FaerieCon East
November 8th-10th
Baltimore, MD
Now in it’s sixth year, FaerieCon East remains the largest gathering of faerie artists and authors in the world. And this year, we are making a number of changes and and additions to make your FaerieCon experience even more fun, informative and inspiring. The FaerieCon universe continues to expand to embrace fantasy, steampunk, goth, metaphysics and many other genres who enjoy sharing their diverse interests and passions throughout the weekend.

Must find a way to predispose Mrs Serack towards spending time in Baltimore in November...
-
Anyone know how crazy this will be? Debating going to either this or Dragoncon, since they are roughly equidistant to Raleigh. But Dragoncon was just waaaaay too crowded for me. I'm wondering if this would be the same.
-
Nowhere near as big as D*C.

Nowhere near as big as D*C.
Hmm, this might work for me, then. Plus Nov 9 is my bday, so it'd be a perfect time to get away. If we can figure out childcare. :)
-
Ack, no... Too expensive. :( oh well.
-

Ack! :o Yah that's not conducive to predisposing...
-
Hmm, the exhibits pass is only $45. That's not soooo bad. I though that was only the dealership room, but it looks like it only leaves out two masquerades (which I wouldn't go to anyway), and "special events." Wonder what those are...
-
Where would you be coming from, Serack? Maybe we could carpool to save expenses? Might help predispose our significant others. ;)
-
Got hotel room using priceline, name your own price, for $60! Asked for 3 stars in the hunt valley, md area, which should only get you the residence inn. Not so pricey now! Sold parents on childcare with the whole "40th birthday" thing, and we are good to go!

I suspect a Jim Butcher Q&A would qualify as a "special event" these cons also tend to have "panels" where various authors or other subject matter experts discuss things. At this event I suspect they would have a panel named something like, "Faries in urban fantasy."

The Hampton Roads area is a little out of the way from the Raleigh area, but if we could coordinate well, we might meet up in Richmond and travel on together from there.
Mrs Serack seems kinda game, but she would want to take Lil Serack to an indoor water park or something, and we can't find one in the area. Anyone know of any other stuff that a mommy can take a *counts on his fingers* 21 month old to in the Baltimore area?
-
I saw there was a zoo nearby and an aquarium. We were debating bringing the kids, but 4 is a bit harder than 1!
-
The ad for the convention hotel mentions some more fun things.
http://www.huntvalleyinn.com/
Or here's some other ideas:
http://baltimore.about.com/od/landmarksattractions/tp/Things-To-Do-With-Kids-In-Baltimore.htm
Bill and I might swing by DC too and do the tourist thing.
-
We went on a mini vacation last week in DC, and went on a quick jaunt on the second night up to Baltimore to visit with one of her HS friends that moved up to that area.
The friend and her BF expect to be living in a bigger place in November and she wanted us to come up and stay, so it might be a possibility that I can make it.
-
Anyone know when the schedules for these cons are posted? I don't want to buy tickets for all days if Jim is only going to be there for one of them.
Thanks!
-
I can't find any previous schedules. Try contacting the con and asking when the schedule will be posted?

I believe there are only 2 kinds of tickets for Faerie con. One for access to the entire thing, and one for some of the main events. My limited con experience is that Jim will probably be involved in the starting ceremonies all the way to the end.

I thought it was the reverse? One ticket covers everything, and one covers most everything but a few special things?

Take out Some and we are pretty much saying the same thing. It's been a little while since I visited the site.

Yeah, me too. So have you figured out if you can go? :)
-
We are going. Are there any plans for a fan dinner?

Any news on what the boss man is going to be doing at the con yet? I check regularly but haven't seen a posted schedule yet. And do you mean dinner as in 'with the boss man and fans'?!?
-
Not sure about either. Either or both would be fun though.
-
His schedule has been posted on the Faerie Con website (http://faeriecon.com/convention-information/programming/)!
Friday November 8th
2-3pm = “Heroes & the Other Guys: Creating Protagonists & Antagonists” with Jim Butcher
Saturday November 9th
1-1:45pm = Seelie & Unseelie: Choosing Sides in Faerie with Jim Butcher, deLint, Marr Zettel
2-3pm = Spotlight on Jim Butcher
Sunday November 10th
11:30am-12:15pm = Faerie in the Marketplace (authors): Owen, Grant, Jim Butcher, Marr

Does anyone know which type of admission is required to see Jim at all of his posted events? I'm assuming the expensive one, but it doesn't say anywhere on the schedule that a specific pass is required.
-

There is a really neat children's museum near Inner Harbor called Port Discovery. My daughter and I spent a day there before.

