Might be easier to add something than suppress something.
That might be true, feels like it fits. The other thing about that whole scene is that I think makes it a particularly strange occurrence is what the Corpsetaker was at that point: was she a normal Ghost, or a disembodied Soul like Harry was?

They were the right words to counter Lasciel and strictly speaking right from Uriels point of view but Mab was not wrong either.
How so?  Because all indications Ive seen (text and WOJ) is that she was very much mistaken.  Not a bad thing, she's allowed to misunderstand Human Nature, supposedly that part of why she used Sarissa as a forced-BFF giving her Human Cultural Interaction lessons.

You don't catch Uriel that easily. Since when is actually being well informed part of the human free will experience? Sometimes you get the idea that knowing everything leaves you no choice so no free will. It was her choice to drink something from a wizards lab.
She was aware that it was a Dangerous place and Chose to go Anyway; Harry was aware that he was hiding the full scope of that danger from her, but did it Anyway out of misguided protectiveness (by his own current evaluation).  Fair Play from a Free Perspective.

Red court vampires can do a lot of things when you try to soulgaze them.
Red Court Vampires can do a lot of things when you Look Them In The Eye.  They cannot be part of a Soulgaze at all.

I thought that there was text that Harry's mind is an exceptionally togh nut to crack.
He has a natural talent for hardened mental defense by White Council Standards, which unfortunately in the case of Mental Magic is kinda like saying you are the best swimmer in the kiddy pool.

That is what Uriel's 7 words in Ghost Story seems to make somewhat hollow. Sure, only Harry can change who he is but Mab knows from experience that if you push hard enough it will happen.
I dont see your meaning with that comparison, Hollow how?  The Shadow (Lasciel) spoke seven words at the right Time and Place to convince Harry that it was inevitable that he would eventually fall, so Uriel spoke seven words at the right Time and Place to convince him of the opposite (and since Harry had already died he was given some leeway to arrange said moment).

Fwiw, the TWG side doesnt seem to view being "Pushed" alone as a violation of Free Will (this is the Thrall distinction, methinks), given that a half-vamp that succumbs to their vampiric Blood-lust was still Choosing of their own Free Will

There is no real control about what you see or not, for both parties. Though some things are possible as Margaret showed in blood rites.
That's a good point, Maggie was able to tie a message spell into it.  And perhaps more relevant as a counter-argument to mine, Molly was able to initiate mental combat via a Soulgaze, which was in no small part all about Hiding from the other.

Exactly, or if you are an old enough, powerful enough, well trained enough, you can hide a lot of stuff.  Actually when you think about it, wardens may have this skill because they do soul gaze as evidence a lot.  I can see where they might not want to completely open themselves up to a warlock or some other evil person..  Knowledge is power and then if that person got off or escaped would potentially hold a lot over them..
Yes to the part where it does not give you everything (or really anything factually specific like vocation or genealogy), but I really dont think there is any way to actively Hide things during it, that's basically the whole Big Deal with the Sight and Soulgazes.  A big clue to that for me is that an Angel's only choice was to Shut Down ghost Harry's Sight to protect him, he couldnt simply obfuscate his weapon.

I will point out (mostly muddling the waters I think) that per WOJ the intent behind the spell does affect things, specifically along the line between Targeted magic and (in that WOJ example) Wards which were strong enough to kill FBI agents but arent illegal.  Large-scale manufacturing of a recreational drug would not carry the sort of directed animosity that is apparently important when talking about mental invasion.

Magic that affects the mind is not itself against the Law (either at the Council Law level or the Universal one).  That's a big part of why it took two different Laws to cover it.  One is against mental Breaking & Entering, and the other is Thralling a person which is a fairly specific (if comprehensive) magical act; both directly Subvert Free Will. There are tons of mental magics that do not qualify, from the various Communication Spells we've seen, general deterrence wards and whatever else the Council uses when they meet (or execute) in Chicago, that Memory defense Spell of Elaine's, that Truth Spell of Luccios (I think), that Dont Notice Me potion from FM, the any phantasm-based illusion, etc etc.

In the case of the Potion, it upped the crap out of her sex drive but from the outside it's hard to say it if was a chemical vs a psychological effect.  Neither would qualify as full Thralling or as Mental B&E like implanting a Nightmare would be.  Hell, I could see the argument that Molly wouldnt have been breaking the laws if she'd just evoked an ambient fear response each time she witnessed her friend Using, instead of actually Implanting a persistent Nightmare.

The issue with the firearms was a mistake by Jim I think but he basically let it fade away, and doesn't really seem to be part of the book lore anymore.  He even had Carlos with a modern sidearm.  So one could walk away feeling that it was in fact Harry's misunderstanding of firearms that lead him to believe it was magical interference causing semiautomatic weapons to jam when in reality it was happening naturally (guns do jam sometimes after all).
Not a mistake, just something that a lot of people misunderstand.  Here's his explanation of how some of that actually works, and it's a lot less like a walking EMP than most people imagine:

The ‘Harry screws up guns’ thing hasn’t been seen for several novels now, and I sincerely hope it’s something JB has decided to let go to dust.  First away, if Harry’s disruption thing is so bad that it can mess up simple chemistry and even simpler mechanical operations, then howinblazes does his car ever work?  Orders of magnitude more complex, mechanically, chemically, and electrically speaking…

On the other hand, using a GUN in earnest tends to be a tad more emotionally (and therefore magically) engaging than your average drive in a car.  Proximity has a lot to do with it, too.  Harry’s actually TOUCHING the gun, generally in his right hand (the hand that projects magical energy) to boot.  In fact, the gun is small enough that it’s actually going to be encompassed by his bioelectric field (a very mild, but totally individual field of electromagnetic energy that the human body produces).

The car is a much larger (relative) object that is (relatively) farther away, even when Harry is driving under stress–and even so, the Beetle (and other cars) have broken down on-stage more often than guns have actually jammed on-stage.

And there are other factors involved of which Harry is not entirely aware.  Alas, that the viewpoint character is non-omniscient. :)

The rules aren’t changing.  The proper circumstances just haven’t all aligned the way they have in the other instances of guns glitching.

    Jim

Luccio had already been brain raped by Peabody and under the influence, which influenced her involvement with Harry.   She may not have even been aware at the time that Molly entered her brain that she had because of what already had been done to her, her involvement with Harry may also have been a factor.   Or because the damage done to her by Peabody was severe, she may not remember it..  There is also the desire for a cover up on the whole matter, so Molly may have dodged a bullet in this case..  However in no way is going into another's mind without permission a gray area, it is breaking the Laws of Magic pure and simple...
Agreed on that, with the qualifier that the Act itself can be arguably Dark Grey rather than black. For example, it may have been the case when they were having to inspect and De-Program the entire council membership post-Peabody, we're talking about /mandatory/ psychic examination and 'treatment' by one of the top two most creepy Senior Council Members; or that time Molly "Examined" Harry to discover Mab's meddling and he sorta kinda maybe subconsciously gave her permission, but both Michael and Luccio did not object.

I don't know why this is still stickied. Nobody here needs an announcement from 2006 that Evil Hat is planning to create a Dresden Files RPG.

So, unstickying.
Anything in here worth preserving for posterity?  The only reason I could think to leave such a thread stickied was that it wouldnt get eaten by the thread-timer.

It was flooring him just fine in Cold Days, long before he got all his more recent mantle-driven damage accumulation. Floored fix too.  It was more than just turning the mantle off, it cause interaction/interference with the Winter energy.  In skin game I got the sense he was just better at managing the Mantle now so he was able to deal with it better than before.
