We will need to find a new home for the Forum by the end of the year. So help us out. This is an excerpt from above link from Iago's call to action.
o, as the subject line indicates... I think it's time to move on.
The question for you all, then, is "to where?" And honestly, I don't have a clear answer because I'm an old dog, and I just don't use Facebook that much, which is probably where the majority of fandom activity is happening right now. So I need to turn this question over to you all.
On Twitter, y'all should be following https://twitter.com/jimbutchernews as that's the main site's newsfeed in tweet form.
On Facebook... what groups should we point people to? Leave links in your replies to this post.
On Google Plus... same question! Post some links to the Communities where the discussion about Jim & his properties is happening.
On ??? ... man, did you even read what I said above? I'm an old dog! Teach me of the new tricks out there. Where's the other Jim fandom activity happening online?

Very old dog, but Facebook will work I guess... But why can't we stay where we are at?
-
It is explained by Iago in link of the OP. The thread can be found under the Dresden Files topic as opposed to DF Spoilers topic.
-
Well dang. Not really a fan of Reddit or social media in general, so this is disappointing.
What if someone set up a Patreon (with no reward tiers) to fund a VBulletin board as Gryffyn suggested in the other thread? Seems like that would solve the security concerns. Or is this more because forums as a medium are outdated?

Really boils down to us not being necessary to spread Jim's work, He's famous enough the original purpose for which they made us is no longer viable. It was never for the fans. examine the words and logic put forth by them. Tis true.Twas for Jim... Now he's famous... totally opposite of Pottermore that was designed for the fans after the books were done and fandom wanted it.
-
Dude, you are so very wrong.

Dude, you are so very wrong.
Not really, examine his post.(and your making me uncomfortable saying this, not sure how I may be reacted to as this goes a bit deeper, not my intention here) Not saying it's a bad thing, He's simply Jim's very good friend. His primary motives in all of the above actions were for him specifically. What he knew he could do, getting him the publicity he needed, having a place for the fans to congregate, ect. The one thing we do here is communicate and manually spread the word, that's no longer viable, nor are we necessary to farther spread it. We are the burden on his cpu, which I totally understand that part... don't enjoy it though.
But look at that which he directly wishes to preserve, Woj. Not Mdod or other lost fellows, not reference threads forum members went to town on or our community as a whole. We serve no purpose that can't be found elsewhere. I'm sure we don't produce profit here from our links much now days or any of that. Wash the metaphorical hands and start fresh, Lucas wished to sell Star Wars after all, and that actually was profitable from the beginning to the end.
Your telling an Autistic guy whose spectrum is towards Psychobable and extreme empathy he's entirely wrong... that's just something that i'd have to disagree with. Reading ppl, even just through txt, is what I do. Course seeing something and having the correct response is an entirely different venture....
-
While you may have valid points. I respectfully feel the need to disagree. Sorry, just trying to minimize the negative in a sad situation.

LOL
There is a thing called agreeableness in Personality theory.
Agreeableness: (friendly/compassionate vs. challenging/detached). A tendency to be compassionate and cooperative rather than suspicious and antagonistic towards others. It is also a measure of one's trusting and helpful nature, and whether a person is generally well-tempered or not. High agreeableness is often seen as naive or submissive. Low agreeableness personalities are often competitive or challenging people, which can be seen as argumentativeness or untrustworthiness.[4]

Well, my son has been diagnozed on Autism Spectrum-high functioning. Probably got it from my side of the family (me).

Guess i'd be disagreeableness lol?

Yea... Just now getting my 3 yr old diagnosed, which is early to even look for it from most parents but considering my history we've been watching him closely. Can't hardly say a sentence but can count to ten and name all his colors :) he's very smart in his way. I saw him get frustrated his toy wasn't as smart as him, he kept trying to mash two primary colors simultaneously to make say the secondary color he knows it should be.
-
Yeppers that is you. And me to some extent. But mostly you. It is part of your personality, I'd wager.
Too many people telling me i'm wrong but ignoring that stink coming out of their own sh*t makes me cynical. Harry Dresden as my model for mouthing off... probably don't help one dang bit lol. eventually the internal backlash(of which the attitudes i've received here from Naysayers has very much been a part) made me give up and decided "one person walk over you, make path for future people to walk."
Better to wear bear traps as a fashion statement.
*plus.. you know how much god damned evil you see in (some)people when you look in their eyes as an empath? It's not like being a wizard, but science proves it make the mirror neurons in the back of your head light up in a quantum entanglement way. Hate people sometimes for seeing too much...

My son is 5. He counts to 50. Knows more words than a 1st grader and hides his eyes when preschool bus comes. If he don't see it than it isn't there. Has fits about all kinds of inconsistancies.

That is pretty impressive, 50.

He is smart...with attitude.

Honestly, I don't think we're the lickspittle implied by some interpretations of Iago's mission statement, but that's neither here nor there.
The question is, do we make an effort to duplicate the experience of this site elsewhere, or do we accept the other venues available to us?

Duplicate Pls, I DO so love this place. Even if every once in a while I have to argue with a lickspittle or two... possibly because I have to, on a turf I know they can't just start slinging total sh*t my way at that.. that.. helps.
To quote Brian Piccolo, "I love football jimbutcheronline, and I want you to love football jimbutcheronline too."

Jonas, try to use a filter though, I cringe at some of your posts wondering if your gonna get banned this time or next. I'm pleasantly surprised when your not, but still.