Thanks! You know what, I think we saw that when we visited there back in June. It was after dark when we walked by of course.
Prices for hotels went up shortly after Stiletto snagged those $60 rooms. It looks as though we won't be going unless Mrs. Serack's friend in Balt is willing and able to host us.

As far as I can tell when I looked, I assume the single day pass is the one we need. It includes admission to the days exhibit halls and programming. Mr. Butcher is listed under the "programming" so I assume that type of pass covers him. At least, I hope it does since its the one I was planning on purchasing! More than likely, I will email Faerie Con staff shortly just to be sure. ;)

http://faeriecon.com/ (http://faeriecon.com/)
Two quick Questions:
What day would be the best to come out?
Is there a chance of stealing Jim for a Fan Dinner like MarsCon? <-- Subtle Emphasis...
Here's the link to their schedule:
http://faeriecon.com/convention-information/programming/ (http://faeriecon.com/convention-information/programming/)
But I think I've pulled out the interesting bits below:
Friday November 8th
- 2:00-3:00 (Tack Suite) Jim Butcher “Heroes and the Other Guys: Creating Protagonists and Antagonists”
- 5:00-6:00 (Tack Suite) Author Tea: Drop by and see who’s hanging out.
Saturday November 9th
- 1:00 – 1:45 (Salon A) Seelie and Unseelie: Choosing Sides in Faerie: Jim Butcher, Charles deLint, Melissa Marr, Sarah Zettel
- 2:00-3:00 (Garden Room) Spotlight on Jim Butcher
Sunday November 10th
- 11:30 – 12:15 (Salon A) Faerie in the Marketplace (Authors): James Owen, Gavin Grant, Jim Butcher, Melissa Marr
-

Heck, I may not be going now... not sure if my parents will be up to taking care of the kids, due to some health issues. :( If I can't go though, I may be selling that (prepaid!) room and tickets tho.
-
I'll be there on Saturday if anyone wants to do dinner or if they find out anything about a fan dinner.
-
I'm not sure what these $30 balls include, but they may be dinners too, and I know some are planning on attending that.
-
I have never attended a "con", so I'm extremely geeked for FaerieCon next week ;D I'd love to meet up with other fans, as well! Cheers!
-
Looks like I should be good to go! :)
-
Keep us posted on their reply if you do e-mail them! It would be awesome if the day pass is all we need!
Well, the Faerie Con staff never replied to my email so I bought the single adult day pass for Saturday. It's listed for "days exhibit halls and programming" and his stuff is listed under the programming so that should cover it. (Or it had better since they never responded to me!)
I have yet to see anything about additional Butcher stuff like a dinner or autograph signings though.

I'm not confident I understand things right, but I think there will be 2 "Balls" one Friday and one Saturday which aren't covered by the day passes. I know there will be live music at these, and I'm guessing that there will be food too but I am not sure about that part. If there is food and they are expecting Jim to be at them, then that would make organizing a fan dinner problematic.
I promised Mrs. Serack at least one night at a nice dinner, and I was hoping it would be with a bunch of other forum fans and Jim, but I'm not sure how that's going to play out.
-
I'm in for any Friday socializing / dinner. Didn't plan to attend the "Balls" as I figured I might be all faerie'd out by the end of each day ha ha. I'd rather chill in the hotel bar or find a nicer - quieter dinner spot.
I'm gigging Saturday night in Philly, so won't be staying the second night...
-
Does anyone know if Jim will be doing a signing at this event? There's an "Author spotlight" session, but it is not clear what this includes.
The page on Jim says, "Jim will be participating in our programming and will attend book signing sessions."
http://faeriecon.com/international-best-selling-dresden-files-author-jim-butcher-comes-to-faeriecon-east/
Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.
-
Q: Will Jim be doing any signings?
A: I would assume there will be an opportunity(ies), but they've not been put on a schedule anywhere. If they announce anything during the convention itself, I will post here.
Q: Fan dinner?
A: I dunno that we'll be able to get Jim in on a dinner (maybe, we'll see what happens), but I'm looking into restaurants for a dinner group on Saturday evening. Probably somewhere in the 6-6:30 range (don't think we'll be able to do anything with a large group, as it's incredibly last-minute, but we'll see). Again, as soon as I know anything concrete, I will post here.
Other Things
As you've probably gathered, I will be attending the con. If you want to hang out during the day/catch up on whatever updates/etc, look for the skinny guy in vivid green scrubs. I'm thinking about running a one-shot DFRPG game one night if that's a thing people might be interested in.
As I said, I'll put updates in this thread as much as I can. I'll also tweet any updates as I have them at @myyrdneopia.
I hope to see some of you all there. Please come say "hi!"
-
My husband and I are up for dinner and role playing! I'm not sure what I'll be wearing yet. No costume, but look for the heavyset redhead with shaggy short hair (overdue for a haircut) and a denarius necklace. ;)
-
Today I'll be wearing blue jeans and a faux-wrap shirt, with swirls of tan and green, plus the blackened denarius necklace. ;)
-

