Calendar Event Discussion / Re: Jim at Dragon*Con 2010
« on: September 07, 2010, 11:35:47 PM »
Jim B. is my hero for 2 reasons from this D*Con:

1. Being professional for the Boundaries Panel - his response to "what is the difference between gender & sexuality" was awesome-sauce and he kept his cool when at least one of the other authors got a bit hostile (probably because his answer somewhat broke her brain) ... that was one of the top 3 most excrutiating panels I've ever had to sit through at any D*Con ever (I've missed one D*Con since 1988). The "only girls are engineers" and line about Princess Leia were also awesome...

2. He managed to not say "don't do it" when asked about NERO advise and gave a great response.

Sadly, my general inebriation and prior commitments only let me catch 3 of his panels.
Do wish I'd gotten the chance to grab a boffer and get in line with a paint pen for the autograph line ... so wanted a "thank you for not beating me with this for how Changes ended -Jim B" signed boffer *sigh*

Hoping he'll be back next year and that the LARP director can talk him into doing a LARP panel (because if the Sex Binaries and the Art panel weren't out there, LARPing can't be much worse - may even cause the LARP panels to get in the actual programming :-/ )

Vindication awoke hungover, disgruntled and proceeded to emasculate another abbreviated news clip.  Exasperated with tiresome drivel constantly quoting Garfield he searched in vain for immaculate reporting.  Valiantly ignoring vivacious vixens with the biggest, loudest dance-routines, he decided not to apply logic, rather to invoke vainglorious abortions of dogmatic speeches that did exterminate any chance and distinguished Camembert from those devious dairy turncoats.  What the hell!  Flinging a piece of Havarti and starting a stirring of goulash, he felt intensely satisfied that he wasn't medicated; however, his defenestration and subsequent resurrection memory-loss had constructed a tuba symphony.  This unwittingly surprised him. So much unexpected noise! Drastic measures

I will no longer take Mouse on walks near Larry Fowler's studio and try to look confused when the fire department shows up interrupting his show.

I will not use Little Chicago to decimate every parking meter in Big Chicago.
* even if I've just gotten a parking ticket
* well, maybe on April Fools' Day

I will not use powers to affect sporting events.
* Even for the Cubs

I will not ask Bob to help me with a spell to put Ammorachius in a rock until the proper wielder comes along.
* Nor will I ask Arthur Langtree if any of his predecessors left any notes about it either

I will not make any "Sith" references about myself and Molly ...
* Especially around Morgan
* Mostly because he probably wouldn't get my humor
* Especially because Molly my start with the Nimue comments again ...

I will not cackle madly and say "its time to make the donuts" in a sleepy voice whenever I see a Summer Court Fey from now on...
* Especially if Thomas is with me

I will not make any more comments about Wizards, secrets and heroin when meeting with members of the white council
* Especially after Ramirez was felony-stopped when someone overheard me the last time I said it

DFRPG / Re: The difference between diceless and LARP
« on: February 03, 2008, 12:04:08 AM »
That's ...hmmm...kind of....retarded.

QFT
Always hated the fact that conflict resolution in what was supposed to be a horror genre game is most often mastered before 2nd grade.

As a point of interest, some LARPs DO use some dice rolling to determine randomness, but its rarely involved in anything "fast-paced".

Another point is there are two main "styles" of LARP:

1. "Boffer LARPs" - I hit you with a padded weapon (generally in the woods) and we're dressed and living as our characters for the duration of the game.  Almost everyone is "in play" though everywhere may not be.

2. "Salon-Style LARPs" - I tell you what I'm doing in a manner similar to what tabletop RPGers would see as standard role-playing.  There are GMs who spend time OOP moderating or doing GMish things, but most interaction is between PCs.  Conflict resolution is generally done via some sort of randomizing element (R/S/P, dice, coin-toss, etc) or occassionally on a point-system basis.

"Salon-style" LARPs have been, in my experience, less time consuming, require a less "active" player base, less about costuming and more PvP heavy.  Where as "Boffer" LARPs tend to be involve a longer time commitment (usually a full day at least, more often a whole weekend), generally involve more makeup/costuming/ props, more PVE centric and require a more active player base.

I've been curious if Jim wrote plot for whichever LARP he was (is?) involved in, and if so, his views on how it affected his writing.
