I'd go a little different route.

Alchemist [-1]
You may use aspects created by Lore to improve a Resources skill roll.  Gain +2 to create advantage rolls for this purpose once per session.

When running a D&D like FATE game for my little brother and his friends, each non-human character had:
1 aspect related to species
2 refresh worth of powers related to species

Humans got two extra refresh and would typically take an aspect related to their home town or kingdom.

You're completely right Mij. We have I believe a WOJ that says black magic does corrupt your soul.
Yes we do. Look at Hannah Asher. She went from the same point Harry was at, killing to protect ones life, to killing more wardens to "protect her life", then to taking up a coin in vengeance against someone . That's a descent into darkness if I've ever seen one.
The first time you ever kill a deer when you're hunting, you freak the fuck out, but every subsequent deer kill makes you less sad, and is therefor easier to do. That's how black magic works. It just makes it a more viable option in your brain. Think about Harry relying on Lash.

Yes to both to some point. Think about how often Harry has had to fight down the urge to use his magic that shape the world to his will. That's the stain of black magic saying "do it". Think about Molly, even though she already knew it was bad, something in her head was whispering "just go into morgans mind and make him stop talking about Harry" All of those are examples of the corruption of Black Magic.

Woah, major spoiler!

So...  The author of the series, the architect of the setting, says something outright, and you 'disagree'?  Got it.

To be fair, when it comes to literary criticism I largely agree with the "Death of the Author" philosophy.  We're not really engaging in literary criticism, but trying to suss out how the mechanics of a fictional world work and work from a common baseline.  For that purpose, the views of the game designers and author carry quite a bit of weight (they don't have to be adhered to, but that would be a house rule or setting change based on your table).

Potestas seems to read the novels rather differently than I do.  He also wants a very different type of game than I do.

Harry is, basically.  Mab and Demonreach.  It works out well for him.

self defense is allowed No person wizard or not, has to sit passively by and be killed by anyone or thing. You may have to explain your actions but your not a lawbreaker. so i doubt anyone would consider it murder especially since WCouncil knows all about the abilities of the BC and what they do to humans. I really don't think the laws are as tight as alot of people want to play them.

This is completely opposite what both the rule books and the novels present as cannon.

I got an acceptance letter.  This should be neat.  The disclosure agreement allows me to share playtest reports, but not text.  I'll post after the first game.

DFRPG / Re: Speedster?
« on: August 07, 2014, 04:24:28 PM »
Yeah I think I will go that direction. Depending on the power level of the game(if I can ever find one to join) I think Supernatural speed, inhuman recovery, and then world walker, if the character is working for Hermes then those seem necessary. What would be a good catch for a demi-god though?

Celestial bronze?  Hydra blood?

Really though, the perfect catch for a scion of Hermes is...mercury!

I counted 6 (including Skin Game), but that's still less than half.  Hell, Harry generates enough compels to not even need to keep that FP in reserve.

We had a neophyte apprentice in our group for a short while.  They used Tolkien Elvish, as the character was a total fantasy nerd who was continually surprised when monsters didn't mesh with their romantancised expextations.

We've also used Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Greek, Old English, and Gaelic.  Or, rather, heavily bastardizations of them.

I'm sure Scant can find it better than me, but I've written skill replacement stunts that basically let you use Resources or Contacts instead of Lore for enchanted items.

If you're willing to go minor talent, Ritual Crafting lets you basically craft any effect into an item (while other types of Ritual let you make items specific to your speciality or theme).

I'd be very interested in a sponsored magic type thing with debt to a minor entity
(click to show/hide)
allowing access to magic items and such.

And you have things like the Khan academy. And Museums and lots of univerisites put up lots of material for free.

What people forget is research is not just for PhD's, they are also for things a the thesis for a Masters's degree. When I studied here in Sweden, we were told that a Master's Thesis (equivalent to 10 weeks work) should give new information on a national level.

/Ulfgeir

You're not going to find detailed information on museum collections from most of their websites.  You'll get highlights and general information.  Hell, half the time you can't get a complete list on their websites.

The internet, without paywalls, certainly cannot support a masters' thesis that is giving national level new information.  With paywalls, it's a pretty strong maybe.  Hence, internet 2.  Journal databases like JSTOR can make it a 3 (supporting undergraduate and masters' courses).

I think for most people, the internet is a level 2.
University students, those with access to databases like JSTOR have level 3.
Most Universities themselves have level 4 for most subjects.
Level 5 would be reserved for things like a university's area of focus or museum collections.  National libraries, the Library of Congress, the Vatican, they're level 5 for every subject.
