DF Spoilers / Re: Jim interview

Since Cerberus is involved im assuming the Namean Lion escaped from the afterlife ie the Underworld.

Wasn't the Nemean Lion killed by Hercules as one of his twelve labors?  At least that is according to Google, or is that another myth that isn't quite true as Hades explained to Harry back in Skin Game.

It also reminds of a fantasy author, I think it was Rothfuss, listing Moses as one of the archetypal wizards. Depending on the translation, Moses had a staff and Aaron had a rod. Both were involved in miracles. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron%27s_rod. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staff_of_Moses. Staves and rods were used as symbols of power and authority, probably because of the Bible, in European history. All these things make it fitting that they would be used as instruments of power in a fantasy series.

I liked the fact that Elaine made fun of Harry in White Knight for going with the penis centric foci when she was putting on her gear.

Langtry struck at the right time by calling the death sentence vote while LtW and McCoy were in surgery, and Rashid was occupied at the outer gates. Martha was apparently put off enough by him killing turtlenecks and frightened by the stunt with the Little Folk to flip her support, although getting the death sentence suspended might have been a concession she extracted.

I think Langtry is still actively working against Harry.  By hanging a suspended death sentence on him to be carried out by Eb, he now has a handle on Ebenezer.  He can just order Harry's death, something he knows damn well Eb won't want to do.  All Langtry has to do is threaten to have the sentence carried out to keep Eb in line.  He now has a means to control Eb, which will come to a head at some point im sure.

IIRC, Jim stated that Harry has about 2mil of diamonds and I doubt he would want to ask Mab or Molly for more a loan.  Those interest rates have to bite big time.

I was screaming at Harry to call for Cat Sidhe during the Malk scenes.  Would have loved to have that snark machine come back.

Keep in mind that when Marcone left, he took everything except the walls.  furniture all that so the armory is empty and no beds couches etc.  Harry has to start from scratch.

Let's say we're Harry & Co.  What does the BFS do, and who joins and does what?

Headquarters
Castle Dresden

Building Uses
  • Guest rooms.
  • Babysitting service.
  • Training facility.
  • Armory.

Group Services
  • Home Warding
[/list]

Mab knows, so does Lara and Odin.  Harry called Marcone "Sir Baron" at that meeting at the end.  Mab lights up saying that explains a lot.  Leverage to get the castle.

If not during the kidnapping, then it was likely sometime between the end of Cold Days and Peace Talks.  It was likely in the events prior to Even Hand, where she's just escaped from Corb's people with the prisoners and the girl.  Maybe it didn't go the way she remembered, but Beside manipulated her memories.

That would make the story more relevant to the overall plot, as it illuminated the specific event where she was compromised.

Nemesis itself said sometime after getting close to Lara.  if that can be believed, remember her actions during White Night.  Harry was surprised to see Justine actually lucid and ambulatory while waiting to be introduced in the Nut Cave (the Deeps)  She glossed over it quickly, but I think it was Nemesis.

  • Castle Wyvern Dresden.

I wonder if the castle has any Gargoyles or Grotesques featuring on its battlements.....

Man has the dude grown.  Last time we had a report of his size was Cold Days at 18 inches.  Now the guy shows up in Battle Ground at 30?  And I love the fact that He FINALLY got the armor and weapon upgrades that I had been hoping for.  Same for his Colonels.  Was a treat seeing the Guard and all the Little Folk being put to awesome use and flabberghasting everyone who witnessed it.

  • Mab is at the Outer Gates. Lea is "standing in" for Mab at the Peace Talks, in disguise. (I didn't notice a single mention of Chicago having unseasonably cold weather -- which we've always gotten before, when Mab's in town.)

Ooo, I like this.  Make them overconfident, thinking they put a beat down on Mab, when it's just Lea.  A very Mab-ish plan.

". Odin probably originated in the myths of early Germanic peoples, who called him Wodan"
"Odin appears in many stories as a womaniser, even boasting of his affairs, reminiscent of (and perhaps inspired by?) Zeus from Greek mythology."
"recorded history of Northern Europe, from the Roman occupation of regions of Germania (from c.  2 BCE) through the tribal expansions of the Migration Period (4th to 6th centuries CE) and the Viking Age (8th to 11th centuries CE). In the modern period the rural folklore of Germanic Europe continued to acknowledge Odin."
"narratives regarding Odin are mainly found in Old Norse works recorded in Iceland, primarily around the 13th century. These texts make up the bulk of modern understanding of Norse mythology."
"the Ęsir as a group, which includes both Thor and Odin, were late introductions into Northern Europe and that the indigenous religion of the region had been Vanic"
My scholars disagree with your scholars 🤷‍♂️

yes, 2 BCE, 542 years before merlin supposedly was active.  And that's just when the Romans encountered Odin.  he was around earlier than that.

edit: clarity

wodan, the earliest form of Odin, didn't come around until iirc 8th century. Soooo 🤷‍♂️ different name origin, different identity, probably the old Odin, which supports him being replaced then eh.

"Odin appears as a prominent god throughout the recorded history of Northern Europe, from the Roman occupation of regions of Germania (from c.  2 BCE) through the tribal expansions of the Migration Period (4th to 6th centuries CE) and the Viking Age (8th to 11th centuries CE)."

That's just from when the Romans decided to go poke that particular bear.  there is more evidence that he was worshiped for hundreds, possibly a 1000 years before that.  It's hard to pin down because those tribes back then mostly used Oral Tradition for a lot of things.

lmfao, no, no he doesn't. He predates the stories your familiar with. Actually look into his history. An sure, that's in the books. But it isn't necessarily accurate.

There is evidence that Odin worship may have come about in the Bronze Age (3000-1200 BCE) and Merlin was said to live in the middle to late 6th century CE.  Bit of a gap.

@bacail... see Odin holding the all-father mantle, becoming capable of using his power, losing and eye, ect.
Or if you don't prescribe to that vein, like you pointed out the second half of mythologically Odin, Santa and Merlin are tied by the same thread, so Odin wasn't even Odin to begin with technically, he was Merlin. If you argued it the other way around, I might agree, but Santa is specifically just mantle, those are made to be worn. There's even Woj he has others work for him acting in his role, though it doesn't specify with his mantle, the role itself is shared all the same. Klaus the toymaker is one of his lackey's. You can hold more than one mantle, it's what the mother's do, and part of how Jim works with the Hindu gods, who all hold multiple Mantle's.

Except Odin predates Merlin by over 1000 years, and according to Eb, who has Merlin's journals, Odin was a teacher to Merlin.
