DFRPG / Re: Emissary of Lady Luck
« on: September 18, 2010, 02:10:43 AM »
I have a simple -2 refresh power for one of my players. "Minor Fey Luck;" which gives a character a free re-roll twice a game session. The only limitations are that they have to keep the second roll and that it can't be used on the same skill attempt or in the same scenario more than once.

That's cool; I like the concept of a former ballplayer with magic and an axe to grind against the Red Court.

I have a wizard who uses "time" as one of his elements, and a fob watch as his focus.

Alright...I know that there has been some mention of the movie "Candyman."

But it bears a re-mention, especially in the DFRPG universe and this thread in particular, as it is rooted in the Chi.

But rather than repost what has been done, I'll just post links to the info here:

Wikipedia Article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candyman_%28film%29

IMDB Article: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103919/

The Forbidden (original Clive Barker short story): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Books_of_Blood#The_Forbidden

This stuff is golden for a DFRPG campaign; tell me it ain't!

DFRPG / Re: Trouble aspects are the hardest
« on: July 31, 2010, 04:10:23 AM »
Naw, man...trouble is easy as all heck. Just pick a real-life problem, magnify it by two or more, and you're done!

Seriously, it is not nearly as difficult to come up with a primary complication for a character. The problem that I'm seeing a lot of people having is that they are trying to come up with "fantastic" or "extraordinary" complications. The crap that ordinary people go through can still be problematic enough for a heroic character; just remember that heroic people have the same problems that regular people have...it's just that their problems are more heroic in scale.

Substance abuse:
"Just another hit will get me through the day..."
"Gin makes a man mean...."

Dependents/Family problems:
"Rebellious teenagers suck"
"Lone Wolf (Wizard) and Cub"
"My ex is a bloodsucking vampire (figuratively/literally- choose one)"

And that's just off of the top of my head....

Have fun with it and they'll come together.

Hey there! I got that book too!

Anyway, I'm doing this because I want to contribute to the milieu that is being built around this game and game world. Please chip in and help...this is a cool idea and I think that the more of us who get involved, the better it will become.

DFRPG / About Occult Chicago
« on: July 30, 2010, 10:46:16 PM »
Just finished "Our World;" and I thought that it was awesome in the context of the DFU. However, being a Chicago resident, I have to admit that I'm a bit "sensitive" about my city being written about. Ken Hite (who I didn't know was also a fellow resident), definitely got the feeling and energy of our home on point. I'm more than a little passionate about my home, so when I first saw the Dresden Files series and found it was set here, I was excited and then when I found that a game would be coming out based on Butcher's work, I nearly exploded.

I've purchased both of the game books and I'm in the process of trying to sell it to my gaming group. I've enjoyed what I've read so far I can't wait to get a game going.

Anyway, getting back to the Occult Chicago segment, Ken did a great job merging real and DFU Chicago, but however and to be honest, Chicago (especially in the context of the DRU) deserves it's own book. I would imagine that Ken had a limited amount of space to work, so he touched on the most notable neighborhoods in the city. I do love that he made mention of Resurrection Mary, La Llorona, and the Hull House Devil Baby. But there is so much more...so very much.

So, with that in mind, I want to start an "Occult Chicago" thread on this forum, so other players who want to run their DFRPG games in the Chi, can draw on more info to flesh out their games. As a resident of the "City of Big Shoulders," I feel that this is something that I can do. If my city is going to be represented, then it has to be done right. JB, Ken Hite and the rest of the Evil Hat crew got the ball rolling, but I felt that rather than complaining about what was missing, I should contribute and build on what they constructed. If anyone else here wants to pitch in, feel free.

What I propose for the thread is that folks can post historical notes, other supernatural legends, or links to sites where relevant research has been done. Finally, I'd like to see fan/player developed stuff set in Chicago be posted here as well.

In addition, I'd like to see residents of other cities do similar threads for their own homes.

With all of the above being said, I might as well get started.