Well, I'm married to a very sensitive and emotional person and I lack alot of tact. So, I have to work on my phrasing and tone of voice constantly. It is exhausting and many times I want to bellow my first thoughts. But, I don't....mostly.

Hey warden, I saw that you asked if anyone had signed up on discord server for reddit. I have. I actually like the server lots. It just needs more people chatting. The only problem with it is that it doesn't have nice spaces for discreet topics and threads.
-
I think I joined but I am trying to get a feel for some of these new sites. I can browse this site in a drunken stupor due to my experience. New sites require a long adjustment period.
-
I'm getting more familiar with DresdenReddit, but it is a pain in the arse if your new to post things. You basically have to have every post approved by a moderator until you have sufficient standing.

Have you looked at the built in Discord widget on the Shard forum? I haven't used Discord, so I don't know if that would be useful or not.

Yeah, I made a comment about Lea being a "scary, busty redhead" that was sent to a moderator.
-
Discord is great at real time/ history of chatting. It also allows voice chatting. Not so great at posting individual topics, threads and keeping its history. That is more unique to forum.
It also seems like there would be a force against long term arguments on one topic as its hard to screen up and see all the chats days ago in a frequently used chat room.

But did you see the embedded version they have? They have a forum like ours, with a Discord chat add-on right there on the page.
-
Yeah, If you do that it would be ideal. Or we can use and embed to an existing discord for DresdenFilesReddit.
https://discordapp.com/invite/fwZ7RJy
Check this out.
You should be able to just use your browser and minimal info to join.
So a forum website with a link to discord would be ideal.

I have my reasons, very good reasons that I cannot in good conscious ignore without some of that internal backlash(though I honestly can't always tell if i'm listening to my shadow/subconscious or it's coming from my super consciousness/conscience), I don't generally break the rules even if I betimes tweak them on the nose.
You can keep to the letter of the law and still piss somebody off though, I know...

Welcome to America, home of the easily-offended and land of the overly-sensitive. Moody 5-year old makes for moody daddy.
-
It's fine with me. I just cringe. I like your ideas. Someone is more extreme than me, that is always good.

LOL your welcome. Can't remember remember which state it was in the movie... or which movie now... but someone told their teammate "your my Arkansas" cause no matter how bad he was, as long as 'Arkansas' was next to him he'd never be the worst, ergo avoiding the teams ire lol.

GAAA! it took me months to adjust to watching 2 kids all the time. Moody tantrums from baby and toddler simultaneously drove me up one wall and down the other. I'd like to think It's helped me grow more there... but woe betide any man, woman or child who doesn't let me get a little time to do what I do. To enter one of my proverbial 'sanctuaries' lol.
-
I was raised in the old-fashioned, country way. Mom wakes you up by kicking the bed and yelling "get up, moron!" If that don't work, the big cup of cold water does the trick.
-
So far, I am having the easiest time adjusting to the Discord site. Maybe, because there is a fair amount of activity there. Not giving up on the other sites, though.
-
Deadline: by the end of the year.
Haven't established one but I'd like to see things heading to a conclusion by/around the end of the year if possible.
Not a lot of time to comb through the replies here.
Suffice it to say I don't think that it's something that's gonna get solved by a single monolithic solution, I think the community will need to gel around 2-3 things that solve different overlapping parts of the need: for example, Discord or Slack for some real-time social-connecting & chatting. An established well-moderated Facebook group for that platform (because if you don't include Facebook you'll miss a big chunk of folks; personally that platform's not for me, but it is the big leader in the field) — sounds like there's one out there already. Probably a Wiki or similar to store fan resources like Word of Jim.
-
I saw that as well. Plus, he gave some good advice about requirements needed.
-
We now have 11 members on Google+. Come join us. This is a free platform. If it gets critical mass, perhaps we can just do something there.

I just created this free forum. Now I need to design it like ours. I'm not designing anything. I'll let others just take a peek at a free option.
http://jimbutcheronline.boards.net/
Nevermind. It's slow and I don't like the look so much. To much wasted space. But, anyone who likes to know how to learn about getting a forum started without spending money, it's a great place to learn.
-
I am on Google + but the set does not seem to support long-term topic posts. It has more of a blog feel.
-
Yeah, you would think google would have a REAL FORUM.
-
Well google is first a search engine. Just the biggest search engine.
-
I wouldn’t name things after this forum; it is copyrighted. Make a new, descriptive name.
Also, spend a month discussing options before putting a lot of effort into many rushed things at once, perhaps. Then, move forward confidently and together. There are a lot of good options.
For myself, I prefer a structured forum type format for formal, sequential discussion. Also, I prefer to not associate my name to a fantasy popcorn fiction site, so something where you can use pseudonyms. The last thing I would want is for some client to google my name and read my posts about Dresden Files. :)
-
Oh, I only named it that because Griffyn named the Google+ community it.
Anyways, I'm taking it down as it was just for us to check out what a free service looked like. I don't have the time, skill, nor patience to go with it.

The free sites would work just fine. They are “free” because they serve ads. If you wanted to avoid ads, you can pay an absurd monthly fee. At that point, however, it would be easier to make your own site. Still, making your own site then leads to the other problems of maintenance and having a single individual control the site (they could disappear, etc.).
Given that those of you most interested in this are not technically savvy, I would say go for the free forum hosting site and have ads do it’s free. And, don’t make absurd rules; keep it easy going with a lot of slack. Lastly, keep the forum simple. This one has way too many fora.
Lastly, thanks for all the effort and enthusiasm, raidem.
