I've always enjoyed the Dune universe. Herbert had such a terrific way of showing exactly the inner connectedness of all the planets involved, even the minor ones. You knew who was with who and everything in between

Ok, the next part of my question is this:

Does music have any influence in the things you write, or how you write?

It's true, you see it all the time. You see it in writing, in music, in Television (I can name a certain show here but I'm sure other's will mention it). Studios and Publishers put out and advertise what they think can be marketable. They try to hedge their bets as much as they can

Hey gang, more questions from the clueless wonder.

For years, everytime I hear music, I can see scenes of stories in my head. In fact, most of my novel is derived through one point or another through music. It's to the point where it's incorporated into some of the dialouge, and the music itself is written in lyric form and even discuss it at to an extent.

Now, for those of you in the biz, if I want to get this novel published, do I need to get copyright from the singer/writers of these songs? Or by citing them in the novel itself, am I covering myself?

Author Craft / Re: Melee Combat, little help here...

I'm a blackbelt in Jujistu, the unarmed kind they teach cops in New York. That being said it reflects much in the unarmed combat scenes in my stories. It can get technical, and sometimes you can get lost in the words. That's when I decided to blend technical realism with poetic liberties. It kinda closes all the gaps and adds to the imagery.

I suggest the fight scenes in the Dune series, especially the Original Dune. It gets down to it without getting stuck down in it. Also, I am a disciple of Frank Herbert.

I also agree with Corvidian, if your either of your characters are mouthy, let them get real mouthy, it adds to the tension.

I'm all for writing for writing's sake, but some people like to add a message in their stories. Lord knows I do.

In answer to the OP, I think the ending should in some way incorporate at least one of your messages.

I'll give you a for instance. Dune, highest grossing Sci-Fi novel ever. It ends with Jessica, who was not married to her son's father but rather his concubine whom he considered a wife, telling Chani, who is about to be put in the same position, that "She may bear his name, but history will call us 'Wives'"

Hope this helped

1 novella (my first work), an inprogress novel, and I've written two episodes (broken down into about 11 chapters) of shorts stories based on the Matrix Online, so those count as 4. Then I have more short stories based on the novel than I care to think about :D

oh, and for the record, I detest Michael Moore. I agree with what he says, but he says it in such a way that it's vulgar.

I wouldn't consider Dan Brown to be a shock monger...at least, not until I read his next book.

It is more or less a look inside this character's reasoning why he is the way he is. The main character was a victim of systematic psychological abuse (to the point where it can be defined as Rape) and neglect from those in charge. Later in life, he meets a person like him (it's a fantasy setting) who has been sexually abused by several men over the course of her life, and he asks her two questions: Do you want to use your pain, or be used by it? and Where do you want to go from here?

Author Craft / Controversial Topics
« on: August 10, 2007, 01:00:42 PM »
Hey guys, I've been working on this novel for a while now, and as a practice I've been writing short stories that help develop my main character and the world around him.

In one of the stories I write about Rape (both sexual and mental) and the overlying choices that the victims has afterwards, to either let it consume them or to use the pain inflicted on them as a source of strength.

Now, I've written about alot of the things my age group (college age) is known for, drinking, drugs, and morals as strong as kleenex in a monsoon. But this is by far the darkest I've delved.

My question is, have you ever written on a controversial topic? What was your experience writing it? Of people Reading it?

Well, I figured I'm going to write the story, just to get the damned thing done with. Then Tool with it when I work on the manuscript.

Yeah, I'm discovering the same thing, except this is just a difference of a few months. I think it's just that I've gotten used to the world and some of the rules in it. The first few chapters were only a few pages long and only really scratched the surface. Now my chapters are at least in the 20's and go into alot more depth

I asked someone this question once, she replied simply, and in a matter that reminded me of Steve Zissou, "Revenge"

bless her zombie bones...

I see the scene in crystal quality in my head. Everytime I finish a scene, unless I'm not satisfied with it, it more or less is gone from my vision, because it's not there anymore, it's on the page. I'm pouring my scene out onto the page

I noticed that there was a question mark next to July as the month for Proven Guilty. In case no one else has I confirmed it, it is July
