DFRPG / Hypnotism in DFRPG
« on: November 12, 2012, 01:25:40 PM »
So I'm going to be playing a charlatan in a 19th century exploration game in the Dresden Files system, and I intend to be using sleight of hand, suggestion and hypnotism to convince people that my character has 'voodoo' powers. Most of this is easily handled with deceit, performance and intimidation with a few stunts but I'm stuck on hypnotism: I can't work out how to model it. I assume I'd need a stunt of some kind under deceit and have 'Hypnotism' be a new trapping, but how would it work? I want it to be at least mostly realistic, so it certainly wouldn't be a mental attack - hypnotism works mostly with the unknowing cooperation of the subject. Manoeuvres  on the other hand wouldn't allow me to use long term anchoring, or suggestions.

I don't want to complicate things too much, but I would like a reasonable model for hypnotism to show my DM, who has already okayed the concept. Any help or suggestions are welcome.

DFRPG / Item of Power: Utility Belt
« on: September 29, 2012, 02:11:34 PM »
I was looking at the highly versatile custom power Incite Effect for a mildly superhuman character in a Superheroes game I'm in and he's been using his nano-technological skills to fill a batman style utility belt with various grenades and gizmos. After a couple of sessions though, I came up with the idea of using Incite Effect rather than dozens of craftsmanship and resources declarations.

Basically it would be
Item of Power: Utility Belt [+2]
-Feeding Dependency: Refills [+1]
--Incite Effect [-?]

The feeding dependency seems like a surprisingly elegant way to run out of grenades and such, or have devices run out of juice - though a stunt to move the hunger track to Resources might be in order. I'd use the optional rule to scale down powers with stress, so I could lose 'Incite Mass Effect' when I gain hunger stress from using area attacks.  The main worry I have is the last optional power: Incite Additional Effect. What exactly counts as an additional effect and is 'gadgets' much too broad?

Effects I had in mind: Flash-bang style zone manoeuvres, smoke bombs, electrical stun darts, mini high-explosive grenades. Other possibilities are things like miniature: cutting torches, grapnel hooks or gas masks.

Thanks in advance.

DFRPG / Greatest Martial Artist
« on: March 06, 2012, 03:29:19 PM »
Hey guys, I'm going to be playing a (mostly mortal) superhero in an upcoming game a friend is running with the DFRPG system, and I'm finding myself struggling with Fists stunts. Some of them seem obvious, but with Inhuman Speed the defensive ones seem almost pointless.

So, the point of the thread: If you were to make the greatest martial artist ever, with the DFRPG system, what stunts would you take?

Thanks in advance for the help.

DFRPG / Speed and Method of Evocation . . . without Sponsored Magic?
« on: January 21, 2012, 02:14:34 PM »
I did a search, but nothing came up so I'm sorry if this has already been answered.

How much refresh would you price Thaumaturgy with the speed and methods of Evocation by itself, with none of the other trappings? Would it be balanced at all?

DFRPG / Fun With Mind Reading
« on: March 25, 2011, 04:37:23 PM »
So, I asked for help a little while ago with a 'Thought Projection' power, the ability for a character to send speak mentally to other characters at distance, and people were very helpful. Now though, I'm thinking of dropping the Mythic Speed Power the character has* and taking an actual Mind Reading power**, and fleshing out the character's Telepathy.

Some requirements for this. Firstly, I don't want any strange new mechanisms, I don't want to be rolling weird contested things or to have a hunger track. I mostly want something like a few stunts mashed together, with some supernatural trappings. Secondly, I'd rather it wasn't invasive; there are no laws in this setting, but invasive mind powers are still icky. The only idea I have so far, is to base it on something like 'Read The Surface (YS:152)', but possibly faster.

Thanks for any help, in advance.

The power I'm adding this to:
Quote
Thought Projection. [-2]
The bearer gains the ability to communicate mentally with anyone he has met.

*It's a 14 refresh game, based on another long running game we've converted over to the system.
**See above, laws don't exist in this setting.

DFRPG / Mental Communication and Attacks.
« on: March 12, 2011, 04:32:20 PM »
Not sure this is the right place to ask, since this isn't strictly a DFRPG question; but after the recent success on a DFRPG game our group decided to shift the Fireborn system, which despite its faults we have a long running game with, to the DFRPG FATE system. It's been a lot of work but it looks like it'll be worth it.

My question though, is of mental communication. My character in the Fireborn game could talk mentally, at any distance, to anyone he'd met. How would such a power work? The basic idea of talking to someone mentally seems like a -1 refresh power, since it's not much different from talking - almost a magical stunt, but the idea of silent communication at any distance seems like it would be a problem. I've had a look at zones, but I'm still not sure how to cost this.

On another note, I was going to add a mental attack to the character, as a line of sight attack that attacked the mental stress bar. How would such an attack be written out, and costed?

Thanks in advance for any help.