How many folks here knew that part of Lincoln Park used to be a cemetery? The part bounded by Clark St., North Ave., Burton Place, and Dearborn Pkwy, as well as an area north of North Ave, used to be a cemetery. In 1860, the land was commissioned to become a public park, so when the developers came in to begin clearing the land, little did they know that there were a large number of unmarked graves in the earth there, but more than a century later, the truth came out. When the Chicago Historical Society decided to break ground for a new edition, the construction crew discovered a very large number of human remains.

So, what would happen if those spirits decided to get up in arms?

Possible aspects for Lincoln Park, Chicago:
"Who has disturbed our eternal rest?" (Agitated spirits in Lincoln Park)
"The dead have their own history (Chicago Historical Society Building)"
"So, what do a few dead folks matter when we stand to make a profit? (Contractors who did the CHS edition)"

Okay...I'll try to post more at least weekly.

I like the "diminishing returns" concept, but I would like the player to be able to have his character for awhile. Thanks for the input, guys.

BTW, I had the first of my "white wolf" arguments with one of my potential players. She's already chafing under the idea that she can't play a vampire and kill at her leisure. She's not liking the fact that the vampires are actually "teh bad guyz" in the DFU and she's giving me the "teh vampz aren't all bad" speech.

I'll keep posting with updates...

TYVM again for your input and advice!

DFRPG / Re: Rules question: Living dead and Inhuman Recovery
« on: July 26, 2010, 10:43:09 PM »
Hi this might be simple but I wanted to know how it works.

A character has taken Living dead (He is playing a Crow like character)
Under that power Corpse Body it says that you cannot recover from consequences and any you get are permanent unless you take some kind of effort to resolve them.

Now if this character take Inhuman Recovery can he heal consequences?

Going by the wording alone I would rule The following.

Total recovery wouldn't work because it says all you need is time and Living Dead says you do not heal with time.
Fast recovery wouldn't work for the same reasons.
Vigorous would work
Shrug it off would work as it has no restrictions you just ignore it.

Does this sound right or does purchasing Inhuman Recovery totally ignore the restrictions from Living Dead?

Thanks in advance

The only problem with the whole "consume something" concept is that "Crows" are not vampiric/ghoulish type entities. If anything, they are reanimated spirits of vengeance. The only way that I can see the "consuming" angle work is that they regain their "energy" by finding/killing their targets or other evil beings who are attached to their targets. That however, would be limited fare for such a character.

With that being said, according to the overlying tenet of the game (free will vs. nature), a crow could not be a player character for one simple reason; crows are driven by their nature which is the pursuit of vengeance against the person/people who killed them and their loved one/ones. A crow cannot choose not to kill their targets (please forget the stupid television show with Marc Dacasos...I'm talking about the concept according to Barr). Once a crow has slain their target(s), then their time on Earth is done and they have to return to the afterlife.

I allowed a player to play a crow-like character in a WoD game. The problem was that the player became attached to the character and the power and kept trying to put off taking vengeance against her killers. That is the one thing that a crow can't deny; seeking vengeance.

You can do what you want, ultimately; it's your game. But those are my thoughts on the subject. It's up to you and good luck either way with your game, mate!

DFRPG / Red Court Infected/Vampires and "Vegetarianism"
« on: July 24, 2010, 10:26:11 PM »
I just got the system (both books) and I'm having the time of my life reading and learning the game.

But to get to topic, I have a player interested in playing a Red Court Infected, but he has concerns about blood and feeding and I have no idea what to tell him. I know that I can easily make my own ruling on the issue, but I would like to know what is canon regarding the topic.

I know that if a Red Court Infected feeds and kills, then they are considered to have given completely in to their vampire nature and the player loses their character. But what about vampires who choose not to kill humans; considering the general idea of what happens "in nature," would their feeding on animals constitute a total concession to their nature, turning them into monsters?

I just want to anticipate questions because what I have are a bunch of "WoD" players and JB's concept of a magical world definitely conflict with what they are used to. I know that I could just be a "hard-ass" and say; "This ain't White Wolf; get over it!" But they are pretty good players and I'd rather just win them over.

TYVM, in advance!
