn't carry over to steel (not sure; they're willing to work with it for enough money as opposed to the Fae being outright poisoned by it).

Harry and Thomas were left their pentacles by Maggie Sr., and at a best guess Elaine's was made as a twin to Harry's when they were together as teenagers. I doubt there are another two of them out there at present, but if more were to be made in future I'd guess at copies for Molly and Maggie Jr.

Upgrade his next staff to a spear-staff like Odin used at Chichen Itza maybe.

So for example, it's possible that Cowl was behind some of the planning that went into the assault on Demonreach island in "Cold Days," but he sure as hell didn't make himself a potential target by riding on any of the barges with the practitioners who were attempting the ritual to bring down the island prison's defences.

Do we actually know that for a certainty? There was a WOJ floating around before Cold Days that Cowl's next appearance would be in CD. It's possible Jim just changed his mind on including him, of course, but if he was one of the summoners on the barges I don't think he'd have much problem rabbiting once the situation got out of hand.

Quite possibly - certainly the way the Queens and Ladies talk about themselves as opposed to how the Mothers are is very very different. The Mothers are definitely closer to the original being/beings.

I wouldn't even be surprised if Mother Winter is the mantle Hecate chose to keep for herself when dividing her power, and she's still the same being.

This is a good, concise narrative that fits what few facts we have.  And wardenferry419's call out on the Vichy government makes a certain amount of sense.  If Cowls purpose in Dead Beat was to gain power and to defeat death, his actions read differently if by death you mean the Adversary.

I'm still not convinced the objective of ending death was ever anything more to him than a useful lie. Kumori's got a bit of a screw loose on that particular topic, so acting like that's what he wants the power of the Darkhallow for keeps her loyal and helpful. He sure as hell didn't intend on immortality for everyone, even if he might have granted it to a few.

Though now that you bring up the comparison between death and the Adversary, it does have some interesting resonance to Lea looking back on having been arrogant to think she could take the infected knife and defeat "that which stalks us all"...

I'd think Fox was more likely to mess it up than SciFi did.

Or if they managed to produce something good, cancel it right away.

    • Anyone can learn magic(WoJ). John can learn magic and can gain power. By using all the ways Harry has been tempted with and one more. He could make a deal with outsiders.

I'm afraid the most obvious problem is that while it's theoretically possible Marcone could learn to do some modest magic, he and Cowl were simultaneously present on opposite sides of the fight at the Raith Deeps in White Night. He also saved Harry from Corpsetaker and her ghoul in DB, while Cowl was later skeptical of Harry's claim to have escaped a confrontation with her alive.

Besides which, we've seen Marcone's inner monologue in one of the shorts - he has a working knowledge of magic and how to counter it with circles, water, etc., but he pays Monoc and Gard as consultants because he actually needs them, not just as a cover.

I doubt at this point he'd even need to tap soulfire; Winter has given him more than enough to do the job. The same tricks of summoning ice and driving it into the opponent that he used on Ariana and Nicodemus would work as long as the projectiles are ballistic by the time they hit his protection. Lord Raith is running on fumes at this point - Harry would have to be coming into it near exhaustion already to run out of gas to keep throwing strikes before Raith ran out of gas to heal.

Raith with the ability to feed recovered vs soulfire Harry though? That might be interesting. I think Harry would have to have an insight how to actually get around the outsider sponsored protection to make that version work.

Expanse... I enjoyed the first book, the second not as much, and found the show to be more entertaining (I sometimes struggle with too many textual viewpoints/protagonists)

I thought the show was / is actually a very close adaptation. But I guess TV as a medium covers switching between characters a little differently than text.

With the other characters, it's a bit easier to see where they could go. Guess I'll talk about Molly first. It'd be great if her life was more positive without Harry in it, ironically enough. I do like the idea of Warden Molly and I can't remember who posted it, but they thought that Morgan as Molly's mentor would make them an interesting pair of antagonists. It could work if Morgan met the Carpenter family through Harry, and Morgan would be the one to take an interest in Molly when she shows her wizard powers. This means Molly would never end up a warlock.

Quite a few of us have speculated on Warden Molly as Morgan's apprentice. I could see it if Michael dies and Charity and Molly blame Harry, to the extent that manifesting her powers is taken as a 'sign from God' that she's meant to be the one to take !Harry down, and she reaches out to the Council and Morgan for the training to do it.

Bad news: Over the years I read a lot while waiting for new Dresden. Do you have anything interestimg to read on same genre?

Benedict Jacka's Alex Verus series is very similar in genre, if you haven't got there yet.

If you're flexible enough on genre to look to some SF, The Expanse is really good. 7 books and 3 seasons of the TV adaptation so far.

From what was in the book, it seemed that Mavra was not targeting the Raiths, but was happy to take them out along with Harry.

Marva wasn't even seriously trying to take out Harry. If she'd wanted him dead, she had at least the chance to cap him from behind a veil instead of collecting blackmail polaroids for later. Or just pitched a rock through his head at a considerable fraction of the speed of sound rather than send minions to threaten him.

At most, sending her progeny after him to provoke him into attacking the nest was analogous to Mab's tests or Mother Winter's display with the cleaver. The point isn't to kill him, but if he fails to handle a little challenge it just shows he wasn't worth manipulating after all.

For her to increase significantly in power due to learning, there would need to be a breakthrough in human knowledge, imo.

Well she's immediately getting a pipeline of every new insight any Council wizard writes down in their notebooks. And given the proclivity for keeping secrets, a lot of them might not share individual techniques they come up with.
