Calendar Event Discussion / Re: ConDFW in Richardson, TX: Feb 20-22, 2009
« on: October 02, 2008, 10:52:14 PM »
We're loading the car for Fencon as we speak (despite the fact that it's a 15 minute drive from our house and being there before noon tomorrow would just be silly). Look for us in the dealer room behind the table with the pretty chain maille jewelry! I'm looking forward to meeting people, but rarely get out and about before the filking begins, which is the other place to look for me!

Mickey are you involved with this con? If so, do you know if there is dealer space available? We like to defray our convention going costs a bit, being cheap bastards. :)

Looking forward to sharing my first of probably many many ConDFWs with Jim! So moving to Texas isn't ALL bad I guess.  ;)

I'm just bored to death with vampires and werewolves. There are so many better mythos out there to work with! Be creative, author peoples!

Just open up your mind and write whatever wants to flow out.

I'm in for another year. No clue what sort of project this time round...we'll see what comes out of my head come Nov. 1st.

Yes, those words have become loan words in English, but not in the context that they were originally meant. I fail to see any reason for avoiding "exotic" terms in an alternate world where our rules don't necessarily apply.

I still say stick to your guns Tasmin! It makes your world richer! Anyone who can't deal with it can go read Jackie Collins or John Grisham novels.  :P

currently co-authoring a sourcebook for an rpg with my husband. And you know what? It's a huge pain in the ass trying to work around history of the game world that you don't know about but some people assume you do. Also trying to build a language from random words someone years ago made up because they "sounded Elvish" and have no basis in linguistic reality.

Any other conlangers out there?

Why not just make up words in english?  Plus, I think working on a similar set-up as words that do mean king queen prince princess (i.e.  tsar, tsarina, tsarevitch, etc, which your titles reminded me of) may have the exact effect you were hoping to avoid.

dare I mention here that those are not English words?

If I hear any of these busines-BS words again, I'll have to come up with number 11 which is practice kung fu on faux business types:
leverage
low hanging fruit (honestly)
standard deviation
six sigma
Business process improvement
outliers
scaling
"spans and layers" (ie who to lay off?),

Hair of the dog, people!

I've never heard any of those words to begin with. Until now. Thanks so much! :oP

Tasmin, I think if people are so easily tripped up by terms that are not really even foreign in nature, but follow English word forms and should be easily understood in context, well...I have to wonder why they are reading a fantasy story.

I don't think you have at this point, any need of so much as a footnote, much less an appendix. Although I do enjoy fantasy novels with worlds so complex and full of so MANY characters and languages (as long as they are well constructed and not just made up words) that you need appendices.

DFRPG / Re: Alignment?

I'd have to argue that

I have to argue that too. If Thomas was unprincipled he wouldn't have had to give up his family and wealth and changed his entire lifestyle. And Justine would be d-e-d dead.

*smile* indeed. I read, I has not much to contribute. I wait. I TRY to be patient. But is not in my nature.
