DF Books / Re: Did you discover the books because of the TV Show?
« on: February 23, 2007, 12:31:26 AM »
I actually discovered the books via post production of the pilot before the re-shoots and edits. Was working at a small FX company in Toronto at the time that was doing preliminary test shots. I think they got the first season FX contract, I'm not sure as things got slow and they laid off a few people several months before the series started shooting. Now I'm just a reader and avid fan of Jim's. I wouldn't have it any other way as far as discovering his work is concerned, it was a great experience.

What are your thoughts on the reviews claiming the show is trying to be a post Whedonesk series or needs to be? I personally think the show is finding its own indentity regardless of the bar Buffy and Angel added to the whole laugh in the face of evil and then go cry to mamma when you've defeated it storylines. Before anyone gets insulted by the previous comment, I loved both shows. I just can't express myself without coming off as an ass.

Firstly, was there any presure from the Canadian film board to give it that "filmed in Canada" feel? A lot of Canadian dramas have a certain look and feel to how they translate stories to film and Dresden had that  feel to it for me. Hopefully that isn't taken negatively as that was not my intent.

Secondly, as I've read final draft to the Storm Front script, is that being re-arranged as the season final as episodes 10-11 or a possible cliffhanger?

Keep up the great work all of you. I really enjoyed the first episode and look forward to adding it to my collection when released on DVD.

Wish so many budding writers around the world, how can one be sure they are not taking character names or places from published works without their knowledge? I've googled character names and cities I've written about with no luck. Is there a fantasy database online one can check for these things?

Well my last name is always mis-pronounced as flesh so I'm often teased of having a prono star name. I still go by it as I like my name.

It seems I have a fear of writing (which is ironic as I'm writing about it). I wrote this childrens fantasy (lyricly - I always write a poetic outline first) that I can't get out of my head. Everywhere I turn, I'm reminded of these characters in my head but I can't bring myself to write any prose as I just don't feel confident enough to do so. If I can't get it out of my mind, am I supposed to write this or is it trying to write itself through me and I'm resisting?

Hi, my name's Paul and I'm not an aspiring procrastinator -- I've mastered that trade. I'm not sure if I should be writing childrens books because my writing is quite unpolished and reads as though it's written by a young writer even though I'm in my 30's. Growing up I always wanted to be a comic book writer/artist, the artist half wasn't good enough for the industry, so I consintrated mostly on poetry. I don't have a lot of them in the span of 12 years (maybe around 150) but a lot of them are conceptual in nature that could be fleshed out into prose if I just jumped in to give it a shot. I'm still a little apprenhensive, the last story I wrote was from the perspective of an orange.

Hey everyone!

I participated in a screenplay writing contest over at www.nycmidnight.com and thought I'd share my entry with you all for kicks. We were all put in different heats and given a topic to write about. Mine was horror/gambling. If you're interested, it can be viewed here: www.scenariohead.ca/16_undercity_khan.htm