Hmm, I didn't know the 2 pm thing today was a workshop. Wonder if there is a signup sheet? If there is, or any other things you can sign up for with JB, could someone sign me up if they get there first? We won't be there til around 1. Celia and Bill Visser. Thanks!!! :)
-
Um? Is there a change in the location of his 2pm event? The room it's supposed to be on - tack room - is dark, empty, and not set up.
-
Ok people came and set up so hopefully we're in the right place.
-
I'll be coming with a large group of friends tomorrow for the day (and all the Butcher events!). And, at least at this point, we're all coming dressed as Dresden characters. I'll be dressed as Murphy!

Also, for those of us eating healthy, there is an Outback just down the road from the Con if Mr. Butcher is so inclined to join us for vitals and libations afterwards tomorrow. ;D

This is what I got from the staff today, yep.
-
Anyone hanging in the hotel tonight? I'm not going to the ball, so...
I'm wearing a hells bells Tshirt so please say hi :). So cool meeting Jim today!
-
Nawww... Went to see Thor. Hoping to do DFRPG and maybe fan dinner tomorrow though.
-
This is what I got from the staff today, yep.
I have actually never been to a signing in my life, so this will be my first one. So, can anyone be so kind as to explain to me how it goes? Do you bring your own books to get signed, or will he only sign them if you bought them at the bookstore that day? And usually, how many does he sign? Thanks!
-
Went today. Jim's talk was awesome. I'll be the guy walking around with a dude dressed as Harry. I'm the Will Borden to his Harry Dresden.
See y'all tomorrow, folks!
-
I think he'll sign any book. If lines are long probably two might be polite (Though you could get in line again for more.). You can also chat
briefly, ask a question, and maybe take a pic, depending on his preferences/local rules.

As A rule Jim will defer to the rules of the con. That said his rule of thumb is to sign 3 books per trip through line. so if you have 6 books get 3 signed then get back in line to get the next 3 signed. Myyrdn (Garrett) is a good guide for this, he's been to quite a few of these and is a great guy to boot.

D'awww shucks. :D
I'll find out from con staff ASAP tomorrow how they want to work it, and post here.
-
Wandering around downstairs now. Wondering where everyone is...
-
Well, things don't get started til after lunch, it looks like, so personally, I'm at B&N ;) I hope to be in the garden room upstairs at noon for Sarah Zettel's meet the author event, then will go to the Seelie/unseelie panel that jb's on at 1, and of course his spotlight at 2ish.
I'm wearing black pants, a swirly black/blueish shirt, a blackened denarius on a necklace, and will probably have a green-ish blue open front sweater over the ensemble. ;)
-
Serack, are you here yet? (Is that you dressed as Billy the werewolf?)
-

Sorry, stuff came up and I didn't make it. Say hi to Aaron Toemas and Garrett (ME) for me if you get a chance :)
-
Most everyone here probably got word already, but during this weekend's signings, Jim is signing just one book per pass though the line.
-

If you're talking about the University of Chicago T-shirt, that was probably me!
-
What a cool weekend! I enjoyed meeting many of you & just being in the room with so many Jim fans :D (I was in the Dark Lily costume on Saturday.) I hope you all had a great time as well. Safe travels! ~Nicki

Please post your con pictures here. (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,34022.0.html)

If anyone goes back to Faeriecon next year, try the Residence Inn Baltimore Hunt Valley. Full kitchen with granite counters, dishes, dishwasher, builtin microwave, 3/4 fridge! They will even buy groceries for you with no extra charge. Swiveling flat screen tv. Free hot delicious breakfast! Probably one of the best hotels I've ever stayed at... And I used priceline name your own price to get it for half the price of the Hunt Valley Inn. Thank you, Captain Kirk. ;)

The sad news is that Jim's son is no longer looking at medical school, so less of a chance of going back to Alera/Dresden after the series ends.
-
Heh, that was me saying, "Where's ours?" in the beginning. I'm such a bad girl. ;D
